No special effects, No costume changes. Just a dude in a tank top with total command of everyone in the crowd. A spectacle that is unmatched by anything today.
@@drwugong Most definitely NOT a vest. It was technically an undershirt, known in the day as a "wife beater" when worn as a top. But tank would be an OK synonym. A vest slips on and buttons.
I was there, in 1985 with seven friends. We took an early train to London from Brighton and stood in a huge queue outside Wembley Stadium. Everyone was hyped, we all knew it was going to be a big day. The atmosphere was jumped. Someone would start singing, and we all joined in. No Woman No Cry, I remember us all singing that. We got in and made a beeline for front of stage, we ended up just in front of the big camera mount you can see in all the videos. It was a good spot. There were toilets at the back. That was about 8am. We waited for hours, and we sang more songs together because we had nothing else to do. We'd drunk all our beers in expectation, and then Charles and Diana finally appeared and it all kicked off. Status Quo with Rocking All over The World, and we went all in, finally, even though we couldn't hear the vocals. It didn't matter. They were good. They did their stuff. They got us going. Then it was all sorts of stuff I don't really remember, although Spandau Ballet were great and every band got us singing, because we wanted to sing anyway. Then there was a bit of a lull. I don't remember exactly, but there were a couple bands or whatever where we just all kind of deflated a bit. Not their fault, it was just time for a rest I guess. Or something. Anyway what happened was two vaguely famous idiots came on stage dressed as policemen and we didn't really hear what they said until they introduced Queen. We all roared. And I'll tell you why. Queen hadn't done anything the past few years but we all knew their songs. They weren't on the band list either, we didn't know they were going to be there. We'd had our rest, we were ready for more. And suddenly, there was Freddie on stage. Queen arrived, and owned us all from the first piano chord. And we went absolutely bonkers, all 90,000 of us. I'm a man of words, but I cannot describe to you what happened that day. Just that what you have seen, was a _tiny_ part of what happened in that enormous stadium when Freddie owned the world for those 25 iconic minutes. I was there with seven friends, three of whom have now passed away. But that was a time and place the rest of us all still live in. Just, the day we were there. EDIT: I originally and mistakenly said 1982 and there've been a few comments since! My bad. I've corrected it - it was 40ish years ago after all :). Still one of the best days of my life x
I was working a a small local TV station in the US. A couple of us played around with our spare satellite receiver to see if we could find the feed - and we did! Funny thing, a couple of the publicly funded stations here had the US rights to "Alas, Smith & Jones", I actually knew who they were. So happy to hear from someone who was actually there! I'm also a (real) football fan, remember thinking when the venue was announced, "Wembley?!? Holy s///, 80,000 people are gonna be there." Seems I wasn't off by much. Cheers from the US, and regards to your mates gone by.
You were so delightful to watch. Your tears gave me tears! Thank you! I am the same age as Freddie. We are both 75 years. Freddie in heaven, me in Seattle. I have been a fan forever. Thank you again! Bless you Queen and Freddie! 🥰
Gotta say, when I saw Queen in Oct it took awhile to find a good mix of taking videos and just immersing myself in the show. My fav video showing this is when I was taping the end of show God Save the Queen. I was recording, loudly cheering, but when Sir Dr Bri & Roger took their bow, I literally just threw my cell down. I was going to applaud PERIOD!!! Also refused to tape Radio Gaga...my hands were needed elsewhere. I do have a video from when the show started that showed every single person recording on their cells. Not a dim light at a single seat. I still have mixed feelings about that. Glad to have the videos, but kinda miss some shows where you simply fell into the music and left the real world for a few hours.
You do realize that most people didn’t have a portable video camera in 1984. You also realize that it was literally illegal to bring said cameras into the stadium.
The 80's were just simply the best! No worries, just my friends and girls of course just living our young carefree lives, concerts, beaches and the best memories
Well....i remember this performance on live aid in 1985 as a young kid and i question her authenticity. If anyone should be crying it should be me as a 50 something hairy arsed Brit that has some very real memories of this particular event. But i am not...and as a supposed first time listener, neither should she. I call BS
This performance blew everyone away. Everyone. The crowd was one of the best parts of the show. And yea, David Bowie was next in the lineup after Queen and supposedly said something to the effect of, “How do I compete with that?”
I was eternally grateful to my late Dad for taking me to this Concert @ Wembley Stadium when I was 12…. We were standing somewhere in the middle of the pitch with the 100,000 other fans. RIP Freddie the Legend 🙏♥️🙏
Couldn’t agree more. I was there too. I was 13. I remember the tube ride over from Tottenham, my heart was racing as it was my first ever concert. I’ll never forget all the bands and artists, but especially Queen.
It could have sold out many times too, the rest of the UK still watched it live on their TV's and sung along too. I don't know anyone who didn't watch it.
"And what instrument are you playing?" Freddie: "I'll play the audience, darling." Keep in mind, this is NOT solely a Queen concert. These people paid to see a great many bands that was the reception and reaction Queen got from the crowd. They absolutely stole the show. Freddie knew the stakes (as did the rest of the group) with literal billions of people watching onsite and remotely around the world, so they put in the rehearsal time to be perfect. They say on that day for 20 minutes, England had a different Queen.
@@TheMule71 I remember a story of her meeting Brian May years after he played on the Palace roof for a Jubilee .... she was "oh you were the man making a racket on my roof" or something similar. She meant it in good jest, and Bri laughs. Then the 75th had Rog, Bri, and Adam Lambert playing and you see the younger Royals rocking in the crowd.
Yes. Queen were the 16th out of 22 on the program at Wembley. Note that Freddy&Brian were back as act 20 out of 22. And then the program carried on in Philadelphia with 36 more acts. Phil Collins performed at both, 11th (with Sting) at Wembley and 27th in Philadelphia, travelling commercial on Concorde between. On another point: I'm sad that young people now probably don't have a clue who the two "policemen" are. Alas Smith (RIP), and Jones.
72,0000 people at Wembley, another 100,000 in Philadelphia, and 1,2 billion watching on TV globally. The Olympics have 3 satellites...Live Aid had 13. I wasn't a Queen fan at all, but after that day..I was lol! The world for Africa! I remember it was very hot that day in Wembley Stadium July 13th 1985 but it was worth it, best day in my life!
