@@curlysoo.67 my best tip is to buy little tiny cuttings once the weather picks up. They are a pound upwards depending what becomes fashionable this spring with Tradescantia. And pop it in a tiny pot. A month or two later you will have a plant if you chop and prop it regularly. I found if I bought a plant I was quickly over run and didn't have space to buy another unless I could get rid of some. (Unless your planning on having them outside or live in a huge house) all the cuttings I bought last year will need to chopped and sold or passed on and that's a job in itself unless you've room to keep them all. They grow ever so quickly xx

I’m binging your videos like you wouldn’t believe. I have two tradescantias. My newest is the Nanouk & I received her in poor shape from a big box store. She has browning tips and I found her on the indoor bottom shelf in the dark. She’s been in my East facing window getting plenty of light. I watched your pinching video after I had to trim some of her cuttings. Is it possible to pinch the cuttings with browning leaves?
Music to my ears!😁 To be honest, Nanouk is a right diva and no matter what you do with it, you'll get brown marks and dead leaves. I just remove the offending ones and continually renew it by taking tip cuttings. I've also found that using clay pots seems to be better for reasons I haven't yet figured out. Maybe something to do with drawing moisture away from the roots or perhaps allowing greater ventilation at the roots. But yes go ahead and trim it back wherever you desire. Good luck with yours!
For some reason, my tradescantias HATE high humidity. When I removed them from humidity they bounced back in no time, they have been suffering and bolding, yellowing, and drying, but once I put them in dry areas they recovered real fast.
Yeah I can kind of back that up with my own experience. Humidity is usually not worth worrying about for most plants except... when it's particularly high or particularly low. So if you've got 'semi-succulents' like Trads in a consistently highly humid space then they're going to struggle to dry out at the roots. Hence your issues - and mine. It's like trying to grow cacti in a rainforest!
@@Grow_Up_Man55 Thank you, the pink varieties e.g. Blushing Bridge need lower temperature to have that colour. I know that most collectors struggle to see them in pink. Sometimes, it's sad to see some of them turn back to green 🥲

