Natu/Xatu is a personal favorite of mine, possibly just because green happens to be a favorite color of mine or maybe because I actually found a shiny one in my original copy of Silver. Ever since it's been a staple for my teams anytime I revisit Johto, even if mostly only to learn the fly HM after it evolves... or if I'm using fixed stats, also giving it hidden power psychic for STAB before Kanto.
It really is a shame about it move pool though. I can sort of see what they were going for not giving it confusion or psybeam to help put emphasis on future sight as its main gimmick, but while interesting in concept, that move is absolutely lousy in execution, and at the very least it needed to be way stronger for how awkward it is to use.

Lorelei's Slowbro has a terrible moveset in Gen 1 though, it's really only her Lapras that's a threat. lol But it does suck how awful Natu got it. It does feel weird how it doesn't get at least Psybeam. But I don't mind you have to go out of your way to find Pokemon, since it adds to finding new areas to explore and rewards exploration.

      @Surgemaster2012 Рік тому

@@SquallLionhart409 True. And there's no denying Slowbro is a great Pokemon in Gen 1, however one issue with the game is how it often punishes the use of slower Pokemon with how Wrap and status work, not to mention the high critical hits based on speed. Auto crit Razor Leafs, Speedy Thunderbolts and such can take care of it. II suppose it can do damage with STAB of its two typings, but you can manage that with status to avoid damage or with the optiions above.

    • @SquallLionhart409
      @SquallLionhart409 Рік тому +3

@@Surgemaster2012 Slowbro is pretty tanky, so it can survive quite a bit. Critical hits are a detriment to a pokemon that has setup in gen 1, so Slowbro appreciates the low rate. Amnesia doubling your special means Slowbro flat beats most speedy thunderbolts. This is specifically in-game where you have a level/stat exp advantage OR use items. A Jolteon switching in on a Slowbro using Amnesia actually loses if it doesn't get a crit on one of its first two attacks. The problem comes from those autocrit razor leaf attacks. The only upside there is that all pokemon that know razor leaf are weak to psychic.

Would love to see the wall bonks vs date recorded plot in the future. See if you improve with time! Also with the percentage of time in battle statistic it could be possible to create an "effective time" for each pokemon. I know you didn't like how clustered all the pokemon were in this series I would guess that it is mostly because so much of the game is cake walk regardless of the pokemon chosen the effective time might spread that distribution out a fair bit.

It’s been a debate if Meganium is actually bad or if it was just given a bad hand by being put in a region that is hard on grass types, so I’d love to see how Meganium would do in Kanto. I think for the sprites you could probably use the Silver sprites from Spaceworld 99 as they’re unique and bizarrely seem to have been made with the Super Game Boy palette in mind as there’s some weird shading despite Spaceworld 99 having the same palette as the final mostly.

Natu's movepool surprisingly bad, but I'm sure they gave it better moves in future gens! Let's see...
In Gen 3, they gave it Wish at Level 30... and that's it by Level up. And although the TM's availaable are a BIT bette, you're only getting Thief as a reliable Special move again until the second half of the game.
What about Gen 4? Well, it looks like they gave Natu a bunch of moves to work with. Problem is, stuff like Lucky Chant, Me First, and Power Swap are not your typical go-to moves in a solo run. Ominous Wind is a nice addition... at Level 39. You still only get Psychic as a STAB Special move by level up though. But hey, at least the TM for Shadow Ball is useful now as a coverage option! AND you get Grass Knot as your early game special move. That's not exactly great though...
Even in Sword/Shield, its latest appearence, Natu is mostly relying on Peck and Night Shade until it gets Psychic, which thankfully is now at Level 35.
Much as I like this line, it isn't particularly good in a solo setting. It's a bit better as a member of a full team and in competitive thanks to tools like Baton Pass, Magic Bounce, and Wish, but for solo runs it's pretty bleh.

Looking into the future is basically what Natu&Xatu do with their life
imo Natu should learn it even sooner
as type effectiveness doesn't apply it could have been useful against Jasmine ? but more so against Pryce and his piloswine
Natu could probably by pass the blizzard problem the same way it bypassed the rollout problem
Also there was some time were Nightshade could be useful.
Like, it could two shot the gengar in the first Morty fight (don't know how the second one went) while peck was a three hit.

