- Les Paul and Chet Atkins promoting their album "Guitar Monsters" on the Today show with Gene Shalit. Part two of two.
1. Introduction
2. It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)
3. Limehouse Blues
4. Chet shows off his folding guitar
Chet Atkins - Gretsch guitar
Les Paul - Gibson Les Paul guitar
Bob Sutton - drums
Henry Stilecki (?) - bass
Thanks to bpthree for the recording, which he preserved so well for all these years.
Few men are brave enough to have grabbed Chet’s right hand while playing.
The Gibson and Gretsch sound so beautiful together, especially in the hands to two masters.
Jody Sheridan talkin’bout acdc? ;D
Paul and Atkins were both instrumental (so to speak) in the development of electric guitars. They're each playing guitars they helped design to specs which suited their playing styles. You'll never hear a Gibson Les Paul or a Gretsch Chet Atkins Country Gentleman played more deftly than in this clip. Ever. Isn't it a delight to hear?
i would do heinous, unspeakable things to have les paul's les paul
That mustache is fucking wild lol
Les makes it look so easy, the notes just fly off his fingers, and Chet too, never breaks a sweat. Both of these guys, just too damn good.
Two of the finest pickers ever, sadly both gone to a better place, hopefully.x
legends forever...…….
Sadly gone? That’s life.
@@bonhamhouse1169 You are a sick person. Yes, it's sad. Parting is sorrowful.
I realize it is kind of randomly asking but do anybody know of a good place to stream new tv shows online?
Les is a mad scientist with mad playing skills. He's crazy but in a fun way.
Back in the days when television showcased talent and class.
Unlike today, back then you had to have real talent to get on TV. Unless maybe you were on the Gong Show. 😁
People don’t remember how good a player Les was and with Chet it goes without saying. Les Paul’s stuff on his first sound on sound record (made in his garage) with a tape deck with an additional recording head is still incredible now. And it was really incredible then in the early 50’s. He didn’t jus innovate, he could really play!
I don't think most people even know Les Paul was a guitar player. They prob just assume it's the name for the guitar and nothing else
I think these guys can both take #1 guitar player. Les was fast, accurate, and great with bends. Chet’s finger style and his insanely complex chords and is amazing with harmonizing with himself
is that a little Les Paul shredding in 1978?
Nah this is just hardcore shredding through and through. Some of these techniques take years to perfect. Les Paul is using techniques that are more difficult than most metal songs, Chet is strumming some pretty beefy chords at times too. Theres nothing to call them except masters of the craft.
I hear Jeff beck in Les,,,,but Chet is rock solid,,,,,lets Les noodle,,,,,,Man I love these guys,,,
Remember, kids, Buddy Rich said Chet Atkins wasn't a real musician because he was a country player.
Buddy, love ya babe, there's no doubt that your face is carved on drumming's Mount Rushmore, but stay in your fucking lane.
It's pronounced Mo- BEEL Alabama. Screw buddy rich. His despicable persona COMPLETLY negates any talent. Somebody should've kicked his ass up to his shoulder blades years before his demise.
Imagine hearing Chet Atkins play a guitar and then try to say with a straight face that he isn’t a “real musician.” Lol.
What a totally ignoramus thing for Buddy to have said - he wasn't kidding, was he? Good grief!! Chet Atkins is AWESOME.
Joe Day fuck Buddy Rich. He was a rude, crude drunk and abusive to musicians and fans.
The coolest, most relaxed of masters. Funny thing, both names, Chester and Lester are derived from the Old English word Caestre, later form Caester, which means fort or castle. I guess they are the two most beautiful castles in the world of guitar.
Les Paul was clear he had an instrument of the future on his hands... and he knew ‘cause he invented the damn thing! Thus his playing, wild and eclectic, like his beloved electricity.
The history of the actual guitar he's playing is quite interesting. He made the Les Paul with Gibson obviously, but Gibson just kinda kept it the same give or take but Les Paul himself never stopped changing it and improving it (in his eyes). Like he loathed distortion and overdrive and dedicated himself to eliminating it. And so this guitar he's playing has a different impedence to basically all other electric guitars and needs a special amp to be able to play it, the pickups are essentially only on this guitar model and no other, it has a whole bunch of switches, like 20 switches when guitars normally only have 1, or 2 at the most. Gibson released replicas of this specific kind of Les Paul and called it the recording model, but they're very rare and highly sought after, and very expensive. But they have a unique sound to them that basically no other kind of electric guitar ever made has. They're astounding instruments. Wish I could own one one day but it's the cost of a vintage porsche pretty much.
The Gibson Les Paul Guitar was created by Ted McCarty and the Gibson design team with 'input' from Les Paul the man. He didn't invent it, he urged it along.
Wow, Les Paul plays like silk. He OWNS the guitar -- in more ways than one.
Les Paul appeared to be completely fearless. What he plays here in this clip is pretty out there. Chet is of course so chill that even the artic ice seems warm compared.
This must’ve sounded Alien to people back in the day
It sounds Alien now.
