With the timing chain there is an oil way thats near it that sprays they chain they are known for getting blocked if oil is changed often enough so the clean oil ends up pushing through the debris rather than being blocked by it
Enjoying this series on the Astra 👍 Liked that you didn’t edit out the forgot tools part, it’s the sort of thing a regular person could do, the fact that you’re sharing any mistakes you make in this series quite refreshing for a UA-camr 👍
With the timing chain there is an oil way thats near it that sprays they chain they are known for getting blocked if oil is changed often enough so the clean oil ends up pushing through the debris rather than being blocked by it
Just some tips for diagnosis: Check the compression to see if there is any cracks in the block that could be causing oil and water to mix. If your rad has one check the cap to see if there is any gunk on there. Check the coolant temps when driving to see if they are higher than usual. When you go on your drive, make sure it's a long one and you give it some just to get the heat up a bit and check the following: Is there any oil leaking into the intake manifold (Possible PCV failure causing your gunk if so) Have the oil and coolant levels dropped at all? (If there is oil leaking out the crankcase again it's a symptom of a blocked/failed PCV) (If more coolant has gone down than oil, that is more than likely a head gasket issue) Do you get adequate heat out of the heaters? (if not a symptom of a bad head gasket) When the vehicle is up to temp do you notice any blue smoke out of the rear of the vehicle (If so a symptom of a bad head gasket) When the vehicle is up to temp do you notice any white smoke out the rear of the vehicle (If so could be a PCV valve issue again causing excess oil into the intake) Do you notice a lack of power (Another sign of PCV if oil in the intake, but also a symptom of a head gasket or cracked block) Is there any misfires when driving (Another sign of a Head gasket issue or PCV problems) Once you are back from the drive see if you notice any bubbling in the expansion tank before you turn the vehicle off (Another sign of a head gasket issue) Does the gunk disappear when you've been on a couple long drives? (Sign of it just being condensation, which is alot worse in this weather too) There is alot of things to do when diagnosing somthing like this but these should hopefully give you a better idea of whats going on, best of luck!
White slude is common on the filler cap in the winter. Take it for a good run get it hot. Also the water pump seal can leak into the timing chain cover and you will get the same symptoms. If it was the headgasket the oil coming out would have white sludge in it. Defo needs a timing chain kit
Jesse, have you ever thought of getting an old Corsa C and trying to get a Saab engine and do a sleeper build or anything like that? Could be a good watch to see you swap and engine and Corsa C would be best car to practice on as they are easy ISH to swap.
Sounds like a stretched chain tbf. Head gasket you’d have the gunk all over the cams. I’ve also found that the chain tensioners fail. Could be worth throwing a tensioner on it
the oil leak is the front oil sensor in the front left of the engine. The 1.4 has a chain and has a gasket behind the chain if this leaks the coolent and oil will mix giving you the mayo your seeing.
My 1.4 astra looked exactly like that white sluge ended up been a blocked breather pipe , and I had a rattle like that ended up been my timing chain hitting the side cover have pictures off it still it eating some of the timing cover away haha
Timeing chain and timeing chain cover gasket get a timeing chain kit and timeing tool locking tool set you will need it to lock the crank and set the cam sensor paul from Derbyshire
Everyone keeps saying timing chain, but its more likely the chain tensioner rather then the chain itself, im pretty sure the tensioner works off oil pressure too, would still fit full kit on though plus new water pump. The sludge could be blocked crankcase breather/pcv.
Mayo build up in vauxhall rockers are common ad the breather into the inlet manifold gets blocked. Take the small breather pupe off and blow towards the inlet you may find it blocked. Hand behind throttle and pull pipe off push a small spike into hole approx 1 mm thick. This will clear the hole and allow the moisture to be pulled out of the head and get rid of most of the mayo
First thing when checking head gasket is dip the oil see if theirs water contamination also the tool you used confirmed the head gasket was ok (they work) the fuel trims will be all over the place after oxygen sensor was reading faulty but a visual inspection was needed on the old one to check crud build up and condition it also looked like too much oil on the dipstick and is probably getting past the rings it looks like it’s got a fine mist of oil all over it,I’d recommend a different engine but low mileage if possible otherwise it’ll have the same problems,is it worth it no 😂 change oil clean engine MOT it and then sell it as a runabout, having said that I’ve subscribed your vids are entertaining I’m waiting for the next one cheers
