Dunsparce is based on the Japanese mythical short, fat snake called tsuchinoko (literally "Child of Mallet", since it supposedly resembles an old Japanese mallet).
Tsuchinoko may also mean Earth Child, which would make more sense given its connection to digging and living underground. It may also link it to the Tsuchigumo. Just a thought.
That gives even more reason to make Dunsparce’s line Normal/Ground
Gaijin Goomba has an entire video explaining all the connection has to the Tsuchinoko. I'll provide a URL incase anyone wants to watch and hasn't already cause there's more.
ua-cam.com/video/ADazy0rgLLw/v-deo.html
Tsuchinoko? Bring it back to the base, Boss!
-Kazuhira Miller
It's design (tsuchiguno's) also stems from the genus "amphisbaena", a genus of legless reptiles with a similar bodyshape.
And in 3 years Scott will smash a gen 9 solo challenge with dundunsparce
There's a lot of games to do challenges in before he gets to gen 9. By that time, we'll be begging for the gen 14 run with Dundundunsparce
@@crimsoncutz8430 Don't you mean Super Ultra Mambo Tango Foxtrot Mega Tera Dundundunsparce?
Alot easier in Gen 9 if only because it suddenly gets access to Eviolite.
The Dudunsparce zone is real.
@@james-michaelsellers3884 And a partridge on a pear tree
It's Dudunsparce, not Dundun
Dunsparce is actually based off of a snake; a tsuchinoko, a weird yokai/cryptid thing which is basically just a short, fat snake that can eat its own tail and roll around like a hoop snake. Very underwhelming, but then again so is the thing it's based off of. I can't wait for a Gen 3 run with this thing where it gets Serene Grace.
In defense of the rival having Chikorita, it's bulk actually makes it challenging early on even in HGSS.
21:50 I have to say it: Dunsparce is based on the japanese legendary snake-like creature Tsuchinoko. That name comes from Japans Kansai region, which is the area Johto was based on.
8:55 "supersonic is like the least accurate move in the game"
Dynamicpunch: am i a joke to you?
Horn drill: am i a joke to both of you?
Focus Blast: Am I joke to the three of you?
Dunsparce is such an underrated pokemon, i love it
Hey Dennis!
Also there are no snakes that look like Dunsparce, but it's based on a Tsuchinoko and a pun which is about bees. So it has small wings and a 'stinger' referencing it. :)
Ahhhh your first Dunsparce vid was the first time a Poketuber took my suggestion!!! I'm so happy to see this one redone in Crystal.
Hey Scott. Been following you for such a long time and I rarely comment, but I wanted to say that I love these runs, and that your HUD looks amazing!
Thanks so much!
Scott
2hour and 10 min is my guess
Looks like I was wrong lol
I'm commenting Denis because Scott told me so

Hey Scott, just wanted to let you know I ran into something crazy in Violet- a Poison-type Venomoth! Terastal types really are crazy; can you imagine what it would have been like to have a Poison-type Venomoth in previous gens?
Great video, thank you. I listen to them all while I work 12 hours in a factory. These videos help me make it through a shift. So thank you Mr Scott’s Thoughts
I love the content and I'm happy to see the frequent uploads for December. I've started doing this type of challenge for my favorite gen (gen 5) as a way to pass time and it's been a ton of fun
I'm literally so happy that dunsparce now evolves
Hello Scott and Denis!
Good luck to the weird thing!
The daily uploads are great. Keep it up.
Scott you're treating us with all of these videos, 5 in 5 days oml
Another one tomorrow ;)
I was curious as to how dunsparce will do so this was awesome to watch. Thanks for the great content Scott :)
I love the visual style of the rankings at the end. Something about black + rainbow is just satisfying to me.
The LGBT Goth aesthetic is always lit
Pokemon Scarlet/Violet introduced Dunsparce's evolution! Dudunsparce! It can be two or three segment in its evolved form with three segment being a 1/100 chance!
Fun fact: Dunsparce is based off a Japanese Yokai, the Tsuchinoko. It's pretty similar to Dunsparce - a snake with a fat body and a stinger on the end of its tail. I'm surprised Dunsparce doesn't naturally learn Rollout, because the tsuchinoko is though the get around by swallowing its tail and rolling like a wheel.
