    I’ve watched dozens of videos telling me how great the shortcuts app is but not a single video has been able to explain how to create a simple shortcut that actually is a true shortcut.

    Thank you for explaining the difference between Siri SC and the App. Well done. I think the biggest challenge for non programmers is to think logically when you are trying to create a workflow. Not knowing what functions are at your disposal also handicaps me. I have followed along on a couple of videos, building someone else's shortcut to see their thought process and functions available. When you mentioned in the video about how some functions connect and some don't is still a bit daunting. I would like to build a shortcut that would open photos, go into a specific album, select the next pic sorted by Date Taken and email that to a group. The group email was easy as Siri shortcuts created it. Open album is easy. Just can't get it to select the next pic, insert it in the email and send it. Thanks for all you're doing!

    I’ve gone to enough college that I know a good teacher when I see one! Why don’t you slow down, dummy the material down and make another wonderful video for the THOUSANDS of eager beavers who are left behind?

    I’ve read the comments and got a good laugh out of them. True as it is, what you’ve discussed is way more advanced than “learning shortcuts”. I’d like to follow you because you have a great understanding but communicate it as if everyone’s on your level. My suggestion is to label this one “more advanced” and create a shortcuts for dummies. You’ll get more takers with it!

      Not just people who don’t program. I did a basic course in programming (I can understand basic Java and build small programs) and this app is useless. It is too limited in features and things don’t work like they should in a programming language. Like the variables don’t even work properly and there are no logic gates.

    Hi Matthew so I’m one minute and 20 seconds into your video and I still don’t know what a shortcut is. I would clarify that probably within your first 20 seconds of video time. This video seems to be very educational already from what I’m interpreting but I still don’t know what a shortcut is. I’m inclined to want to watch another video for an explanation and then come back to this one but this one looks so freaking amazing I’m going to sit here. ;-)

    I would like to create a shortcut that opens two specific apps in split view (My calendar and to do list apps). So that with one button I can have everything ready to plan my week. Super simple, but I do not see any option to open an app in split view...just opens both apps but each full screen. Is this possible?

    Nicely done. I'm understanding more with each video. To answer your question, here's the part that I still can't wrap my head around: what do I use it for? And I realize that's impossible for you to answer without knowing everything about how I work in a given day, so I'm not looking for an answer to that. What I am wondering is if you have any examples of when the usefulness of the app finally clicked for someone who wasn't getting how to use it in their life. Are there particular brainstorming actions I should be taking to figure out how Shortcuts could make my work/life easier? I'm just not even sure where to start with building my own shortcuts.

    Hahahaha! I wasn’t rubbing my eyes during this video. Thanks for turning off auto-focus.
    You answered a couple of my questions (not in the way I wanted, but maybe someday soon....). An issue I’m having now is that when I use Siri to launch a shortcut, she just reads the shortcut to me with, “Shortcut says:” and then reads it in a different voice than the one I wrote the shortcut with. If I run it manually it reverts to the voice I want.

    • @MatthewCassinelli
      @MatthewCassinelli  5 років тому

      Hah glad to hear it was better for you.
      It sounds like it may be a weird bug with running in Siri where the data fails, what actions are you using?

    • @CarlosBenjamin
      @CarlosBenjamin 5 років тому

      Matthew Cassinelli I actually broke apart my repetition counter for working out thinking I could get rid of the filler that allowed me to get ready after tapping the number of reps I wanted since I could now launch verbally once I was in position.
      The only things in the new shortcuts is a block of text, set the volume, and speak text. No decision trees, and I’m wondering if that’s the issue. Too simple.

    • @buckandrewj
      @buckandrewj 5 років тому

      Dan Higginson the easiest way to accomplish this is to use an app called launch center pro. You can schedule a shortcut to run based on time or Geo location. You will then get a notification from launch center Pro to run the shortcut. All it takes is one tap to have your shortcut run. There is no native way presently to schedule shortcuts within the shortcuts app.

I know, there is a lot to cover. If I could give you an example of a simple shortcut and you were to explain how to make it and tweak it I would probably start to get it better. For example. I want to tell my watch that I’m about to start a yoga class and I want that Siri suggestion to automatically track that activity and just log the information into the health app VS me search for and opening the workout app, search for the activity and then waiting for it to load. Super easy I’m sure but I haven’t been able to do it. Pls and thank you!

      Hey Jan, totally fair. I got some feedback from another friend on keeping the demo sections slower. I'll be taking more time and zooming in closer on specific shortcuts - for now I've been attempting to keep it quicker to not lose your interested since it's a bit dense, but I'm adjusting to it. Going to work on better section breaks and on-screen elements to help, which should help me add better pacing too. Thanks for the comment!
      Right now I don't think you can do a sleep timer exactly - you can trigger standalone Siri Suggestions from HomePod and they'll automatically connect your phone using AirPlay, and then you could use an Alarm suggested shortcut that's set up with a Sleep Timer function, but right now Siri Suggestions within custom shortcuts don't do the same Airplay to HomePod thing so you can't yet chain the two together properly. The elements are all there though, hopefully that's coming soon!

    The shortcut named Share Availability in the Gallery is awesome except it has an issue - if you have a long meeting like 9am-5pm and another meeting inside that window like 1-2pm, the shortcut will think you are available from 2pm thru rest of day - need help debugging this so I can make it useful. I would also like to make it ignore tentative meetings and also items set to “show as free” which I and others use to remind us of an event that we are not participating in. Thanks!!

