If we sum up the key ideas : Gen 1 - -Pokemon designed to convey what a Pokemon is : a creature associated with an element. -A limited array of colors ( Gameboy limitations + clarity about elements ). -Pokemon conceived as monsters, with organic, sharp, natural looking shapes. ( Concept art =/= sprite ). -Really simple to read, some design are really simple, just a horn is enough to make an animal into a monster. The legendaries are really simple. Gen 2 - -Pokemon designed as a continuation of gen 1 but also as a wildlife, more inspired by nature and japanese folklore. ( Theme of the story ) - More colors and originality - a consistency is created thanks to pattern in the design ( circles, rings... ) that look more 'handcrafted' than natural - The design are more roundish and gentle, less aggressive and natural looking - The legendaries are purposefully designed to look different and more sophisticated Gen 3 - - Pokemon conceived as a wildlife that adapts to different biomes. - Perfect balance between Gen 1 roughness and level of details, and gen 2 simplicity. - many colors, visually striking ( complementary colors ) that echoes the diverse environnements - a consistency created thanks to several patterns ( circles, zigzag, dots, rings ... ) - A mix between organic, natural shapes and technical, technological ones, that characterizes legendaries ( theme of the game : Balance between culture and nature ). Gen 4 - - Pokemon mostly conceived as a continuation of previous generations ( pre-evos, evos....) - Globally, the colors are darker and less flamboyant ( probably related to the cold climate of the region ? ) - Overall, the Pokemon look a bit over-designed (extra spikes, fangs, patterns, colors, ornaments) ... some outlines are difficult to read - Paradoxically, the naturalness ( fur, muscle / bone structure, etc... ) tends to be simplified in favor of these added elements. - The lore is very important ( theme of the game ), therefore the legendaries have a strong identity and design elements. The complexity of the design in general echoes the legendaries. Gen 5 - - Pokemon conceived as a reset of previous generation, with obvious equivalents. Thus, it's a whole new set of creatures with a great diversity in term of design. - Hard to categorize overall design : sophisticated design, goofy ones, simple ones ... ( many designers work together ) - Pokemon conceived to be better understood when seen in motion - Urban inspiration that impacts design in general. - Issue : Some design rather look like a declination of a concept than unique creatures. Gen 6 - - Two different kinds of design : Mega-evolution purposefully over-designed to look super-edgy and regular Pokemon. - Pokemon conceived to be 3D models, which can turn out to be problematic ( CF. Delphox ) and former design ( that look really pale ) - Theme of this gen is beauty and eleganza, many design have a special edge that echoes manufactured things ( Baroque motif, classical ornaments, etc... ), thus the creatures look less natural looking. - Paradoxically, the shapes are simpler and rounder than ever, almost western-cartoon looking with smaller, round eyes, etc... gen 7 - - Overall the Pokemon look really simple and roundish, that suits the laid back spirit of this gen - Bright saturated colors that actually help to read the design -An apparent simplicity that is actually really detailed and elaborated, without looking cluttered. - No unnecessary elements tacked on the design, rather naturally incorporated. - The ultra-beast look super outlandish and are purposefully designed this way to contrast with actual Pokemon. ( architectural or streamline slick shapes ). Gen 8 - - Almost every design is a nod to an aspect of British culture. - Ultra-bright, neon colors that stress the theme of this gen ( Industry and sport industry V.S tradition ). Also Darker, 'punky' version of existing Pokemon. - Overall, a feeling of unfinished design. Many are constructed with simple geometrical shapes and look western-cartooney. A lack of stylization. It seems they have been conceptualized directly as 3D figures, even before concept art were polished, due to a lack of time. - The concept and backstory are more developed than the final execution. A lot of humour but lackluster design. ( Especially legendaries ) Gen 9 - I'm eager to know what will be the art direction. I hope they'll continue gen 3 and 8 natural and detailed style.