Funny enough, he doesn't even get Rollout until DPPt (I thought it was RSE, but apparently not).
Didn't even watch the video yet and already liked it because it features my favorite 'mon! ♥
Also, after finishing the vid, I can say that I really enjoyed it. Good job on this one and thanks for giving this underrated cutie some love! 👍
I love Dunsparce. It’s shockingly good in this game.
in third gen its insane with calm mind
I remember when I was a kid I loved having my level 100 Typhlosion solo Lance with Rollout. Rollout was the best move ever, obviously! I was also very original with my teams, the favourites being Typhlosion, Fearow (Kenya), Machoke (Muscle), Sudowoodo, the red Gyarados (cleverly named Big Red), and a Dragonair that never evolved for some reason... might have damaged my game cartridge? I also really liked Dunsparce! It's such a cute little beast!
*edit* OH and Umbreon! I was inspired by Karen at one point and also had my own Sand Attacking Umbreon lol
“Despite all the rage, the opponents need headbutt to their face” 😂
The landsnake reigns supreme! All fear the rolling noodle!
Thank you for this awesome run, I remember using a Dunsparce with Return all those years ago!
Scott you are killing it with all this quality content!
Thanks! It was my goal since May to create a production system, software, and tools to allow for this quality at this speed. Just barely pulled it off...
Dunsparce is based on a Tsuchinoko, a mythological japanese snake. In Metal Gear 3 you can actually catch one and they have to tell Snake not to eat it because he doesn't know what it is.
Put some respect on Metal Gear Solid 3
Huh, pretty tasty
I don't think they have ever shown what the move Return looks like in the anime... So here be my interpretation: the pokemon using Return glows with that red or white/ light blue light that they do when they are returning to their PokeBall (like in the anime) but as the pokemon, now in an energy based form, goes towards the PokeBall, instead of going into it, the energy swirls around the button of the pokeball. The pokemon's trainer then pulls back their arm (that is holding the PokeBall), and thrusts the PokeBall forward (without letting go of it), this launches the pokemon that still in energy form forward, bouncing in different directions to confuse it's opponent, until the pokemon materializes back into physical form as it slams into the opposing pokemon... And the stronger the bond between said trainer and pokemon, the larger the pokemon's energy form will be after it's trainer sends it flying... Idk just thought of that description and thought it would be a cool way for the move to look, and it incorporates the pokemon's trainer in the action too in a way that, to me, makes the whole friendship powering up Return thing make sense in a way😅
Love your content man, but was just thinking that it was missing more Dunsparce. Thanks for clearing that up =) and I look forward to more stuff!
You're welcome ;)
I’m happy to see Dunsparce in another video! I will be looking forward to its gen 3 run as well!
MY FAVORITE POKEMON LETS GO!!!! Edit: Dunsparce is based on the Tsuchinoko which is why he's a fat lil snake guy
DENIS!!!!
DENISE!!!
DENIS!
Dundundundundunsparse
Dunsparce! Gen 2 was definitely very nice to normal types. I was surprised to see Dunsparce do better than Stantler!
Another great run to watch, very nice job Scott!
There it is! Thank you so much for giving this little snake guy another go in the current format of the channel. It's fun to see. Cheers to you and the team!
You’re welcome :)
Ive become really fond of this cute, odd creature
Fantastic run both of them, though I'd say hopefully going forward when you notice a Pokémon can learn either: solarbeam or Giga Drain, you will make note to use it if water is not your friend. I did find Denis, but that took a while. So, readers and trainers alike, find him so he can reach the top.
Killin it with these frequent updates Scott, just keep life balanced so you don't get burned out!
One rec I have that you should talk about at the start of the game, which day/time you choose in gen2 for the desired:
-Week Sibling
-Officer trainers at night on Route 34 & 35 (near Goldenrod)
You could choose a time close to midnight so you can find extra berries as needed throughout the run. You'd have a better idea on timing on the second playthrough.
