Basically, Material You represents a change in tone in Google's branding. They're moving away from iOS-ing, and they want to embrace Android's identity of being unique. Great essay!
Which is ironic because Material You feels more like iOS 7+ than ever. iOS 7 introduced this flat design with one accent colour, then used blur effects to make the wallpaper bleed colour into other parts of the system. Material You forgoes the blur and adds an extra two accent colours, but they are still just as poorly chosen as iOS 7+
"Be together. Not the same." was such a good tagline. It really stood out as meaning something when variations on "the next big thing" or "this changes everything" were everywhere. Even "think different" was just a response to IBM's "think," and it only made sense if Apple assumed they wouldn't sell many devices. "Be together. Not the same." is catchy while also actually being a call to action, and a recognition of what made Android special as an uncommonly popular customizable open source OS.

Instant sub. This almost feels like the deeper topics that you guys talk about on waveform but more refined and more in depth, something that wouldn't be possible on those channels , plus you specifically think about these things in such a good and detailed way, it's really refreshing.
After the pixel 6 google started to drift away from the boldness, I'm kinda sad about it, the older models looked really cool. Just ordered the pixel 8, really excited to experience the os. The video was awesome, you earned another subscription!
I feel like this could be used to market yourself as a psychology amateur/entrepreneur. It is so clear what you want to convey, and it even does an excellent job marketing how Material You really affects much more than how we may soon interact with our devices, it is very distinct, very liberating.
This mans is smart! Well spoken and knows what he's talking about. I would love to have a tech talk with you or even listen to your thoughts about tech for hours! David if you're seeing this you are amazing and I hope to see more from you
Great analysis of tech, Google, and how mindful design can reflect and evoke feelings. Yet, I hope Google is able to go beyond just custom colors and really lives up to the idea of "machine learning." The goal should be seamless technology that makes our lives easier, while remaining in the background, yet able to assist, and anticipate, at a moment's notice. I feel that Google, better than any other company, has the data and engineering to get us there.
I think they're slowly getting there with this personalisation mission they're on. Google assistant gives me the best recs of any algorithm out there. Material you is a super interesting step in the right direction but I agree that it will really take off once they can harness their machine learning prowess and properly weave it through the os. (The tensor chip is a big piece of the puzzle too, right?) I just hope they can use the momentum of this rebrand and really get it right this time. Lest we be forced to wait for another big overhaul in 5yrs😅
You are what I would consider an artist with words. Your delivery and knowledge of the subject is amazing. I'm anxiously waiting for another video. Keep up the great work!
Everytime I see screenshots of Material You, it gives me a warm and comfy vibe for some reason The nice round corners, the soft colors and the matching of the accent color within apps, it all comes together to be cosy and unique!
I bought an Iphone 2 years ago and this year I finally understood why it felt so good in the beginning, but now it's just a phone! It's great hardware and software, but it's not fun at all, I've been feeling like customizing it more and more, but I always get stuck. Before this phone, I always had Androids and after a while I could just get a brand new phone feeling by editing the theme and icons. As I'm typing this the Apple event of the year just happened and I looked at the new things kinda bored because it's great, but it's the same, I'm going back to Android where I can not only have more options visually but also internally, I want my phone to be an extention of my personality, like my PC that I built is, or the decors I have on my house! Overall, to each their own, I don't regret having this phone, but now I understand it's not for me, this video came at the perfect timing in my recomendations!
It's nice finding your channel David 🤗. I remember you from The Studio by MKBHD and I think from Gsmarena or the Verge, I can't vividly remember. I'm subscribing straight away, I don't want to miss out on your stuff 😌
I absolutely love discussions like these that go deep into the meaning of tech - it's something I often find myself wanting but missing in the technology world, probably because everything really feels so binary. Maybe we'll look back on 2020 tech design like we do with 2000: they had no idea what they were doing back then.
I actually watch and had goose bumps. I felt you opened a window in a stuff house an breeze instantly flew in. Google couldn't of said it better themselves...
"Material You" should be applied to repairable, upgradable, customizable hardware ecosystems as well. #RightToRepair And what if sentiment robots evolve imperfect individuality? Would that make them as human as we are?
Honestly, for how customizable it's supposed to be, I'm not even able to make the brightness slider appear after the first slide from the top of the screen. You always have to slide twice to get to it. Also, the huge widgets for wifi/bluetooth etc. ale also quite retarded. It just takes up so much space for no reason. I think that in later versions, they should first think about not sacrificing user experience, before doing this abstract handwaving.
@@kimo221 I think a lot of people click on a video and see a good shot at the start or hear something slightly deep being said and have an urge to comment straight away that the video is good, which to me seems pretty fake. You can tell when someone is actually enjoying the video / fully watched it when the comment is about the actual content of the video, if that makes sense.
@@Mirtual My thoughts exactly. I also believe that the original commentator may have also been looking for the creator's attention, therefore it comes off as desperate, cringy, and as you have pointed out before, fake.

I have thought of these things but just couldn't make words out of it. I am glad someone finally did. GREAT WORK DAVID.
The concept of Material You is cool. Its implementation is limited and incomplete for me. Pastel OS colors based on wallpaper isn’t me. I don’t like the colors it generates. It feels like a kids toy to me. And then not all apps are forced to use this new look, so you end up with some apps that are “you” and others that aren’t.
"If we want our phones to feel like they represent us, we have to see ourselves represented in them” I love your video style where there's a philosophical discussion on tech. Please do more of it. In all the technology reviews and discussions that feel "the same", You, are unique.
“What if form not only followed function, but also feeling” ^This^ I love that Android 12 is focusing on both aesthetics & functionality. You’ve single-handedly convinced me to switch back to Android, more so than any other tech reviewer has. Amazing analysis btw!
If Google would have had an explainer session about Material You after the keynote, this would be it. It's the clearest and most detailed description.

