First we looked at Lavender Town, then Cinnabar Island, then the Kanto Power Plant, then Mt. Moon...so let's check out probably the most unique place in the original games: the Safari Zone.

Fun fact about the zoo. The fossil pokemon is whichever fossil you didn't choose in Mt. Moon.
That is actually really neat!
You should submit this to Blueboyphin
@@ryangonzalez3225this really is not obscure
Shut the front door
What happens if you Brock through walls and never picked up a fossil? Does the zoo default to Omanyte or Kabuto?
"I have not heard anyone saying that Pinsir is their favorite Pokemon"
My guy does not watch Big Yellow confirmed.
Ace Trainer Liam Joke pass it on.
I was thinking this too
Not me soloing Ruby with a Pinsir hahaha
Not my favorite but I def prefer it over scizor and scyther
"and honestly [Tauros] isn't too bad..."
understatement of the century
Safari Zone was pretty much THE competitive hunting ground. Tauros, Exeggecutor, Chansey, Dragonite, Rhydon
Dragonite is not what I'd call OU viable back then.
And with Agility+Wrap gone last I checked, it's poopy in UU.
@@1stCallipostle
I mean like very literally when I say "was"
Talking like the official Pokemon tourney scene back in the late 90s. Dragonite did show then, and not really any bans on moves like things like Smogon try to implement
In og red and blue you could also catch chansey and syther in the wild in route 14. In the grass you need to cut to access
Tohjo Falls would be a cool one to explore when you hit Gen II. It was always one of those "Oh yeah, it exists" places in Pokemon.
That's a fun idea
This please
I think that's how this dude shines. Like liminal spaces in video games.
I’m obsessed with these videos! I would love to see you do the seafoam islands, as I’ve always loved them. You can even catch Jynx there in the Japanese blue version! Ice & water are my favorite types too.
Or maybe do a video about all the Pokémon you can get by fishing? I feel like that could be interesting.
Me too!
Good take
Sea foam Island would definitely be a good one I remember spending hours as a kid trying to find my way out Articuno was the first legendary Pokemon I ever caught and it was seriously a tough battle but such a rewarding experience afterwards
I'm surprised he didn't cover seafoam islands after having Electabuzz and Magmar as thumbnails for the first two episodes. Nothing against Mt Moon but Jynx completes the trio
I also wanted to suggest the Seafoam Islands! Glad to see others interested as well.
I love how you can hear the smile in his voice when he starts talking about Paras
23:20 Idk man, Chansey's like the only Pokemon that's able to poitentially stand up to Mewtwo in Gen 1.
The Safari Zone was so exciting to me as a kid. It was such a nice change of pace, and there were so many exclusive pokemon there.
One thing I love about the Kanto Safari is how it functions more like a dungeon than in other games, given that it is required to go through at least once.
That banned episode was not the first anime episode to show a gun. In the episode where Ash catches Squirtle, some people at a store point guns at him when they think he's there to rob them. And, btw, this scene was NOT edited out of the US version.
Jeez, for a place based on a region of Japan, there sure are a lot of trigger-happy people with guns!
@@mastermarkus5307because guns are cool
Only in the Land of Type II Diabetes
I'd probably say it was because it was like an inch away from his forehead.
@jacobehlers9576 why would that matter? Guns are, rather famously, dangerous from very long distances.
I think my favorite memory of the Safari Zone was actually the Missingno glitch.
Mechanically speaking, I read an article explained why the glitch worked as it drew on data that didnt really exist. As a young kid I went "what if I made it load data on ANOTHER field" then found out about loading safari zone 3 into the cinnabar area. Then I was amazed; I can catch all these guys WITHOUT safari balls!
I felt amazing after that revelation.
That's a lie
@@threehead99
You really showed me there brother
@@threehead99It's not. I used it as a kid and used it this year doing a playthrough on my phone.
@@threehead99nah this works. This is how I caught my Exeggcute last time I played.
@@threehead99 well I guess it didn't really happened when I did it we might live in a simulation or something
Finally I understand how ash randomly had 30 tauros in the anime. That region locked lore
I wish I could catch venonat in viridian Forrest.
He had a whole episode about him catching them in the Safari Zone, it was far from random.
