Fun fact, that 11,640 damage is before counting the blood loss, which will vary wildly depending on your HP, since it's percentage based. The exact reason why the game clears the attack array when the small dog does that one specific attack is owed to some complicated interactions with the behavior data for the various dog enemies, which would've taken quite a bit longer to explain. Simply put, it's caused by the small dog's behavior data being unable to account for the large attack correctly, so the game mistakenly thinks there's no valid attack in the array and clears it. If the small dog data were moved to a new index, it would see the invalid attack data in index 0, but notice the still valid attack data in index 1 and not clear the array.

@@marhawkman303 The BFG tendrils in Doom 2016? The BFG shoots a big green energy ball, and when it gets near an enemy, the ball shoots a continuous arcing lightning-beam at the enemy until the ball itself either flies past or hits something. When you open the weapon selection wheel, the movement of everything slows down, but damage doesn't, so the BFG ball takes longer to go away while its tendrils deal damage at the same rate. This is basically THE speedrun trick for boss fights, and sometimes it can actually be more rewarding to shoot past a bulky enemy than to hit them with the ball.

I dunno what it is about ER but that attitude is particularly prevalent compared to previous FS games. If you dare point out something that is clearly broken or jank, you get dogpiled by the armchair heroes because Miyazaki-sama doesn't make mistakes, you're just bad. A game this massive and complex is bound to have bugs, and FS is still actively bug and balance fixing. But nah, game was a 10/10 flawless masterpiece on release.
I think the reason people are reacting this way so much with Elden Ring, is, well, it is jank. At least compared to Bloodborne or Sekiro. Don't get me wrong, it's an amazing game, but damn at the Bethesda/CDPR style openworld jank so many are trying to pretend is not happening.

That's so wild! It's crazy how easy it is to forget how much math is going on behind the scenes in games, and how FAST. As a player it feels like simple cause and result, but the console has to blast through these flow charts so fast!
IMO if you want to learn programming, make a game. Having something fun to work on, even if you're not aspiring to be a professional game designer, is the best way to actually grasp abstract code concepts because you now have a context for *WHY* they exist as opposed to someone just saying "this is how class inheritance works" and expecting a person hearing that the first time to be able to understand.
There are quite a few games where when you take damage from (or parry/dodge/etc) an attack, the game internally flags that particular attack as unable to hit again should you contact the hitbox later in the animation. It's normally hard to spot without knowing what to look for, but... One of the easiest examples I know of is from Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. A massive monster called Ukanlos has one move where it digs through the ground directly towards you and causes damage on contact, but the entire (and rather lengthy) sequence is internally counted as a SINGLE attack which means that if you just raise a shield and block it, any further collisions with the hitbox are ignored.
@@Stratelier Certainly depends on the game, in Vindictus there seems to be multiple triggers for an attack over it's sequence that forces players to either dodge outta the way or continue blocking the attack if possible, it discourages "block once hammer away" kind of strats and makes you work with your team properly. Also for Ryan, even just getting into modding should be enough for some people, allows you to get an idea for what goes on in the code and you can build your code around a set example and get similar results. A lot of "optimization" mods typically start in this fashion, allowing the modder to see why things are happening and then modifying or changing code to do the same thing but more efficiently, a prime example of this would be Skyrim's optimization mods as well as Stellaris' communities attempt at centralizing data sets to better expand upon modding capabilities(in other words another form of optimization).

