      Paul and Atkins were both instrumental (so to speak) in the development of electric guitars. They're each playing guitars they helped design to specs which suited their playing styles. You'll never hear a Gibson Les Paul or a Gretsch Chet Atkins Country Gentleman played more deftly than in this clip. Ever. Isn't it a delight to hear?

    People don’t remember how good a player Les was and with Chet it goes without saying. Les Paul’s stuff on his first sound on sound record (made in his garage) with a tape deck with an additional recording head is still incredible now. And it was really incredible then in the early 50’s. He didn’t jus innovate, he could really play!

    • @louisb.6149
      @louisb.6149 5 років тому +7

      Nah this is just hardcore shredding through and through. Some of these techniques take years to perfect. Les Paul is using techniques that are more difficult than most metal songs, Chet is strumming some pretty beefy chords at times too. Theres nothing to call them except masters of the craft.

    The coolest, most relaxed of masters. Funny thing, both names, Chester and Lester are derived from the Old English word Caestre, later form Caester, which means fort or castle. I guess they are the two most beautiful castles in the world of guitar.

  • @fugamante

    Les Paul was clear he had an instrument of the future on his hands... and he knew ‘cause he invented the damn thing! Thus his playing, wild and eclectic, like his beloved electricity.

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 5 років тому +7

      The history of the actual guitar he's playing is quite interesting. He made the Les Paul with Gibson obviously, but Gibson just kinda kept it the same give or take but Les Paul himself never stopped changing it and improving it (in his eyes). Like he loathed distortion and overdrive and dedicated himself to eliminating it. And so this guitar he's playing has a different impedence to basically all other electric guitars and needs a special amp to be able to play it, the pickups are essentially only on this guitar model and no other, it has a whole bunch of switches, like 20 switches when guitars normally only have 1, or 2 at the most. Gibson released replicas of this specific kind of Les Paul and called it the recording model, but they're very rare and highly sought after, and very expensive. But they have a unique sound to them that basically no other kind of electric guitar ever made has. They're astounding instruments. Wish I could own one one day but it's the cost of a vintage porsche pretty much.

      I thought David Gilmour was better but he can only play with Pink Floyd. Whereas, Clapton can play with different bands and musicians. I think that was due to the instability of the bands he was with like Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek & The Dominoes, and projects. Gilmour just with Pink Floyd though he played with Paul McCartney. But I like Gilmour.

      That's not really true, though. He just popularized it with his invention. "Stereo" sound was invented in 1881, which is essentially multitracking with 2 tracks. 62 years before Les Paul's invention.
      The Pallophotophone was invented in 1922, and was used to record multiple tracks on film 31 years before Les Paul's invention.
      I'll give credit where credit is due. Les Paul revolutionized the industry with his incredible invention, but let's not pretend that he was the first to think of it.

    Both legends that every guitar player should know not only by one mention or the name of a guitar. Lester was a brilliant composer, a great instrumentist and a genius of technology. Chester was a guitar player from another galaxy, the virtuous.