@@Duothimir I think that you don’t have a brain. Did you even watch the video?
@@Duothimir that’s what I’m talking about? We watched the same video right?
I love the safari zone because it makes me think about where certain pokemon are from in universe. Like exegutor is a gen 1 mon, but we know they're originally from alola.
I imagine that scyther and pinsir are from the sevii islands, specifically the pattern bush. Kangaskhan are found in the wilds of kalos, so they probably originate from there, along with dratini and dragonair. Paras probably thrive in the stable, humid environment.
As far as doduo and venonat, i imagine some escaped from the zone and found new spots to thrive. Venonat, in the shady banks south of Lavender Town, and doduo racing cyclists up and down the road
This is one of my favorite things to think about in pokemon.
Sometimes i wonder if its connected to team rocket, with Giovanni using pokemon found there and it seeming to close shortly after Team Rocket disband
Why is cubone found in the safari zone? *cough kangaskhan conspiracy theory*
As someone who lives in a small Florida town near a dilapidated zoo, i can confirm there are in fact zoos where you should bring your own hedge trimmers lol
Gen 1 Chansey is totally worth using. Special was a stat that pulled double duty so both it's special attack and defense were good. Throw an ice beam TM at it and it'll do work, while also tanking enemy special moves with ease. I think it can also learn Amnesia... so... terrifying.
Edit: Chansey can not, in fact, learn amnesia. The rest of my point still stands.
I don't think it gets amnesia but it does get bolt, beam, and Psychic.
105spe with no stabs is not really good imo but it's an absolute sponge
@@pikminologueraisin2139believe me, Gen 1 Chansey is a very good mon; it’s so good in PvP that it’s considered mandatory to bring on a team along side Tauros & Snorlax if you have any intention of winning
@@pikminologueraisin2139 Good luck winning a Gen 1 competition without Chansey lol 😂😂🩷😊🩷
Chansey is autoincluded in gen 1 pvp with tauros and snorlax. Those 3 are the strongest pokemon right after mewtu and mew
I had a parasect on my first playthough. He treated me well. Just loved his look.
Ash actually had several guns pointed at him in the Squirtle Squad episode. As for me, I just assumed that I had missed the episode where Ash had caught all those Tauros and was hoping I'd catch it on a rerun.
I always thought they were in a similar boat to Mr Mime where they were caught prior to his Journey , but was unable to use them since he felt like he didn't need them
@@larrychilders6599 Mr. Mime came after he started his journey though
Same. I assumed maybe the week before was back to back episodes or something and I missed the second one when I watched and he had a whole dang army of them lol
10:05 Actually the gender association of color got inverted a few centuries ago.
For the western world, blue was for girl, associated to the virgin Marie, while red / pink was the color reserved for mens, due to the association with military / blood.
So yes, meaning associated to colors change over time even within the same culture
Pastel pink was also traditionally the color used on political maps for Britain, derived from faded red British Army uniforms.
Not a fan of the mechanics of the Safari Zone, but I like how it contributes to the worldbuilding of Kanto. Exclusive mons there like Rhyhorn and Kangaskhan are considered quite rare in universe, no wonder the leader of the evil organization has them in his team.
The Safari zone is a great idea, and I like the idea of being brought back in Ruby, Sand, and and sapphire
I like the Jurrasic Park-esque logo of the Safari Park in the first manga mentioned. That be a great shirt design.
Just in time for lunch, thanks Paraspectre.
Rhyhorn, Kangasgan, Dratini, and Scyther could *All* be found here, and they are so damn good.
Pinsir has always been my favorite Pokémon
His card was sick holo and green background
I love the Safari Zone. Every time I do a Kanto playthrough, I either round out my team by catching a new member there, or I catch a bunch anyway to fill out my pokedex and get one of the items from Oak's assistants.
Not sure if it's relevant to the colour choices but the 'gender' colours used to be the other way round once upon a time Pink is a very bold, strong! Colour whereas Blue is more passive, mellow colour, the Virgin Mary traditionally wears blue. But that all might have nothing to do with the Pokemon creator's intentions 😂
Adding Cubone to the Safari Zone is maybe a reference to the theory that Cubone is an orphan Kangaskhan.