I saw Queen twice back in the 70's. This is how he always was when performing. He was great. Probably not his best performance. But as good as what I've seen.
Actually you are sort of right cos there were 90k live in Philadelphia in addition to the 72k in Wembley and of course 1.9 billion TV viewers linked by live satellite.
TV was on while I was doing chores in the garden & around the house during Live Aid; I was 16 & occasionally parents & me were following the bands. Little did I knew that it would be the best Queen performance remembered!
Awsome, im lucky enough to have seen Live Aid on the day (sadly only on TV) I was 16 and I remember how warm the weather was in England. It was an experience unlike anything thats happened to the music industry since. The build up to the event was so big with everyone doing their bit to raise money for Africa. The show was the icing on the cake and the reward (for want of a better word) that we had eagerly awaited and it didn't disappoint. All our favourite artists on one stage was a dream come true for anyone who's life was moulded around music. I remember in the quiet Village that I grew up in everyone's windows were wide open because it was a hot summers day and Live Aid blasted out from each one so that no matter where you were in the house or garden you could still here it, the whole country was glued to their TV. Just a magical experience! Such a fond memory. The crowd in the old Wembley stadium were already hyped up because of the massive build up to the event, you have to remember in the UK that we only had 3 TV channels at that time and no mobile phones tablets, internet or modern games consoles or computers so this event was like out of this world for us in 1985. Imagine the excitement of seeing all of you favourite bands all on the same day play all of your favourite songs in a very famous stadium, it was like a drug and we couldn't get enough of it and didn't want it to end but when it did finaly come to a close many of us just stayed staring at our screens in disbelief it was over. They had another go at it some years later but it was never going to have the same impact, you just can't repeat the 85 performances, modern groups just don't share or have the same stage presence. I envy the ones who were there in person at Wembley in 85 but im grateful to have been lucky enough to watched it all on TV. Queen gave it their all as did so many other artists and I can't believe its nearly 40 years ago! Your tears came while watching this reaction video but they were not alone, every time I watch it (many times) it brings back memories of good times and innocents of my youth. I wish you could have witnessed the whole show live yourself at the time when most of the songs performed were still in the charts or close to it, you would have loved it. 👏👏👏
I'm the same. Never been a big Queen fan, I like them but I'm not a fanatic. But something about Freddie is captivating. His physical charisma, his voice, all of it goes together. He's probably the best frontman ever.
I can’t imagine a more fitting tribute to Freddie than having such a beautiful woman be so overcome with emotion watching him almost 40 years after this performance. I remember watching it when I was 14, but to watch it again with such emotion so many years later??? Thank you for giving that to me Stacey.
ditto - no need to apologize Stacey. Good to see that Queen's performance impacted you so much. I saw it live 40 years ago and it captures me just as much now.
No autotuners here. No special effects No wild costumes just the power and beauty of his voice. He gold that whole stadium in the palm of his hand even those who were not queen fans the greatest showman ever and no one has ever equalled freddy or queen
There’s a great side-by-side of this performance with the movie performance. They did a fantastic job re-creating it. It was great to watch this live on television and it’s hard to believe he’s gone. Long live Queen
Yup! And many don't know he and Brian came on later in the show & did an acoustic version of "Is This The World we Created" (yes, it's on YT) and you can hear his voice breaking down. He still sounds brilliant (it's Freddie) but you can hear his voice is raspy). It's why he didn't have a solo in the group number "Do They Know It's Christmas" at the end of the show. They asked him, but he was scared his voice wouldn't hold. (although he was out there singing & clapping as part of the group). He truly gave it all that night!
If you look at the armband that he wore, it slips. It was there to cover the lesion on his arm. It was one of the most memorable performances by any band ever.
I was stationed in the UK in the US Air Force at the time. A couple of friends and I went to the show not knowing what to expect. It was a great show, then Queen appeared. Words fail me now to describe it, as words failed me then. We sang when Freddie wanted us to sing, we did the Radio Gaga hand dance. Part of me is still there just as Im sure part of everyone who was there that day is still there. Some lifetimes are defined by moments. In this case a moment has defined a lifetime.
@@TucsonHippy I was living in Isleham at the time, a stone's throw from there and Mildenhall AFB... beautiful part of the country! (lol, it autocorrected)
No cell phones, no autotune, a crowd a mile deep and a showman leading the way. I saw this performance live and tear up unashamedly over Freddie being gone too soon. Pure star power effortlessly leading the crowd.
Love your reaction 😢 still watching 😢....my family watched the show back 1985.. Was amazing then and still is💞💞👏👏👏 and not a phone in sight 😊 beautiful concert to this day
It's worth remembering that Queen's popularity was on the wane and the Live Aid audience were not exclusively Queen fans. I've read that even though this was a charity gig, Queen went into a solid three weeks of rehearsals, and boy, did it show. You're right, Stacey; Queen totally stole the show even though they were not a "headline" act. Freddie, Brian, Roger and John grabbed the audience from the first bar and held their attention for the full 22-minute set. I'm an old man now, and I first saw Queen aged 16 in 1975 at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, and I have loved their music ever since. The world is a much better place for having had Freddie Mercury in it. Rest in love and peace, Freddie. x
I'm the same as you and I'm 61 and i was so blessed to see them live and I'm sure that you know exactly where you were on the day he passed away i had to stop driving as i was a right mess 🍻
Stacey, your emotions reflect how every Queen fan in the world feels when they see this. The timing of the performance that day, the occasion and it's importance, the fact that Freddie Mercury was beginning his downward spiral of health and still managed to conduct that crowd like an orchestra with an energy and charisma that hasn't been matched since. That day the music mattered more than anytime in history and Queen were at the centre of it all. Also, people like yourself are vital in carrying the torch for this wonderful performance and for Freddie himself. New generations of fans must never let this moment be forgotten.
Beautifully stated, and .... technically accurate! covering both the right and left brain hemispheres, you nailed it! Peace my friend, and love to all you love.
I love your reaction, thank you for sharing it with us! Freddie touched people's hearts and he still does today. He loved the audience and the people loved him. That strong bond between the audience and Freddie - no one else could do that.