    Thanks for the video and explanation! Your explanations here definitely helped me understand shortcuts better.
    I do wish there was a way to leverage Shortcuts to automate additional commonly predictable behaviors, for example completing a podcast episode and adding a routinely listened to podcasts newly published episode to up next in podcast Podcasts; if I'm currently listening to a Podcast and I can create a shortcut to play that specific episode, which does me little good. I wish I could create a Shortcut that would start my currently playing podcast and add a newly published podcast as "play next" based on whether the podcast was published that day of the week. I thought I'd figured out how to do this while I was watching your video, however, I'm limited to the Siri suggestions of podcasts when creating the shortcut which is really limiting the potential of Shortcuts in this example but could apply to tons of apps, such as logging saved meals in MyFitnessPal that you may eat on a daily basis. Is there a way around this limitation with variables that I'm not finding?
    Thanks again for the video, well done!

      Hey Ryan, some of that functionality sounds like it could be accomplish with Stations in Podcasts, have you tried those? When you hit the edit button in the Library screen you can set up what’s essentially a playlist, and then those can be triggered from Siri Suggestions to play multiple episodes in a row.
      Right now the main Shortcuts support for podcasts is a bit odd, it’s through the Find Music action. If you add a Filter and set Media Kind to Podcasts, you can use the other playback controls to start a podcast. You can also changed Date Added to “Is Today” and get just today’s podcasts - here’s a shortcut I built just for it.
      Otherwise variables for third-party apps aren’t possible right now - it’s an odd limitation but I suspect Apple is just rolling it out slowly because the app is already so much, it might’ve been too much for developers all at once. But it seems like people are hungry for it!

    Matthew, I'm hoping you can tell me if I'm crazy or not, or crazier :-) what I was hoping to create with shortcuts or some sort of automation is as follows. I have a recirculating water pump at home to make sure I have instant hot water when I wanted. It doesn't run all the time. Only when I turn it on and then after turning it on. A few minutes later I have instant hot water, therefore not wasting water down the drain. Now when I go out to a bar, it is smoky and when I return home I want to take a shower immediately. What I would like is when my phone sees that I have left a location i.e. a bar that I've designated, it would then turn the recirculating pump on. Yes it is connected to home kit. And I do have home kit enabled so I can use home kit from anywhere and control my home automation system.
    Do you think this is something I can make? Is shortcuts the right application? Thank you for all your help. Even if it's no you can't do it.

    Ok, impressed! Thanks for answering my question from your previous video. My first question is - Are there any limitations to shortcuts compared to the Workflow app or is everything the same? I remember people complaining that when Apple bought Siri, they crippled it to shadow of its former self. You're a great teacher, thank you for sharing!

    I cannot replicate the Music step. I don't think you showed this step in the video, it just appeared. I tried Get Playlist and Play Music, but Siri keeps telling me that there is a problem with the App. Am I supposed to add the Music step using Scripting? I can't see where the problem is.

    I would like to create a shortcut using the health app data (Resting Heart Rate). The data is in the Health app bottom toggle “Health Data” > Heart > Resting Rate > “i” > Show All Data
    That’s where all the data is for each day. I need to keep track of this information for my disabled son and have it available for his doctor. There may be an easier way to export this data than a shortcut but I thought it was worth asking. I’ve enjoyed your videos on this subject and the only recommendation is if you’re showing a screen shot, perhaps leave the camera on the shot long enough so we can pause to see the screen. I think you’ll find we are all viewing this at different levels with the common desire to better understand. So while my request may seem an entry level shortcut I feel learning the basics will only build my knowledge. Thank you in advance for your help!

I tried adding a wait command for 1 or 2 secs but it doesn’t make any difference. I’m one of these people who slows down UA-cam videos to .75 or .5% to listen to them. 😅😢

    I have a bedtime shortcut that opens my weather/clock app and lowers the screen brightness all of the way to it's normal limit. After it does that I triple click the home button to zoom the brightness even lower. I'd love to see the zoom feature accessible by the shortcuts app. (Or know how to do it if it's already available)! I'd also like to see it work like creating a macro in Excel, where you "record" your actions and it is stored like an executable. Thanks for the video!

    oh and I would love for a Shortcut to "connect to bluetooth in my car" but I know the only option for bluetooth is toggle on/off. I'm pretty confident it's not possible, I just wish I knew the "why" behind it. Maybe possible with an iBeacon tho?

    In terms of functionality that I wish was there, I’d like to be able to say connect to specific WiFi network. The reason for this is a lot of cameras need the iPhone to connect to their network to transfer photos/video to the iPhone. So I’d connect to the named network and then launch the camera app as one workflow. Probably too niche to be implemented any time soon!

      Techytech Thanks for the productive comment. If you see other people who are talking about the Content Graph on UA-cam let me know.
      I’m not diving into stuff JSON API calls with Shortcuts and scripting stuff right away because people are new to it, I made this two days after the app came out.
      Also yes I did work at the app, and I barely worked at Apple. I’m just being clear I know what I’m talking about and I’m not a rando just learning it right now.
      Generally when people are watching these videos it comes up in UA-cam search so they’ve never seen my channel before, hence introducing myself for the only 4 videos I’ve ever made.

    Hi Mathew I have a question. Hope it’s ok writing here. I’ve Siri shortcut where I have made a list to choose items from.
    That gets copied to the clipboard. that gets sent in as a WhatsApp message to a contact. And when I run it I can choose the items but sometimes I get an error say the link could not opened please
    Try another link. And sometimes the contacts chat opens with the clipboard being pasted there. It used to work perfectly last month and I have t made any changes and now it stopped working.
    Could you sorry it out of me please thanks so Much. 🙏😌

      Try using a Nothing action before Show Notification and then placing the text in the body of the notification - Show Notification tries to look at what's being passed as input to use as an image, that's probably what's happening.

    • @demobot

      Search for the word "Music" from the action list. You need 2 actions. 1 is Find Music and another one is play music. This is Apple's Music app. If you want a 3rd party App. The app should support shortcuts first. But at least you can open the App using "open app" action
