I love Matt because he is one of the few people who have finally repeated what I have been saying for 30 years. Practice your short game! It’s not just because of the fewer shots around the green. It is because if you know you can get up and down around the green, it takes pressure off your approach shots…if pressure is taken off your approach shots, you have less pressure on the tee. Playing with less pressure makes you play a LOT better. I know Matty has said this a lot, but I tell beginners constantly to go and just chip and pitch and putt instead of going to the range. Unfortunately, they never listen because it is not “sexy” and because they think they will just get good at short game with no other benefits… They also don’t get that the more you get good at pitching the better contact you make on full swings. It really is the key to getting better. I don’t let my kids take full swings until they have hit several good shots with half swings.
I think I’m the least natural ability golfer around, lack confidence and score the same way. But I’m the only golfer I play with that will actually attempt a flop shot and pull it off 8 out 10 times. (Only when needed). I love bunkers, when everyone I play with hates them. When I’m on the tee with a driver/wood in my hand I duff it 20yards in front of me at least 4 times a round screwing my score, because I believe I have no natural ability. Then get cross about it and ruining my round. But now I have just decided watching this video that I am a talented golfer, I put in the practice and I have regular lessons it’s just what’s between my ears that stops me. My skill set is actually high, I’ve just decided I will be a good golfer because I am capable of shooting low scores.
Im 1000% sure that listening to you made me break 80. Everyday I drive to work i listen to your advice and started using it. Nice feeling playing a good score and best feeling playing your score while planning it from the whole back setting up your play/shots.😊
The short game point is one of the best. I AM a -10 and Matt was so right. I only hit maybe 6 greens a round, being able to NOT 3-putt on the other 12 makes ALL the difference.

Good stuff....thanks! Distance Claims: The belief that many golfers drive the ball beyond 250 yards is exaggerated. Wedge Gapping: Obsessing over precise gapping between wedges is unnecessary; focus on fitting and consistent distances. Pre-Shot Routine: A pre-shot routine doesn’t significantly slow down the game if integrated efficiently. Aggression in Golf: Golf is not about aggression or grinding; it’s about letting go and playing relaxed. Proximity to Hole: Pros don’t always hit as close to the hole as people think; understanding average proximity is key. LPGA Distance: LPGA pros’ distances are more relatable, and their tight dispersion is what leads to better scoring. Talent Myth: The idea that talent is innate is false; practice and training are what develop golf skills. Flow State: Achieving a flow state by getting out of your own way can lead to playing your best golf. Putting Percentages: Understanding the actual percentages of putts made by pros from various distances can set realistic expectations. Tour Player Distance: No tour pro is considered short; even the “short” hitters are quite long by amateur standards. Breaking 100: Strategies for breaking 100 are not limiting; they evolve as you improve and aim for lower scores. Course Length: A 7,000-yard course is long, and playing appropriate tees for your skill level is important. Short Game Importance: Regardless of your long game, a strong short game is crucial for scoring. Handicap Misunderstanding: Handicaps are based on potential, not average scores, and involve a calculation considering course difficulty. Mental Game: It’s not just about toughness; it’s about knowing your strengths and planning your shots. Favorite Clubs: Trusting and playing your favorite clubs can lead to better shots and scores. Shot Planning: Understanding the shots you like and setting up your favorite distances is key. Practice Importance: Practicing short game is essential, as you will still miss greens even as you improve. Driver Use: Knowing when to use your driver and when to leave it in the bag is part of smart golf strategy. Multi-Layered Thinking: Golf requires interconnected thinking; nothing is just black or white. Mental Hurdles: Overcoming mental hurdles and trusting your ability to make putts is part of the game.
I only just found your EXTRAS channel and very happy 🎉. You are truly a shining light in the dim corners of the human golfer’s mind. I started meditation a few years ago and can see how your self awareness and mindfulness are right at the centre of golf improvement. As you say, we have to get out of our own way. Last month I beat my best ever front 9 by long way! Because of several circumstances, including a playing partner who I was at complete ease with, I shot a round that until that moment, I thought might be beyond me. Now I know, it is in me, I have to get out of the way. Keep it up Matt, you are doing so much good for us amateurs!

