I had forgotten how you stared this generation by chosing violence against Treecko.
I think Treecko is nice nut Sceptile absolutely deserves it
Right what did he do😢
Never ask Treecko what he did in the Balkans
It felt like a slap to the face 😢
I’m inclined to agree though.
Most of my fondness for treecko comes from the Anime.
Putting a twig in his mouth really would’ve elevated his design for me.
(Treecko was still my first pokemon though lol).
Professor something's up with my pokedex
My Pokedex:
"The worst gen 3 starter" YOU TAKE THAT BACK
My son Treecko...
Lileep and Cradily are actually based off crinoids, which aren't actually plants at all but marine animals akin to corals! I imagine game freak went with the grass type though since they do LOOK incredibly plant like.
I mean...as far as pokemon are concerned, ALL grass types are more like animals.
Sorta like a backwards sudowoodo
Crinoids are related to sea-stars not corals as they are echinoderms, not cnidarians.
Alien DNA Monsters, the embodiment of shooting stars, jet fighter dragons, ground-shaking Kaijus and meteor-eating, tier-list destroying Gods of the Sky. All of them; Bush-league. Amateur creations next to the true magnum opus of Legendary Pokémon design:
*B I G F I S H*
This post is approved by Mr1Upz gang
Besmirching Treecko's good name once was not enough for you, you felt the need to humiliate him on the thumbnail of the compilation as well?
My pet theory about Grovyle is that it's based off a modern interpretation of a raptor (dromeosaurs), with the leaves representing feathers. That would tie with Sceptile's inspiration being another dinosaur (Dilophosaurus).
If that were true in any capacity it would be pretty impressive considering that the idea of raptors having feathered wings, tail fans or crests was nearly nonexistent outside of professional paleontology back in 2003.
The HRT joke about Froslass made me spit out my drink lmaooo
(King Neptune voice) _"Why it's so good, I think I'd like to watch it a second time!"_
Hariyama’s “costume” is meant to represent the ceremonial and sponsorship aprons worn during the beginning sumo tournaments, or the little bundles of hard fabric sticks that are also a part of sumo belts or “mawashi”.
To me, he doesn’t read wrestler at all - it was extremely focused execution of sumo in his design.
Brelum is more kangaroo inspired I think and kangaroos are known stereotypically for boxing, hence the boxing mushroom.
Something I like about Kyogre's design that I don't see mentioned frequently is that it's tail resembles a phylogenetic tree, or more simply a tree of life, representing the connection between land and sea as most/all land-dwelling organisms from bacteria to humans all have ties to ancestral aquatic organisms. Not sure how intentional it is but I noticed it a while ago and it really bumped Kyogre up a few places on the list of my favorites!
coloured chicks, and rooster fights , maybe there is another animal rights violation with the second evo
3 seconds in and you already hurt my soul
Now that Gen 3 is complete, here is a reminder of Pokemon/forms missed in the reviews so far:
Munchlax
Annhilape
Overqwil
Mega Gyarados
Mega & Gigantamax Venusaur
Mega & Gigantamax Gengar
Gigantamax Butterfree
Gigantamax Machamp
Paldean Tauros & its breeds
Bloodmoon Ursaluna
Convergent designs and Paradox designs I can understand skipping for later
Some of these are the fault of timing like the gen 1 reviews being pre SV
He included clodsire in the cooper video, so I feel like those should count
7:05
I think it's interesting that you see it as looking like a kid, and honestly that probably was the intent of the design, but since my most prominent experience with Nuzleaf was Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon, in which he becomes this father figure caretaker for your character, I can only ever see him and think, "Oh look it's a fully grown, caring, responsible man with a slight country accent and a dark secret!"
Genuinely cannot believe you've already finished Gen 3. Now for Gen 4, my all-time favorite
He has already done alot of gen 4 because alot of its pokemon are evolutions to older pokemon
@@EggscellentTreeStill a lot he hasn’t covered though
@@noahtaylor1721 yeah , but it's gonna be rather short in comparison to other gens.
So… should be finished in a week given that half the Pokédex is just new evolutions for older Pokémon
@@HolyDruid7 nah , probably gonna take half a year or something like that.
I like how these videos make me analyze designs that I've "seen" a million times and yet never really looked at.
I forgot he choose to be ahater at treecko and violence this generation having the biggest of takes on certain ones.
Gen 3 will always be the peak of Pokémon design.
