If u are trying to distinguish between an Evo 8.5 & 9 Td05, but cant take the turbo out, and the alphanumerics are hard to read or worn off, i find that the best way to tell the Compressor Housing apart is the shape of the Block section that the Size is stamped on. On the Evo 9 the section is a perfect square. On the Evo 8.5 the section has slightly Rounded/Cut Corners, and is arched at the bottom and kinda bends around the Inlet
Very useful video. I've just discover that my old turbo was an hybrid between evo 8 (compressor side) and evo 9 (or 8 mr) for the hot side. In any case, the evo 9 turbo represent the best choice in term of maximum air flow (and than power) without any loss in term of spool.
Thanks for this video! Helped to know the difference between the two turbos, and thanks for the video on the different recirculating valves. Did not know the previous owner of my Evo 8 threw on a valve from an Evo 9.
@Boosted Films ive got a question, 1) what bhp @ standard do the evos comes from factory? 2) what bhp can each of them 3 turbos peak out at with bolt 3" exhuast? 3) what psi max can u peak it at? 4) finally what rpm do all 3 spool full boost at?
1. Oficially 280, up to 300 i believe, except FQ models, they had higher numbers. 2. It depends by many factors, how is exhaust made, and by flow of the whole exhaust, so if you chose 3” you can go up to 500hp, but i believe turbo did not get that power, so you are forced to change turbo and other components connected with increasing power. For point 3 and 4 you need to find exact turbo map… but MHI turbos are hard to find, but good luck. And then you must k ow how to read turbo maps - for get that knowledge i recommend to check the video by D4A “all about turbos”
Something I knowticed between the 9.8 & 10.5 is on the 9.8 on the hot side the impeller housing has larger port to the exhaust exposing more impeller than the 10.5.. Any idea why ?
Hey I bought an evo 6-8 turbo smart internal actuator , for my evo 4 turbo , it fits, but now I want to upgrade to a evo 9 turbo can u use the same actuator ? I hope so
Can't believe the new civic type R only has a small single scroll TD04 turbo , I don't think it is capable of making 340whp power, should of made it at least a 16g turbo with Direct Injection technology would have been a good power plant.
Well good video most is correct....but not all. My 2005 evo 8 turbo is a 9.8T and only 1 single wast gate valve gate not 2. Could be that the 9.8T from the video is a evo 7???
So the 2005 Evo 8 Hotside is the same exact Hotside as on the Evo 9? I would like to confirm this so that while my Evo IX turbo is installed, I can have the 10.5 hotside from my 2005 Evo 8 turbo cleaned up and cerakoted so that when I rebuild my Evo IX turbo I can swap housings. To save down time ya dig!?
@@BoostedFilms awesome... I just started taking it apart. I bought a 20G Comp cover & 7+7 Wheel with a drop in 9 blade turbine wheel. I'm still waiting on the rebuild kit, so in the meantime I'm going to take the 10.5 from my 05 turbo and have that one cleaned up. I plan on using this setup until I build my bottom end next spring.
Hi! I have a turbo on my lancer evo 5 with number: TD05HR-16G6-10.5T and i need a new wastegate and oil returnline but i dont know which turbo i should by for? 8 or 9 turbo? Would have been awesome with some help from you guys!. Btw really good video! // Tobias
You may have misunderstood. I’m not saying there is a “evo 8.5” car. Here in the USA, evo 8’s were 03-05 model years and evo9’s were 06 model year. I simply referred to the 10.5t evo 8 turbo (2005 model year) as the “evo 8.5 turbo” to differentiate it from the 9.8t evo8 turbo and the 10.5 evo 9 turbo.
great video, gonna use this to check what kind of turbo is on my evo

So basically you have a 2005 Evo 8 turbo
Great informative video for new soon-to-be Evo owners, Thank you very much for all your work on this video I learned a lot.
Thanks man. On my way to be an Evo owner
Ive just become a evo5 with a forged 8 engine 😁

Amazing video, very informative! 👍🏼
Really informative video man! Thanks!
I would like to know which turbo spools the fastest out of the 8,9 and 10
Hi rob wondering if you would do a comparison between the evo 9 turbo and the MHI TF06-18K It bolts on with all stock evo 9 lines
Any difference in the size or shape of the exhaust turbine between the three or is it simply just a larger housing?
Very good work! Thank you for this video 🤗
In case anybody is interested evo X has the evo 9 divided flap wastegate opening.
Here's a long shot can I swap the 9 housing into a 8 core?? Like the hot and cold side??
They actually made a 10.5 hotside with the dual flapper similar to your 9.8 hotside in this video. Just an fyi.
Daniel Sandoval interesting... Never knew that. I would like to see one
Boosted Films , I'll have to find my pictures. I have an fp green 73hta with the mhi 10.5 housing that has dual flappers.
@@BoostedFilms evolution 6.5 TME is a 10.5 turbine housing with the dual flapper.
I got the 9.8t turbo and still made 375whp
i got 9.8t turbo and made 384 awhp
chevron32 nice what mods did you have ?
full exhaust and e85. stock cams
The question is, On what Dyno?
@@chevron32 what full exhaust brand ? What is e85 broo

All 2005's in the USA came with a 10.5T cold side. A prior owner probably swapped on a 9.8T.
great vid man.
Can we get a injector removal for Evo 8/9
So the 2005 Evo 8 Hotside is the same exact Hotside as on the Evo 9?

Rei-Sen•Evo yes. 05 hotside is the same as evo9.

What are the A/R ratios of the turbine housings
nice video man
How can I tell the difference from an evo 8 turbo from evo 6?
Do you know if the Evo 8.5 (with the single flapper) exhaust housing fits the Evo 8 (with the twin flapper) O2 sensor housing?
vrtigo the 02 housings should be interchangeable
ive got a damaged evo 8 turbo with a 10.5 hotside, could i use a evo 9 core cartridge and fit my evo 8 hot & cold side too the evo 9 core?
It should be interchangeable.
Between the 2 evo 8 turbos, are there any performance differences?
minimal, but yes. 10.5 hotside is better than 9.8
Does the 7 and 8 use the same turbo ??

I think the evo 9 turbo oil line and wastegate actuator would work for you. But i'm not 100% sure you are JDM.
I have an evo 5 also. Would the turbo from an evo 9 be a worthwhile upgrade? Plug and play?
If your evo 5 actuator is rusted out, put an evo 8 actuator on it. Direct bolt on and it comes with the revised shield on the rod.
thank you very much
will the 9 turbo match up with an Evo 5 turbo elbow?
Delta BoXeR unfortunately I know nothing about Evo’s that are not USDM 8/9...
Can a evo 8 turbo fit on a evo 6?
yes, plug & play job
Thinking if buying and evo can anybody tell me the differences between the 2005 evo 8 gsr and the 2006 evo 9 gsr?
Bryan Sevilla if you can afford it, get the Evo 9. You get mivec and the better turbo
Hey thank you so much man ! Yeah I found a evo 9 for a very good deal. Keep up the good work man love your vids!
Glooks fam
How hard are these to fit on a 1G or a 2G motor?
DSM? Not worth it. Basically will not work. Totally different.
👍
Can I swap my evo 7 turbo for an evo 8 or 9 turbo?
Rob M not sure. We have no evo 7’s in the USA.
yes. as long as you swap the lines as well
Update: I went with the evo 8 MR install, haven't yet done the tune.
so witch is best Turbo
Jose Salas Evo 9
Boosted Films oh okay well I have 2005 evo 9 what's your Insta I fallow you