Wow, you've really committed to this variety, love it. I have most of these in my own collection, I find that the Nanouk likes to dry out in between waterings, and I bottom water this one - I soak my pot in a big bowl of water, stick my finger in the soil to ensure saturation, then back under the grow light. I also have the pink panther, she is a lot like a succulent - so beautiful, I hope my pink stays. I purchased 15 cuttings from a dealer on Etsy, most of them pulled through the transit but I lost most of the repens as they became water logged. Question, Have you seen the purple Zebrina variety? Wondering if they add those PGRs to influence the very purple foliage or if this is just a naturally stunning, beautiful purple goddess of a plant? Great content, keep the information coming and now I am making mental plans for a greenhouse in my backyard... :)
Thanks Judith. I love all plants to be honest and find it hard to focus on one particular kind. They're so cheap and easy I figure I might as well get them all and see which I love - and maybe which I don't. I also bottom water my nanouk - but the ones in the house don't seem to get leaf marks. I'm still thinking humidity is to blame and perhaps the wild temperature fluctuations you get in a greenhouse. I'm still waiting for the results of an experiment I'm running along those lines. I found around 10 cultivars of Trad. zebrina with 'purple' in the name, most of which revert to Tradescantia zebrina 'Burgundy' once the PGRs wear off. I did find a species called Tradescantia zebrina var. purpusii but in the photos the leaves look green to me!🤷♂️
My lilac has no issues with browning , unless I accidentally drop a drip of water on it so I’m confident it’s a humidity thing as you say. And they definitely prefer to be on the drier side and bottom watered as you say. Mines also under a grow light at the moment as one of my favourites at the moment as the colours are bright lime green and vibrant lilac. X
Another fine video Geoff! I got my first Tradescantia today! No tag but it looks like a zebrina, not sure which one though. It's in a 10" pot. Got it from a locally famous family owned garden center here. Already took some cuttings to root in water!
Thanks so much I really appreciate that, especially after a few recent, shall we say, negative comments about this video. You'd think they were paying me to spend hours of my time making this stuff. Tradescantia seem to evoke such passions in terms of 'love or hate' for some reason. I realise they're invasive weeds in many places - but not in the UK. For us they come under the 'exotic' category. I'm sure you'll soon have loads of them. I can recommend Tradescantia zebrina 'Quadricolor' which has lovely leaf tones and colours.
@@Tommyr absolutely agree. When I began collecting them, first place I looked was You Tube for tips on growing, and last year I think there was one video by Amanda at planteria and Geoffs channel. Haven't really looked recently as Geoffs advice has has got all of mine (well 99% of them) thriving and I have joined a couple of pages on Facebook which are brilliant. I love to watch videos though rather than look at photos as you get to see and learn more about the environment and care tips than a photo can tell you. X
So happy you've made this video, it's great to compare and get tips from you. The only one I think you possibly have the name in correct on (though I'm by no means an expert is your multicolour discolour. I think yours is just a discolour.? As I have both and the multi colour has bold broken yellow stripes running trough the leaves, though it's leaves are similar colour and shape to discolour. Oh and your Dragons tail is a variegated Dragons tail as there's a regular one without variation. (Which isn't as pretty) 😊 It was your Red Jewel that started my obsession with Tradescantia last spring and it's one of the few I have never managed to get my hands on. I think I have over 30 others to compensate now haha. Your Jewel is just phonomenal 🥰. I would love to swap a few of mine with you. Watched the video 4 times today haha. And there's your Red Jewel and also your quick silver that I don't own myself. 😊 Some of mine that I didn't see in your collection are Multicolour discolour Green Hill (which is pretty boring) Pink furry which is similar to Nanouk but furry. Callisia Bianca which is cute similar to the caliisia golden one and pink lady, but slightly less fragile. (Although these I find a struggle, especially the pink lady. I only need to walk past it a stem seems to just fall out and I'm constantly shoving them back) And probably my favourite Tradescantia I own at the moment is Blue sue 💙 similar to pale puma but has a lovely blue tinge to the leaves. And I have very small Danny Lee (which I cant even share how much I paid for it haha 🤪 but it's growing pretty well and it's stunning. your welcome to a small cutting of as I'd love to see it pop up in your videos down the line😊. Iv a regular and variegated sillamontana also but I can't for the life of me get these to grow well. They just don't like me. I'd noticed the leaves on the tips of my Trad.Nanouk were looking rather pale. One day on a sunny windowsill and they've returned to a lovely vibrant lilac! It's also looking a bit leggy, so I'm going to propagate after learning from one of your other videos. Thank you for your very informative videos! 👍

Thanks that’s very pleasing to hear! 🙏 Aesthetics isn’t my strong point and the hothouse doesn’t really have many different microclimates unlike the greenhouse which has loads. I simply place things where they hang better. BUT…they do need to be away from the heater and not in direct sun but other than that I’m quite limited for space in there and it’s getting increasingly tricky as everything is growing so fast.
Wow great video! 💕💕 I love this plant family soooo much. Every year I restart my plants. I always get the brown spots and that’s when I know it’s time to chop and start over. Thank goodness they are super easy to root. Lol. I notice I have to be sooo careful with bacteria/fungal leaf spot. Some of these beauties are such Divas. I feel like they laugh at fungicides.
I'm really pleased you enjoyed it, Carolyn. I think with most Trads. because we don't grow them in the way they grow naturally, i.e. allowing them to root along their stems as they creep, it's inevitable they get many brown leaves and spots etc...Restarting them is the easiest solution - unless you grow them like I grew the zebrina in a bag! And nanouk is a bloody pain for it! 🤣 Give me 'Sweetness' anyday...
Did you experiment with cuttings in an attempt to get a "stable" variegation pattern which remains the same when you take new cuttings? Waiting to hear about any progress and if this is possible or not with those plants. I have encountered a comparable degree of variations also in the growth of Hoya Carnosa variegated cultivars. I can get things like edge variegation, half-and-half variegation, 100% variegated branches (which I cut off). Some cultivars feature the red pigment in addition to the variegation. The variation in the red pigmentation of the leaves and flowers is inconsistent and difficult to predict. One thing worth mentioning is how do seed-grown Tradescantias look like? Do they exhibit stripes and variegation streaks, or do they all just look green?
I've tried with Tradescantia tricolor - and got loads of different variegations initially - some really promising after a couple of months, but inevitably they didn't remain stable and all resulted in the same amount of variability. I've also had loads of self-seeded Trads pop up round the greenhouse and they all look green before I pull them out. Obviously I've not made any concerted effort with this - it's just what's happened along the way of doing other stuff. This is just a guess - but I wonder if all the different hybrids of Tradescantia (from each species) come from random mutations then are tissue cultured.