I was an American living in the UK at the time and was here (I was 16)! Something that makes this performance even more astounding is that the people were not here for Queen. This was not a stadium filled with Queen fans, but music fans in general, with disparate tastes, and to grip and work a crowd who were not here just to see you is amazing... especially since the show started at noon and it was now about 7:30pm. I started traveling at 6am to get to London and get into Wembly stadium before noon. The entire London show ran until 10pm.(And I still had a 4hr train journey home to face.) Talk about a long, tiring and all around wonderful day.
So envious. I was too young to be that into music, saw some of the concert with a friend's older brothers who were watching it on TV, but most of the time I wanted to be outside in the garden playing. It must have been so amazing to actually have been there in this moment of history. I'm sure there were a lot of Queen fans there, but you're right, the majority were there for many other bands or just the occasion and music in general.
I was there! I’m now 61 on 3rd September and r ember this spectacle like it was yesterday. I was so blessed to experience this spectacle. You are right, there is/was an incredible affinity between Queen and music lovers, it felt like one big family. Sadly Freddie has moved on to sing among the angels. His music lives on thanks to wonderful people like you. To see and feel your love and emotion brings tears to my eyes, you get it, you understand the utter delirium felt listening to any of Freddie’s masterpieces. Thank you for all your hard work, always producing incredible content and never being afraid to wear your heart on your sleeve and sharing your emotions. Please stay beautiful with a pure heart and love every new experience. X
AndyH, I was there too! One of the most amazing concerts ever, everything after Queen was struggling to perform as they did! Amazing. Saw Queen at Wembly in '86 too supported by the Alarm and Status Quo, the 'Kind of Magic' tour! Simply amazing, never forgotten, terribly missed!
I was watching you guys from our little TV in California! The whole world was captivated, I can't fathom the experiences you both went through! Thank you for sharing.❤
I was there also. And I'm also 61. The best years of music, besides my wife ( we went together as our 3rd date ) and my kids and grandkids, these were the greatest days of my life
He was showing symptoms of AIDS, but it was two years after the gig that he was given the diagnosis. The movie wasn't 100% accurate with the timing, but most of the real-life events that had happened were still made clear.
Thank you for doing this. My favorite video to show people for performance and crowd reaction. I was crying the same time you were, and I have seen this video multiple times. It just gets me.
As an old 80s rocker dude, crying when you hear Freddie sing live is the appropriate response. I do knowing I’ll never have the thrill of hearing him live again.
There will never, ever be another artist like Freddie Mercury. Not only was he an incredible singer bordering on the impossible, but he was a true showman at concerts. His mere presence was enough for the stadiums to collapse before the roar of applause and screams from the public. No one has even managed to achieve something like that in recent times, because Freddie's magic and charisma were from another universe. Even today, after so many years of this concert and many more of his death, he continues to conquer hearts, move crowds and bring tears to those people who, although they only know him through videos, see in him an artist like few others in the world. Together with Queen, I could classify them as the best of all time...unique and unrepeatable. I know, I have not forgotten Michael Jackson or other artists who have left an indelible mark on the musical history of our times...but Freddie and Queen are and will forever be on their own and only podium.
I remember watching this as a kid. It was such a hot day in London and they packed Wembley Stadium to the rafters with people. Probably not be allowed these days. My mum told me that what we was watching on TV was something special. how right she was. I also remember Phil Collins playing on stage in London and then Flying on Concorde to play at the other live aid concert in Philadelphia a few hours later. Epic.
Told you so! ^^ You crying in the first few minutes after having known Queen for such a short time says a *lot* about you. I've known Queen all my life, and I've been known to well up listening to Freddie, too. Thank you so much for this reaction! I watched most of the show on my grandma's little kitchen TV when it aired live, and while I remember quite a bit more, Queen stood head and shoulders above the rest even to a little squirt of a kid like me. That afternoon made a lifelong Queen fan out of me. Yes, this gig made headlines. People knew back then how special it was, and it revitalized not only the interest in Queen (which had been waning), but also Queen's desire to go another round (they'd been in a not so good place for a while and weren't sure how and even if they should keep working together). Thank God it did, because this heralded my favorite phase of Queen, even though it would soon turn out to be the last one. You do realize, however, that you're now obligated to react to pretty much every Queen song ever, do you? 😉
Stacey, it's literally one of the most touching and heartfelt reaction to videos I've ever seen. Enormous job! I've watched Queen Live Aid performance tens of times, and I'm never bored but always moved to tears. This watch was no exception.
By far the best reaction I have seen to the genius of Freddie & Queen. Stacey, you understand just how good they were. Your soul is pure. You have a new subscriber....
A thing to note is that the crowd are not specifically Queen fans. They are here to see a variety of bands - and yet- he still has them ALL in the palm of his hands!
I remember the main headlines like Phil Collins traveling from London to Philly to perform, and Zeppelin getting back together. But Queen's set and Radio Gaga was just mind boggling.
Not only that, Queen was a later edition to the show. So when people bought tickets, they had not been advertised. So it's not like folks there went because Queen was appearing. And they went on late afternoon when the crowd was pretty dead. They did an amazing job at CPR hehe
@@ellenw391 Not only THAT, Queen had been kind of written off as has-beens at this point believe it or not. They had gotten so much bad press for playing before segregated audiences in south africa just the year before. NO one had expected them to be the band that stole the show - but they did. I forget which artist was saying that among the other artists waiting to play backstage, there was just like an air of dread and kind of anger lol that they stole the show and they did :)
Its ok to cry, I'm watching this 40 years later & crying too. True entertainers & hearing his voice even now is so emotional. Bless you for your honest reaction x
What happend that night, at that concert, was something absolutley magical. It was to become the greatest performance on earth, and it has never been matched since then. Freddie was the ultimate performer, bare none. Even to date.
Yes for sure, one of a kind I love him R.I.P Freddie Mercury. It was an honor to have seen you live in 1980 at a concert in the Netherlands. I remember it as if it were yesterday.that was absolutley magic.
I'm new to your channel, just watched the Snuff reaction then this and I think I may have fallen in love seeing you grooving and tearing up to Radio gaga despite never hearing it before. This performance is the one place in history I'd love to be able to travel back to. What a showman, what an atmosphere, what a voice.