Here comes the squirtle squad literally have a scene where a bunch of guys point their guns at ash, and was kept in the English dub
Theory time
Team Rocket is poaching the safari zone for the rocket corner casino.
1. Dratini is found in the exchange counter and the safari zone
2a. Cubone and its mother is found in lavender town and at the tower after it’s been run over by team rocket and is also seen at the safari zone
2b. Cubone could very theoretically be a baby form of Kangaskhan that’s been poached/hunted by team rocket that uses the bones of the mother to become Cubone in the Safari Zone. Maybe some of the Cubone are some how transported to Lavender through a poachers trade route of some sort
I always preferred the design of the female Nidoran line. I'm not sure if it's just because I thought it was nice to have a "tough but feminine" Pokémon while I thought that the male Nidoran line gave me similar vibes to other existing Pokémon, like Rhyhorn.
Nidorina's design is so freaking good and severely underrated.
@@TheGuzeinbuickI wish her stats were better, or that she could lay eggs still.
But other than that? Pretty colors and friend-shaped toxic mouse. :)
@@a-s-greigin some formats she was considered better than nidoking but yeah both should get a slight stat buff in current games
They could also just swap her att and sp att though cause base 92 would be better than base 75
Rhydon and the Nidos are not so subtly based on Baragon
I like female nidoran and nidorina, but good lord nidoqueen kills it for me. I could never get over the goofy bra
I think they put Cubone in Safari Zone due to his card being available in the jungle booster pack.
yeah I'm sorry venonat is actually the best
I did my first ever full pokedex run a few months ago in the gen1 rom hack Yellow Legacy. Some of the Safari encounters where the hardest to get with a few 1% encounters. Although Lavender tower Gangar and the route 23 Eevee & starters were also a but of a pain. Non the less the challenge was pretty fun. Always nice when all pokemon are catchable within 1 game!
Also regarding the banned episode of the anime: here in the Netherlands this episode did air in the dutch dubbed version.
I love how every pokemon is someone's favorite. My favorite is Scizor but I am glad to see Parasect has a fan.
I think Yellow making Dratini/Dragonair rare is just a change to make it in line with how rare it is in the anime. Finding it is supposed to be a big deal, not like they're all over the place in every pond.
It’s weird that the safari zone episode got banned when there is an episode. That has a whole store full of people pull guns on Ash.
I usually throw a tantrum whenever the Pokemon decided to flee after being hit by rocks at the Safari Zone...
had anxiety tonight and couldnt sleep, saw you uploaded on my phone and its already helping me relax and chill out. thanks a bunch!
I feel like I'm the only one who liked the Safari Zone in HG/SS. But it was absolutely amazing, and I actually used it to get a full living dex in SS.
Maybe Cubon is found in the safari zone in yellow is bc the kangaskang preserve went well n they bred but for sum reason left sum babies behind or died n this cubons r made.
lol
Or they could have just loved the ones from the tower to the S.Z
According to the prototype data, safari zone was suppose to be different more Pokémon were added that were part of the original 191, you could just go to the safari zone for free and without 500 steps, you could battle the Pokémon and catch them without rocks bait so it would have made catching easier, it’s also worth noting before you go to the silph co you had to come here to fight the silph chief which was the one who gave you surf hm 3 he was hiding from Giovanni and team rocket, then he would leave to go to the silph co to fight team rocket and face Giovanni
Nice! Lunch break will be a good one today. Sitting in my rain, listing to the rain and this video, just relaxing before starting back on the grind.
The cut-able tree sprite always reminded me of broccolis.
These are like listening to old school radio programs, I mean that in the absolutely best way. These are bad AF my dude 😎
The Safari Zone being closed in Gen 2 absolutely shook me as a kid. I loved the mystery of the Safari Zone in Red/Blue, but the lack of it in Gen 2 was no bueno.
I remember a friend calling me saying it was an emergency. His emergency was that he encountered a Tauros and didn't know how he should catch it.
43:55 Can't wait for the day you finally read the manga lol
Always did wonder where the Safari Zone got its rare Pokemon from. After all its the only place in Kanto you could catch wild Pinsir, Scyther, Dratini, Chansey etc.. Did they have guys working for them travelling to foreign regions to poach rare Pokemon and bring them back to Kanto?