Tradescantia is by far the most complicated genus as it comes to names. I’ve recently acquired 4/5 varieties in a swap and I have no idea what they are 😅
Yeah I think it's because they're so promiscuous and diverse. It's hard to pin down IDs when there is so much variation between plants of the exact same hybrid or species.
I have a tradescantia I grew from a couple cuttings I got from a lady that said it was a dis color. But it turns almost completely dark hot pink color . Nor sure if its maybe a red jewel or burgundy. Would you be able to tell me what it for sure is ?
Tradescantia ID is sooooooo hard. There are hundreds of synonyms, thousands of hybrids and so much variability even in a single hybrid. This plant is usually a annual for me they are beautiful but I can’t grow in winter. I want to try the pink panther since it’s more succulent like it might be the one I can keep ☺️☺️ this makes me happy It seems its similar care for all with the pinching back and adding back in pot to get a huge pot full 👀
I take it you're growing them outside? I haven't had Pink Panther that long but it seems to be fairly vigorous and propagates just as easily of most other Trads (but of course it's really a Callisia!).
@@Grow_Up_Man55 yes, outside, and I always get a huge pot because it’s so pretty in the store. Maybe I will start small this year and grow them inside and see how long I can keep them pinching them back and keeping it compact might be the way to go for me.
Yeah they're divas to be sure! But I still think if we grew them the way they want to grow i.e. scrambling along and rooting as they go - then they'd be much better behaved.

I think that the species are easier to grow because of how weedy they can be, but when crossed the weediness of the species is inhibited by the small adaptions of each species and the seeking of variegation.
Yeah I agree - the vigorous nature of the species is what gives the cultivated hybrids their abilities to thrive in a wide range of conditions. That isn't unique to Trads - many 'houseplants' are chosen because of those very characteristics.

@@kimfroman2023 I think we all want to name our plants - but the more you get into Trads, the more you realise it can be a fool's errand. They're so easily hybridised that literally hundreds of new varieties appear each year. But despite this I still share your desire to name all mine! 🤣

@@Grow_Up_Man55 I did put the holes over him and sprayed them hard but there's so much fur on the plant you know the little bus that's on it so I didn't take it off I did start to try and wipe them off but then the transcenta was breaking off
I received a tradescantia zebrina multicolor discolor cutting (in a mystery box) and it is mostly cream colored with small stripes of green. I am afraid it won't have enough green to support itself or produce new off-shoot leaves. Has anyone had any experience with a mostly cream colored cutting?
It very much depends where the variegation is. Sometimes off it’s in the stems then any leaf can produce shots of any variegation. But in many cases as you say, cream coloured leaves die. I haven’t tried that particular cultivar for propagation but I know for sure cream shoots always die from Tradescantia tricolor. Worth a try though.

You're right. I've not made myself clear enough here. PGRs give a plant certain characteristics that can lead it to be given another name - in this case, Trad. 'Purple Joy' - but the accepted name for this cultivar is Trad. zebrina 'Burgundy'.

