It was drummer Roger Taylor's girlfriend's idea to dress in drag. Bass guitar player John Deacon was the frumpy granny in the dark coat and hat, guitarist Brian May was wearing the curlers, pink satin and lace nighty and bunny slippers (possibly as the spinster or widow Auntie). The guys all had a blast dressing in drag, they thought it was hilarious. Infamously, the stuffed shirts at MTV didn't get the joke behind the cross-dressing part of the video and banned it. The ballet section actually featured Freddie with members of the royal ballet, of which Freddie was a huge fan. Also, in case your wondering, the device in the opening sequence was a tea-maid. Its a combination kettle and alarm clock. Its supposed to boil water or make tea when the alarm goes off, but was reputedly unstable.
Yeah, in the UK, we laughed our socks off at this video - whilst the US went round clutching their pearls. Freddie was all ready to shave his moustache off, but they convinced him to leave it on as it was funnier. We have a long tradition of drag in this country - see Pantomime Dames. That is also The Royal Ballet company you're seeing. Just think of it as art :-D
This is one of the best and funniest comments I've ever seen on a reaction!! So true about US vs UK sensibilities; even in 2020 I think. (I'm from Australia).
“The video spoofs the ITV soap opera Coronation Street, as proposed by Roger Taylor: ‘We had done some really serious, epic videos in the past, and we just thought we'd have some fun. We wanted people to know that we didn't take ourselves too seriously, that we could still laugh at ourselves. I think we proved that.’” According to Rolling Stone, the video for “I Want to Break Free” is a parody of the British soap opera Coronation Street. It features members of the band in drag in a way which hearkens back to Bugs Bunny and the early days of drag comedy. Brits got the joke, however, others were incensed by the video. Loudersound says MTV banned the video in North America.

Making a statement of encouragement;- *NEVER, EVER feel ashamed of who you are! *Embrace, AND love who you are, regardless of one's ;- *gender | *sexuality | *race ******Freddie was aiming for human rights within the LGBT (as we know it today) community And, with great passion, for the sake of future generations! ******* ..... BY LETS SAY SOME UNIQUE VIDEOS THIS WEEK!!! 🥰 LOVE IT❤️🎶🦋
1:33 Well worth the price of admission for that reaction.
Oh yeah, what an amazing song! Queen comes on, even the kids recognise greatness & stop messing around to listen, dance & sing. To this day when I vacuum (daily) "I Want To Break Free" appears at some point lol. That frigging solo! 🤯 ✌🏻
You feel him my friend LMFAO LMFAO
This is the first time I’ve seen this video. I know the song. Unusual!
@1:48 Looking at your smoke haha "Hold up wait! " HAHA DEAD!!!! 💀💀💀💀💀
I've never seen this video. Mr Videos reaction to Freddy's has been cracking up. Thank you Mr. Video, I really needed a deep belly laugh today.
This cubicle life is 🤯🤯😰😰🤬🤬
Freddie Mercury is the greatest singer of all time
I absolutely loved your reaction!!!! 😆😍👍 xxxx
Freddie is making a statement, a voice regards to sexuality....
Freddie Mercury took a very brave, and respectful stance for those who are struggling with their sexuality back in the late 1980's.
Freddie had a goal..... aiming to help all (with an indirect approach via his music) that no matter your circumstances, you are not alone. Making a statement of encouragement;-
*NEVER, EVER feel ashamed of who you are!
*Embrace, AND love who you are, regardless of one's ;- *gender | *sexuality | *race
******Freddie was aiming for human rights within the LGBT (as we know it today) community
And, with great passion, for the sake of future generations! *******
..... AFTER ALL, GOD HAS CREATED YOU.
NONE OF US ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DNA / CHROMOSOME THAT WE ARE ALL BORN, AND GIFTED WITH 💕 XXX
AMEN !
Exceptionally blessed for our legend, Freddie Mercury, who is so very missed over in the UK xxxx
Clare 🏴 (UK, South Yorkshire) 👍
Freddy was bisexual. alot of people didn't know that. this song about him being himself with no apologizes of who he was! and his friends and bandmates showing they got his back always!
@Durian Durian he was married to a woman. she knew his was bisexual and they were best friends and stayed friends after they got divorced!
The song was written by John deacon and Brian may suggested the video
The song is about women’s rights...
@@iemand2612 when i was younger i heard that the song was about Freddy but thats awesome!
@@augie2258 the *video* was a spoof, in those days the video didn´t necessarily have to do anything with the lyrics, they were just playing around. The *song* is an empowerment song, the lyrics are clear, pro-feminist, pro-LGBTQ, interpret it any way .
It's not the smoke! Laughing out loud! The one in the short skirt is Roger. A parody of a British soap opera. All in fun.
Freddie is a genius my friend
I just recently found your page on UA-cam and you're genuinely amazing to watch. Your reactions are absolutely hilarious and real. Freddie was a musical Genius. He was also an opera singer. He was gay and amazing. A true showman. You should watch the movie about him called bohemian rhapsody. It is beyond amazing. I think you'll really like it....👏👏👏👏
Growing up in SA it's especially fun just seeing black people react to white thing💤💛
Does no one comments how he looked when he first saw the ''girls'' - looking at his joint like '' how much did I smoke?? '' hahahaha
I have been waiting for your reaction to this music video. 😂😂😂
Someone to Love, live version, Montreal 1981, HD quality. The best, to my mind. Also. Love of My Life from a concert. Under Pressure without Davie Bowie who screws it up, imo. Don't Stop Me Now....different but excellent...recorded version. One Vision, documentary moves into the performance at Wembley, I think. Who Wants to Live Forever...version with Brian singing as well, Video. More when I think harder!
