‘Par is a social construct’ 😂
Just played a round by myself yesterday with nobody behind me so had plenty of time to think about each hole influenced a lot by your videos. I ditched driver and 3 wood and used only irons for the entire round and shot a 83 as a 19 handicap. Best round ever so far.
How many of your friends didn’t believe you
What a round!
Your playing partner really helped here I'd say, he was very supportive & encouraging.
It's good playing with guys like that, especially when you don't know the course & they do.
I wonder how he scored?
Fantastic round mate, well played!!

“Big Richard energy tees” 😂
Hey Matt I really enjoy watching your vids. How about some "behind the scenes" footage, like the club houses of these courses, what they look like and what you have at the halfway house and the accommodation you stay at when you travel to play these courses. That could also be kinda fun to see, either as part of your golf footage video or as an extra separate video about the trip. Thanks my friend.🙏
That would be fun and cool indeed. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
I'm not so sure. Rumours are it was necessary to completely rebuild two of the last three clubhouses after Matt's visits and the third can't get rid of the lizard infestation. Maybe "behind the scenes" is best left well alone.
@@andrewcarter7503word has it that his superfluous stupendously superficial use of super protein rich beef has indeed damaged some plumbing at his home course.
Matt when you're swinging easy its some of the best golf I've seen on the Tube!
I've played Carnastie and its a beast but you made it look simple. You have some skills as its a proper Open Champ course. The weather was very kind but cant take that away from you. 👏
I played the course in April of 2023 and I had a great experience. The staff and caddies were awesome, making the round more enjoyable. Get their soup at the halfway stop, because it's very good.
I am fascinated by your golf psychology. I have a par 4 on my home course which I just can't reach, so I consciously play it as a par 5 and that always makes me feel better about it. (I have a 13 handicap. I think of bogey golf as "par" and then try to beat it. But this year I also shot a 98. LOL) I see you applying psychology that to multiple holes and I realize I have to do the same thing. Also you are a great putter from 5 feet which really helped your score as demonstrated in this round. I am now definitely going to focus on improving my 5 footers.
If you can make 5 footers then you can also chip. If you can then chip, you can pitch. If you can pitch then you can hit a great iron shot
carnoustie is probably my favourite of the open rota courses, played it three times and in the wind it is brutal! but its such a great layout, maybe not as scenic as troon or turnberry, but a better course in my opinion. thats a great score mat.
Best course i played
Matt, your ball striking in this video is phenomenal! Great direction control. Keep this up and scratch looks eminently possible. Great job!
What a course. Amazing to see the greens roll so pure. Fun reminder of the GS way ahead of the round this weekend.
Your putting is unreal. PGA tour quality no joke.
its a lot easier to putt on pure greens
just listen to BOB ROTELLA PUTTING OUT OF YOUR MIND all the time on audible
You will putt better
I love how you are getting to go through the golf courses in Scotland. Its seems like quite the dream. To work and play golf throughout Scotland. I hope I can do this someday too. Good job again!
Loving the Scottish series Matt. Your playing partner was v supportive in this one and definitely helped.
Wow ... this is slowly becoming more steady and with a lot of wisdom. I think to reset my first guesses of three point nine to a lower one ... as you deserve that for sure. This way of playing will get you low I think. Putter was on fire ... lot's of longer-ish puts and awesome chips. Shortgame burning hot too. Ehhh new guess: Hcp 2.3 ... and hope you manage even lower. Way to go sir, awesome. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Yes sir…some of the best shots I’ve seen the playa make in forever. Much different than Thai golf. Good stuff…🏌🏿♂️⛳️😎🇺🇸👍
Well played mate. As a former member of a golf club in Troon (not that one), I know just how tough links golf can be in Scotland. You kept the heid, which is the main thing.
Sam King seems like a top bloke. Proper chilled out playa 🙌🙌🙌
When you can hear the birds singing at Carnoustie, you know it’s going to be an enjoyable round 👍🏌️♂️🔥
Great ending to a long day for me. Had a 45 minute frost delay the had a golf lesson that is the beginning of a journey to get rid of my over the top swing. The realization of how hard it’s going to be just sunk in. So seeing you play so well and so smart was a really good ending. I think I finally found a reacher than can guide me through the process.
Just tilt your shoulders a little bit to the right.
Cracking good round, mate! Love some of your exclamations which I'd like to use in the future such as "get up there you bastard!"