I'm a former young plant grower from a commercial greenhouse...I've used a dozen and one different pgrs, so I'm just not understanding how you think it's effecting color? Like a phyto response? I'm not sure how any company could sell that knowing the plant will break free of pgrs within weeks unless over regulation happen and even then they will be stunted and not grow, chemical depending, but I'm assuming most is paclo to control growth and if you over dose on paclo the plant just stops growing
@carlbratonalanalewski4414 You know a lot more about PGRs than I do. Trads are very easily manipulated, and even without PGRs, they have considerable variation in all the characteristics you've run through. I'm guessing some of the many names each hybrid accumulates comes from amateur growers and sellers. Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions and it's nothing to do with PGRs. It could simply be amateur sellers observing a plant looking slightly different and then giving it another name to make a sale, which then takes on a life of its own. But it's accepted that 'Purple Joy' is actually the same plant as 'Burgundy'.
I've started collecting Tradescantia and find your videos very helpful. I have 5 varieties so far. Tradescantia are a great genus for beginners. They're inexpensive, have a good variety, are quick to grow, and pretty forgiving I'm looking forward to your Nanouk experiment. I don't have one yet

My home is dry as well under 40% humidity and usually on the chill side 68-75 constantly and all six variations I have are thriving

I also have the pink panther, she is a lot like a succulent - so beautiful, I hope my pink stays. I purchased 15 cuttings from a dealer on Etsy, most of them pulled through the transit but I lost most of the repens as they became water logged. Question, Have you seen the purple Zebrina variety? Wondering if they add those PGRs to influence the very purple foliage or if this is just a naturally stunning, beautiful purple goddess of a plant? Great content, keep the information coming and now I am making mental plans for a greenhouse in my backyard... :)
Thanks Judith. I love all plants to be honest and find it hard to focus on one particular kind. They're so cheap and easy I figure I might as well get them all and see which I love - and maybe which I don't. I also bottom water my nanouk - but the ones in the house don't seem to get leaf marks. I'm still thinking humidity is to blame and perhaps the wild temperature fluctuations you get in a greenhouse. I'm still waiting for the results of an experiment I'm running along those lines. I found around 10 cultivars of Trad. zebrina with 'purple' in the name, most of which revert to Tradescantia zebrina 'Burgundy' once the PGRs wear off. I did find a species called Tradescantia zebrina var. purpusii but in the photos the leaves look green to me!🤷♂️
My lilac has no issues with browning , unless I accidentally drop a drip of water on it so I’m confident it’s a humidity thing as you say. And they definitely prefer to be on the drier side and bottom watered as you say. Mines also under a grow light at the moment as one of my favourites at the moment as the colours are bright lime green and vibrant lilac. X
Another fine video Geoff! I got my first Tradescantia today! No tag but it looks like a zebrina, not sure which one though. It's in a 10" pot. Got it from a locally famous family owned garden center here. Already took some cuttings to root in water!
Thanks so much I really appreciate that, especially after a few recent, shall we say, negative comments about this video. You'd think they were paying me to spend hours of my time making this stuff. Tradescantia seem to evoke such passions in terms of 'love or hate' for some reason. I realise they're invasive weeds in many places - but not in the UK. For us they come under the 'exotic' category. I'm sure you'll soon have loads of them. I can recommend Tradescantia zebrina 'Quadricolor' which has lovely leaf tones and colours.

@@Tommyr absolutely agree. When I began collecting them, first place I looked was You Tube for tips on growing, and last year I think there was one video by Amanda at planteria and Geoffs channel. Haven't really looked recently as Geoffs advice has has got all of mine (well 99% of them) thriving and I have joined a couple of pages on Facebook which are brilliant. I love to watch videos though rather than look at photos as you get to see and learn more about the environment and care tips than a photo can tell you. X
So happy you've made this video, it's great to compare and get tips from you. The only one I think you possibly have the name in correct on (though I'm by no means an expert is your multicolour discolour. I think yours is just a discolour.? As I have both and the multi colour has bold broken yellow stripes running trough the leaves, though it's leaves are similar colour and shape to discolour.
Oh and your Dragons tail is a variegated Dragons tail as there's a regular one without variation. (Which isn't as pretty) 😊
It was your Red Jewel that started my obsession with Tradescantia last spring and it's one of the few I have never managed to get my hands on. I think I have over 30 others to compensate now haha. Your Jewel is just phonomenal 🥰. I would love to swap a few of mine with you. Watched the video 4 times today haha. And there's your Red Jewel and also your quick silver that I don't own myself. 😊

