And, this number's among my MOST FAVORITE songs (Queen or any others') till date. Anyway, you guys do great job here, love it much. Advance best wishes for your son- cheers [_iiiiiiiiiiii_]
In the UK, we have an extremely popular programme called "Gogglebox". It is literally just people watching and commenting on the previous weeks telly programmes. Love your channel btw.
John Deacon wrote this as he wanted to break free from the grind of constant touring and spend more time with his family. Nothing to do with woman's lib!
Queen was defenietly embracing that side. They were an example of positive masculinity, not afraid of dressing up, being vulnerable and showing their emotions in their songs. Also they were totally fine with Freddie being bisexual, so it says a lot about them. Love the guys
Coronation street is a really popular soap that's been screened here in the UK since 1960. The characters they were (loosely) supposed to be based on were Roger - Suzy Burchell; Freddie - Bet Lynch; Brian - Hilda Ogden; John - Ena Sharples. Long time gone now but you can Google them. It is a very British thing lol
The "artsy" part is a tribute to the ballet ""The afternoon of a faun" from 1912. Freddy shaved his moustache to portray Vaslav Nijinsky the man who choreograped the original ballet and danced the lead role.
This is my first video of yours and I really appreciated the info lesson that you had at the beginning for your son and for others (like myself) who didn't know all of the behind the scenes info. Thank you and keep it up!!
Epic! I love watching your son enjoy this era of music and just getting into it and enjoying it at his age. Just proof that Queen and similar era music will never die... Hi gentlemen. So I'll take a stab at interpreting the dance section, lol. Freddie plays the role of Dionysus(Greek)/Bacchus or Liber Pater(Roman) god of wine, fertility, freedom, and ecstasy, hence the grape-eating; and is surrounded by his chorus of followers who are all celebrating and enjoying their personal freedoms as well. Very astute symbolisms to support the meaning of the song, imo. I loved it.🔥❤
Freddie identified himself with both Nijinsky and the Faun character he played. Sexual identity and gender role are key to the "I Want to Break Free" video.
Everything they did was an artistic production and really out of the box- This is one of their greatest songs not as well known because it didn't get played at the time.
The 2nd section in the dark with people wearing lights was the band showing support for the miners in the UK at the time. There was a pretty significant strike going on. Freddie loved the ballet and always wanted to try dancing in the ballet which explains the other part.
Thanks so much for not only breaking this video down for me, but letting me watch your son react to it! I always thought it was Freddy making a statement, I stand corrected. I wish my 16 year old son was as open minded as your son is! I tried to share the genius that is Queen and he has no clue!!

This 1984 video is based on Coronation Street - a (once) very popular British soap opera. It was filmed during a time of UK strife with the miner's strike. Hence the surreal influence of the miner torch light scene
glad you watched the full album version with the extended middle, but explaining the video, its a parody of coronation street, a British show thats still on today
A little background on the odd scenes with Freddie and a the group of people; that scene was from a ballet that he was part of. He learned ballet in 6 weeks I think it was, and that was the end result. It was also used a bit in the "No One But You (Only The Good Die Young)" Official Video.
Loved the vid guys. Don’t know if you know but the part in the middle where Freddie is with the dancers, Freddie wanted to include something with interpretive dance/ballet as he loved the ballet and also opera. That’s why he did the collaboration with Montserrat caballé (Barcelona)
Written by John Deacon and at the suggestion of Roger Taylor and his girlfriend at the time they did it in drag. Freddie wanted to shave his mustache but they told him not to do it. This is a funny video and a great song.♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Love this song! Great reaction. If you haven't heard it, or it's been a long time since hearing, you MUST do The Prophet's Song by Queen. It's a perfect example of how progressive and heavy Queen could get in their heyday. It's off of A Night At The Opera (same album as Bohemian Rhapsody) - an absolute EPIC track!!
Another great band from the 70's was Grand Funk Railroad..my favorite song from them is "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home....awesome song.Definitely worth checking out!!
You are absolutely correct about the beginning scenes being about the nighttime soap opera. When Freddie is shirtless, he and the rest of Queen are in the mines. Back then, miners were on strike and were being treated poorly. Personally I think the ballet part, (when Freddie Did shave his mustache), was the real Freddie breaking free. He loved opera and the ballet. He even performed with the Royal Ballet for a Charity event.
To put them dressing in "drag" into context, in the United Kingdom, we have a long history of men dressing up as women, the most common being the Pantomime Dame which is always a man dressed as a women ie Widow Twankey, by contrast the Prince in the Pantomime was usually a woman. It really isn't an issue over here. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantomime
The times might have come forward but the attitudes haven't. You don't have to scratch that much to be surprised what there is to be found still. There's lot of surrealism ala Federico Fellini in that video as well. "Another One Bites The Dust" certainly restrored the band's popularity.
Another one bites the dust was years before I want to break free. This song and the band pretty much ended Queen In the USA. Freddie Mercury never came back to the US to tour.
Lemmy Mace Hot space in 1982 was the worst selling album they had but I still liked at least four songs off of the album. They made an album and their rock part followers hated it. Roger and Brian we’re not even thrilled about this album.Fred and John were OK with it but not the other two. Roger said that Paul Prenter had a lot to do with Freddy wanting to do this album and Roger said that he didn’t want to do anything that sounded just like he walked into a gay club. I didn’t see any problem with it but some people that did like the harder rock part of queen didn’t pair for that Album and the sales were much lower than the other albums they ever put out. That album had “ under pressure” & “ back chat”& body language on it. The body language song was good but I didn’t care much for the video.
Fun fact, for Freddie's video The Great Pretender , David Mallet the director, faithfully recreated this video and various others, really in great detail.