You better fly you bastard
How nice to be playing all these courses and I see you are really getting used to them since you are so used to our Asian courses. I would assume your handicap will be around 1.2 by the end of the trip. Good luck Matty
Love hearing comments from playing partners
That hooked shot out of the deep and nasty to birdie was so sick!
Great Round
Keep the videos coming, they are very helpful and entertaining
Some great par saves… living the dream!
Wild that you played hogans heroes with no wind. that course is insane w/winds. clubhouse is likea hospital unfortunately.
Perfect explanation of clubhouse
Great round mate! Fantastic company and I think we both learned a lot! 😂
This English links content is superb, Matty. My 4.7 handicap estimation is totally boned at this point so no free waddaplaya gear for this playa. But love to see the big Richard energy as of late. Cheers.
You were really hitting the piss outta your long irons. Been great to watch you improve on this journey, thanks for sharing with us playa
Surely improved throughout your Scottish stay, well done ! I would say that scratch will end-up easy, i would say 0.8 at the end of the rounds !
I’ve binged watched all your videos and yes u are a genius. U play golf your way the way an amateur should. I’ve been guilty of getting a boomstick out and thinking I’m tiger palmer. I’m actually going to play like this this year and see what it brings. U are a phenomenal golfer. I salute u. Should work as I am good with my irons. Take humble pie and 4/2 iron of the tee. 👍🏻
You are the genius in chief
@@GolfSidekick do u have any recommendations on a 1 iron? Been looking but can’t really find any.
Nah playa. They’re not great. I’d stick with a 2 iron
@@GolfSidekick will do. Cheers for the advice mucker.
WaddaRound! It goes to show you that a good course strategy beats bombing the ball. I don’t think the video can show just how hard the course is and how well you played it.
Great video … again. Love the strategy chatter! Predicting a 0.4 HCP after 20. Good luck!
Played 36 holes there in the 1990's from the championship tees. Shot 76/76 didn't actually have a handicap at the time as I was just playing casually. Loved the course although my favourite Open venue is still Royal St Georges. 😅
cracked me up talking about the magnets at the spectacle bunkers... :-)
Bro your putter is on fire. Wish I could put half as good.
Great round of golf. Your handicap will all come down to if the wind gets up and it pees it down with rain.
12:42.
That is a wild golf shot. Well done.
Wild man
Playing today for the first time in a month, and I can't tell you how stoked I am after watching this.
Also, that little comment about not warming up...I feel that. I'm kinda divided, though. I feel like if I hit 10 balls before the round I'm better than if I hit 20 or 30, because I start getting into that mentality (i.e. I'm hitting a fade today).
Granted I usually am carrying my bag from the car to the first tee and squaring up with my playing partner for the green fee he just paid for me.
5-10 balls all good
one whole bucket and i am screwed
We had similar rounds except I could not lag putt those greens. We don’t have 20 to 30 yard putts very often in the USA. but we had the same strategy. Avoid bunkers at all cost. Out of 131 bunkers I only went into two.
You make golf enjoyable Matt. I think 1.7 is your handicap after 20 rounds
Living the dream!! Enjoy! 🎉🎉🎉
Hey Matt where is a good place to play in Thailand I have no clubs with me !
Anywhere
Your putting is so damn good. I'm also around a scratch but I get off the tee super well. I have a very dependable big power fade that can go around 290 and if a tee doesn't suit my eye I can bang a hard 2 hybrid 260ish down the middle. I get plenty of GIR but man is 1-putting a super rare thing for me and getting up and down is no where near as consistent. I wish I had your putting skills on the green.
Bob Rotella
Putting out of your mind
Listen to it on audibles 8 times in a row
This was such a pleasure to watch 🎉
really enjoying these videos, Matt!
Your vid’s are awesome . Watching all the time
My new Mantra.."No hooky hooky, out of boundsky" 😂😂
0.4 HCP guess. Love your content bro almost as much as I love my new oil can finish Birddog putter!
Great round Matty, love your calm approach and when the birdie music kicks in. Well on your way to your goal.
Jean van de Velde 😭😭😭
One of the most gut-wrenching thing I have watched in sports history!
I still think my original guess of 1.1 is gonna hold up! I knew I’d at least be close. You’re killing Playa
The iron swing is fire! HCP 1.3
I hope you have a round on the old course sorted through these videos. I will go with a 2.7 index after 20 rounds
"I'm scared of these bunkers like I was scared of my exes jabba the Hutt mother"
Golf sidekick ~ 2023
Your short game is 🔥
Man I love golf in Scotland. Wish I didn’t live on the other side of the world. I’d be there all the time
I reckon 1.3 at the end. Great videos
Great video as always!