Out of this world.
dude u r so L7
What do you mean with Alien back in the day? Its not like they already heard Hendrix, Clapton, PAge, Beck and all the others...
Chet had been playing like this since the 50s
@@joriszsz95 The thing is, Les Paul already sounded like this in the late 40s, waaay before any Hendrix, Clapton or Page was seen. Chet Atkins since the early 50s
Let me say this: Gretch and Gibson are equals IF the right players are in the equation. EOM
These two guys are amazing. I'm a rock guy but these two make some incredible music.
If yoy are a Rock guy, you should know, add some distortion to these music crancked up and there you have it!
I thought I was a guitar player. I'm not worthy to even hold one.
Les liked to have fun while playing. Chet is amazingly perfection.
my two heros. And if they Django there it would be heavenly.
BEAUTY in Sound!!!! Thanks for posting! Shut up, Gene....When YOU can play the guitar as well as Les and Chet, THEN you can criticize!!!!
TheTreasureHouse what criticism?
Well there is les paul playing a different song as everyone else again.
Love how the drummer gets out of the way and plays the cymbals so nice.
Also that folding guitar.
CHET ATKINS had a son. who's called STEVE HOWE
Little baby with the bushy moustache NEEDS ALL THE ATTENTION !!!!! Pacify him - but don't let the other kid still HIS spotlight!......ugh.
Les is so underrated as a guitarist. God damn beast
@@orlandopockets6372 agreed however in addition to what you said, I' tell'em politely to GTFOH!
@@orlandopockets6372 this is les Paul!
chet was very patient with les in this.and les made only good sounds. we can see what good men both of them where. great moment
Lovin' this! Chet always had such a soothing, smooth sound to his music; an elegance. Two legends: no one else in their class, ever.
Roy Clark was just about as good as these amazing players. I’d like to have seen that.
I could listen to these guys all day while in a hammock and sipping iced tea
clapton is god? don´t think so ;-)
+JC S I am a pantheist when it comes to guitar players.
These guys would make Clapton's head spin. But Clapton was a killer songwriter (Tears in Heaven, Layla, Old Love), and that was something Chet and all those guys really admire. Takes all kinds!
Jacob Johnson m
I thought David Gilmour was better but he can only play with Pink Floyd. Whereas, Clapton can play with different bands and musicians. I think that was due to the instability of the bands he was with like Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek & The Dominoes, and projects. Gilmour just with Pink Floyd though he played with Paul McCartney. But I like Gilmour.
+Cameron Goncalo I like Chet overall. He knows how to use modern instruments while maintains his style.
God Bless Les & Chet, my all time 2 favorites..! Man they could play..!
Les paul un desastre, nunca supo tocar, no entiendo como Chet estuvo tocando con el, de lastima, seguro
Love these two guys together. They go back a long way. Chet's brother used to play with Les. Two totally different styles of playing but they blend them together so well.
Very cool. Les had such an odd style, neither jazz or blues or rock. It's got a lot of Big Band in it but not playing it like a Big Band guitarist would, as a rhythm instrument. He's got his own thing going for sure, but I wonder how many people really enjoy hearing him play versus appreciate him in a kind of academic way.
Roy Clark would have played well with these guys, too.
superb ....Some great technique from les on display here.
Does anyone else think that Gene Shalit looks like a man from 2018 who has time travelled back to 1978 but only had the starsky and hutch film as reference for how people dressed?
Peter Martin No.
Haha!!!
Nice Gibson G-3 Bass in seat # 3
I started playing at 40, Chet played at least 40 years, so when I'm 80....CRAP! Oh well, won't have enough money to retire anyway.
But dang I didn't know les was that creative and good
Luc Fielder less is that good because he is and was the father of the electric guitar there will be no other no ax man to be as great as he ever was without Les Paul there would be no electric guitars or axes or even multitrack recording
I feel you, I even owned a tv yellow les Paul custom .... had no idea ....
Les paul No sabia nada, Chet Atkins capaz que le enseñaba, pero no aprendió jamas, un desastre
You’re a fuckin idiot and know nothing about guitar playing or les contributions
Les had the fastest fingers in the business.
A lot of winging it in this one! What a great pair and they compliment wach other so well.
two of the worlds greatest, may b the greatest....👏🙏👍👌
mike hunt If black guitar players didn't exist.
@@modernsavage2584 Lmao why is there always some afro-centrist hanging around in these old videos? Les Paul revolutionized all guitar playing. Both by his inventions and techniques. You can read up on him and his impact on the instrument, it would sound very different without him. Chet Atkins too was a driving factor behind more advanced country picking. Mark Knopfler mentioned Atkins as his idol. Both of them pre-dates any Hendrix or Berry
a fold up geetar? where can i get one? i wanna p.u a gibson les paul late 50's reissue and a gibson chet atkins model.ive played them both and they sound AWESOME ! Two bad ass musicians for sure ! amazing !!!! thanks for the vid !!!

just love listening to Les play
Two of the greatest EVER and my personal all time favorites! FABULOUS!!!!
Очень люблю гитару, как играют, дух захватывает, это так здорово, талантливо, а сколько выдумки, снимаю шляпу!
