    My most useful shortcut is a very basic one that tells my wife I am on my way to pick her up and the time she should expect me to arrive. The time is almost spot on. Now, instead of my wife coming out of her office whenever she felt she had given me enough time to arrive, we both arrive at the office door at more or less the same time. I no longer have to wait for her and she knows exactly when to expect me.

    When I first saw this shortcut thing I thought it was so gimmicky and pretty much just what it was: shortcuts. But then looking into it I realized it's basically a simplified powerful programming tool that they just called "shortcuts", probably to make users that are not so familiar with programming more willing to try it out. I remember Scratch from MIT being my first ever experience with programming back in school, and Shortcuts is like a more beautiful and practical version of that and is custom-made for iOS. Amazing.

      Have you ever heard off Tasker for Android it's way more capable than siri shortcuts plus it's a true automation app because it's let's you have triggers based on time, location,state etc which siri shortcuts can't do.

      chad billy I’ve used Tasker for years now on my personal device but have never found a comparable iOS application. Whilst Shortcuts is quite capable I agree that it lacks the dynamic range of automation offered by Tasker and its ability to commence the automation process via complex triggers.

    If anybody is having trouble getting the latitude and longitude share cut to work, you have to add something for the text box to show up.
    Here’s how:
    Scroll to the bottom, search for “show alert”> in the “title” text field customize it (I put “here’s your latitude and longitude”)> in the body of text field below [insert title], tap on the body> tap on the small blue variant that says “lat”> place semi colon> then select “lng” (LNG).
    That should make it work how it was intended.

    I don’t really use shortcuts since most of the things I wanted to do with it like deep dive into the settings aren’t possible right now. The idea really appeals to me though, so maybe when more apps/settings are supporting it I’ll learn to love it.

    It's curious that Apple never came up with this themselves, seeing as OSX already had the amazing Automator and an incredible scripting platform (applescript). Looks great, I look forward to figuring out how it's useful for me... I guess I need to start using my phone for more than just checking e-mails and...making calls.

      True but I did not know how to do that. So, having it in there just taught me something useful although not necessary. I appreciate people thinking of things which I may not have considered. There's always someone who needs to learn what you take for granted. I really want Siri to be a functional AI for me rather than a useless function which is rarely accessed because I cannot seem to increase its usability. I really want to join the 21st century.

      One of the things I never hear in these explanations is “scripting.” I think it would make it easier to wrap one’s head around this, and realize there is nothing new under the Sun, is to explain the purpose and the limited capability of scripting vs programming. I think this would make it easier for non-programming types to understand the value of Shortcuts.

    One of the best Apple...urrr... nope...scratch that. One of the best instructional/introduction videos on anything. I 'thought' I understood Siri Shortcuts. Even after watching your previous videos I 'thought' I grasped the power and convenience, but I was wrong. This video made things much much clearer.
    My wife is very reluctant to update her iOS. No matter what she doesn't update out of fear of bugs, issues, kinks etc. No matter how much I try to convince her she simply won't update to iOS 12. THIS video will be the one that convinces her. She's nowhere near a techie, but LOVES your vids (I think she may have a crush on you). And if anyone can convince her to update it's this vid.
    Apple should hire you to create content for them.

    My favourite shortcut is to download UA-cam videos to VLC to watch on the bus. We don’t have UA-cam red here or download for later unlike neighbouring countries.
    Another one is to find a specific gas station in the next 5km. Because I have an app for that brand of gas station. So I pay from the app and I get discount plus members point right in the app. Not stepping out of the car.
    I got one that finds photos I’ve imported from my mirrorless to make into a grid. Resize the photos too. I used to share it to Instagram but I deleted most of Facebook apps so only whatsapp remaining. Now I share that in between and flickr.
    I got one that works right in the widget and not requiring any unlocking of the phone. It finds me restaurant nearby to make a reservation. Select one and it calls out to the restaurant.

      You can actually incorporate your own custom-made sounds inside the script. All you gotta do (..) is mime64 encode an audio file, then copy that to clipboard (these you can probably best do on a computer), slam that into a Text -action in Shortcuts, then add the action called "Base64 Encode" (but switch it to Decode) and then add the "Play Sound" action right after that. Hey presto, custom sound. Pretty cool.

Besides, this whole "play this kinda music to wake up to" also has multiple other functions in it, or can have them added. I'm a big fan of putting Low Power Mode everywhere, so I'd be adding more stuff into the shortcuts by keeping them in "my favorite environment/settings".

    "Intimidating" is that they removed Workflow from Apple watch. Now you NEED to use SIRI to activate them (now "shortcuts"). I do not want to talk to any AI, so they just RUINED something I was using before.