What you have just witnessed, Stacey, is the best rock and roll frontman in history. Few interesting facts about this performance: 1. Freddie performed against doctor's orders with (of all things) laryngitis 2. That kiss you saw him blow towards the camera after the first verse of Bohemian Rhapsody was for his Mother - he promised her he'd blow her a kiss from the stage while she watched from home live on TV. 3. David Bowie was up on stage after Queen, and after they left the stage Bowie approached the band and said "you bastards!! How the hell am I meant to follow that up??" 😂
I just wished they hadn’t invited DB on stage and had done Under Pressure that would have been a great hand over. Stacy just watch Freddie v the crowd - it’s longer and funnier and ends with Typical Freddie humour . I was there for it , not for Live Aid sadly
I am a 63 year old guy from London and have had the good fortune of seeing Queen 5 times, the best live band along with Pink Floyd ,love your reaction and how emotional it made you.x
I'm 67 also a man from London and saw Queen live at the Rainbow theatre in the mid 70's. Till this day that concert holds a place in my heart. I took get very emotional seeing this performance.
The thing to remember is this isn't a Queen concert, there were all sorts of performers that day, but Freddie has a way of getting a crowd under his spell. Incredible
I remember the whole thing being rather flat during the course of the morning and early afternoon, with the crowd very fractured and seemingly bored. Then enter Queen and the irresistible performer in Freddie who turned it all upside down.
I think the most telling anecdote from this event would be this: David Bowie was the next artist after Queen and, when Freddy, Brian, John, and Roger returned backstage after that performance, he confronted them, saying: _You bastards! How the hell am I supposed to go on after THAT???_
Luv, I’m crying with you. I was blessed to watch on tv, this performance. Us GenX’s had so many artist across the music spectrum that touched your soul, your core. You’re reaction touched my heart… and I thank you.
Check out the video of the Green Day concert, where they played Bohemian Rhapsody as a pre-concert warm-up. The crowd sang the entire song, word for word. Keep in mind, the crowd was there to see Green Day.
My son was 10 when I took him to see their Hella Mega Tour in Pittsburgh in 2021. Both of us are HUGE Queen fans, and when the music for BohRap came on, we were both singing! It was such a beautiful moment, in an amazing concert! 💚🖤❤️
Thank you showing this and your emotional response. Now imagine being 14 years old dancing and singing in front of your television, celebrating your heroes together with 1.5 billion people around the world…. Still sends me shivers only remembering the feeling.❤
"an estimated audience of 1.9 billion, in 150 nations" if you take the population of those 150 countries you get ~1.9 billion which implies everybody from those countries watched or listened the broadcast.
I witnessed Queen on two occasions, one in 1981 and the other one in 1982. The last one I had tickets way up front in the second row. I could reach the stage. That was amazing. I’m old now and it was worth it! ❤️
Your reaction was 100%, perfectly correct. This is why old, gray-haired guys like me feel wildly blessed to have been alive through this era of music, and to have witnessed things like this with our own eyes in real time. Simply by the nature of how media, music, and culture has changed, I'm not sure we will ever see the likes of this again. That's why it's CRITICAL that young people like yourself experience these things after the fact; it would be criminal for this to suddenly just go away. And like other people are saying in these comments, watching a young person experience this for the first time is incredibly special the "more seasoned" among us, including myself. It brings everything back to us as if it's the first time. Amazing! Hands down, these reaction videos are my favorite thing about UA-cam. Thank you for sharing this, Stacey.
As another partly-gray, slowly-getting-toward-old guy who grew up with this music, it's great to see this younger generation not just listening to it, but GETTING it, LOVING it, FEELING it, and sharing it with their peer group.
I’m 23 years old thanks to my parents this was the music I grew up on. Queen is one of my favourite bands of all time. Rock it’s not going anywhere for as long as I live and Rock will never die🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Ah yes, the days when a crowd could clap, wave their hands and participate without having to hold up damned smartphones! By the way, if you want to see a really huge crowd singing along with Freddie, check out "Love Of My Life" live in Rio if you haven't already done so. That really WILL make you cry!
You found Queen’s 20 minutes where 1/3 of the world watched them. The crowd didn’t all begin being Queen fans but they all were by the end. This was a great moment in rock history showing master musicians show how it’s done. Go down the Queen rabbit hole and find all their gems! ❤RIP Freddie -genius.
I was a huge Mott the Hoople fan and went to see them at Hammersmith Odeon the Support group were Queen this was before their first album 1973 (I worked in a record shop) and next day ordered it for the shop
Absolutely this was the moment they crossed over to America after all their years of performing. I was always a fan and bought their albums in the seventies, yes albums. Sadly he left us not to long after
@eileenbaran7040 - This was NOT the moment that they crossed over to America. 3 years earlier they played on Saturday Night Live in September 1982 after having 2 #1 hits in the U.S. in 1980("Another One Bites The Dust" & "Crazy Little Thing Called Love")/following up on the popularity of their collaboration with David Bowie("Under Pressure") the prior year. The band's final concert performance with Freddie in the U.S.A. was in February 1982. Due to the scandal in the U.S. over their video for "I Want To Break Free", they lost a lot of their American audience, and didn't really recover until after Freddie died, and Wayne's World reintroduced "Bohemian Rhapsody" to a whole new generation. And Freddie died 6 years after Live Aid in November 1991😢
@@FreddyKurganNimmo True but it was the day that Americans were reminded of their brilliance and because of their brilliant performance they gained new fans and popularity. 😍
I came across your channel and you have a lifetime viewer! You are why I watch reaction videos…there is nothing I enjoy more than connecting/watching someone who has the same emotions as I do with music. This is the best live performance of all time. No one has ever captured a crowd like Mercury - and no one ever will. Thanks for appreciating pure art.
July 1985. Live Aid, Two billion viewers worldwide. I was one of them. In the U.S. Air Force, just returned from a year in Turkey, stationed just outside of Boston. I was in a Goodyear service center lobby, waiting for Chrome rims and white lettered tires to be installed. Lobby had a dozen customers. Live Aid on a small over the air TV. Queen was announced. Manager yells out to the 10 or so mechanics. All work stopped. Customers, employees we all huddled around the TV and sang to every song. Will never forget that 20 minutes.
U.S. Air Force here as well, was on my first duty assignment in Germany when this went down. Enjoyed all the bands, but when Queen was anounced on stage when they were not on the list..people around me on base went crazy. That whole DAAAOOo..still gets me, not just his presence on stage..everyone was ONE...thats what chills me with warmth and tears to my eyes.