Another one of those Pokémon I've liked from a design perspective but never got around to utilising. Natu was always a distinct bird and I hope it does well in this Johto challenge. The opening line about badly designed doesn't bode well.
0:39 - Huh... never really thought of it like that. Typically if a stronger trainer used a Pokémon, particularly if it was their Ace, I would try and avoid using that Pokémon. Then again, kid me often had his team assembled before the 3rd gym so...
3:12 - Giga Drain is... odd choice for it to learn. I wonder what the reasoning for that is. I suppose it is totem based and they were usually made of wood (though some could be made of Rock... the line seems like the type that would fit Ancient Power). Honestly, I'm surprised how fast Natu/Xatu are.
    5:45 - The Flying type Gym's most powerful move; a Ground-type attack.
7:39 - Gen 2 does like it's Flying types; introduced more in that Gen than any other type.
10:05 - I always thought that was pretty interesting, facing an opponent who has stone evolved their Pokémon early. It actually makes in-game sense unlike Lance and his early evolving Dragonites.
14:49 - So Circle here isn't easily confused... but certainly likes to sleep.
16:25 - It's been a while since I watched a Crystal Solo Challenge of yours so it's surprise to see Nob with official art here. Cool to see, particularly knowing why said trainer is named Nob.
18:54 - Oh no, that is tragic. Losing to Pryce of all people. You truly did pay for the Electrode incident (that also made me feel guilty; very dark moment).
20:40 - Confuse Ray and Night Shade is a nice combo for dealing with a defensive juggernaut like Steelix.
21:27 - Even if they did, they would have likely slapped it on at Level 60. They seemed to really want to stick with that new move per 10 levels thing they had going. Also, despite the abundance of new Flying types they introduced, they added only one new Flying type attack in Gen 2... and it was Lugia's signature move.
25:46 - The Natu versus Xatu showdown was surprisingly one-sided. Not quite the epic encounter you'd expect from a battle against your evolved counterpart.
27:54 - Given you haven't really used Peck since learning Psychic, I'm rather curious as to why you got rid of Confuse Ray instead. It seems like the confusion status is very effective against you here and using Confuse Ray could be a good gamble move against the Pokémon you can't one-hit.
33:13 - The final test; a random Parasect! I just felt the timing here was hilarious.
36:28 - The amount of Critical Hits across a whole playthrough seem a lot lower than I would have expected. Interesting to hear about the amount of battles fought (not quite sure the amount of frames is worth tracking but the other data is interesting).
38:36 - Well I've been ignoring Future Sight for too long then because that is an amazing concept. Being able to use the first Pokémon's lower stats against the stronger Pokémon that follows is amazing.
41:58 - Strange to be able to consider Steel type Jasmine trivial with a Psychic/Flying type of all things.
45:33 - A bit sad to have two of "my" Pokémon listed as bad Pokémon but it will be cool to see their solo challenges. Best of luck with them!

I wonder if there's some more future sight tech that could be used to make Karen possible at a lower level.
Set up some future sight damage against the comparatively weak Murkrow, locking in the damage based on its stats (only 42 base special defense) then knock it out and let the Houndoom take the hit. Presumably, this could make things less consistent elsewhere though.
It's such an odd move mechanically, makes it interesting to theorycraft around.

Just starting the video and cheering on little Circle but I did want to mention there is an interesting edge case with Future Sight. Healing items in Gen II are no longer retroactive like in Gen I, so Future Sight can potentially be timed to finish off a Pokemon that's on low health without triggering the use of a healing item. If you know you're going to hit a Pokemon into Future Sight KO range on that turn, you essentially get to blow past the healing threshold. It's definitely an edge case scenario though and pretty hard to actually make work (and as a result, might not be worth the slot on the moveset for obvious reasons), but you never know, it might come up some day. Now back to the video!