Looks like the breathers are blocked in the rocker cover itself. Had a few like that because of it. Take the rocker cover off and give it a good clean with brake cleaner to stop the mayo. Also the breather pipes.
Run the car up fill the coolant header tank and Rev it and see if it foams or is blowing foam into it my brothers vectra did the same and it was the head gasket get like you the oil was spotless
Sounds and looks like the timing chain does need doing but the head gaskets looks fine that oil sensor on the front left is leaking from the looks of the video Which is why you got that smoke coming out the bay if there was that mayo on the dipstick then yes I would say it’s the head gasket but looks fine when you checked that on these engines you do get a touch of that mayo stuff on the cap when the cars not used a hole lot
I love you you said Vauxhalls are easy to work on, not the astra H though some bits are easy I had the 2litre sri petrol steering rack was buggered but had to drop the whole subframe to do replace the rack it took 3 days cause of the weather stubborn bolts haha I wish you good luck on the astra Jessi I had no luck with mine was a pain in the backside 😅
Condensation for the sludge.needs long run outs...timing chain kit and the oil switch needs sorting..cam sensors are also a common issue with these sooner or later.
I don't think that's head gasket, the chain definitely looks slack.. that wants doing. You could always just put a tensioner on the old chain, and see how much it improves - but I'd probably just do the whole thing, the chain will have stretched slightly if that loose.
Replace that timing chain, tensioner and guides. I doubt its the head gasket. I got hold of a car that sat for 3 years, had the gunk on the filler cap from condensation in the sump. Did an oil change and went for a 40 mile trip, gunk was on the cap but after cleaning that off, its never happened again. Just gotta give the engine a good half hour when its up to temp to dry the insides out.
had exactly the same shape astra but make sure these are parked in gear the handbrakes have a tendancy to slacken off when applied so they roll away, had this happen to me cost me £2k to repair it and get it back on the road
It's a shame you didn't get this car six months ago, I had a 1.4 sxi with full xp body kit, irmscher spoiler etc etc on it, I'd have happily donated the car because one of my boys lost the keys and couldn't be bothered to pay for it to go back in the road
Try to change the cap from the expansion tank with a new one and then drive the car for 10 minutes and if the engine does not go crazy and after checking the dipstick if that foam does not appear, then the cylinder head gasket is not really burnt. The timing kit should be exchanged with the accessory belt too.
I wouldn’t of wasted my time doing the oil mate if you end up doing chain you will have wasted the oil as when u pull the timing cover usually coolant drops in the sump
Can’t wait for the third video on this Astra. I’ve got an Astra 1.7 diesel with 65,000 mile on it 05 plate hoping after you fixed the Astra it can get 200 K keep up the good work lad 🤜
Your timing has jumped, causing the engine management light & misfire sound. With that much slack on the chain I’d deffo say it’s jumped. I’d Get timing sorted & get a new chain done and hope it hasn’t damaged anything internally.
These suffer with oil starvation to the lifters/tappits My wife’s vectra Sri use rattle on and off for few years but it was literally for a couple seconds. Car never let her down in 10 years of owning it tho
It’s not head gasket they all have condensation in the head i wouldn’t worry but it defo needs a timing chain 100% and id do a water pump and thermostat and a coolant flush
Hi Jessie just to let you no the oil leak on the astra could be coming from the oil cooler behind the manifold. Which happened on my Astra common fault after 100 thousand miles ok best of luck
Just watched but I assume by now you know that chains goosed, had less play on my vectra vxr and it skipped teeth and bounced things that shouldn't bounce
I had one of these a 59 plate from new. Was a great car til 75k then crapped its gearbox. 800 quid for replacement box, new clutch and labour....got rid after that.
Hi mate i would do the timing chain and head gasket with the chain you have to take off the sump so if it looks like its leaking it will be done for peace of mind. If you need any help shoot us a message 👍
The chain is a bit loose on that, the rattling is due to the hydraulic tensioner failing. Engine will be scrap if the chain snaps but with that said mines been rattling for over 20k miles and still goes. It’s the risk you take I suppose