No driver, well played old boy. Respect
How are you liking the Zip cart? My bud has one and he loves it.
+1.3 hcp...? I think that was my earlier guess in a previous video comment. Looks like youre going to do it ❤🎉😮😊
Consistency is key
Magnet joke got me good haha
Great videos I love your attitude about golf and making it fun. I will guess your handicap will be 2.1
When you play forward water is still wet, rough is still deep, up the face of a bunker still sucks balls and the hole remains the same size. Bloody good round Playa. I could of used some words in my ear today as we played behind an 8 ball. Yes. A friggin 8 ball! I now have corns on my butt from sitting in a cart for hours.
Low under the wind shots to maximise roll outs ... that's links golf right there
Played 4 over par there from the whites. Nice course with lot of history. Please stray out the rough with your trolley. Respect the etiquette. I enjoy your rounds playing golf.
Still believe you’ve got this Matt. 0.00 for me 🙂
Believer
Like your shoes. Did you perhaps get them at Decathlon? Or what are they?
10:59 bro! Nice par
Getting closer and closer to scratch 🎉
Love the fact the driver stayed at home
I also play from the grandpa tees. Hoping to break 90 soon!
I think we all need to take a moment to rewatch the first shot with a putter on hole 14. There has to be a bit of magic in that birddog putter, i mean the ball was above your waist.... just making contact was a miracle.
Absurd to have a hole with different par ratings from different tee boxes unless the yardage difference is huge, like 100 yards different. The whole point of a tee box being further back is that the players choosing those boxes hit the ball farther. One would expect a course like Carnoustie to have a better understanding.
Great video. Now here is my guess about the handicap. 0.7. Keep at it Matty boy!
Great round! With this new data, I'm guessing HCP 1.6
Wow you were striking it well on this course. A few more things go your way and you're under par here.
Love the videos just need to actually remember the mindset when I get out there. I think you handicap will be a 0.8
Great round. 3.1 handicap
You make it look easy, but I'm guessing 4.2 index, which would be a dream come true for me
Well done PIC. When in Zenland
Baus, I’d have to say that you’ll have a 0.9 handicap by the end of these 20 rounds. Looking sweet🤙 teach them a lesson🏌🏻♂️
Playing from the front tees is *shorter,* not easier.
Sometimes you remove some risky tee shots, but now you're avoiding different hazards that wouldn't be in play.
I am still sticking to the 2.2 I predicted earlier. Not because of your skills or sexy swagger but because these courses are just angry nasty lovely.
Effordless Golf. Scary good.
I live for the birdie music
Surprised to you use a rangefinder, you're an accomplished golfer and you should have no need plus without that when you've a great shot,it's so much more satisfying. Well played.
A par 70 rated at 73.6/135 is a beast. To translate: A 10.0 handicapper on a good day (playing to handicap potential) would likely shoot +16.
Explanation:
Course is rated at +4
Player course handicap is +12 (135/113 X 10)
4 + 12 is +16.
Even a scratch golfer on a good day would shoot +4. (That is the definition of course rating)
I played here once. IT was the round that my game just left me as if I've never hit a ball before.. 😪
Great round! 0.8
@GolfSidekick - is that a Vice Glove and ball I see you are using there?
Yas
Enjoying this series!! 0.7 my guess
what brand shoes, bruh? like them. any chance coming to san Francisco? free room and board and green fees!
Those darn magnets!!!!
1.9
Looks like you had an excellent weather day there!! And you played your round really smart and it payed off!!🏌♂⛳
I'ts my first comment on your vids but I've been here for a while.
I truly wish I could be half as good as you, but scratch is a tall ask for most of us.
That said... you'll get 0.4 at the end of the trip!
Wadda first!!
I am not sure what the 135 means, but the 73.6 is meant to say that if a scratch golfer played from those tees 50 times, their 25 best scores would average to 73.6. So their average would be almost 4 over par, which means its a tough course
Let me know the rationale behind 25/50 being 73.6
I have not heard that before
@@GolfSidekick the idea is that its supposed to be the best 25 scores for a scratch golfer out of 50 total rounds. I don't think its fully accurate but its measured by people who measure golf courses. That score is how well you can tell the difficulty of a course. The idea is that a scratch golfer should shoot par, so if a scratch golfer should shoot 3 over par, then the course is that much harder