Multicolour discolour
Green Hill (which is pretty boring)
Pink furry which is similar to Nanouk but furry.
Callisia Bianca which is cute similar to the caliisia golden one and pink lady, but slightly less fragile. (Although these I find a struggle, especially the pink lady. I only need to walk past it a stem seems to just fall out and I'm constantly shoving them back)
And probably my favourite Tradescantia I own at the moment is Blue sue 💙 similar to pale puma but has a lovely blue tinge to the leaves.
And I have very small Danny Lee (which I cant even share how much I paid for it haha 🤪 but it's growing pretty well and it's stunning. your welcome to a small cutting of as I'd love to see it pop up in your videos down the line😊.
Iv a regular and variegated sillamontana also but I can't for the life of me get these to grow well. They just don't like me.
And iv a plant that looks similar to a discolour but isn't as I have one and they are different. So your welcome to a wild card as well.

I've read that Trad. var discolor is a reverted Tradescantia zebrina var. discolor 'Multicolor' - but like you, this is all just one person's view against another. I'd noticed the leaves on the tips of my Trad.Nanouk were looking rather pale. One day on a sunny windowsill and they've returned to a lovely vibrant lilac!

Thanks that’s very pleasing to hear! 🙏 Aesthetics isn’t my strong point and the hothouse doesn’t really have many different microclimates unlike the greenhouse which has loads. I simply place things where they hang better. BUT…they do need to be away from the heater and not in direct sun but other than that I’m quite limited for space in there and it’s getting increasingly tricky as everything is growing so fast.

Wow great video! 💕💕 I love this plant family soooo much. Every year I restart my plants. I always get the brown spots and that’s when I know it’s time to chop and start over. Thank goodness they are super easy to root. Lol. I notice I have to be sooo careful with bacteria/fungal leaf spot. Some of these beauties are such Divas. I feel like they laugh at fungicides.
I'm really pleased you enjoyed it, Carolyn. I think with most Trads. because we don't grow them in the way they grow naturally, i.e. allowing them to root along their stems as they creep, it's inevitable they get many brown leaves and spots etc...Restarting them is the easiest solution - unless you grow them like I grew the zebrina in a bag! And nanouk is a bloody pain for it! 🤣 Give me 'Sweetness' anyday...
Did you experiment with cuttings in an attempt to get a "stable" variegation pattern which remains the same when you take new cuttings? Waiting to hear about any progress and if this is possible or not with those plants.
I have encountered a comparable degree of variations also in the growth of Hoya Carnosa variegated cultivars. I can get things like edge variegation, half-and-half variegation, 100% variegated branches (which I cut off). Some cultivars feature the red pigment in addition to the variegation. The variation in the red pigmentation of the leaves and flowers is inconsistent and difficult to predict.
One thing worth mentioning is how do seed-grown Tradescantias look like? Do they exhibit stripes and variegation streaks, or do they all just look green?
I've tried with Tradescantia tricolor - and got loads of different variegations initially - some really promising after a couple of months, but inevitably they didn't remain stable and all resulted in the same amount of variability. I've also had loads of self-seeded Trads pop up round the greenhouse and they all look green before I pull them out. Obviously I've not made any concerted effort with this - it's just what's happened along the way of doing other stuff. This is just a guess - but I wonder if all the different hybrids of Tradescantia (from each species) come from random mutations then are tissue cultured.