I actually routed and attempted a speedrun for dunsparce that involved catching one right as soon as possible in dark cave (yes that's a lot of dead runs lol) and running it for the rest of the game. It was interesting seeing some of the similarities in our choices! I also included rollout in my route. I actually didn't think of using the pink bow for the Chuck battle though and I skipped a lot more trainers, so I ended up getting walled at that battle
I'm enjoying having your videos keeping me company while I play Violet. Shoutouts to Denis
Slight correction Scott, Venomoth isn't a Fighting/Fighting type, Koga terastallizes to mono fighting boosting it's already STAB cross chop.
Hidden power flying might have been better. Uses attack, keeps coverage for Chuck, gives coverage for Meganium, sharp beak boosts it, and dig/mudslap still covers for poison types
Edit: Fighting types also have balanced defenses or better SpD than Def making physical moves favorable against them, and falkners flying type badge boost gives even more dmg
Bro between you and jrose the poke content for December is crazy like it's gonna be February before I get to watch them all lol
Ps. Denis
Just passed the part, in which you explained your choice of Hidden Power. Since Stab is almost allways as effective on neutral targets than a coverage move, especially on the stronger attacking stat, I wondered if Hidden Power fire/water wouldn't be more effective, since it tackles Steelix far less great defensive stat.
Scott you mad man churning out vids like a savage I love it
I've seen a few comments about how Dunsparce is a tsuchinoko, but none of them went into detail about it! Tsuchinoko are basically a cryptid in Japan!
There were multiple "sightings" between 1970 and 1990. The Japanese government even put out a 20 million yen bounty to turn one in. They are said to live along river banks and hibernate in caves. They can speak like humans and commonly mess with people and lie about stuff and they are venomous like a viper. This is why Dunsparce is a 1% encounter in a random cave, because its basically like running into bigfoot! My favorite thing about tsuchinoko is how they attack people. They bite their tails and literally roll around like a tire at incredible speeds. Which is why dunsparce gets rollout!
As you can tell, I love me some tsuchinoko. No idea why dunsparce has a stinger though lol.
Good Squidgy reference with the Lance between a flying type specialist
MAH BOY!!!!!
Dunsparce is my favorite gen 2 pokemon hands down
It’s pretty great’
I just caught a Dundunsparce last night in a raid and I’m actually wanting to use it.
I’ve seen the Serene Grace Dunsparce shenanigans. I know what’s up.
dunsparce should have been a normal dragon type, they were just scared to create the true god pokemon so early. there’s a reason shiny arceus has dunsparce colors
I heard "I stomp the rockets in slowpoke well" to the tune of Toto's Africa
Next do a HGSS playthrough with Dunsparce. Headbutt and serene grace combo is amazing.
I was cringing when he deleted Glare for Heatbutt for this exact reason (especially as he was talking about Rage being useless now)
I remember catching a dunsparce as a kid, I remember thinking it was awful and remembering how bad magikarp was. I spent so so long trying to level and evolve it. I will never forget that awful experience.
Seems like HP flying may have been better to deal with fighting types considering it uses your higher attacking stat and hits on what is usually their lower defensive stat. At least before you get return, that is. It also gets the falkner flying boost from the get-go.
yes i was wondering why he chose psychic over flying myself
I guess Psychic hidden power has hidden stat benefits but it is strange why he did not pick a type that uses physical moves
I'm amazed at your daily uploads. Great work
21:45 Ayo dunsparce is the best snake. THE BEST. And you’d best remember that 😤
19:10 Something to note, Hitmonlee has _very_ high special defense from gen2 onward. It may be better to go for hidden power flying in the future if there's ever another normal type run where you can use Dig to deal with poison ghosts. I wouldn't be surprised if Headbutt would have done more damage than hidden power psychic here.
edit: HP flying would also give you something super effective against grass types.
He actually said about the good special def seconds later lol
Your videos are great man. My dog also enjoys them
At about 21:55 Dunspace actually reminded me of Heimlich (the fat caterpillar) from "A Bug's Life" at the end when he hatched from his cocoon with his super tiny wings 🤣 anyone else notice that?