    Before watching:
Interesting one. The stats aren‘t too bad. Decent speed and special attack for a first stage pokemon. And psychic and flying are nice types that give a lot of benefits. Peck and Leer to start will make the early game rather easy since you‘ll have STAB. Yes, from the weak physical side, but still, STAB early on will help. And Nightshade will give you consistent damage against any Rock pokemon.
The mid game will be trickier, since you don‘t have many great moves and coverage. Once you get Future Sight there will probably be some interesting strats where you have to prolong the battle until the move can hit. All in all, the mid game will be rough.
Biggest problem in that phase will be Jasmine and Karen‘s Umbreon and Houndoom. Those will cause a lot of trouble.
And then late game will be easy until Blue and Red which will cause huge issues, especially Snorlax.
My expectation is that this one will be rather difficult. A lot of very easy fights but the road blocks will be TOUGH and really add a lot of time!
    After watching:
About as expected. Maybe a bit worse than I thought. I figured „Future Sight“ might be more useful in the mid game until you got psychic. Else it‘s about as expected. Middle of the game is rough and Umbreon is a problem.
The move set is really frustratingly bad. And for no apparent reason. There are plenty of moves you could just give Natu without any additional explanation. Psybeam, Drill Peck, Confusion, Fly…
Why it didn‘t get any of those is really a mystery to me.

    @1stclasswarior Рік тому +1

I'm currently at the Morty portion of the video as I start typing this, and I'm here to offer more help and advice.
I think you made an early moveset mistake. You know you're going to be using mostly physical moves for this run, and you start out early with Leer. Your only flying type option is Peck, which you held onto for a long time, and then you picked up Return and Swift. With this in mind, you could have chosen to keep Leer and not learn Teleport.
Miltank was a great example of this in action. Swift and Return didn't do all that much damage against Miltank. In cases in which your total TTK is quite high (roughly 4 hits or more) then Leer will give you a whole bunch of value as it will result in less total turns required to knock a Pokemon out, thus saving you HP and PP. For example, if you need 5 hits to knock something out, then you can use Leer and that could reduce their DEF enough that they now need 3 hits. With Leer included, that's a 4TK compared to a 5HK when you straight up attack, which means that's one less hit you're taking. With Return being such a big part of your run, you could have gotten so much Mileage out of this move.
Another (super tiny) thing to point out is that, just before taking on Morty, you ate a Sand Attack to the face, but then gambled on missing with Return, while under the effects of Curse. If you had missed, taken a hit, and then taken Curse damage, that's a reset. Swift would have been much safer. If a lower BP move will finish off a low-HP target, it's generally better to use that weaker move you don't click much to close out that KO, as it saves you PP on your main attacking move, and in this case, has the added benefit of circumventing Sand Attack.
Your struggles against Umbreon are an example of how a moveset of Return/Swift/Leer/Psychic may have been better than Night Shade, which falls off in how useful it is the higher the levels and/or base HP of the opponent.

A metric that I'd love to see for each run is non-Rare Candy XP. That is, how much XP did the Pokemon gain through battle alone?
For me, it's a far more interesting number than final level, removing the level-up group effect on how much training a Pokemon had to do in order to beat the game. Bonus points if the metric distinguishes between raw total non-RC XP and XP above mandatory XP from minimum battles. I'd love the idea of being able to say "this Pokemon needed Y XP above minimum battles to beat the game", with the potential to comment on efficiency about when and how that XP was gained. Bonus bonus points if the time in non-mandatory battles is also tracked as a metric, allowing you to say "this Pokemon needed Y XP above minimum battles to beat the game, which added Z to its game time". I imagine that would be a little trickier to add though, given that you'd need to internally label which battles are mandatory and which battles are not, whereas with XP the mandatory XP could just be a set variable based on out of game calculation.
Tracking Rare Candy XP (and average XP per Rare Candy used) could also be fun for commenting on how efficiently the Rare Candies are used in that run - higher XP from Rare Candies means more bang for your buck. This would be more of a novelty metric than a serious one to track though.

I had no idea Future Sight worked like that! What a cool strat! =3
There's actually a Pokémon escape room challenge that made use of Natu not being able to learn Fly. It forced you to evolve it into Xatu so you could use Fly to escape. So hey, at least there's that.

Honestly, its SpA isn't THAT much better than its Atk. Like, ~33 points at Lv.85 is a fair bit (around 18%) but it's not super lopsided like the 40% higher BASE SpA would suggest.
Interestingly, Xatu has two big additions: Hyper Beam and Fly. Considering how long you kept Peck, I suspect that might make it a rather different playthrough. (Plus, you know, higher stats across the board.) A huge demerit, though, is it doesn't get Psychic until *_Level 65_* which is mighty awful.
Unrelated, it's possibly something you've heard before and you just don't care, I dunno, but Kanto has a soft "a" sound. 🙂 I debated mentioning this, but figured it'd be better to just say it and let you do with that what you will...