Previously a 5 handicapper and now 1000+ handicapper. I used to play almost every day and stopped for more than 15 years. I am getting back to golf. The swing is still there. Just need to freshen and tighten it up. May take a bit of time especially the short game. Yikes. Still playing older Mizuno irons, Vokey wedges and recently got a Scotty just to see what's the hullabaloo is all about. Pretty good. I am hooked. I agree with everything you said. Many golfers think they are PGA tour players. It's nothing that fancy. Just learn the right fundamentals. Play within your capability. Practice the short game. It is all feel and takes a lot of time to get the feel and 80% of the time, you will fail . Putt with intention, learn to stabilize your putting strokes and aim for two putts. Take a bogey and move on. Forget about the Tiger Woods 20 yards winding putts into the hole. Play to improve instead of playing for bragging rights. Most important of all, please learn golf etiquette on the course. Stop looking for your lost balls forever. Let people play through. Swallow your PGA tour player pride.
So many of these are things I learned and understood when I started my golfing adventure. Pro dispersion/grouping is a perfect example. The highlights and TV analysts make it seem like they are better than they are, in reality, the most memorable shots are misses that worked out because they know what their dispersion is for each club.

love your vids! question about putting. I struggle with lag putts when I go to different courses. Is there a sure fire way to get these right? I nail them on the practice green, but on the course I'm usually leaving it way short.
first few holes of the round envision your hole 3 feet past the real hole. see how you go with that, and adapt after the first few holes. difficult to answer because most practice greens are entirely different speeds to the on course greens
No BS, I am a 30 HC and my drives are normally 220-230 yds. Yesterday I shot 275 and 280 *total* (just two shots right in the fairway) granted both holes role a bit downhill, but I honestly have seen such distances ever so often on a mid handicapper. Cheers!
10:43 "You don't want to shatter the image of yourself of being a crappy golfer." This is SO TRUE!!! It's how we use the "Law of Attraction" in reverse.
One of the things I agree with you most, Matt, is the power of purposeful practice. Just going to the range and smacking balls around for an hour is not helping your game. Pick a target and a distance and play to it. Line up every shot and develop that pre-shot routine. 50 balls of purposeful practice is way more beneficial than 100 balls of just hitting shots.
20:52 ONE more comment for the engagement! Baha! Now you’ve been baptized for the REAL PGA tour! Every good pro has a mid round wildlife encounter to remember!
On wedges you have some hidden stock yardages too with a 1" grip down, you can make the same exact swing but just choke up 1" and get repeatable distances to cover gaps.
Another great video with info of gold!!! Place another order this morning. Looking forward to it getting here next week--please make sure the ants stay there. 😂😂
I am playing for about 15y now (handicap around 20) and still play my half set (odd ping's plus a ping 3 wood extra plus a putter, so 8 clubs!) that I bought in the beginning. I am not consistent enough for a "real" driver (but might consider a G430 max 10k if the price comes down in a few years). I am very happy playing a club that's "easy" and that I like and that am consistent with (like my 7). Many of my friends (their handicaps has stayed >>30) keep trying, far en hard every time. And then are either OoB, in the water, in the bunker, in the rough etc. etc. costing them deer points, whilst I take that extra stroke to stay in control. Happy-the-Pappy!!
man the past few rounds i have been 3-4 over after 6 holes playing the tips at new courses . I have literally said out loud i’ll find a way to mess it up , and i do . I’m so close i just got to finish the 9a with a good attitude
I work as a starter at a course and see 80-100 amateur golfers each day. The biggest misconception I see in golfers 40 yo and younger (I.E. majority of golfers) is that they see the course as an amusement park.
I’m missing 3 and 4 footers. You speak about “stabbing” these putts, confidentiality. Have you done a video on your putting technique for short putts, especially with slopes?
I fell for the misconception that I am somehow capable of hitting a 260 yard low cut 3 wood out of the rough. Cost me setting a new personal best. Didn’t think I had that good of a round going and ended up very disappointed when I added them all up 😂
Love all your stuff Bro Hammer , truly great advice Baas , my girlfriend is not a size zero. Any advice on golf apparel and clothing for her?? Most bs doesn’t even have pockets
I obviously don’t exist, but I hit the ball 300+ and it’s not worth it. I’m a big guy but still not a great golfer by any means. The only round I’ve ever broken 80 was without a driver in my bag - keeping it in play is way more important than bombing it. We don’t have spectators to hit or forecaddies to help us find the ball, we can’t get away with the same level of miss that the pros do
I’m just getting back into golf after being out for a decade. The biggest thing I’ve realized is to just get out of my own head and enjoy myself. I’m out there to relax and forget about everything for a little while.
2:49 I had this exact exchange with a troll the other day. Then I must have played with him the next day, as a two we played 18 in 3h 45m. He spent the last 10 holes bitching about the pace as we were were the only group of 2 on the course
Ive driven a green that was 320 but the other 90 percent of the time i lose the ball. Another problem with hitting that far is finding it for your second shot settled.
