To be fair, there's a pretty long tradition of men dressing up as women in British comedy (Monty Python for instance) and this was a comedic take on a popular British soap opera. So, Freddie showing up in a video as a female character wouldn't necessarily have made anybody assume he was gay or bi.

    • @PureShinigami
      @PureShinigami 5 років тому +1

Do you think it was more accepted because they knew(assumed by default) that the men were not gay or bi? You got a good point though. I reacted the same way when i watched the movie. I assumed it was a dead giveaway that he was gay or that people already knew and didn't care.

The "I Want To Break Free" music video was directed by David Mallet.
It was shot on 22 March and 4 May 1984 at Limehouse Studios and cost about £100,000.
The video spoofs the UK's ITV soap opera Coronation Street, as proposed by Roger Taylor:
"We had done some really serious, epic videos in the past, and we just thought we'd have some fun.
We wanted people to know that we didn't take ourselves too seriously, that we could still laugh at ourselves. I think we proved that."
The Queen members just had some fun with this video.
Dressing in drag for comedy is very common in the UK.
However, conservative MTV at the time thought the video was too controversial.
The video was banned from playing on MTV.
    However, VH1 played the video.
The video depicts Freddie as a housewife, loosely based on Bet Lynch, who wants to "break free" from his life.
Although Lynch was a blonde, Freddie thought he would look too silly as a blonde and chose a dark wig.
He wears a black wig, pink earrings, pink blouse with a sizeable false breast under it, black leather miniskirt, knee-high and heeled shoes.
During the rehearsals, Freddie realized that he couldn't walk freely in high-heeled shoes and settled on 2-inch ones.
Brian May plays another, more relaxed housewife based on Hilda Ogden. He's the women in bed who turns off the alarm and wears bunny slippers.
John Deacon appears as a conservative "grandma", whose is reading the newspaper.
While Roger Taylor plays a schoolgirl, who like Freddie wants a different life.
    Freddie loved ballet.
A poster depicting ballet dancer, Vaslav Nijinsky in costume for L'après-midi d'un faune, was the inspiration for the central section of the video.
Vaslav Nijinsky was a ballet dancer and choreographer cited as the greatest male dancer of the early 20th century.
The composition was choreographed by Wayne Eagling, a friend of Freddie who had helped him with the choreography of the "Bohemian Rhapsody".
Eagling was then a leader of the Royal Ballet which was involved in the video (one of the dancers was Jeremy Sheffield).
Freddie shaved his mustache to portray Vaslav Nijinsky as the faun in the ballet L'après-midi d'un faune.
The shooting took much practice, especially the conveyor rolling part.
According to Eagling, despite being a natural performer on stage, Freddie could not stand performing any choreographed act himself, which is why he was mostly picked up and moved around in the ballet part of the video.
The rehearsals with the Royal Ballet were organized by Eagling secretly from his superiors, something that placed him in serious trouble when it was discovered later.
There are a couple short videos about the making of this video.
Queen, Brian and Roger about the I Want To Break Free video-clip

Behind The Scenes - I Want To Break Free (Queen)
    ua-cam.com/video/uRQn8gkEfRM/v-deo.html
Queen and the director, David Mallet laughed and had fun making the video.
Just enjoy the video for fun and laughs, as Queen meant it to do.

I believe that the drag section of the video was a direct tribute to the British television series Coronation Street, and the other fantasy stuff is with the Royal Ballet, where they found out Freddie could not dance, (as they thought that he could), so they had to "carry" him around. He loved the ballet, so I understand.

TJ Shannon... Except THIS video made sense to everybody in Britain as this was a parody of their beloved long-running Coronation Street soap.
The song was meant to convey breaking free fruition the group BUT in classic dramatic Queen theatrics, this video morph into a situation of a woman wanting to break free from a trapped or loveless marriage. She's been flirting with Satan (Freddie with the fairy/elf ears) as he's getting the forbidden fruit...but she doesn't want to leave and this guy wasn't as serious 'bout her as she was 'bout him. She hates being in this situation but also is afraid of living on her own if this thing doesn't pan out.

It was a parody of a British show. called Coronation Street that featured men in drag, so it's supposed to be a funny story about a trashy housewife dreaming of a better life. It was John Deacon's idea to do the drag.

