    I think Delphox was done dirty by the 3D models. Watching the way it moves in the anime makes it so fun and fluid and it’s only the way the model is styled that hurts it

    Fun fact, provided by DYKG: Torchic's evo line was based on how people buy cute baby animals, like chicks, but start neglecting them or outright abandon them once they aren't tiny and cute anymore.
    Combusken is meant to be "ugly" as a way of trying how superficial you are.

      You're sort of correct Tor is based off painted chics in sold in Eastern countries sold at festivals, yes these chick's were eventually abandoned due to the fact they weren't cute anymore. However the designer purposely made blaziken "ugly" for the reason of wanting you to put it in a box and use other pokemon instead of overleveling your starter.
      It wasn't really made to shame you at all it was meant for you to be grossed out by the humanoid appearance and ferocity enough to move on to other pokemon.

    • @johnperez9571
      @johnperez9571 Рік тому +21

      That ofc backfired in a "good" way if you like standing starters. The popularity of the pokemon ensured most starters afterwards would be on two legs.

    To be fair, the only reason golem gets a reptilian like face and skin is because of the trading mechanic that was introduced. The idea was that you would trade a machoke for a graveller, then mid trade, they would exchange their own characteristics. While golem looks more humanoid for some reason now, it also lost 2 arms that graveller had in addition to its standard 2. And machamp oddly got gravellers 2 extra arms. It is weird and i admit the two final evolutions might make someone timid, they are genuinely cool to think about pokemon and their interactions with one another

    I didn't even think that Absol might be here. I love a lot of things around it. The Yin and Yang incorporation, its trying to warn of disasters while just getting blamed instead, its majestic and elegant design, perfect blend of a beautiful and powerful look. Such mysterisouly focused eyes. One of my favorite general designs are cats, foxes and dogs. Being Dark Type is always a plus for me, I'm naturally a night owl and I tend to find designs for shadowy/nocturnal animals much more interesting/cool. Absol is my all time favorite. ...And people are mad because it's "edgy"?

      @princeapoopoo5787 Рік тому +34

      What's funny about the "it edgy so it bad" take is that ... a big part of the reason why I immediately grabbed one for my original Sapphire team was because of the "edge". Being a lonely canine in which disaster follows is such a metal concept and my dumb little gothy heart was like "Yes! That's the one!" Eventually I appreciated Absol for other qualities, and it is still easily in my top 50 Pokemon.

    • @metaltornado3457
      @metaltornado3457 Рік тому +23

      I hate that people use "edgy" to mean bad when it's just a quality that can be done well or poorly. Some of my favorite childhood shows/games Ren and Stimpy, Mortal Kombat and Doom are peak edginess, but they are also some of the most iconic franchises of the 90's. The word also gets misused to mean anything that isn't cute or super happy all the time, so a lot of tragic or brooding characters get mislabeled as edgy for having the gall to show emotion once in a while.

    I did expect Lopunny to pop up in the controversy. The idea for the design of the pokémon to be based of a Playboy Bunny is quite interesting since they are popular in Japan. I just like to think Lopunny takes its form from the very strong bonding the trainer works on effortlessly on obtaining. When the trainer finally gains Buneary's trust, that influence made it want and try to look more human-like, all because of a very strong physical/spiritual trust between the two of them.
    I love Lopunny for this concept I like to think of, and because it gives of motherly vibes; the idea of caring and supporting others.

    The introduction episode saved Muk for me, he's just so LARGE, it makes his design make sense to me. He's not just Grimer, he looks like the logical conclusion of getting stronger, older and bigger. He's too big to have the same cohesion of his prevolution, but he also doesn't seem like he cares. It was never intended to be a train. Fans just got angry when their completely made up expectation didn't come true. The whole line is a reference to coal and coal related concepts getting progressively bigger:
      Rolycoly is a literal piece of coal and a miner cap.
      Carkol is a miner car. With even more coal.
      Coalossal is a coal monster that carries coal in it's back like a miner.

Some of the 3D models on the 3DS didn't look the best scrunched up on a screen, and if we saw the art before the models, maybe people would feel at least a little bit better about Delphox. Honestly, I didn't have it spoiled and it still ended up being the first time I was actually kinda disappointed by my starter's final evolution. Contrary to what TG7 said though, I don't mind the femininity. My main gripe seems to be that it's just a hairier Braixen. It doesn't really add on much, especially to the branch wand gimmick. Fennekin eats twigs, Braixen uses a branch as a magic wand and stores it in its tail which makes it look like a witch's broom, and Delphox uses the same wand except it now hides it in its fur robe sleeves? Kind of anticlimactic. It should've become a either a witch's broom or a wizard staff if they wanted to build on the concept. Other than that, maybe they could've found a way to make its ears look like the typical witch/wizard hat. I wouldn't have had any issues if they went in a completely different direction and made it quadrupedal, but I can also see how that might be a bit too similar to Ninetales, so I get it.

I was mainly hoping for something cool to happen with the branch, like turning it into a witch broom or a wizard staff, but that aspect went virtually unchanged. Other than that, I would've liked if they had managed to work in that iconic mage hat like they did the scarf for Greninja and I wish they'd kept yellow and white as the main colors because even now they help Fennekin and Braixen stand out better amongst the sea of red and orange Fire starters.