Now when I evolve my Dunsparce in Violet, I'll be hearing "I'm a beautiful butterfly!" Thanks. Hahahaha
Scott:" Stantler video that i did recently"
Me not remembering it and looking for it: "oh it was a year ago" lol
I did a Stantler stream recently on twitch. I was referring to thT
I find Rage lets you trivialise Whitney, since it increases every time Clefairy hits a double slap, so when I use a Dunsparce or Croconaw I keep it till her.
Good work, land snek. You got through again. =)
pink bow also obtainable in radio tower after defeating rockets from one of the last rooms and talking to an NPC
it just happens to be super late compared to how early it is available through the day trader
Yay my favorite gen 2 poke.
Also it's coverage ability outside of return makes it able to fight just about anything on equal grounds.
Dunsparce is so powerful it can dig while surfing, it's the chuck Norris of pokemon
Dunsparce is a Tsuchinoko, a yokai/cryptid thing that's basically an obese snake. It's got tons of weird lore like drinking and lying a bunch, double jumping, digging backwards, and rolling up into a wheel. Basically it does everything it can to not be seen, like a fat-snake version of bigfoot.
Apparently it's kind of a meme in Japan, and is kind of treated like the stereotypical hunting tall-tales.
you are really spoiling us with content, thank you so much!
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching and making this possible for me.
Best month ever. Best Christmas ever. Scott's Thoughts-athon
Wooop
You know whats great? Venomoth now can actually BE of all types :D
Gen 2 is by far my most played Pokemon gen, and I had no idea Dunsparce existed until last year.
I have fond memories of Dunsparce, but not in the way you might expect. Dunsparce was the first Pokemon I could absolutely say I *hated.* The first, but not the last by a longshot
I feel like HP Flying might have been a better choice for dealing with Fighting-types.
Edit: well nevermind, saved your tail with Bruno looks like lol
Edit 2: Ground DOES resist Rock. I'm guessing you didn't notice the messages.
Red: Nooooo! You can't just use the most generic gen 2 moveset ever
Scott: Haha Return Curse Protect Rest Leftovers go brrr
I really like the Venemoth joke, every time my personal highlight😁
I really like the HUD you set up, really nice!
Yeah i agree, that's amazing! :-)
Thanks! Glad you like it, took soooo much work. It was worth it.
Your getting closer to the shuckle play through ;)
Thank you for all the content this month! Will the overlay ever display the effective power of multi turn moves like rage or rollout? You're the best!
Edit: Hypnosis IS good for the algorythm
The thing about Dunsparce is that is based (partly) off of a Tsuknoko (probably wrong spelling) it’s a Japanese cryptid that is a snake that is chubby in the middle and tapered on the front and back end.
What an impressive ending for this land snake. I would like to see how it’s new evo would demolish Johto! That would be such an interesting special. Maybe also test some of the other Johto evos while your at it… like stantler?
Did a re-do of Stantler on Twitch a couple months ago. Maybe there will be another Stantler video next year though :)
I was thinking dunsparce was gonna land where it did after the second playthrough. About to see just how low It can go in the 2nd. This is gonna be Crazy. Dunsparce is so good
You could add a rule where if you find a shiny Pokemon you have to make a playthrough with that shiny Pokemon. It would be like a hidden challenge pokedex.
That'd be fun!
I almost thought this was a reupload. You already showed us how broken this thing is :D
My time was so bad before though.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Its nice to see you reflect on previous runs. I always enjoy an improved run :)
Ah, Dunsparce; one of only three Pokémon I've used in my primary team more than once (the other two being Beedrill and Kricketune), though funny enough have never used him in the original G/S/C. I knew of him but could never find him. I'm pretty I've seen a Solo challenge like this from someone else and I'm expecting Dunsparce to be a bundle of Rage for a good portion of this challenge.
0:07 - Ah, yes... that other Dunsparce solo challenge video I watched was yours.
4:43 - Despite Dunsparce's giant eyes looking like they'd be very vulnerable to Mudslap, I assume Falkner assumed that Dunsparce went everywhere with his eyes closed and so blinding him would do nothing.