I really like how you present all this info as objectively as you can! Really great overview that made me think a lot, and appreciate each gen for its unique qualities 😁 also, couldn't agree more about the excessive spikes lol
You could've talked about the good/positive designs of Gen 5 tho. While I do agree that those Pokemon you mentioned are some of the weakest designs , there are some great ideas too such as Krookodile, Excadrill, Volcarona, Mienfoo and Mienshao, Haxorus, Scolipede and Galvantula to give some examples. Still a great video tho that I appreciate
@@mrkill2020 no man, his analysis is very nice and enjoyable. My recommendation is to watch the video. After I started watching I couldn't stop because there's a lot to learn from him
The Emolga patcharisu vs skwovet and greedent comparison really isn’t that fair. Although they are all squirrels, two of them are different designs which are both pikachu clones and one is an evolution line based on a more traditional but goofy squirrel
You may say gen 2 doesn't have a lot of common, repeating design trends, but I seem to remember going through the gen 2 dex and noticing just how many of them have black/dark colours around or near their eyes. All 3 legendaries at the end of the dex have them, and that's just the beginning. Though I guess that was just a precursor to gen 3, even if there, the range of colours is broader. The montage of side-by-side comparisons really made it really occur to me how contrary tyranitar is, as most of the gen 2 equivalents are much smoother and softer-looking than their gen 1 counterparts, but tyranitar looks like a kaiju, much like several gen 1 pokémon, whereas dragonite is all curves and cuddly shapes. I guess the pseudo-legends are kind of like those dots in the yin yang symbol when comparing the 2 gens, in a way. I never was that fond of ambipom, but looking back, it just hit on me that its nose was probably a reference to a snub-nosed monkey. Now that's got me wondering if there was a more appealing way to implement that sort of monkey's nose as a design principal. Though I could see why it wouldn't really work on ambipom, whose original form appears to be an exaggeration of a monkey's prehensile tail, which would apply to the likes of spider monkeys rather than an Asian species like the snub-nose. Though I suppose with Sinnoh's being the northernmost Japanese region, it would make sense to base the form introduced there on a snow monkey? More food for thought than I expected. I beg to differ regarding gen 5's version exclusives. They can be subtle, but I'd say the differences really tie into the versions' themes in a way that's never been matched in other gens. Reuniclus is in a bubble, basically in its own little world, kind of like an idealist that refuses to acknowledge any sort of bitter truths. Gothitelle, on the other hand, is a psychic seer which literally gets a vision of when you are going to die, basically being forced to behold a bitter truth of the world. I could go on. Also, I guess you never felt like waiting to catch something with sweet honey trees, considering combee and cherubi apparently completely evade your attention, regarding multiple-headed pokémon. The one theme you left out regarding gen 7 is alchemy, which is particularly apparent in the legendaries, with the box art legendaries incorporating the alchemic properties of the sun and moon into their designs, and magearna and type: null and silvally basically being alechemy experiments.
This was super fun to binge while replaying Pokemon White. You have a great presentation style and am looking forward to more videos :) keep up the great work!
I really liked your videos! Instead of screaming, overreacting, and talking without saying something you keep your focus in a calm informative way with some opinion-based nuance. I really appreciate your authenticity!
Gen 1: Pokemon are typical RPG monsters, with very simple designs and colours. Gen 2: Pokemon are made cuter and more friendly. A trend that stayed since then. Gen 3: Pokemon started to be more complex and abstract. All Pokemon fits perfectly in their environment. Gen 4: Pokemon have a lot of distractions: spikes, strange colour combinations, etc. Gen 5: Pokemon hits the highest point of experimentation. Gen 6: Pokemon designs are the opposite of the previous generation: all new designs are solid, with almost no experimentation. Gen 7: Pokemon are even more fitted to their environment than gen 3. The designs are natural, perfect. Gen 8: Pokemon are fitted to the region, not the environment anymore. Overall, the best generations in terms of design are 7, 6, and 3, in my opinion. On the other hand, the worst are 4, 8, and 1.
Concerning the starters, the analysis is different of course. The designers spend much more time thinking about the starters than a regular Pokemon. For example, one of the best starters of all time is Scorbunny in my opinion, and Intelion is one of the worst third stage starters.
With the gen 4 change suggestion you gave for Purugly, I agree with the sentiment but I can't agree with the change you made. I feel that without the widesweeping ears, it actually makes the design feel uneven and ironically unfinished while still looking overly complicated, just now in the wrong areas. I feel like without the swooping ears it makes the design look way too bottom heavy. You'd think that would be a good thing but it just kind of looks still cluttered but in a more unbalanced way. I think if you kept the general shape language but without the purple finger look, it would be much better. I also think the shape of the origjnal ears mostly work because it goes in a similar swooping motion of the body but in the opposite direction.
1:01:34 Look at Alder and Marlin again, they're both light skinned. (Marlin is heavily tanned, but you can see his true skin tone on his feet and at his waist.) Your main point still stands though.
Yeah I can understand the confusion with Marlin given he has such a deep tan, but I was super confused over Alder. That being said, Irish and Italians in the US (in the past) used to not be considered white and were oppressed based on this, so like, skintone isn't always the most reliable factor. Like assuming any dark skinned character is immediately black when there are many ethnicities with dark skin.
I think more of zacian and zamacenta as more traditional legends like the swords of justice group from gen 5 i mean not all pokemon have to be an influential part at the creation of the universe like every mayor legendary since gen 3, they are just legendary heroes, tho i agree with kubfu and urshifu and the horses they dont hold up
1:05:15 Actually they are also could be based on Nurarihyon (giving them their Royal look), and Kurage-no-Hinotama (way more likely) which makes them gain the Ghost types, plus jellifsh are usually ghostly because of their look, and they do also remind me of clothes
Gen 1 to 4 are real Pokemon designs that made Pokemon successful. These new Paldea humanoid designs are terrible and don't get me started on those legends that turn Into vehicles how ridiculous.

the ultra beasts were definitely a way for the designers to do basically anything they wanted, they really stand out as aliens and not pokemon