The easiest example I can think of is eating food. In some cultures you have to eat all your food or it’s rude or you have to leave a small portion to show it the food was so good you couldn’t finish or it’s rude. So how do you do both? I think it’s good to be knowledgeable on other cultures and mindful but getting offended over silly things especially for other people is insane. Even if the design tropes have always been in the franchise, or are a part of Japanese culture/mythology, which has a lot of strange and wacky characters, which people denounce as nonsensical/bad.
    I don't really understand most of the complaints people make when it comes to designs, saying it's too human, lazy, just an object, etc. There's supposed to be variety and there's nothing wrong with simplicity or complexity, IMO, but sometimes it's just a sense of "What are you even talking about?"

      There was a slow but gradual change of design in Pokémon and now the whole concept of Pocket Monster is not a thing anymore
      Some design were simply to succesful (blaziken and gradevoir) and led to always more imitations (like Lucario)
      Now also Pokémon are more cartoony, with less ""realistic"" features, this help a lot with merchandising, which is the main source of money for this IP.
      If you want a good explample of this just looks at the new evolutions, they are literally a dressed up versions of umbreon (which is the most popular evee)

    • @darkandwindie
      @darkandwindie Рік тому +4

      @@stylesheetra9411 Heavy disagree. Yes, there is a change in design, sure. Sugimori stated that with Gen 3, he wanted to push the notion of what could or couldn't be a Pokemon, which lead to Blaziken. However, Blaziken wasn't meant to be a success. He said that Blaziken was meant to give a feeling of disappointment after Torchic grew up, similar to how painted chicks (what Torchic is based on), grew up and weren't cute anymore. So no, the change wasn't 'just for success'
      The concept of Pocket Monster is still the same. Pokemon have always been cartoony. Just because certain older Pokemon's limbs have a few 'joint lines' and edges or their proportions are real doesn't negate that some of them resembled cartoon animals.
      and not to be rude, but that Eeveelution point just feels like a clear example of what I said about 'What are you even talking about?' all of the Eeveelutions were "designed with the times", per the actual designer. are you saying that because they also don't have 'neck ruffs' that Leafeon, Glaceon, and Sylveon are Umbreon clones? If so, that's very dumb.

      It was a new idea and It was cool, The problem is that it was way to succesful
      If for every swampert toy they sell 10 blaziken toys, there is no point to create Pokémon like swampert anymore
      Pokémon company make is profit through merchandise not via videogames, so they followed this thread for the new Pokémon
      For eveelotions I think absurd you dont even understand the problem, vaporeon was literally a fish, flareon and jolteon had "elemental motif" fur
      Leafeon is different colored umbreon with 10 leaves on it, Imagine if flareon would be a umbreon with 2 flames ears, rapidash tail and other 7 flames randomly throw on its body like leafeon is
      Glaceon have nothing related to ice on its fur but the fringe nor is body evolved to survive in cold temperature (like vaporeon)

    Some thoughts:
    Charizard: I definitely understand the resentment many people have, as Charizard seems to be Gamefreak's favorite, but you have to admit it's a great design. Its simplicity is a good thing imo, and it lends itself to versatile form changes. All its alternate forms look sick as hell, and it's because they're built on an already very solid design.
    Combusken: It's a chicken that's molting. It's supposed to be a bit awkward. But I love it because it still very much looks like a fire-fighting chicken. I actually prefer it over Blaziken. Blaziken looks a bit too awkward for me. I think I would like it better if it kept its bird feet, and looked a bit more like a raptor and less like a human. I never really liked that Blaziken's feet are cylinders with claws coming out the bottom. I still have a soft spot for the entire line though, as Torchic was my first pokemon. I loved Sobble but was split on Inteleon. Currently I'm just feeling disappointed with it, because I think it's design could've been so much better. I don't really hate the design, I just don't like it because I love Sobble so much and it feels like missed potential.

      Sure, maybe Intelleon could have been executed better, but I've never understood the hate. I don't love it, but just because something is perceived as "weird", that doesn't mean it's automatically bad. I think the theme of it's line is better than most.

    There was an article about the torchic starter line and why combuskin looked so unappealing. They are based off the painted chicks that parents get their kids at Asian festivals cuz there cute, but they often get rid of them as they grow up. He wanted the final evolution to look cool too show that keeping your chick when it grows up brings something great n all.

    It's a darn shame about Delphox being here tho, many complained about the big fluff ears and i say " Well yeah..it Evolved"
    Anyway seems the hate/Controversy for it calmed down as of late and it even got into Pokemon Unite~ ain't gonna forget about the 2020 Pokemon of the year poll either!
    Primarina is the same way also!

    When Rolycoly was first revealed, was I super excited at the thought of it becoming a locomotive monster because Thomas the Tank Engine was one of my main childhood obsessions (along side Pokemon), and the idea of having a full-on locomotive Pokemon had me excited. But instead they went with a generic rock monster design. As if we didn't already had enough of those. The disappointment I had that day when I first saw Coalossal was immeasurable. Coalossal has grown on me since then, I still can't help but feel that it was a pretty big missed opportunity.

      It was never intended to be a train. Like, at all. The whole line actual concept is things related to coal.
      That's why it starts as a piece of coal/miner cap, the to a miner car full of coal, then to a miner monster that carries coal and then to a entire coal mine with a giant furnace in its gmax form.

      A train pokemon would have been just as stupid as the ice cream cone, the keychain, the apple pie, etc. etc. etc. Gen 1 and 2 will always be superior because their designs weren't so corny.