Progamming in general actually. Game design is made a lot easier with the use of engines (predesigned modular code frameworks) and then becomes harder again as the game gets progressively more complex. Programming always has a huge element of challenge to it and no game is perfect. One of my favorite games, battletech, seems like a bugless game. The irony is that it has a minor case of a particularly severe bug that is invisible and doesn't cause issues until you mod it. The issue, called a memory leak, basically means that every time the game loads assets and unloads then it fails to release some of the memory. This compounds to eventually cause a CTD, freeze, or BSOD and mods make it exponentially more dramatic the larger the mod is. Basically, imagine memory as a work table. Every time you make something you put tools and supplies on your table. Except the catch is once your done you cut off 5% of your table (or 10-15% for complex projects). By the time you hit your 5th project you will have less than 50% of your starting working space. At some point you won't have enough space left to work with and the table falls or 'crashes'.This is basically what happens to the computers memory in that game and the only workaround is a periodic restart (starting with a whole new table).
Size os a problem with many more things that you'd imagine. Even visual novels must go to great lengths to compress their data to make sure they're not unduly large.
i like seeing these game development sort of breakdowns giving players a look into how the code functions in gameplay its very interesting and helps understand a lot with the game although some things may be bugs its nice to visually see a hitbox for instance and to understand when an attack is broken causing a double hit.
You know, I really thought something was up when I saw that their attacks stacked on bleed so quickly and the dev part of my brain went "That just feels like the script for the hitbox isn't exiting/breaking after I've already been hit" but I dismissed it as my imagination as I didn't think From Soft could make such an error, because it's an error that I've made several times in my own projects; but alas, to err is human, and let us not forget that From Software are also humans capable of minute oversights that can slip through the cracks of such a large game. I still love this game though.

It's a misunderstanding to call it input reading, it's actually animation reading. The game doesn't detect you pressing a button to heal and preemptively begin heal punishing you before you even start, the AI can read your current animation and rushes to punish you when it registers you're actively performing the heal animation.

Souls fans can be… annoying to deal with. It’s like they see criticism as a threat to their very lives.
@@robocannon2712 yeah, I don't know why it's so much worse this time around. I personally feel like some of the later game areas are jumping in difficulty a bit too much in terms of enemy health/damage compared to the area just before, but God forbid if I bring it up in any way 🙄

That's so wild! It's crazy how easy it is to forget how much math is going on behind the scenes in games, and how FAST. As a player it feels like simple cause and result, but the console has to blast through these flow charts so fast!
not only did i learn about the game, i also learned about arrays, optimization, hitboxes, and programming. amazing stuff
@@Ryan-nm8pw Thanks for the advice Ryan

These videos make me appreciate how difficult game design really is.
@@oceanbytez847 I like the table analogy
i like seeing these game development sort of breakdowns giving players a look into how the code functions in gameplay its very interesting and helps understand a lot with the game although some things may be bugs its nice to visually see a hitbox for instance and to understand when an attack is broken causing a double hit.