The chain needs changing its definitely stretched
The engine light is on because you need to refresh the fault codes on the diagnostic tool
Any plans for your dad to be in future videos? The banter between you two was class 😂
I work for Vauxhall and that timing chain Is knackered, you need a complete kit and the cam locking kit
Enjoying this series on the Astra 👍

I second this ^
Love your enthusiasm and energy for every car and project be interesting to see how things with this project
Could also be the side cover gasket mate. I had the same issue on a corsa with same engine. Wasn’t the head!
Always been a fan of the shape of the 3 door astra h. One of Vauxhalls best looking cars ever imo.
That timing chain 100% needs changing bud.
Cambelt water pump had the same issues about a month ago on one of these
Cam belt on this?
I have the same SGS engineering jack, got it for my birthday off the misses. Lovely bit of kit at a reasonable price too 👌
The timing chain is 100% gone it will be stretched
100% chain
And the timing chain cover gasket can leak oil into water and the other way round (probably needs a waterpump aswell)
White slude is common on the filler cap in the winter. Take it for a good run get it hot. Also the water pump seal can leak into the timing chain cover and you will get the same symptoms. If it was the headgasket the oil coming out would have white sludge in it. Defo needs a timing chain kit
Definitely needs chain doing, the timing chain cover gasket can fail where the water pump goes through causing mayo on oil cap and rocker cover.
really really loving this series, keep it up. Also love how positive you are despite the obstacles
glad you enjoy man!
Got a full z20let conversion package for a corsa c if interested in Surrey , sure you could get it in the Astra though
Jesse, have you ever thought of getting an old Corsa C and trying to get a Saab engine and do a sleeper build or anything like that? Could be a good watch to see you swap and engine and Corsa C would be best car to practice on as they are easy ISH to swap.

I've had alot of astras and still own a 1.4 sri 3door as well it definitely needs a chain kit with a new gasket and also a water pump as well
Everyone keeps saying timing chain, but its more likely the chain tensioner rather then the chain itself, im pretty sure the tensioner works off oil pressure too, would still fit full kit on though plus new water pump.

Rip Albert loomes many good memories there. Is there any alternative self pick scrapyard nearby?

Awesome Astra love it 😊😊😊
Looks like the breathers are blocked in the rocker cover itself. Had a few like that because of it. Take the rocker cover off and give it a good clean with brake cleaner to stop the mayo. Also the breather pipes.
Happy new year Jesse and let's make 2024 a fantastic year and lots of fun builds! Keep up the work and you'll make it💪🏻
Engine idling will still do the same as short journeys, nowhere near getting near to running temperature and under no load, give it a good run 👍
Run the car up fill the coolant header tank and Rev it and see if it foams or is blowing foam into it my brothers vectra did the same and it was the head gasket get like you the oil was spotless

Change rocker cover gasket be just condensation with not getting used for oil cap there cheap as chips to fix
The timing chain is knackered pal
Rocker gasket if it was leaking will make it louder as when it's building up pressure it's leaking out the gasket pushing oil
Great Video Happy new Year mate
Head gasket 100% had the same issue on my 206 gti180

The emulsification is probably from the timing chest cover gasket to the water pump.
had exactly the same shape astra but make sure these are parked in gear the handbrakes have a tendancy to slacken off when applied so they roll away, had this happen to me cost me £2k to repair it and get it back on the road
Jessie the rocker chain needs replacing because your chain is due to snap so you need to purchase a new rocker chain
How can it be head gasket if the coolant level doesn’t drop?
Yea sure either coolant would be getting burnt off, or oil entering the coolant channel or coolant entering the oil
New subscriber from Calvin car dairy loving the first video on the Astra
Hi mate we at looms we found a towing eye cover that will fit the astra
Definitely the timing chain that needs doing and it will sound much better after
you know its going to be a good day when you see jesse upload a new video
Great video Jesse ,been liking these videos recently 👍
Happy new year lad can’t wait to see what you have in store for us in 2024 🍻😁
i am so excited, owning a 1.4 corsa c currently n if it ever breaks i literally want an astra
Timing chain is stretched, if its jumped the timing will be off causing the misfires. Had this on an Audi recently
Have you tried a compression test? good for content, learning, and an investment in a tool you can use on every car
All the best to you an the missus for the new year fella you might have your work cut out for you on this one chap
the chain will tighten a bit when torque is applied but id say no good
Chains deffo knackered. What scrap yard is that. I thought it was mallys in Haydock for a minute but its not is it
It's a shame you didn't get this car six months ago, I had a 1.4 sxi with full xp body kit, irmscher spoiler etc etc on it, I'd have happily donated the car because one of my boys lost the keys and couldn't be bothered to pay for it to go back in the road