Maybe it's like one of the protected wildlife areas like we have irl. They're native, but only found there and they setup this location as a safe and protected way to catch these rare and elusive mons.
I think it's implied that it's a game preserve or nature preserve, either for foreign pokemon or rare pokemon. Also has a zoo outside to showcase rare pokemon.
Lore wise there is a reason some aren’t found in the wild in the region. Some are not native to Kanto and were brought over from other regions while others are protected species. There’s a reason you find cubone and marowak in the wild and not kangaskan.
Chansey you can catch in Cerulean Cave
Probably bred and released there to simulate what Kanto was like before it became Kanto ( hence why you don't use pokemon to catch the safari zone pokemon) possibly in a similar vein to a history reenactment park
In my original Blue version, kindergarten me got so frustrated trying to catch a Tauros. Once I got him, he became my favorite Pokémon and still is to this day. I've always associated him with the safari zone too
Chansey not worth using?? Blasphemous
Seismic toss changes everything. Gen 1 only, but it's insane.
@@nathanwatt5545It is a tutor move in Gen 3 too. FireRed and LeafGreen and is just as good for Chansey and Blissey then.
Tauros is the competitive king of Gen I. it's got very few counters and learns lots of good moves.
I was coming here to say this. Tauros and Chansey are major players in gen one competitive. Along side Eggsecutor slightly less so
@@JackTR21Given Snorlax is the third big player, normal encounters are just not how competitive is done in Gen 1.
Unless your name is like, Starmie?
its counter is thunderwave
Seaking would have been way cooler if HMs/TMs didn't exist to saturate the movepools, as he was the only Waterfall learner in Gen1...
Paraspectre, my man, this has pretty much become my new favorite channel overnight
Thank you for loving Rhyhorn. I love Rhyhorn. He so adoptable. 🫶
I completed Fire Red 2 times when I was a kid, and these days I'm playing pokemon Red for the first time. I don't know everything about the game and I forgot a lot of things. So I'm enjoying a lot the game and your video series
Ahhh, the safari zone. I remember getting my Dratini there when I was a kid. And absolutely fell in love with it when it evolved into my now favorite dragon type Dragonair.
I always name mine Marx 🥰
Seeing you come out with another one of these videos have made me a fan. I love these breakdowns and I'm here to ride with you as you continue to explore the Grand Adventure known as Pokemon!🎉
“THROW A ROCK” commentary gained u a new sub lolol
Fun fact, that little strip of land where you encounter MissingNo. on Cinnabar island? Without needing to do the MissingNo glitch, for whatever reason, the data from the last route/safari zone is stored there. If you didn't catch everything you wanted, just go surf on that strip and they'll eventually appear! 🤣
Yes! I love these videos.
Kanto is so nostalgic. I know every tile of the region and still have fun visiting.
Yes, do more like this. I literally had to pause the app on my TV so I could pull out my phone to comment. I love stuff like this. Keep the deep lore/facts coming!
Another awesome thing about the Safari zone is that you can catch pokemon on lower levels before they should evolve, the Lv.20 Dragonair being one of my favorites
This has always led to a theory that I’ve never seen anywhere. You the player, are just following reds story. Every evolution or encounter and places you can visit are based entirely on the adventures of red. For example, dragonite evolves at level 55 for Red but this is not the same for except trainer, especially those who specialize with dragons, Lance. There are places or even Gyms in the anime that do not exist in the Game because conqticalu, to our knowledge, Red never visited these places. Which is why you can’t enter random mountains or forests around the game, such as the grass outside of pallet town. Red never did, since we play reds experience, we cannot either.
@@ma.2099 Yeah this makes sense. I am certain that there exist places, areas or special kinds of training we as the player don't have access too
@@ma.2099Level 7 Electrode says to me that some things were just not considered
These videos are perfect to fall asleep to. And I mean that as a compliment.
Please never stop making those videos. They are so good dude.
Another Paraspectre video?? Today is gonna be great 😳✨✨✨✨
how is your silver nuzlocke going? i really like what you’re doing by making the plushies and am super interested to see how it turns out. it’s a super neat idea!