From the grace, you walk 10 feet to the edge, aim at the crow manually, hit it with an arrow, the crow gets pissed and charges headfirst into the chasm trying to reach you and forgetting it can fly. Then you do two rolls back to the grace, reset, repeat until God Tier.
There's videos of it on youtube, just look up something like 'Elden Ring best rune farm' and it'll be one of the top results.
EDIT: Oh yeah, the crow gives you over 13,000 runes each time it jumps into the chasm. More with the Golden Scarab and eating gold chicken feet.
@@joshuagonzalez2594 its got 2 ways in. One is in the consecrated snowfield and the other is to do the white mask varre quest which is the maidenless guy. You can get there after defeating godrick finding him in liurnia at the rose church
This explains a lot. I was scared at how much damage these dogs do. Even over leveled they do a lot of damage.
The dog-type enemies have to be my least favorite enemy in Elden Ring so far other than the big birds, they're not fun to fight at all or anything, they're just really annoying. Caelid is essentially just your worst nightmare with those crows and huge dogs around. They dodge too much, they run and tackle you, they bite and come in groups, it's awful
The huge dogs arent so bad, except for the attack where they slide on the floor and you have to dodge a couple times or get snapped up. why can dogs do the worm, idk
use a colossal weapon on the dogs they stagger in like 2 hits
'The dog-type enemies have to be my least favorite enemy in Elden Ring' welcome to souls games 😂 dogs have been a pain in the ass in every single fromsoft game they have been in. That said, I can't help but get the impression Miyazaki Sat down and thought to himself, how can I make the one enemy nobody likes even more annoying?.
Those huge crows are the WORST, specially in Mogh's palace
For me its those damn 1000 armed weird nobles tbat spit poison and flail about everywhere
Nice video, I found it more interesting learning a bit about how games are made and how attacks work in the background. Thanks!
0:15 **for that we first need to talk about parallel universes**
Glad to know it's a bug, pretty surprising getting a good chunk of my health drained when I was at around 40 vig the first time I fought the dog
As a former programmer, this is the kind of QA I would've loved! Is this your full time job or do you work as a programmer as well?
I’m so used to enemies just having one shots that I assumed it was supposed to be like that.
what da dog doin
Can you talk about the ai input reading next. I think it would be an interesting subject to deep dive into and to see best ways to avoid some of the enemies smoking you because of it.
Honestly once I figured out certain actions from me provoke a punish attempt from enemies, I know to play around it for the most part. As in, "I can't safely heal unless this godskin asshole is in an attack animation or he'll toss a fireball my way, so I have to bait him to attack and get distance"
@@MattR8605 yeah it’s a good mechanic but it happening every single time can get annoying. I fought one of the dudes and trying to bait an attack and get distance all at once made the fight feel like a chore. Too much micromanagement. In bloodborne they had some ai input reading but it never felt as bad as this. IDK it’s a fun game but some of the stuff in it felt unnecessary to add just for some more difficulty.
@@kitzi4470 I mean, the general sentiment is understandable, but the main, advertised dish of this game is supposed to be it's genuine difficulty, if they just left out sophisticated methods of ruining your day we'd be stuck with bullet sponges.
@@slyseal2091 Yeah I don’t view input reading as actual difficulty. Granted I probably wouldn’t mind it if some of these bosses had less health or if the rolling felt better and quick. Like I said idk games fun but it feels like they’ve just stacked too much against the player for a “relaxed ride” of a game as they’ve advertised. I knew it was gonna be difficult when I got into the game just would be nice if some of the difficulty was similar to the difficulty in bloodborne or dark souls where they had little to none input reading.
It's a misunderstanding to call it input reading, it's actually animation reading. The game doesn't detect you pressing a button to heal and preemptively begin heal punishing you before you even start, the AI can read your current animation and rushes to punish you when it registers you're actively performing the heal animation.
This is the only enemy I fought in this area and I just thought I was super under-leveled for it. Good to know those ruins are just bugged until next patch. Thanks, Zullie!

I love these type of videos that break down the code aswell
I'm not sure if I should be proud that the players are finding and making their own bugfixes or ashamed that the devs are being so slow on it themselves
One person being faster is not a surprise. There's no oversight. No committees, no jealous coworkers to be careful of. No office politics. One warrior in a jungle can be a lot scarier than an army you can clearly see.
This person has no oversight and this is their hobby I'm absolutely not surprised that they get it done faster. From is a Japanese company and you know how Japan loves its rules and customs. Who knows how annoying it is to get something this small done lol. Not every employee is a Miyazaki lol.
I paused the game with the "menu explanation" trick and this dude was about to bite me, oh my God the nightmare fuel this dog gave me when I returned to my game ....
since you cannot be invaded unless in multiplayer, i don’t know why From doesn’t just add an actual pause option when playing solo. it’s kinda pointless really.
@@mkv2718 yeah it's really dumb that they didn't put it in ER when Sekiro had a pause button, and games like Nioh also have pause buttons. They don't even have to let me mess with my equipment while it's paused, literally just stop the game please. And no one better reply to this and say "Just quit out" because that isn't the same and is still no excuse
I assume they don't want people pause buffering/potentially exploiting pausing in combat to catch your breath, but I never played Sekiro so who knows
@@jeremyabbott4537 In nioh you had to go into the menu then pause the game, then after unpausing you can't input dodges or attacks for some frames. It's not exploitable. They have no excuse.
Sekiro pauses the game like any other action game by obscuring the entire screen and allowing you to change your items and abilities. I doubt anyone paused the game everytime they had to parry something
This dog is back but in the DLC. I didn't die to it. But i noticed it did MASSIVE damage
Glad to see I wasn’t just crazy when I kept getting absolutely destroyed by those damn things 🥴
More bug than dog
oh, thank god!! finally someone explaining why this doggo's bleed is so damn stoopid
It's not just the dog's mouth, but each tooth has a separate attack.