The Spheal line expressions are so perfect. I love my impressively round baby so much.
Moar words for the algorithm!
Anyway, thank you for doing this. Thank you for your time and attention making this. I love pokemon designs, even if I feel like there's no way I can actually understand the more modern ones. Though honestly i just love Wooloo for the same reason I love spheel.
Treeko didn’t deserve that hate
Cool. My first time seeing you put together a single place to watch all your Pokemon reviews for a Gen in one spot. I like it
He has the compilations for the other 2 gens on his main channel
Salamence's design is a big shout out to the 1970's Devilman, which does uplift it somewhat.
The pronunciation of poochyena and mightyena... I can't-
42:36 Claydol had left mw with the idea of an ancient golem back when i first encounter it.
It was in Gen5 as i was exploring the desert and found a castle buried in sand where one of team Plasmas Sages were hiding. I encountered claydol right outside of Volcarona's room.
With it paired with Volcarona it gave me a vibe of 'an anicent entity worshiped and imprisoned' though i did kinda wonder were the Claydol there to protect it, or to keep it in place.
Gen 4 is going to be short since almost all of the added evolutions/baby forms have been covered… Munchlax was missed.
Never noticed the details on clamperl evolutions and their tails. It always wows me when there are such cool details that I never was even remotely aware of.
Watching through these pokemon shorts reminded me just how much I wish TB Skyen could be a narrator in a RPG styled as if it was made from a couple decades ago
Zigzagoon slander... they are precious and wonderful and i will not hear anything else of them
I had only caught some of these reviews in my usual toilet browsing. Good to finally uh, catch them all as it were.
I started my pokemon career with the original Blue, but Gen 3 will forever hold the most nostalgia in my heart. I love the game, I love the teams, and I love the lineup of pokemon - old and new.
on the topic of salamence, I believe it was Ken Sugimori himself who said that when he's designing a Pokemon, if it starts looking a bit too cool, he goes out of his way to add something silly to balance it out, aka we were never going to get a salamence with a sleek body and proportional wings, and I think that's to its benefit. Because of its somewhat silly geometry, when I look at it, it doesn't look like some cool looking dragon, it looks like salamence
A large amount of the sub par models I am convinced would look ten times better with a different posture.
Or as a sprite. I’m a big sprite fan they have a certain charm. And more personality.
I wouldn't say every Sprite is better. Pokemon like toxicroak, muk and the porygon line look really good in 3d more so than the sprites. It depends on the pokemon, really.
i cannot wait for his reviews of gen 6 and 8
You completely missed jirachis third eye
Fun fact about Cradily! That's not a mouth, that's where it keeps its eyes. And those things around its neck aren't petals, they are grasping tentacles
Great video! Here are some additional facts I found about some of my favorites-
You're right that breloom doesn't really look like a fighting-type boxer, but the pokedex also mentions that breloom can stretch its arms out to punch people from a distance (which makes it look hilariously similar to Luffy in the pokemon anime). This hidden trick kind of works as a reference to how mushrooms can extend a surprisingly long distance underground. Additionally, Breloom might partly be inspired by Yoshi. Shroomush is very similar to a goomba, and it evolves into what is basically a mushroom-dinosaur as an extra reference to the Mario series.
Nuzleaf might be partly based on Pinnochio. It's a liar made of wood with a long nose and a dark-grass typing. Besides a long-nosed Tengu, shiftry is probably also based on a white-haired nutcracker doll, which is easier to see when it opens its giant mouth. It's an extension from nuzleafs design because it goes from a kid made of wood to an old man made of wood. With a tengu nose and a nutcracker mouth, shiftry was destined to look weird from the very beginning.
Rayquaza's fins and man-made elements may be a reference to kites (the toys, not the birds) since its the ultimate dragon-flying type that never touches the ground. The concept of dragon kites does somewhat tie into the idea of folklore and traditions from the past, but you have a good point that it does come out looking weirdly futuristic.
47:28 Shuppet is a sheet ghost, but is ALSO based on a teru teru bozu like Castform (which is why the dex entry says they gather under the eaves of houses). If the dolls ""succeed" they are given sake as a reward, but if they don't bring good weather after being hung out, they are punished with "death" by beheading, iirc reenacting the tragic end of a specific buddhist priest. Which leads into Banette's idea of a forsaken stuffed animal (as well as voodoo dolls to a lesser extent), they're both dolls seeking vengeance for how their masters wronged them.