9:55 - As a kid, I also did not know that you could buy Headbutt from the store. I'm pretty I only learned of that during a Crystal playthrough I did when I was older (just prior to HGSS release). As an even younger kid, HM moves would often be given to Pokémon that were in my main team, just because switching the Pokémon out was annoying. Ended up with an Aron equipped with Rock Smash and Strength.
21:05 - It felt like you jinxed this with your earlier mention of "Will this be where I reset?" To be fair, first reset against the gym representing a Normal type's natural weakness is a fair loss.
22:31 - Presenting the sweetest and most innocent looking lady... also the most terrifying gym leader of all of Johto.
25:52 - Battle of the snakes! Dunsparce (eventually) proved itself the superior serpent. Jasmine always felt more deserving of the 7th Gym Leader spot, despite her positioning. There's something that feels more natural about returning to fight her after the Pryce stuff.
34:24 - The image of cute, rolling Dunspace knocking over Lance's flying team like a bunch of bowling pins is funny one to picture. Certainly is what happened here though.
43:58 - Dig was also my go-to strategy against Whitney back in the day.
51:07 - I did not expect Solarbeam to come into play. It's pretty nice when an unexpected move for an unexpected Pokémon comes into play. Dunsparce has a decent special movepool with the TMs available so it's cool seeing that utilised.
This isn't even Dunsparce's final form.
This was such a cool run! He went really fast. Unstoppable, I hope he drinks a lot of sake as a reward.
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!! DILIGENT DUNSPARCE DONE DO DAMAGE DUDE!!!
Where is Denis?!
dunsparce the GAWD
I love that they gave this little guy an evolution, mostly 'cause Eviolite =P (same with Girafarig)
...I'm going to guess 2hr 15min for 2nd play-through... Edit: Spoilers...
Oh! I was counting the original play-through, but either way I was still way off! Well played =)
Hey did you guys know that dunsparce is based on the Japanese mythical chubby worm yuji naka which means "daddy hammer"
I always caught a Dunspace when I was a kid; I loved this little guy! I thought he was a fat little bee or something back then lol; but nope, tsuchinoko! But in honor of the first reset in the run, Chuck is a much better fighter than Bruno, because he has a Primeape and a Poliwrath! Bruno could only dream of that kind of team diversity lol. Also uh… Tsuchinoko love alcohol, but you shouldn’t drink too much! It’s bad for you! Especially during exercise!
When I last played through Gen 2 I thought to myself: "It would be so cool, if one of those Electrodes was shiny." And than the second one surprised me by being great-ball-colored. Rocket is no chilling in Pokémon Home and I just wanted to set you up to expect a shiny in the HQ from now on *lol*
When I was a kid, I always thought Dunsparce was a rock/bug type since it looks a little like a bug and could be caught after breaking rocks. :D
I'm starting to think Whitney's infamous difficulty is a self-defeating prophecy. If you know how hard she is, she's almost a pushover. If you don't know, then she's going to mop the floor with you.
Yay! Thank you for giving my fave a second video! 😁😁😍 Scott, if you'll ever want a special shiny baby girl in Sword/Shield, I can trade you one 😁
Glad Dubsparse got justice to its name. Though I have one complaint. Bruno’s Hitmontop doesn’t have Fighting STAB and it’s best attack was Dig. You could’ve gotten to +6 with Defense Curl almost for free and tanked the worst Bruno could do to you thereafter.
Since there's already a billion comments about Dunsparce and the tsuchinoko, I'll just say that to me it looks like a certain enemy monster whose name I can't recall from Jade Cocoon on the PS1, due to them both being chunky snakes with weird mouth spikes (teeth? Whiskers?).
Also I tried a playthrough in Soul Silver where I tried only using pokemon I considered below average, including Dunsparce, Girafarig and the Slugma from Primo's egg thing in Violet City. I got a Dunsparce with Serene Grace and tried running it like a para-flinch Togekiss but it mostly just died a lot lol. Never finished that run.
When I was a kid I was also very paranoid about misusing the headbutt TM. I only realized you could buy new copies as an adult.
When they gave dunsparticus the power of serene grace it became the overlord of all of Pokémon
