I generally research sites on the web with a huge dose of common sense when it comes to my tradescantia. And I watch UA-cam videos like yours from people that have success and experience growing the plants that I have. I currently have the callisia elegans and a few more. I take in all of the information I can find but I avoid Facebook groups just for the reasons you stated. Great video, great information! Thank you!
Thanks Sheri - yeah it's about getting info from loads of sources but then verifying things if possible. Wikipedia now does this very well. I think there are a lot of knowledgeable people on the social media groups - the issue is how do you who knows and who doesn't?!🤷♂️🤣
Quite a good round up of the resources out there. I took a look at Premiere Succulents, nice site, threw an order their way:). They are not far from me, might have to take a trip when things are more settled.
I'm re discovering my love for coleus after getting some nice plants from Dibleys. Do you grow them? I use them for bedding but my mum grew them for houseplants and I'm going to keep a few for indoors as some of the modern varieties are stunning! Sorry for going off topic! 🤣
Yeah I love Coleus too. i tried some in the greenhouse very early on but they both died. i must admit, i didn't try very hard to figure out why. Maybe I'll give them another go at some point.
Here, a lot of the shops don't label the plants so I use an app to identify the plant and then google and yt the care/propogation. There are some trustworthy channels but I always have to consider the climate difference, so the info is never perfect, but always good as starting point
Yeah same here - or the label is very basic and doesn't give the actual hybrid. Is this an app for plants in general (I have a couple of those) or is it particularly good with Tradescantia?
@@Grow_Up_Man55 app i use is plantsnap and just for plants in general. It generally is accurate down to genus level, but results may vary beyond that. It identified my portulaca molokiniensis and callisia repens (but not the variegata).
@@Zen..... Same one I use although there is one called 'leafsnap' too which seems to be OK. They all help but I suppose there is no one 'best' app out there. It got the callisia gentlei correct - but I expect it won't do quite so well on hybrids.
They've really upped their game. Doesn't mean there won't be mistakes but I don't know of any other source, outside of academia, that provides citations and 'peer reviews'. It's more credible than social media - in my opinion. Or UA-cam for that matter! 🤣
This video was very informative, thank you. I am relatively new to house plants and happened upon 3 almost dead plants in a big box store here in Canada so I took them home and then tried to research them after the fact. All 3 are Tradescantia and I think with lots of reading (although now I am questioning my sources) I have narrowed them down. Tradescantia Albiflora Albo-Vittata? Tradescantia Silver Spathacea (pretty sure on this one) Tradescantia Pale Puma (hybrid Pallida x Sillamontana)??? This one had me extremely confused, it looked like a Sillamontana but it isn't as hairy and it changes colour depending on the amount of light it has. It took a lot of searching before I came across 1 guy in the US who talked about the same experience with this unknown Tradescantia. I'm not sure if I can post pics in here bit I will try as I would love your input, as a fellow Brit :-)
Hi Sarah. You can't post pics to UA-cam comments - just not possible. However, the first one you mentioned is in the video you just watched - Tradescantia fluminensis 'Albovittata' or Albiflora as a synonym (see 5:43). I've never seen or heard of the other 2 - which isn't surprising as there 70 odd species and hundreds, possibly thousands of hybrids. I currently have but a few - and I was only introduced to the tropical varieties 18 months ago. So I'm afraid it's a case of using the resources I mentioned and doing a load of internet digging! This is partly what's so frustrating about them, but I suppose it adds an air of mystery!🤷♂️ Good luck finding them.😃
In theory, there should at least be as many Zebrina varieties with Chimeral variegation as those without it. However, whether they actually exist and how they are treated cannot be accurately determined by consulting the internet. What exactly is the difference between 'Quadricolor', 'Danny Lee' and discolor multicolor. If anyone can get to study and provide information on chimeral variegated zebrina, including further unknowns, I would expect it to be you. (translated from Japanese)
It's true that identification of plants, especially hybrids, is a fool's errand - one that we plant people nevertheless continue to pursue! 😂 For those 3 cultivars you mention, I refer you to the 2 links I gave you in my last reply to your question. Both have detailed descriptions of the growth habits and leaf variegation of all 3 hybrids.
Anyone selling "rare plants" on ebay etc (tradescantia or otherwise) should always be regarded with a degree of caution! Tradescantia are the closest you can get to triffids so a new cultivar won't be rare for long!

Thanks Lora - I should tell them I've given them a free plug! 🤣
I just received two cuttings of quad color today. I paid $10 for two cuttings. I'm so excited. I've been waiting to find some at a reasonable price.
Wonderful! I'm sure you'll never be without it now!🤣
Thank you for the very helpful video! Gorgeous tradescantias.
Thanks Carolyn I’m glad it was useful. 😄
I have a Yellow Zebra Tradescantia. Fluminesis Aurea varigative, on the tag.. It's a fast grower.
That's also a named cultivar. See www.rhs.org.uk/Plants/80478/Tradescantia-fluminensis-Aurea/Details
Thank you

I usually search with Google and of course watching UA-cam videos. I have occasionally gone to Wikipedia

In those situations I have posted it as my channel banner image and had the other person see it, though.