The clampearl evos also have some "don't judge a book by its cover" info in the pokedex, with gorebyss being the violent one and huntail being the friendly one
2:19 I think swampert is squatting in their main pose, not on all fours, but it’s still pretty close & an interesting posture, kinda like a spinosaurus.
So excited for this video! Gen 3 was my first Pokémon game, so seeing them being talked about is super exciting. Thank you for making these, Sky! ❤
18:17 Pretty sure the tail is supposed to be a bobtail, as in the water plant, a bobtail for a bobcat perhaps?
Great video love your shorts and now i get to binge them all. Do you plan on doing a compilation of the other gens? Also curious what you think of some digimon designs
I always love your shorts
And watching/listening to this entire video was a joy.
Thank you
I'll be sure to look out for all your channels
Your video essays are enjoyable
The fact lotad has 6 legs makes it so weird
The fact that a pair of them dissapear when it evolves into Lombre in weirder
55:26 I've been told it does in fact match the hoenn map around pacifilog, upside down, and the red spot marking where the cavern that unlocks the regi trio (and requires a relicanth) is located. I've never tried it to confirm whether that's true though.
Chimchar line is S tier.
Torkoal was one of those Pokémon where growing up with Emerald as my first game with Diamond and Pearl on the horizon, I really hoped it’d get a post or at least a pre-evolution. I look at it now and understand that it is flawless, and any new additional member of the line would only serve as an attempt to lessen my interest in the perfection that is Torkoal.
Bro gave the treecko line and Luvdisc the same score…..
kind of a hot take but I actually really like marshtomp. It not only feels like a good middle portion from mudkip to swampert, but if it has the face only a mother could love I am its mother because I just think its cute.
I forgot you disrespected Shiftry like that
29:10, wailmer is the BOUNCE whale pokemon, the connection to beach balls, and wailord to blimps, is 100% intentional, the line is about the idea of whales leaping from the water.
Even though Treecko is my favorite of the three Hoenn starters, I can forgive your appraisal. Everyone has their own tastes and opinions and I respect that.
Just make sure you don't talk shit about my little turtle or there will be hell to pay.
What turtle? Turtwig?
How did you interpret Breloom as a bird???
I wonder if, sharpedos mega with the jaw opening far too wide and getting bigger if that looked cooler. especially since it'd fit with megas causing Pokémon pain.
I love your videos because I'm to smooth brained to over think desighns and seeing the Possible references and story in the desighns is so cool
I think I understand why the designs look so appealing to me. They were allowed to look rough and weird. Sure modern pokemon have some appeal but most of them are just an animal + a gimmick without the weirdness that makes a design fantastical.
you lost me at Shiftry but brought me back with Torkoal
the sheer disrespect of Shiftry rofl
Who let this guy cook
28:22
I think one has to analyze the extra yellow lines and stripes not just as "more of the star patterns", but as battle scars from other pokemon. Sharpedos are said to be extremely agressive after all.
However yeah, it really took away from the clean and sleek-ness of regular Sharpedo.
I wonder if Registeel was made to look so alien compared to its siblings on purpose? This is before Regigigas established itself as the trio leader, and I always kinda saw it as the Suicune to their Raikou and Entei. Especially since you need Regirock and Regice to encounter it in the first place, and steel is super effective against both of them. It's weird futuristic design establishes a degree of superiority compared to its more primitive counterparts, which I actually quite like.
All your criticisms against Mega Swampert are exactly the reasons I love it xD The design definitely leans into its weird stat distribution for a water type, and just says "Let's just go punch everyone, that's sounds like a good day."
Treecko was my first starter and, while i have always chosen grass starters, I've grown farther and farther away from loving Treecko's line over the years myself. Sceptile supposed to be a sleek, fast, agile ninja forest ranger lizard that defends plants and helps them grow... and it just looks awkward and overdesigned. Maybe it would work better with different stats and lore but as is, just no. Treecko is kinda fine but just ok. Grovyle is a perfect middle stage between 2 mediocre stages.
It's bad enough that despite being my first pokemon, i honestly think Sceptile might be my second or possibly last place pick for a grass starter.
How anyone can have anything against treecko is beyond me
I'd make a salad out of it, it looks very nutritious
Love the series! ♥
If my kalkulations are corect it will take Skyen around 45 shirts to get thru gen 4.
58:30 Metagross looks rocky rather than steely because it's MAGNETITE ORE. It's not refined, processed metal, it's in its raw form.