Tradescantia is by far the most complicated genus as it comes to names. I’ve recently acquired 4/5 varieties in a swap and I have no idea what they are 😅
Yeah I think it's because they're so promiscuous and diverse. It's hard to pin down IDs when there is so much variation between plants of the exact same hybrid or species.

I have a tradescantia I grew from a couple cuttings I got from a lady that said it was a dis color. But it turns almost completely dark hot pink color . Nor sure if its maybe a red jewel or burgundy. Would you be able to tell me what it for sure is ?
Tradescantia ID is sooooooo hard. There are hundreds of synonyms, thousands of hybrids and so much variability even in a single hybrid. This plant is usually a annual for me they are beautiful but I can’t grow in winter. I want to try the pink panther since it’s more succulent like it might be the one I can keep ☺️☺️ this makes me happy
It seems its similar care for all with the pinching back and adding back in pot to get a huge pot full 👀
I take it you're growing them outside? I haven't had Pink Panther that long but it seems to be fairly vigorous and propagates just as easily of most other Trads (but of course it's really a Callisia!).
@@Grow_Up_Man55 yes, outside, and I always get a huge pot because it’s so pretty in the store. Maybe I will start small this year and grow them inside and see how long I can keep them pinching them back and keeping it compact might be the way to go for me.

Yeah they're divas to be sure! But I still think if we grew them the way they want to grow i.e. scrambling along and rooting as they go - then they'd be much better behaved.
Your nanouk, does it rain on it? I took mine in side where it was less humid (50%) and i bottom water, no more rust stains.

I think that the species are easier to grow because of how weedy they can be, but when crossed the weediness of the species is inhibited by the small adaptions of each species and the seeking of variegation.
Yeah I agree - the vigorous nature of the species is what gives the cultivated hybrids their abilities to thrive in a wide range of conditions. That isn't unique to Trads - many 'houseplants' are chosen because of those very characteristics.
I keep watching all these tradescantia videos and still.can't find someone with my variety I found in my yard! So frustrating!

@@Grow_Up_Man55 I did put the holes over him and sprayed them hard but there's so much fur on the plant you know the little bus that's on it so I didn't take it off I did start to try and wipe them off but then the transcenta was breaking off

I received a tradescantia zebrina multicolor discolor cutting (in a mystery box) and it is mostly cream colored with small stripes of green. I am afraid it won't have enough green to support itself or produce new off-shoot leaves. Has anyone had any experience with a mostly cream colored cutting?
It very much depends where the variegation is. Sometimes off it’s in the stems then any leaf can produce shots of any variegation. But in many cases as you say, cream coloured leaves die. I haven’t tried that particular cultivar for propagation but I know for sure cream shoots always die from Tradescantia tricolor. Worth a try though.

You're right. I've not made myself clear enough here. PGRs give a plant certain characteristics that can lead it to be given another name - in this case, Trad. 'Purple Joy' - but the accepted name for this cultivar is Trad. zebrina 'Burgundy'.

I'm a former young plant grower from a commercial greenhouse...I've used a dozen and one different pgrs, so I'm just not understanding how you think it's effecting color? Like a phyto response? I'm not sure how any company could sell that knowing the plant will break free of pgrs within weeks unless over regulation happen and even then they will be stunted and not grow, chemical depending, but I'm assuming most is paclo to control growth and if you over dose on paclo the plant just stops growing
@carlbratonalanalewski4414 You know a lot more about PGRs than I do. Trads are very easily manipulated, and even without PGRs, they have considerable variation in all the characteristics you've run through. I'm guessing some of the many names each hybrid accumulates comes from amateur growers and sellers. Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions and it's nothing to do with PGRs. It could simply be amateur sellers observing a plant looking slightly different and then giving it another name to make a sale, which then takes on a life of its own. But it's accepted that 'Purple Joy' is actually the same plant as 'Burgundy'.

Tradescantia are a great genus for beginners. They're inexpensive, have a good variety, are quick to grow, and pretty forgiving