Yours is the most honest, raw and heart felt reaction I've ever seen of this concert. You single highhandedly have shown everyone the power of live music.
More than a billion people watched this performance around the globe. This size of audience is never likely to be repeated since the sad and untimely death of our old friend, live TV. In the old days, entire national populations would sit in their respective living rooms, all at the same time, staring at a glass-fronted wooden box, while periodically glancing at their watches, waiting for a show, concert or some other form of entertainment to start. Now that there are thousands of sources of entertainment to choose from, that global attention is spread far too thinly for something like Live Aid to occur ever again. It's sad, but time to embrace the present. There's no point in harking back to the past like a sad old git. Thanks for your heartfelt reaction, from me, a sad old git.
Queen stole the show. People forget it was televised to the US as well. Queen practiced for a week in a warehouse with a timer to make sure they had the set flawless.
And also important to add tha the crowd were doing the Radio GaGa handclaps copying the original music video sequence to it. It wasn't really spontaneous as this presenter thinks it is. But I'm nit-picking ;)
The peak of Freddie and Queen. When some of us had forgotten them... Freddie grabbed us and made us see!! He was an artist and showman. Yes, and tears! Because he is gone, not forgotten!
The 2 billion of us who watched this live on TV pretty much agree with everything you said here. Queen stole the show with half the world's population watching.
Queen is another amazing band I got to see perform live, this time at an amphitheater in Irvine, CA. Freddie was leaping from one Marshall amp to another to another. On one occasion, he leaped to the piano, then the piano bench and sang Bohemian Rhapsody. Man, what a show!!!!
I was a young Army soldier stationed at Ft Bragg North Carolina , on the Saturday afternoon that this was aired. I was at a friends house at a cookout with many of our friends from our battalion. We were all cutting up , cooking burgers and hot dogs out in the yard, and generally being guys when Queen came on the TV inside the den which was just beyond the backyard through the sliding glass doors. We noticed that all of the commotion that was up till then happening inside had ceased. So we all went in when we heard Freddie's unmistakable voice , and all of sat silently , captivated for the 20 plus minutes watching what has since become the greatest live performance in history. When Queen was finished we sat stunned in silence. It was a few moments later that some one said DAMN ...FELLAS I THINK WE JUST WITNESSED HISTORY IN THE MAKING . THAT WAS STELLAR! How right that person was..we talked about it for weeks. and of course it made worldwide headlines for months. People just do not realize how influential , and truly astounding a phenomenon that Queen were. They have influenced everyone in the industry from Country singer Garth Brooks, to Kiss, to legendary rapper M C Hammer. Lady GaGa herself was a HUGE fan and took her very stage name from the Queen song sung in the show, " Radio GaGa" . yeah folks Queen truly was to pop Rock music what Mozart was to classical . RIP Freddie you are truly missed.
Freddie and Brian came back out at the end of the night for another song. Go to the search field and type Live Aid Is This The World We Created. Lots of people don't know about that extra song. As for your reaction Stacey, you did a fantastic job. We're not here to see a robot. We're here to see someone get hit with a wave of emotions just like we all did when we saw it for the first time. Also, Phil Collins played BOTH London and Philadelphia concerts by playing London first and then jumping into a Concorde and flying Mach 1 to Philadelphia to play live there too. Not many musicians can lay clim to such a feat!
Freddie (and Brian) could rock but he had the talent to sing ballads and slower beautiful songs as well. Here is a link to the "Love of My Life" and "Is This the World We Created" performances: ua-cam.com/video/nEiY3rjpAmA/v-deo.html&ab_channel=QueenLiveShow
What a wonderful reaction. I grew up among musicians from 3 generations back, and my love for music has never faded. As for your musical observations you didn't say anything wrong or made comments that needs correcting. You actually noticed their very superior vocal work when harmonizing, and that was certainly a trademark of theirs. If you like powerful rock bands that have the capacity to both sing powerful rock and harmonize beautifully at the same time, I suggest you try listening to the iconic rock group "YES". I totally loved your reaction to this beautiful performance. I am a very emotional person myself, and I got that from my dear late dad. I sometimes went with him for a classical or jazz concert, and after just a few minutes he was just sitting there mesmerized by the talent and beauty, bawling his eyes out from the sheer pleasure the music conveyed. You made me remember my sweet father with great fondness - thank you. Needless to say I of course both liked and subscribed. You seem like a beautiful soul. I wish you all the best in life. Thank you for a beautiful moment.❤
@@nickchivers9029 greatest male Vocalist is alive today and lead singer of many bands actually...he's 4 notes away from 7 octaves.... His name is Mike Patton
@low-keyinvestor8646 it's that person's opinion and many others. Also I'm sure most people don't know who this Mike guy is in comparison to all the people who know Freddy. Also being a truly great singer and performer/ personality isn't about how many octaves you can reach...
I was 16 and watched every minute of live aid that day, on live TV. It was Queen who stole the show. This performance touched me for life. It is incredible to see someone moved to tears 40 years later, the way I was as a teen 4 decades ago Thank you for reacting to it.
I was as well but had to go out just before the who played. So listened to it in the car not realising it was not broadcast on the TV. So I didn't miss anything
I was at Wembley that day. The Radio GaGa handclaps was one of those rare moments when you know, right at the moment that something is happening, that you’re going to remember it for the rest of your life. And so it has proved.
That’s a real rock star right there. They’ll never be anything like him ever again. I watched this live when I was 13 years old. I also saw them personally live in 1982.
A great performance, especially taking in mind all the circumstances ..... but not even on the top 5 of Queen concerts. Hyde park, Rainbow, Montreal, Hammersmith, Wembley, Milton Keynes .....etc. They where THAT good.
I was 15 when this event happened and I wasn't going to miss any of it and I didn't. Freddie had 70,000 fans and 1.6 billion people in the palm of his hand that day. He was fabulous and when he played the camera for the audience at home I was feeling it from my living room. I was already a huge Queen fan and that day I was watching with my Dad and he became a Queen fan that day too. RIP dear Freddie you are still loved and missed to this day. Great reaction as usual girl and Peace out 🙏 ✌️ ☮️
There were actually over 1 Billion people world wide that were watching this amazing concert. I've been a Queenie for 47 plus years and you my dear are a true Queenie now and Freddie would've definitely loved you and your passion for exceptional music! To this day I can't take my eyes off of this man! Great reaction! 👀🫶👑💙
1985 was a great year. My mother and I watched the Live Aid concert nearly all day. She was a heavy Queen fan and I still am a heavy David Bowie fan. What a fantastic occasion that day was. Great to see the emotion as this brought back great memories for me, I remember it like it was yesterday. You have another sub. Take care.