The excited David from Studio Channel for Pixel 6 in his suave form breaking down with eloquent words.
Finally… this is the channel we were all waiting for!!!
I really appreciate how you break down these concepts that other channels tend to gloss over.
I wish you could do an updated video on this. Really miss these videos of yours!
This is quickly becoming my favorite UA-cam Tech channel. Really appreciate your take, David! Keep up the great work.
David if you're seeing this you are amazing and I hope to see more from you
Never thought tech videos could be poetic, this is simply wonderful💯
This earned a subscription.
If Google did an explainer of Material You I doubt it'd be better than this.
You're doing great David
Was this the best ad for pixel 6 or something, I actually wanna buy it now
Great analysis of tech, Google, and how mindful design can reflect and evoke feelings.
(The tensor chip is a big piece of the puzzle too, right?)
I just hope they can use the momentum of this rebrand and really get it right this time. Lest we be forced to wait for another big overhaul in 5yrs😅
You are what I would consider an artist with words. Your delivery and knowledge of the subject is amazing. I'm anxiously waiting for another video. Keep up the great work!
This is the deepest, truest, and most philosophical consumer tech analysis I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing!
Little late to this video but perfect explanation of material you, google is growing up and im glad.
Dude, please upload more videos. Great viewpoint and nicely edited piece. Sub'd for sure!
And guess what you got a new subscriber
Everytime I see screenshots of Material You, it gives me a warm and comfy vibe for some reason
The nice round corners, the soft colors and the matching of the accent color within apps, it all comes together to be cosy and unique!
Video essays like these are buried deep inside the unboxing and reviews. These are gems
this whole breakdown is AMAZING, im completely at loss of words on how to express my awe on this video fr
Even Google would be impressed seeing this video. This is the best version of 'Material You' explanation. So well articulated.
I absolutely loved this script! He's so good when it comes to words.
Coming from an LG phone, "Material You" still feels very restrictive to me. At least now I understand what they were aiming at.
I COULDN'T BELIEVE THAT YOU HAVE 15K SUBS ONLY, the content quality feels like atleast a 5m channel thing
I really didn't know what to think of your channel at first but man, I loved every video yet! Thanks for the hard work and please keep it on!
#RightToRepair
And what if sentiment robots evolve imperfect individuality? Would that make them as human as we are?
Now they just have to do a good fcking tablet
This seemed more like a philosophy session than a tech review, so good though!
Seeing all this makes me miss windows phone more. Everyone’s phone was so different and yet so functional
Nahhh bro it was bad and buggy

No

This video is a work of art.
Not that I disagree but I think you're being disingenuous
@@Mirtual I agree, "This video is a work of art" is a pretty big statement, I wonder if he truly understands what he said.
@@kimo221 yep 100% agreed.
This and the "age of ambient computing" was so refreshing.
I often hears the things you explained at some other random places, but from everyday mundane tasks I forgets them.
You are not giving out answers, but subtly engaged your audience with rhetorical questions and I love it.
These videos triggers it and my ability of critical thinking that are long dead since I graduate.
Yo David I got recommended on of your vids! Nice to see you outside of WaveForm!
EVERYONE: we are all individuals!
ONE PERSON: I am not.
Great video, you are really becoming one of the most important voices in tech.
I listen.
I herd a lot about "Material You' from google and others, but none was interesting or convincing enough, but you just did it. i almost felt like listening to a beutiful poem.
Brilliant take on Material Design that Google's marketing team failed to convey.
Wow this guy has a channel
I don’t remember the last time I thoroughly enjoyed watching something so much! Just too good! Subscribed and hopefully you’ll have time to upload more on this channel!
Big fan of you on the “Studio” channel 😏
You, your hair, your shirt, your background is what material YOU wanted to do!
Damn. Bro that’s the best explanation of any tech I’ve ever heard n seen.
I felt this way about my OG Moto X. We’ll see if this 6th version of the pixel can return some of the magic.
Moto X was a really beautiful phone.
One word to describe this video- "Poetic"
"You may be one of the few people that's using that image as your wallpaper"
Me: using the stock Android 12 wallpapers >.
First saw you on the MKBHD channel. I never knew you had your own channel too.
The depth of thought you put into this video is amazing. this is my first time on your channel. I am glad I found you here.
Thanks for finding a way to letting these thoughts form words out of your heart(not head), cos these definitely came from your heart.
I have thought of these things but just couldn't make words out of it. I am glad someone finally did. GREAT WORK DAVID.
oh shit it’s actually daniel, like waveform podcast daniel, I didn’t know until the actual video started lmao
Fantastic video David!
"If we want our phones to feel like they represent us, we have to see ourselves represented in them”
I love your video style where there's a philosophical discussion on tech. Please do more of it.
In all the technology reviews and discussions that feel "the same", You, are unique.
“What if form not only followed function, but also feeling”
^This^ I love that Android 12 is focusing on both aesthetics & functionality. You’ve single-handedly convinced me to switch back to Android, more so than any other tech reviewer has. Amazing analysis btw!