  • @danteyoutu
    @danteyoutu 5 років тому

    Shortcuts has great potential but there are a few things that don’t work well yet. First, it needs more 3rd party app support. Then you need to unlock the screen for some shortcuts to finish which makes them less useful. Also, shortcuts take long to work sometimes and much worse if triggered from the Apple Watch. The ultimate way to use shortcuts would be to raise your wrist and only say the shortcut name to the Apple Watch. But unfortunately, series 4 takes forever to get them to run.

    • @LacklusterOfficial
      @LacklusterOfficial 5 років тому

      The 3rd party app support is actually the other way around. Spotify, Facebook Messenger etc devteams need to implement Shortcuts support. This ain't a "Apple/Shortcuts team didn't do it" thing, this is a "3rd party devs were too busy developing to actually add cool new features into their apps". Shame that Apple is getting the flack for that.

    • @danteyoutu
      @danteyoutu 5 років тому

      LacklusterOfficial I agree partly. 3rd party developers should implement shortcuts and most will probably do. The problem with Apple part is what they did to the Apple Watch. They removed the shortcuts app in the watch and make shortcuts run in the phone. That takes FOREVER. Completely impractical. I hope they will fix that. Still, first world problems

    • @LacklusterOfficial
      @LacklusterOfficial 5 років тому

      danteyoutu lets have some patience. The Shortcuts 2.1 already introduces some missing functions and fixes some bugs. Here’s to hoping 2.2 will introduce even more cool hooks. Iterative updates is the name of the game here.

    • @danteyoutu
      @danteyoutu 5 років тому

      LacklusterOfficial I’m willing to have some patience for sure. I also hope they work those things out. The intention of my comment was to raise those minor concerns because I don’t see them mentioned elsewhere and it’s important to point bugs out so Apple works on them.

Attach the zip to a email to send to a friend. Yup. More like that.

      Different. Amazon or google home works with full ac power. Your phone have to save battery. And IFTTT is not shortcuts. It’s a mini routine maybe. Shortcuts is more like tasker with strings of ongoing command chains. Maybe like bixby but more complex.

    I love you Rene but I worry your hyperbole alienates you from many, “it’s like leaving orbit and looking down ...” etc., I say this because it comes across as romaticizing it in stark contrast to a subtle “Microsoft trying to cram down windows into touch (or mobile)” diss that I heard you say the other day, I can’t ask you to change this your monologues are beautifully prepared really, but it does at times make me question if there’s not more bias than not. Anyway take that fwiw, if anything.

    • @calvingreen7197
      @calvingreen7197 5 років тому +1

      Fee Yeah, imagery is more powerful than 25 words could ever be, so I guess that’s why he does it. It could be off putting if you’re coming in without any prior knowledge (I guess) or those who prefer it straight up, but for those who have a general understanding of the subject matter (meaning me ONLY) it is enjoyable. Eh, to each their own...

    • @vector3578
      @vector3578  5 років тому +3

      That’s fair, and good criticism. I have a soft spot for things that try to make coding more Accessible to more people, and tend to go a little overboard. Much appreciated!

    • @PTYC933
      @PTYC933 5 років тому

      Of course there’s bias.
      It’s important to have good reasons for that biasness. Oops not a word. Apple got a lot of little things right from the beginning. In short they got input lag right. Retina lcd right. Privacy focus right. Sandboxing right. Then they work from there to work out the inconvenience.
      Rene might sound aloof but I’m sure he’s good evil.

    • @Fee.1
      @Fee.1 5 років тому

      TankQ getting things objectively right vs. “of course there’s biasness” can be the difference between what’s perceived as right/wrong at all, hence the constant effort to fight our very human tendency to develop bias, or be transparent about it at least and not pretend /let yourself be deluded into believing you’re being objective if you’re not
      I’m not talking about Rene there, just responding to your first statement.
      I agree entirely about things they got right initially actually, to the end that many of those things were lost in moving to iOS 7 and beyond is still a hard pill to swallow for me, especially knowing many of them were there ONLY because Steve Jobs demanded it/can’t do so anymore

    • @Fee.1
      @Fee.1 5 років тому

      Calvin Green so again I find his monologues to be delightful, but I’m just saying it’s a tool to be wielded carefully/consciously when presenting objective analysis of pros/cons of...well, just about anything, and since it struck me in two consecutive videos it felt worth mentioning
      Then again as you pointed out it could simply be that I’m struggling to grasp a subject matter that only you fully understand. :P

    This is nice, but Apple are really late to the AI game. If they had put more love and money into Siri it could have done those shortcuts automatically on it's own. I would really like to program shortcuts on my iPhone, but like you said, who has time for that? And I think that's a feature that is very unlike Apple.