I'm 63. I had just turned 25 when this concert took place at Wembley Stadium in London on July 13, 1985. The first time I saw it I was awestruck. I felt the same the 10th time. And the 30th. And every time since. I didn't think watching it could get any better than it already was for me. But watching your emotional reaction to a performance that took place before you were even born added a whole new level of joy for me. To be honest, I was watching you more than Queen's performance because it reminded me of just how incredible Freddy Mercury and Queen were and how timeless their music is. To add a little additional context to this performance, there were a huge number of superstars who performed at Live Aid, including Elvis Costello, Sade, Sting, U2, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Elton John and Paul McCartney, among many others. Queen, by all accounts, was undeniably the best performance of the concert. If you haven't already seen the movie Bohemian Rhapsody about Freddy and Queen, you should watch because Rami Malek's re-creation of this performance during the Live Aid concert is EXACTLY like watching this actual concert footage again. Amazing.
I have just turned 68, I am the same. Watched it all on the day and I have watched this so many times I have lost count. A shout out for Bowie and Heroes, watched that a hundred times too. All of the other stars, who were all world famous, paled into insignificance.
Watched this performance live on tv back then and gave me goose bumps, today it still gives me goose bumps! Probably the best live performance in music history ❤️🇬🇧
I saw this live way back it was legendary and am humbled i live during the time Queen n Freddie were weaving magic! To see this Stacey and your response here just reinforced this! Awesome!
As a 12 year old, I will never forget watching this live. Burned into my memory. Not a real Queen fan but I still have never witnessed a singer/band that had audience completely captivated to point of single complete synergy with them. Freddie felt it. One of best rock moments ever
A Queen performance was "a kind of magic" that was, is and will never be repeated. R.I.P. Freddie. God bless John, Brian and Roger for creating legendary music 🙏💙.
Such an iconic performance. I highly recommend U2's set from Live Aid, particularly their version of "Bad" I think Queen and U2 were the two best performances at this concert.
Several amazing things about this performance...over 72 thousand in attendance at Wembley Stadium in London, Freddie had a throat infection, and was advised to cancel, and the best part was that when Queen left the stage, the following act was David Bowie who said to Freddie, "You want me to follow THAT ?"
@StaceyRPG This was the very first concert I ever went to. I was 13 years old and lived 8 miles from Wembley Stadium. I’m now 52 and have been to hundreds of Concerts and festivals and have NEVER experienced anything like Queen at Live Aid ever since. 72,000 people, no phones, all just living in the moment, experiencing the music and the enormity of what we were experiencing. The noise was deafening. Something I’ll never forget.
The passion, soul and conviction he sings with packaged with his supernatural vocal talent can be QUITE moving. That's leaving out his stage presence and charisma. The man is an absolute LEGEND. The rest of the band are musical geniuses, also making Queen the absolute greatest band of all time. They are their own genre of music.
72 Thousand in Wembley Stadium and via satellite TV 1.5 Billion people watching LIVE! That song Radio Ga-Ga is where Lady Ga-Ga got her stage name, "Crazy little thing called LOVE" is Freddie's tribute to Elvis, Also there is this: Someone asked Freddie what instrument did he play and his reply was "The Audience, Darling, The Audience. No matter the size of the crowd, you always had the feeling that he was singing just to you and you only. Still has that feeling all these years later. Thank you for your reaction, even after all these years, every time I hear Freddie, I still have tears. Welcome to the World of Freddie Mercury & Queen!
No special effects, No costume changes. Just a dude in a tank top with total command of everyone in the crowd. A spectacle that is unmatched by anything today.

Great comment.
because he had actual talent not like the "artists" of today
I mean, it's a vest but yes.
@@drwugong Most definitely NOT a vest. It was technically an undershirt, known in the day as a "wife beater" when worn as a top. But tank would be an OK synonym. A vest slips on and buttons.
Almost 40yrs later and Freddie Mercury still has audiences in the palm of his hand. RIP, Freddie.
The queen is dead, long live the queen!
Freddie always said that the audience should be part of the show not just watching it. He involved them like no else did.

Same here. Watched it live back the day
Considering Freddie was struggling here, he managed to knock this out and went down in history. A true performer!
Tears flowing. Grew up on Queen. The great ones leave us too soon.
My brother.
Ditto, bro! I was living it too!
When asked what his favorite instrument to play was, Freddie said, "The audience, dear!" And boy did he play that audience!
he did put on a excellent show
wow didnt know that, even that reply is amazing lol
Pure talent
Hahaha, that cheekyness. So Freddie.
He was an amazing performer such an artist and front man
I was there, in 1985 with seven friends.
That's amazing man, experience of a lifetime!
Did you mean to say 1985? Or the queue was so long you needed to be there 3 years earlier to catch a spot, still worth the wait if you ask me!
1982?????????. I was there but not 1982
Cool! 🎶🕺🏼🎶
You were so delightful to watch. Your tears gave me tears! Thank you! I am the same age as Freddie. We are both 75 years. Freddie in heaven, me in Seattle. I have been a fan forever. Thank you again! Bless you Queen and Freddie! 🥰
I was brought to tears thinking he might not be in heaven. I so hope he was saved and is with the Lord forever. And we can meet in fellowship.
No cell phones,

All Hail Queen 🙏❤
You must watch Freddie with Opera star Monsarat Cabaille singing “Barcelona”.
You do realize this was recorded with a camera just like your phone has right?
You do realize that most people didn’t have a portable video camera in 1984. You also realize that it was literally illegal to bring said cameras into the stadium.
The 80's were just simply the best! No worries, just my friends and girls of course just living our young carefree lives, concerts, beaches and the best memories
The fact that you were crying during the performance tells me you have a beautiful soul. Thank you for sharing that with us. 🤗
This girl really gets it.. Freddie and Queen are timeless. Absolute showmanship
Best band ever
Well....i remember this performance on live aid in 1985 as a young kid and i question her authenticity. If anyone should be crying it should be me as a 50 something hairy arsed Brit that has some very real memories of this particular event. But i am not...and as a supposed first time listener, neither should she. I call BS
Please remember that Queen were NOT PAID for their set !!

