Geoff I just love it when you do Tradescantia videos, its Monday morning and I've just been to post 37 individual letterbox parcels of my tradescantia divisions more or less sold out over the weekend so will have to take more cuttings, Great presentation on the new video format Its really impressive, credit where credits due buddy, thanks for sharing.
Excellent news Mick! I didn't know you sold Tradescantia - I'll check it out. For some reason UA-cam wants to push me towards making Tradescantia videos so who am I to argue? I love all plants so it's easy enough to get into them.🤷♂️
@@Grow_Up_Man55 Yes buddy I do grow them in my conservatory and have been selling divisions on a farmers market as well as spider plants and other easy to grow house plants. I recently had an email from a German orchid nursery about a shipment of masdevallia orchids currently discussing the price, so long as your happy with the way youtube are pushing you thats fine at the end of the day its all down to views, so good luck.
My moms neighbour gave us a bunch of cuttings from a Tradescantia Zebrina and a T.Variegata I had put the cuttings all in the same pot and we are getting quite the variety of new growth too. They really seem to love the morning light, ours is in an east facing window and growing like a weed! Love your channel. Cheers from Canada :)
Sounds like a good idea - different varieties in the same pot! In many parts of the world they are weeds. In fact, in South Africa it's illegal to even pass cuttings around. They are on the banned list for invasive species. But one man's weed is another man's prized specimen!
@@Grow_Up_Man55 That's so odd, here they are now 'popular' and the prices have been going up a lot. It seems many house plants are now major commodities with some going for over 1600 dollars for a four leaf cutting! (I'm in Canada)
You know orchids are my first love, however, those colorful variated plants are a very close second. Very interesting results especially the pink and greens dying off. I also liked the two tone cuttings the most. Looking forward to following along as these grow. Hope you're well! I need to drop by more often 🤠
I just love plants! I think if I had a warehouse-sized greenhouse there wouldn't be enough room to grow everything I want to grow. There are sooooooo many interesting plants out there. Thanks for dropping by Nicole, I appreciate it - don't worry though - I understand the pressures of creating content and trying to watch others too - you can't do everything! I made the decision early on to just focus on my own stuff. For me, it's been the only way to keep sane, even though I really wish I could save some time to support others.
Ohh, that half & half is interesting :) I'd watch that to see if it is the least bit stable. I did get my box of tradescantia from that place you mentioned, very nice stuff!
Yeah I could have my future fortune in that plant pot! 😂 Glad your Trads are good ones. Probably a good job I don’t live within posting distance or I’d clear them out.
@@Grow_Up_Man55 There is another sprig of that pattern in one of your hanging pots, might want to tease it out....... That vendor would fill you up quick! Ordered growers choice 6 pack, they sent 8 different plugs + a good handful of Callisia repens & Ceropegia woodii. And, a mystery labeled 'pink fuzzy', a very pelted variegated tricolor.
So I did the same thing..I have solid green, variegated and no pink..I like them all. They are all outside and blooming their little heads off. My results show the colors aren’t stable.
Hey Geoff, once again having you talking about plants in the background has inspired me. It looks to me that the light in your green house is pretty even throughout. And in my home, I have full sun for a few hours in a few windows... I took one part of your experiment, one step further: I took 3 cuttings of my T. Tricolour that were 100% cream/pink, I'm placing them in the sunniest spot of my home (I don't have a green house), as we know, low levels of light makes Tradescantia go green and stretchy. My theory is: will higher levels of light promote good growth on a fully pink/cream cutting? (Will I remember to tell you what happened? lol) Ps: I did this experiment just today as I was listening to you.
Good to hear Charlie! If I can inspire anyone it's a win! It's fun to try experimenting and you usually learn something from it. Will be interesting to hear what happens with yours. You might get issues with the sun through glass - although even that depends in terms of how strong it is, and how long it's on the plants for. Let me know how you get on.
Plants use chlorophyll to synthesize sugars. I did not try this, but did you try to add sugar to fertilizer for variegated clones? I also hava a Hoya Carnosa with one totally variegated branch, some spotted green & cream and some fully green, all in the same pot.
I'm not sure about the sugar, but I've wondered what would happen if plants were actually given chlorophyll as a nutrient. We sell it in the health food store where I work--I actually have some but I don't think the plants would like their toes cooled by the peppermint oil used in it to give it a flavor. I may try this experiment with unflavored liquid chlorophyll in the near future and see what happens.
@Christmas Snow I've never tried adding sugar, or heard of anyone doing it. I guess we'd need a botanist to tell us whether giving sugar to plants would replace their own production of food - it sounds unlikely to me, but you never know.
@brotony101 Like the sugar thing, it seems unlikely to me that giving them chlorophyll would have much effect on variegation - sounds like the old wives' tale about eating fat making you fat! But...I have an open mind about it. Might be worth experimenting if you have access to chlorophyll.
It would work, for sure. Although it works super quickly any method you choose, so I'm not sure why you want to air layer them.🤷♂️ Maybe if you were having trouble with one of the hybrids.
Yes they are! Although they're not unique in that. There are literally trillions of plants that are clones from a single parent - bananas, fastigiate Yew trees just to name 2.