The timing kit should be exchanged with the accessory belt too.
Good old albert looms, please tell me you got the rear boot latch why you was there jesse
Forgot 🤣 ram out of time
Great video snap I got a sgs tj3x for Christmas has well
I wouldn’t of wasted my time doing the oil mate if you end up doing chain you will have wasted the oil as when u pull the timing cover usually coolant drops in the sump
Try megavaux in stapleford if you need any spares.
Can’t wait for the third video on this Astra. I’ve got an Astra 1.7 diesel with 65,000 mile on it 05 plate hoping after you fixed the Astra it can get 200 K keep up the good work lad 🤜
You’ve bought the proper engine Isuzu 💪🏻
For the filter housing you could use a oil filter strap
Love the content mate 👍
Definitely a stretched chain they are renowned for it too
Another Great Vlogs ever 👌
Your timing has jumped, causing the engine management light & misfire sound. With that much slack on the chain I’d deffo say it’s jumped.
I’d Get timing sorted & get a new chain done and hope it hasn’t damaged anything internally.
Told you on the last video pal. That noise was lean knock. The car was running lean. Probably due to the faulty o2 sensor or plug.
Is the car losing water when u drive it because that is another way to tel if the head gasket gone
I'd say the mayo is from the engine cleaner. I hope you can get the filter housing soon!
Love the video mate 💪🏽 I’m planning on buying an Astra this month and hopefully completely transform it
deffo needs a chain mate, that is well slack.
Jesus that car ride blew my speakers up.
been waiting for ageees for this
I would get a proper headgasket tester those 1400s are bad for chains and worn chain guides 👍
That will be a easy fix just a oil change and new o2 sensor should do it but the chain is stretched but it should still run much better
100% timing chain jese mate will be sweet after and still make tidy profit on it
Waiting to see how it turns out, love it forgot the tools, 😂🤣👍
Loving the videos . Keep em coming . Also that timing chain has been a timing chain for to long . Needs replacing ASAP....
These suffer with oil starvation to the lifters/tappits My wife’s vectra Sri use rattle on and off for few years but it was literally for a couple seconds. Car never let her down in 10 years of owning it tho
Timing chain , tensioner and guides need replacing. Boot fault will be the switch in the strip on the outside of the boot . Micra switches goes faulty
Put a few washers under there Tensioner/ Guide to make the chain tight just to rule it out then uno if u got spend the money doing it
It’s not head gasket they all have condensation in the head i wouldn’t worry but it defo needs a timing chain 100% and id do a water pump and thermostat and a coolant flush
Hi Jessie just to let you no the oil leak on the astra could be coming from the oil cooler behind the manifold. Which happened on my Astra common fault after 100 thousand miles ok best of luck
could be that the coolant has to much water in it and it splitting and causing the mayo could explain the smoke as well
Just watched but I assume by now you know that chains goosed, had less play on my vectra vxr and it skipped teeth and bounced things that shouldn't bounce
Where’s your air filter did not see one in your box
Condensation build up it needs to go a on long run idling won’t be doing it any good
Just put the old oil filter housing back on hand tight it will be cush
That chain is done, I’ve replaced chains with less slack than that
Well now you need to buy a 1.2 so you have something to put the housing onto 😂
Thought the thumbnail was Mat Armstrong 😂
I used ai 😅
My favorite place Albert Looms :D
I had one of these a 59 plate from new. Was a great car til 75k then crapped its gearbox. 800 quid for replacement box, new clutch and labour....got rid after that.
Hi mate i would do the timing chain and head gasket with the chain you have to take off the sump so if it looks like its leaking it will be done for peace of mind. If you need any help shoot us a message 👍
Legend cheers man!
Do timing chain and head gasket good content and you get too learn something on a cheap engine
The chain is a bit loose on that, the rattling is due to the hydraulic tensioner failing. Engine will be scrap if the chain snaps but with that said mines been rattling for over 20k miles and still goes. It’s the risk you take I suppose
Still sounds rough to me bro.. that chain definitely still rattling.. get it changed and ur definitely onto a winner 👌👍🏻👊🏻
whats that you are a vegan!!! YES i am!! thats brill news im gunner get some on order thanks Jesse!