lol it got me emotional watching her getting emotional 🤣
Queen are alive in 2024
This performance blew everyone away. Everyone. The crowd was one of the best parts of the show. And yea, David Bowie was next in the lineup after Queen and supposedly said something to the effect of, “How do I compete with that?”
He did a great job. Heroes was an iconic performance as well.
I was eternally grateful to my late Dad for taking me to this Concert @ Wembley Stadium when I was 12…. We were standing somewhere in the middle of the pitch with the 100,000 other fans. RIP Freddie the Legend 🙏♥️🙏
What a memory! What a great dad!
Wow that would of been amazing 👌
Couldn’t agree more. I was there too. I was 13. I remember the tube ride over from Tottenham, my heart was racing as it was my first ever concert. I’ll never forget all the bands and artists, but especially Queen.
It could have sold out many times too, the rest of the UK still watched it live on their TV's and sung along too. I don't know anyone who didn't watch it.
How many people was that ???
"And what instrument are you playing?" Freddie: "I'll play the audience, darling."
Keep in mind, this is NOT solely a Queen concert.
Her Majesty was probably singing along.
Reaccióna a The Show Must Go On de Queen
Don't know who said it, but "For about 20 minutes, England was ruled by a different Queen".
I’m a firm believer there will never be another preformer like Freddie, he was 100% one of a kind and God rest his soul❤️
Same for my King Elvis Aaron Presley.

This is widely regarded as the best live performance ever. Freddie Mercury could always hold the entire audience in the palm of his hand.
I saw Queen twice back in the 70's. This is how he always was when performing. He was great. Probably not his best performance. But as good as what I've seen.
On July 13th 1985 England was ruled by a different Queen for one day - And I was fortunate to be there ❤

@@hmmerfall I was 2, and in Germany, but still ... same.
72.000 people stadium, 90.000 estimated ... but most of all: 1.5 billion (billion, not million) watching live around the globe.
Actually you are sort of right cos there were 90k live in Philadelphia in addition to the 72k in Wembley and of course 1.9 billion TV viewers linked by live satellite.
Over 1.5 billion clapping at the same time. What a f@ckin epic life experience!
TV was on while I was doing chores in the garden & around the house during Live Aid; I was 16 & occasionally parents & me were following the bands.
Little did I knew that it would be the best Queen performance remembered!
1.5 billion is unlikely as the world population was 5 billion back then.
@SimonT-xo7qf Google it. If its hard to believe
I'm not particularly a Queen fan, but I still think Freddie was the greatest, the most charismatic front man ever.
I'm the same. Never been a big Queen fan, I like them but I'm not a fanatic. But something about Freddie is captivating. His physical charisma, his voice, all of it goes together. He's probably the best frontman ever.

He was also sick, and doctors told him not to do it, but he said f-u and gave us the single best performance of all time.
Nothing will stop Freddie for doing this
Yeah, I was going to mention that he was ill coming into this show. Plus the crowd was awesome considering they were not just Queen fans.

One of the most sincere reactions I've seen. Freddie will always be in our hearts.
Rest in love and peace, Freddie. x
How to put yourselves back on the world stage in 22 minutes!
The greatest showman to ever live. Rest in peace Freddie, you're still rocking heaven.
I seen Bon Scott live and I always thought Bon was the best front man ever but you could be right.
There’ll never be another band like the great seventies bands
Thank you for taking our Freddie into your heart. Means a lot to us and we miss him so much. You are a perfect audience and a star. 💝
Freddie wrote Crazy thing called love as a tribute to Elvis after he died. Love your appreciation of my favourite band. 😁👍🏾
Don't apologise about the crying. I cried on the day. I cry every time I watch it. I'm crying now.
I'm the same as you and I'm 61 and i was so blessed to see them live and I'm sure that you know exactly where you were on the day he passed away i had to stop driving as i was a right mess 🍻
Not me...I just had a stupid smile on my face through the whole vid. We were blessed to see this genius at work.

Beautifully said ❤
Beautifully stated, and .... technically accurate! covering both the right and left brain hemispheres, you nailed it!
God call
Greatest gig ever, And I believe Freddie wasn't well but still pulls a performance out of the hat like this. Amazing.♥️🏴
And that isn't even Queens largest audience ever.

Oh how you must treasure the memory. A unique experience, how fortunate you were!
I was there also. And I'm also 61. The best years of music, besides my wife ( we went together as our 3rd date ) and my kids and grandkids, these were the greatest days of my life
ditto and echo your words 100% - Was there to and now almost 60 but it's the one concert I'll never forget :-)
Freddie had a bad throat that day and was told not to perform by the doctors so that makes his vocal performance even more remarkable.
That crowd . . . plus probably about half of the World's population watching on TV! This was an ASTONISHING Day!
As an old 80s rocker dude, crying when you hear Freddie sing live is the appropriate response. I do knowing I’ll never have the thrill of hearing him live again.
I believe in Eternal Life so we will hear it!!!
He died the year before I was born 😢 You lived in a once-in-history moment.

Epic.
I'm 59 and still gets me so don't worry if you cry. Rock in peace Freddie. Great reaction lady. ❤ from 🇮🇹
I'm from England 63yrs watched only on TV but live ha ha ....still gives me chills and crying watching it now with YOU all
I'm sure I remember reading some where it was supposed to be a tribute to elvis in some small way
Yep. I am 60 and saw this live in Australia.
Told you so! ^^
You crying in the first few minutes after having known Queen for such a short time says a *lot* about you.
Agree, that is a fabulous review and emotion at this great performance...was exactly the same on Live Aid when we watched it live back in 85
By far the best reaction I have seen to the genius of Freddie & Queen. Stacey, you understand just how good they were. Your soul is pure. You have a new subscriber....
A thing to note is that the crowd are not specifically Queen fans. They are here to see a variety of bands - and yet- he still has them ALL in the palm of his hands!
Just watch Queen live at wembley 1986, hands down, the best live show you will ever see
I remember the main headlines like Phil Collins traveling from London to Philly to perform, and Zeppelin getting back together.