    • @NuclearSoda
      @NuclearSoda 5 років тому

      I think Siri should analyse patterns of behavior or daily routine like Google Now does and than program the shortcuts that are most relevant to you. It can be done. Apple should really up their Siri game.

    • @LacklusterOfficial
      @LacklusterOfficial 5 років тому

      "Very unlike Apple", you say? Remember when Steve Jobs demoed the brand new MacOSX feature "Automator"? Oh, you've never used Automator? Automator is pure Apple. An easy to use predecessor of Shortcuts, but for MacOSX, and with way more features. Shortcuts is basically Automator for iOS. There's nothing "unlike Apple" about Shortcuts.
      Who has time for building shortcuts with Shortcuts? Well, I suppose people who want to save time. Or you could, you know, pay someone (hint hint) to build custom Shortcuts for you.

    • @LacklusterOfficial
      @LacklusterOfficial 5 років тому +1

      the first few shortcuts i made were:
      1. Weight: Widget in Today-screen for logging weight into Apple Health's Weight-segment. I click on a button in the Widget, input numbers and press okay -> that number is input into Health.
      2. Sleepytimes: again in the Widget, press it, Wi-Fi Off, Bluetooth Off, Low Battery Mode:On, Brightness:Low, Do Not Disturb: On ("Until I Leave"), AirPlane Mode: On, edit BedTime. So, one button press, and I'm setting my BedTime, flip a slider a bit to set wakeuptime at whenever, then lock the phone and slam it on the nightstand.
      3. OMWHome: checks my current location (fetches address), checks distance to home (stores kilometer details), checks time it takes to get home from there by car (stores timeByCar), time to get there by walk (stores timeByWalk), then fetches all that data and texts my wife. "I'm at (address), (kmFromHome)km from home, it'll take me (timeByCar) to get there by car, or (timeByWalk) to get there by walking, see you soon". all that data, one click. I could modify it to say that "I'll be there in "current time + timeByCar"" if I took the time.
      4. Next Location: checks all my calendars, fetches a list of events with an address in them, I tap on that list, and am dumped into Apple Maps with Public Transit mode on, and because our gorram poxy Helsinki Public Transport (HSL) does not provide direct Apple Maps integration, I instead click "Route" and then select "Reittiopas" (app of choice for public transport over in HKI) -> and get presented with how to get there and when.
      5. VLC Downloader: uses X-Callback-URLs to take the URL I provide (direct URL to a direct MP3 or a video) and sends it to VLC Player for downloading -> excellent for having videos for offline viewing, in case am on a long flight f.ex.
      6. Faves: this is on the "yeah but it's so simple" -tip, but this sets volume to a preferred setting, and starts Podcasts playback of my Faves (Playlist created with music only). Oh and Low Power Mode. Once Shortcuts 2.1 gets released, I'll add "check weather" with "if sunny, set brightness to max".. because when it's sunny over here, I can't see a thing.
      7: Where Wifey?: Just uses the Siri suggested "Find on Find my Friends" hook, so one click and Find My Friends tells me what's going on.
      8: FaceTime Wifey: One Click -> FaceTiming wife
      9: Record: One click: Voice Memos is launched and recording starts automatically. So one-stop recording.
      10. Add to Trello: shows an input box, I type something, and it is added as a new card into a shared Trello board.
      11. Word to Define: Asks for input with a "Word to define", when input, Shows definition.
      12. Days till Paycheck: calculates how many days left till 1st of next month, then shows a notification going "x days till paycheck, hang in there, it's coming"
      13. iDevice Informant: grabs every single thing I can think of (external/local IPv4&IPv6, iDevice name, Wi-Fi connection name, Cellular data, Brightness, Volume, Battery perecentages, device Model, Screen Resolution.. and shows all that with option to copy it to clipboard)
      14. Remind Me When I Get Home: adds input to Reminder with "on Location" set to home address. Still working on this, cos Reminders shoots an error if I'm not connected to the interwebs, so would then prefer to just write a notification without location
      15. Wi-Fi QR Code: asks for Wi-Fi name, asks for Wi-Fi password, and then creates a QR code that you can either share with a friend or just show to a friend, they scan it with their lock-screen camera and connect to the Wi-Fi of your choice, without you having to spell out super-ultra-complex passwords.
      There's a couple more but I'm happy with these. I start none of these by voice commands, just using the widget buttons.