Freddie produced the song because he wanted to travel into the life of a woman of the time and see the struggles that they had to go through of doing all chores so thats why he chose the song to be called "I want to break free"

Okay. The bassist writes this song about each of them being more invested in side projects than just keeping Queen going. There's this joke that Queen feels old and stale like a sitcom.
So Freddie breaks from the group, goes on to do some random weird shit, and in the end realizes that Queen are his home. That's the narrative.

The drag part of the video is a parody of a long running (60's to present day) British soap opera called "Coronation Street", the rest of it is I reckon Freddie's expressionism - he always had a thing for the ballet and operatic side of things I think, and that would emerge somewhat again shortly after this with his work with Monserrat Caballe.

  • @hellsbells8689

Regarding the drag aspect of the video: In shakespearean times (around the 1600s) in Britain, women were not allowed to become actors, so all roles were performed by men, even the female roles. We have grown to know that this is a humorous thing and nothing to do with ones sexuality.
The traditional Christmas Pantomime, to this day, always features a man dressed in over the top female costumes, as the funny main character. The "Lead Boy", who is always the love interest of the pretty Cinderella type character, is always played by a woman. When the two are singing love songs to one another, no one is thinking "Oh boy, here's a bit of girl on girl action", we just go with the flow. Laugh at the funny parts, boo and hiss when the "Evil/Bad guy" comes on stage and cheer when the young lovers get together at the end. It's all very light hearted and tongue in cheek.
I don't ever remember anyone boycotting a Panto because of the drag aspect. We also do Vicars & Tarts parties. Often men go as the Tart. Again, all done for a bit of fun, nothing to do with sexuality.
This video was a parody/homage to the long running soap opera Coronation Street. For a laugh. :)

The story of the video is probably one of my favorite Freddie stories. A real famous French ballet group wanted to do something with Freddie after seeing the way he performs on stage at his concerts. Well, it turned out Freddie couldn't dance. And instead of scrapping the whole thing, they decided just to carry him around instead.

I'm glad you're enjoying the songs and music videos of Queen. I always enjoy seeing people's reaction to the band members in drag. LOL!
They are arguably one of the greatest rock bands to have ever been known. I think you should react to the music videos of some other Queen songs. Those songs are "Radio Ga Ga", "A Kind of Magic", "We Are The Champions", "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", and "These Are The Days Of Our Lives". I think you'll enjoy them, though I would advise for you to have a box of tissues nearby, if you ever get round to reacting to "These Are The Days Of Our Lives".

This song was written by John Deacon (Bass-Queen) and the drag was suggested by Roger (Queen - Drums). John had said it was about women being locked into a stereotypical role and wanting to break free of it. The women's characters were based on a popular English television show. So all the antics are opposite extremes from the lives of the women in the house. The piles of people were members of the Royal Ballet. The piles of bodies and Freddie going face first into the grapes, in my opinion, is hinting at an orgy and a feeding frenzy, both sort of the hight of personal and sexual freedom which obviously these women (band members) did not have in their lives. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

I think there's another video of this where the whole thing is the band in drag. John Deacon wrote the song. Yeah the ballet bits are crazy. Freddie was invited to perform with The Royal Ballet for a charity event. It seems they tried to teach him ballet, but he couldn't/wouldn't learn it, never liked choreography, just liked to do his own moves. By the time they figured this out it was too late, so they mostly just carried him around the stage as he sang. Bizarre & hilarious!

Also on the topic of that ambiguous dance sequence in the middle, I think Freddie was performing with that Ballet group at the time anyway, so was probably like why don’t we get them in for a music video? We’ve got a long musical section for this one, let’s eat some grapes and stuff.

Would love to see you do a little early Queen, "Liar" Official Video. But if you do, brace yourself. The look was Glam-rock (guyliner, black satin etc, very big in the early 70's) and the sound was a harder edged rock. Lots of tempo changes in this song. Early Queen and young Master Freddie rocked their asses off (& ours!) & it was glorious. As a performer yourself I'm sure (I hope) you appreciate Freddie's stage presence & charisma regardless of the time period or style. Really enjoying your reactions, you're reaching a lot of people doing Queen and other classic rock. Throwing in a little country is nice too. How about another Chris Stapleton reaction? I think you'd like "Death Row" and "Midnight Train to Memphis".
Bringing people and different cultural tastes together is a definitely a good thing.