Thanks captain obvious
No question. Anyone who thinks any band has had a better live performance doesn't know what they are talking about
David Gilmour is good, but Freddie will never be matched. How long will his showmanship endure.
@@superally8077 Well with the way music is today it will never be matched
I so loved seeing Fredie’s beautiful body with no tattoos. If he was around today he would have tattoos all over.
Will never get tired of watching people's first reaction to this performance, and enjoying it with them.
I have seen this performance 100 times but her reaction brought me to tears too!
RIP Freddie Mercury
You are the Greatest of all time and you will never be forgotten.
We miss you so much.
What you have just witnessed, Stacey, is the best rock and roll frontman in history. Few interesting facts about this performance:
1. Freddie performed against doctor's orders with (of all things) laryngitis
How the hell am I meant to follow that up??" 😂
This kiss bit is from the movie and is not true. Most of the movie is crapola.
I just wished they hadn’t invited DB on stage and had done Under Pressure that would have been a great hand over.
Stacy just watch Freddie v the crowd - it’s longer and funnier and ends with Typical Freddie humour . I was there for it , not for Live Aid sadly
GOAT
I thought Elton John followed this performance.
@@goldenruletv7301Nope. Bowie was next but Elton John told Freddie that that performance would never be topped..
I remember this like it was yesterday. I was 17 and watched this from the tv in my bedroom that hot Saturday in July. The BEST times!!!!!!
I am a 63 year old guy from London and have had the good fortune of seeing Queen 5 times, the best live band along with Pink Floyd ,love your reaction and how emotional it made you.x
I was at Knebworth the year after this for their last ever (not that we knew). It was my first live gig....bit spoilt really!
I'm 67 also a man from London and saw Queen live at the Rainbow theatre in the mid 70's. Till this day that concert holds a place in my heart. I took get very emotional seeing this performance.
Saw Queen in Slane in 1986 - I can still see Freddie coming on stage to One Vision. Breathtaking!
@@horace9341 Stop talking s..t, the crowd was enthralled from the moment it started.
And it was no small bands either. Some bigger than others.. but..
But was it though? I mean for that 22minutes... The world was a Queen show
Can't recall who it was now but one of the other performers said "how do we follow that !"
I think the most telling anecdote from this event would be this: David Bowie was the next artist after Queen and, when Freddy, Brian, John, and Roger returned backstage after that performance, he confronted them, saying: _You bastards! How the hell am I supposed to go on after THAT???_
Wow! 😂 I could only imagine. How do you top that. 😱🤗
Such a shame they didn’t do ‘Under Pressure ‘ together , that would have been epic
How am i supposed to go no after that 😂😂😂
Well put 👏 👌 👍
@wotspur I'm not sure if the two had collaborated before or after this Live Aid time period.
@frasermackenzie7275 Yes, they both did under pressure in 81 well before live aid.
Yes you have to watch the Green Day Concert. It’s amazing.
I think you're probably referring to the Green Day London concert?
That happened by accident, but became a feature after that.
I think they always warm up the crowd with that? In recent years anyway.
The ultimate showman that backed it up without fail every time. There will never be another, Freddie, his legacy will live on forever.
Thank you showing this and your emotional response. Now imagine being 14 years old dancing and singing in front of your television, celebrating your heroes together with 1.5 billion people around the world…. Still sends me shivers only remembering the feeling.❤
Watched it live in India on TV. Was 14 too then 😊
I was 18 and watched live in Bermuda. Was before live broadcasting was really a thing! Amazing!
"an estimated audience of 1.9 billion, in 150 nations"
if you take the population of those 150 countries you get ~1.9 billion
which implies everybody from those countries watched or listened the broadcast.
Yes I feel blessed to have lived at that time.
Rio crowds go hard. My favorite Rush live is from Rio.
Thank you
Rio crowds are nuts! They sang along with an instrumental song (YYZ) at a Rush concert.
What's wrong with the smartphones? 😮
Yep. I watched it live on the day. Greatest live performance ever.
Will never forget that 20 minutes.
amazing story - thank you for sharing. Freddie was the GOAT

@@jonny5TVWhat an arsehole comment!🙄
In an interview Freddie was asked what his favorite instrument was to play. His response was "The audience baby, the audience".
Queen stole the show. People forget it was televised to the US as well.
Queen practiced for a week in a warehouse with a timer to make sure they had the set flawless.
Most other groups just "winged it" and it shows!
And Freddy wasn't 100%, he was getting over / still sick.
And also important to add tha the crowd were doing the Radio GaGa handclaps copying the original music video sequence to it. It wasn't really spontaneous as this presenter thinks it is. But I'm nit-picking ;)
Wonderful performance, a wonderful day of music. You don't really need make-up, by the way.
@@clydebear6914 That may be so but I've been to a LOT of shows and never seen that much crowd participation at any scale.
Arguably the best 22 minutes in Rock & Roll History.

Agree 100% - Truely incredible…
The peak of Freddie and Queen. When some of us had forgotten them... Freddie grabbed us and made us see!! He was an artist and showman. Yes, and tears! Because he is gone, not forgotten!
Pink Floyd Live 8. Not saying Floyd was better. But, it was a 10 on a 10 scale as well....
I'm not arguing
The 2 billion of us who watched this live on TV pretty much agree with everything you said here. Queen stole the show with half the world's population watching.
Maybe 200 million, and Queen didn't steal the show that's Hollywood BS
Here is a link to the "Love of My Life" and "Is This the World We Created" performances:

The world ate out of Freddy's hand that day! I watched
Take care.
Almost 40 years later, so nice to see people enjoying this as I did back then. Thank you Freddy for your time here, you made people happy.
Its astonishing how relaxed and in his element he was. Biggest concert ever and he just casually plinks on his piano like hes just stopping by
A Queen performance was "a kind of magic" that was, is and will never be repeated. R.I.P. Freddie. God bless John, Brian and Roger for creating legendary music 🙏💙.
Such an iconic performance. I highly recommend U2's set from Live Aid, particularly their version of "Bad" I think Queen and U2 were the two best performances at this concert.
Several amazing things about this performance...over 72 thousand in attendance at Wembley Stadium in London, Freddie had a throat infection, and was advised to cancel, and the best part was that when Queen left the stage, the following act was David Bowie who said to Freddie, "You want me to follow THAT ?"
nobody wanted to follow that
Did Bowie really say that? Wow