“I don’t understand the gun” bro has never heard of safari hunting and poaching? Yeah it’s used by the warden in pokemon to prevent hunting and poaching but still.
I found the go park to be a rather innovative idea. As a avid hiker and pokemon fan this is perfect synergy between my daily life and my downtime
You actually don't have to use cut at all in Fuscia. You can walk along the right side of the city to get around it all
Really good stuff. Enjoyed this little time machine back to my childhood
10:08 they didn't always. look up the painting of George Washington's inauguration. He's wearing a pink shirt. They used to think pink was a masculine color because it was a lighter form of red which was associated with blood. Girls were associated with blue because it was soothing like water. At some point there was a switch
My guys, these videos are gold! You gotta do all of the regions! Lots of content for you to go through 😁
in my head canon i always felt like kabutops' evolution (darwin) over millions of years split into scyther and pinsir, and kabuto into paras/parasect
The manga's safari zone chapter is actually a pretty cool one
I’m sure someone has mentioned this before, but the Cerulean Cave. Maybe as the last place for Kanto.
“I mean wow, that got dark pretty quick” could be the manga’s tagline
The Safari zone is goated by competitive standards. Chansey is basically essential for any serious team, tauros IS essential for any serious team, and Exeggutor and Rhydon are great pokemon in gen 1 competitive as well.
>you don’t use the standard poke great or ultraball
Not entirely true, at least In gen 1 the safari ball is technically just a great ball, mechanically speaking.
Bro I love your videos so much I practically meditate to them. Love your perspective! Looking forward to the next one
As a kid, I always used to imagine that doduo/dodrio flew by jumping really high
Wish i owned an original copy of red or blue. I have fire red and thats great and all but I always love my emulated gen 1 playthroughs i randomly have. The speed up feature probably plays a part in that.
I love these videos. I can’t quite put into words what’s so appealing about them, as I know most of the information presented already, but they’re just great. I’d love to see one on the Lake of Rage in Johto, eventually
silph co, victory road, seafom islands and rock tunnel are deffinetely a must, also cerulean cave
Same thing as Venonat could be said w. Doduo but this time to the west. Also since they run a lot the road is basically meant for them long pieces of flat land. They could even race the humans maybe.
Lol
Sounds like a missed opportunity to give Venomoth conversion.
Seeing a new upload by you makes me SO happy
I love these videos. Would love to watch the possible episodes on the Safari Zones in Hoenn and the Great Marsh in the future. The whole gun thing on the Anime feels like such a Mandela effect fever dream like this definitely happened but we never saw it a it really messed with my memory and perception of the Pokémon anime
I was chilling in Safari Zone trying to catch a Chansey on Fire Red when this popped up. 💚
another reason why the safari zone episode wasn't dubbed into English was because meowth put on a mustache that was too similar to hitler's mustache
Considering 4Kids was known to make edits to the animation in stuff like Yugioh (editing out guns and making characters point instead), I suspect it would’ve been an easy enough change (one that actually happened in an episode of Journeys) , but they figured it wasn’t worth the effort to get rid of the stache since they were already banning it for the guns to Ash and the Safari Warden’s heads.
Fun fact: Since gen 1, Softboiled can be used outside of battle to heal your other pokemon. I've used a Chansey in my RBY team as a cleric when I realized it could do that.
Another fantastic video bro! Keep it up! Your page is underrated 🙏
Venonat i always thought it evolved quite late for what it is and should be lowered to around Paras' level. Ive found a shiny venonat in safari zone and actually caught it. Little Toxxin lol
Great video(s). It's a simple concept, yet you execute it well. Keep it up!
The safari zone is such a landmark despite me hardly using it when it's there lol
Thorough, indeed. Thanks for the coverage. 😁
Tauros is arguably the best pokemon in gen 1
I would definitely enjoy videos on S.S. Anne and Celadon City before you move on to other regions!
It's kind of funny to think in several of the pokemon games, if you ever get really frustrated, you can go to a place where for 500 bucks they will let you wander around and throw rocks at pokemon.
Psyduck is believe is actually a Platypus. I kinda wanna see a regional variant or evolution that makes it turn into a Poison and Psychic type or at-least water psychic.