I think milotic should have gotten the Fairy type as well
I feel like the in game design of the treeko like is a bit unfortunate, but the ANIME depiction of ash’s treeko line is one of the coolest Pokemon I ever seen 🤣
Finally getting to Gen4, aka the best one.
Sorry if this comes off as "erm actually 🤓" but Lileep and Cradily are not plants and are actually based on animals called crinoids, also known as sea lillies. These critters are part of the echinoderm clade, making them relatives to sea stars, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers. Fossil crinoids actually go way back to the Ordovician about 488 million years ago! These fossil Pokémon hold a special place in my heart because, as you said, their plant-iness makes them look quite alien! If you've ever seen footage of sea lillies or feather stars then this makes even more sense. Crinoids themselves are incredibly plant like, with a root-like structure called the holdfast (hence the Root Fossil where they come from), a stem, and petal-like appendages that pick food particles out of the water column. Lileep and Cradily capture all these aspects perfectly, and I really appreciate them for that!
Sorry again for the pseudo-lecture, I just want to set the record straight!
Also, I think it's fun that Lileep and Cradily would, phylogenetically, be related to the Staryu line, Pyukumuku, the Mareanie line, and Pincurchin!
I know your Jirachi short is already filled with comments about it, but Jirachi DOES have a unique element: When it uses its move Doom Desire, the line on its belly opens up to reveal a third eye. I wish the 3rd eye was more prominent in Jirachi's design, but it IS there.
do u plan on making reviews about the paradox pokemons?
i mean, they are, designwise, a new look into the old designs. to me, it would make sense to also talk iron hands while talking about hariyama.
I did comment the same thing on other video, sorry, doing it again because I think it makes more sense to ask it in a newer video.
Gardevoir line is actually supposed to be male-skewed, as seen by the gender ratio of Ralts in gen 3 games as well as it being based on castratos and similar concepts from theater and choirs and such, going up to Kirlia being a ballet dancer and Gardevoir, again, filling the castrato role but now as an adult. I suppose Gallade was meant to be another branch-off of theater as the gallant male lead of a play and/or hero in a novel.
It's a shame Flygon didn't get a mega, according to the designers they just couldn't come up with one.
I find it strange that in the generation for weather mechanics, the introductory gimmick mon for weather doesn't have a sandstorm version, and instead has a wind-implying form for hail despite sun and rain having properly defined and portrayed forms.
I'm ready for your gen 4 hottakes at the moment..🔥🔥
I'm aware I only just asked about doing a series about Digimon designs, but I just realized I'd be far more interested in Monster Hunter designs
Also remember that Registeel does the nazi salute in one of the 4th gen sprites
Would really have loved if you included Roaring Moon when you talked about the Bagon-line. I'm curious to hear your thoughts about Roaring Moon.
Adore this series!
YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS. DRIFLOON SOON!!!!!!!
Now that we're three gens into this analysis, have you found any new favorites? designs you wouldn't have expected to enjoy, since they so rarely appear, or pokemon that do much better when given this kind of scrutiny?
Could you repost the videos on Gen 1 & Gen 2 pkmn in this Shorts channel of yours?
Justice for Sceptile line
Are you going to do compilations like this for Gen 1 and 2?
16:28 Makuhita and Hariyama are my fav Pikachu look alikes. I don’t know why but every time I’ve had one it’s been so unnecessarily badass.
2:43 I hate mega swampert, not with a burning passion anymore, but I still hate it.
But I made peace with it.
If you want a hulking amphibious monster, get a seismatoad from Gen 5, it works better there.
Luvdisc exists to carry your early game in Drayano hacks, obviously
Oh this means my favorit turtle will have their day soon
Can you put up gen 1 and 2 compilations?

They are on his 1st channel
You watch tbskyen pokemon for interesting character design breakdown with some interesting facts include
I watch tbskyen pokemon video to hear the funny pronunciation of the names
We are not the same
Why need a spray bottle for Blaziken? 🤔
Anyways,good video here.
We do not tolerate Treecko hate lol
No mention of the creepy stomach eye on jirachi?
Finally, some respect for my boi Claydol
i thought trapinch was a turtle this whole time omg. also shiny flygon best shiny ever perhaps?
1 second into the video and I am already fuming
I do think that spoink and grumpig are jokes about pearls before swine, actually. It’s a common enough expression even outside of the Bible (I didn’t know it was from the Bible actually!)