Henry Strzelecki on bass.
The whole band is great. Got to be in the pocket.
Just how great were these two gentlemen. I love them so much Chet & Les. I will remember you guys always.....
Limehouse Blues played by two Django Reinhardt fans
I watched this live that morning, fantastic stuff. Promptly went and bought the album. Still have to this day.
I have a Gretsch guitar like Chets and there is something wrong with mine....can’t seem to make it play like that ! 🤷♂️
Les Paul was, and will be one of the greatest guitar players to ever exist.
Chet Atkins is the exact same way....No one better and few as good !
Gibson Gang 🔥
I remember seeing this on television in the 70’s, great memories.....
Les Paul's Les Paul doesn't look like any Les Paul that I've ever seen on the rack.
+Curtis West and u wont son
It's the Les Paul Recording model.
It bombed. Ironically nobody wants a Les Paul made for Les Paul sadly.
ANY guitar Les Paul happens to be playing is a 'Les Paul' guitar LOL
Chet with the swing... so good. Miss him.
Les and Chet make it look so Easy! May They RIP. Thank You for All the Great music. And Les Thank You for your guitars!!!
This is an example of two great guitar players that didn’t fit well together for this performance. Les played dazzling licks in the first piece that didn’t work with Chet’s well constructed arrangement (IMO).
That foldable guitar is ridiculous. I can't imagine how it folds like that, there must be some latch that lets the bridge slide towards the neck because otherwise the tension would be too strong pulling the neck the other way.
Not only was Les Paul a revolutionary luthier(guitar make) and technical wizard, but damn could he play.
Holy crap. Les Paul changed the world. And Chet? Fugetaboudit!
No that Chet wasn't by any means but I've recently seen a lot of Les's last work and you kinda slow down a tad when your 93 it's amazing he could even still hold a guitar but in the day "he and Chet " we're "the shit, dayum
This is REAL guitar playing...! The best American players of all time... Legends... They set the table for everybody else...!
Anybody know what kind of amplifiers these two masters used?
Thanks so much for this! Real genius stuff!
Les Lives on through his great work! So glad that I got to see him twice at his Fat Tuesday gigs. Total talent.
Genius stuff, and how's that serious axe Les Paul is playing? with a pedal stuck to it? and what the hell do all those switches do...jaysus.......
That black box is the "Les Paulverizer", and it's used to record up to 8 tracks and play them back so he can play over them. He was the first to ever use multi-track recording technology, which is the industry standard now.
Patchis He invented multitrack recording. It literally didn't exist before Les Paul had the idea.
That's not really true, though. He just popularized it with his invention. "Stereo" sound was invented in 1881, which is essentially multitracking with 2 tracks. 62 years before Les Paul's invention.
The Pallophotophone was invented in 1922, and was used to record multiple tracks on film 31 years before Les Paul's invention.
I'll give credit where credit is due. Les Paul revolutionized the industry with his incredible invention, but let's not pretend that he was the first to think of it.
Its a Les Paul recording..fabulous guitars ..the in and out of phase switch is astounding
2 of the best to ever pick up a guitar.
If you've disliked this. You don't understand.
Good job camera man on Chets fingerpicking skills.
Both playing guitars named after themselves and deservedly so.. Two of the masters
Crazy good. John 5 is only guy i see that would be able to play this.
John 5 loves these two and really does pull off some of this stuff, but there aren't many
rhythm section keeping it tight, sounds like a drum machine and pre recorded bass.
Young guitar players have to understand those were the original shredders
Les Paul’s guitars look nothing like Les Paul guitars
Take note "kiddies" this is how it's done!! 2 sensational 6 string masters, what an amazing guitar player Les Paul was dayum👍🏼
Les Paul, Chat Atkins and one and only Juan Servantes
@pillroller88 Fingerpick, only joking there styles blend perfectly two greats.
Two great guys,,, who worked their tail off for their Craft.
olds granpas shredders amazingz guitaristz
i cant stop smiling while watching this
Stilecki is playing a Gibson Grabber bass.
To much screwing around ! :)
Hammer on at 1:45, nice Must be where Eddie learned it, Chet does it too...
IT DON'T MEAN A TING IF IT A IN'T GOT THAT SVING.!@!..>.CHESTER & LESTER
Les and Chet together = * Super-Awesome *
Both legends that every guitar player should know not only by one mention or the name of a guitar. Lester was a brilliant composer, a great instrumentist and a genius of technology. Chester was a guitar player from another galaxy, the virtuous.
Check out the Chester and Lester album.
What about Roy Clark, the Master Shredder.
... Did he just fold up his guitar? Or is my mind blown?
Lost technology 😆
why is that gooball shalit being so rude to les in the beginning?
The less les paul of all les paul's is les paul's les paul
Just two legends at work, those were the days, but both will never be forgotten.
A lot of winging it in this one! What a great pair and they compliment each other so well.
PAY ATTENTION MR PAUL...!!.☆RCA
✌....ROCK'N..R
Is that Vince Gill in the white coat 2:04 ...