@@golfsidekickextras Is she looking for balls? Or lunch? I've had a few caddies that fill the cart up with food they find on the course. One was pulling plants out of the side of a lake. Looked a bit like a leak once she had stripped off what she didn't want.
Yes, do your pre shot routine while others are doing theirz! When you know theyre about to hit, look where there ball went, tell them they suck, then shank it yourself. Play quick bad golf!
Mental game and course management got my hcp down allot last season also not playing hero ball. I'm playing of a 16hcp now in my third season. I'm now working on my wedgeshots within 70m, that will hopefully bring me down to about hcp 14.
I will say I have a chipper in my bag for my shots around the green. I don’t care what others think. It gives me the confidentiality I need for my approach shots!
I’ve been golfing under a year and hit a 263 drive. Very confused that you say not many people hit over 250. I’m an absolute amateur so if I’ve done it that makes me wonder how many people who have played a few years consistently do it. Maybe you’re hanging out with old dudes or something?
I hit my driver over 280, and am a 7 handicap after 3 1/2 years. I am going to play on the champions tour when I’m old enough in a 10 years. I hope to be sponsored by Matty Boom boom enterprises.
I can hit 280 all day long, my trouble is keeping it in the fairway 😂 Instead of believing the wheels will fall off on the back 9, you tell yourself, “now that I’m warmed up on the front I can have a good round on the back 9.”
Your short game is solid... I know. I was taught to not have my trigger finger on the shaft in my right hand. It promotes pushing the putter face at the ball.. getting wristy. I see you getting a bit wristy sometimes, but you know your stroke and sink your share of putts. Just a thought...
putting is the most personal area of the game what i have come to realize is there are only a couple fundamentals: 1. dont sway 2. keep that head still 3. dont look to see where the ball is going out of anxiety thats about all. how you stroke it doesnt matter the slightest. i have seen hook spin on putts, slice spin on putts, wrist stroke, mechanical stroke and overall, the only bad putters have been anxious peepers, swayers or head movers
I can drive it 300 yards regularly and my little brother when he hits it good can drive it 320 , I didn't realize how rare that was til I saw the damn pro averages
Not sure how it works with ask of them. Bryan bros and Micah’s and Grant and hoogle and Buster Jack and Ben kruper all managed by the same guy. Is there an in?
I think with the driver misconception a lot of golfers think they drive 280 because they have in fact driven it 280 that one time down wind and slightly down hill with a perfect strike
@@HelloImClipClop ok big man, I think more to my point was that most golfers think of their longest shots with any club and think that’s how far they hit it I’ve seen it many times on the course
LPGA is a way better way to watch golf as a beginner. I play with a Lady Playa every weekend. Obviously, I hit my clubs farther, but she hits it in play, EVERY SINGLE SHOT, and the focus is on setup. She is about a +15. Way better than watching PGA and taking away, "I need to smash distance," to be good at golf, and being +35 HA.
Massive misconception is that your shirt and shorts need to match.
🤣 Thank you ... I will do more my best to ... missmatch. 💪🏻😎🤘🏻

The only round I’ve ever broken 80 was without a driver in my bag - keeping it in play is way more important than bombing it. We don’t have spectators to hit or forecaddies to help us find the ball, we can’t get away with the same level of miss that the pros do
I shot shot 76 with three balls OB, conservative makes me score worse in some situations honestly
If you think the difference between 80 an 6 under is forecaddies etc your delusional
I’m just getting back into golf after being out for a decade. The biggest thing I’ve realized is to just get out of my own head and enjoy myself. I’m out there to relax and forget about everything for a little while.
Another superb lesson! Cheers 🍻👌👍
Wonderful videos learn something every time. Thanks
I need to know this mans back story. So many questions 😂
2:49 I had this exact exchange with a troll the other day. Then I must have played with him the next day, as a two we played 18 in 3h 45m. He spent the last 10 holes bitching about the pace as we were were the only group of 2 on the course
Great video Matt enjoyed this one
Baus comment "This is bs!" Could be applied to 95% UA-cam golf comtent
most people think red ants will never fall on their heads in a round, wrong again ! kak funny clip. I like that it was a surprise too. a little gem.
Ive driven a green that was 320 but the other 90 percent of the time i lose the ball. Another problem with hitting that far is finding it for your second shot settled.
There is only one question in golf that I can't find an answer for. What is your caddy doing while you're talking to us?
Being paid that’s for sure
@@golfsidekickextras Is she looking for balls? Or lunch? I've had a few caddies that fill the cart up with food they find on the course. One was pulling plants out of the side of a lake. Looked a bit like a leak once she had stripped off what she didn't want.
@@thehairygolfer nah these are well paid by the baus so they just chillin and waiting for lunch time
@@GolfSidekick Well paid by the old man here too. No cheap charlie hiding under my hat.
Yes, do your pre shot routine while others are doing theirz!
When you know theyre about to hit, look where there ball went, tell them they suck, then shank it yourself.
Play quick bad golf!
What slows down the game is having three people group around the fourth person and wait for his shot before going toward their own balls.
Mental game and course management got my hcp down allot last season also not playing hero ball. I'm playing of a 16hcp now in my third season. I'm now working on my wedgeshots within 70m, that will hopefully bring me down to about hcp 14.
Bro that will not bring you down to 14. That will bring you down to 9 My boy
@golfsidekickextras I hope so I'm still struggling with consistency with my irons distance wise.
Wow, I hadn’t subscribe bloody love this South African channel, keep up the good work.
Look up the stats - it’s all there online don’t be lazy and then watch this

I hit my driver over 280, and am a 7 handicap after 3 1/2 years. I am going to play on the champions tour when I’m old enough in a 10 years. I hope to be sponsored by Matty Boom boom enterprises.
These videos are the best
I got the glimpse the last 27 holes. 40, 39, 41. So close.
I enjoy the way you teach!
I can hit 280 all day long, my trouble is keeping it in the fairway 😂
Instead of believing the wheels will fall off on the back 9, you tell yourself, “now that I’m warmed up on the front I can have a good round on the back 9.”
'Confidential' 😂😂😂
What a great video!!!! 👏 👏 👏
Your short game is solid... I know. I was taught to not have my trigger finger on the shaft in my right hand. It promotes pushing the putter face at the ball.. getting wristy. I see you getting a bit wristy sometimes, but you know your stroke and sink your share of putts. Just a thought...
putting is the most personal area of the game
what i have come to realize is there are only a couple fundamentals:
1. dont sway
2. keep that head still
3. dont look to see where the ball is going out of anxiety
thats about all. how you stroke it doesnt matter the slightest. i have seen hook spin on putts, slice spin on putts, wrist stroke, mechanical stroke and overall, the only bad putters have been anxious peepers, swayers or head movers
Love the positivity!
I can drive it 300 yards regularly and my little brother when he hits it good can drive it 320 , I didn't realize how rare that was til I saw the damn pro averages
You’re right, always find a target to Hey Matt.
the caddies laughing at the ants
Ben hogan used to collect course cards from various courses, then would simulate playing those course from the range. So far ahead of his time.
Exactly and it’s even easier now with gps apps
This is the only guy giving real world advice that we can actually use. Set up a match with Bryan Bros and Peter Finch
I was hoping Tacoma would set up a Bryan Bros vs Golf Sidekick
Not sure how it works with ask of them. Bryan bros and Micah’s and Grant and hoogle and Buster Jack and Ben kruper all managed by the same guy. Is there an in?
@@golfsidekickextras I thought with you and Bryan Bros playing Tacomo that Tacomo would set something up
Such good advice man 🏌️♂️👍
I need that shirt and matching hat in my golf wardrobe.
I think with the driver misconception a lot of golfers think they drive 280 because they have in fact driven it 280 that one time down wind and slightly down hill with a perfect strike
Buddy 280 is genuinely just not that difficult with a driver… idk what you want us to tell ya. Some people are just athletic in general…
280+ is less than 3% of the golfing population.
Out of 100 golfers, 3 can hit it 280 on average.
Step outside your bubble and meet some real people.
@@HelloImClipClop ok big man, I think more to my point was that most golfers think of their longest shots with any club and think that’s how far they hit it
I’ve seen it many times on the course
LPGA is a way better way to watch golf as a beginner. I play with a Lady Playa every weekend. Obviously, I hit my clubs farther, but she hits it in play, EVERY SINGLE SHOT, and the focus is on setup. She is about a +15. Way better than watching PGA and taking away, "I need to smash distance," to be good at golf, and being +35 HA.
This guy: anyone who says they hit 280 is lying
Also this guy: watch me hit 280
Mine went 329 though
@@golfsidekickextras I believe you. Don’t worry about that first guy
Looks like the video starts on hole 5 at Kirimaya
