Thel is my fave character. My very first tattoo was a Mark of Shame on my arm.
I have definitely missed him in Infinite but i actually really liked what we saw of him in 5. Its really cool to see his role as a leader expanded upon from the snippets we got in 3.
I do not understand the hate on his "New" armor. Like yeah its heavily designed and flashy, its Ceremonial Armor. The position of Arbiter has been brought back out of the mud in which the Prophets kept it. Its returned to a position of Legend. Of strength and prowess, so hell yeah its gonna look like that.
Also. Prophet's Bane? Mmm. Chef's kiss. Beautiful weapon. I always jokingly hope on the inside of the hand guard is an engraving of "Fuck Truth" in Sangheilli.

I mean it’d be dumb to kill off the Master Chief unless they knew for sure it’d be the grand finale of the series/timeline, but it would be nice to play as other protagonists that are distinctly different to play as. Wrap up his story for a momentary hiatus while you focus on other avenues. Like if Halo infinite had different spartan characters you can cycle through for different experiences. You’d have an old school spartan 2 with halo 3 inspired equipment, a spartan 3 with reach/4 inspired armor abilities, and a spartan 4 with halo 5 style movement options. And each of those mechanics are modified to be more powerful and versatile then their original games. And then later on you could throw in playable elites like everyone wants, but also other covenant species that we’ve never played as before outside of the halo wars side games. And THEN it could translate to Halo multiplayer, where it’d feel like a pseudo TF2 or hero shooter feel without feeling overly invasive to the overall experience, because each of those plays types was a thing of halo in the past, just side by side with old and new.

The way I see it, Halo started out with the premise that the Chief that you're playing as (and maybe his twin that your friend sat next to you played as too) is potentially the last Spartan alive. This immediately gives things a very.... daunting.... but inspiring feeling, playing as perhaps humanity's real last hope.
All of the main manufacturing plants, training facilities and science bases for the Spartan program went up in flames since Reach was destroyed.
They try to hammer this point home. That you really could be the last. This, imho, was when the Chief was at his all time high. Around Halo 2 and 3 where we were still pretty sure we were the only Spartan II left. We could really embody him in the games, and his one liners were becoming iconic AF.
Then we get a glimpse into the past, to fill the shoes of a Spartan III team on Reach. Not as strong, as athletic, or as tough as the Spartan II that our main man the Chief is, but these guys are still Spartans, and extremely deadly.
The plateau that Bungie left the Chief on.... 343 tried to turn it into a mountain, and it crumbled. And Chief fell. Oh god damn did he fall.
Rentacop Spartans flood the entire lore, Spartans that nobody wants to relate with because they're volunteers with gung-ho typical American badass personalities and it's not engaging or exciting, it's cringe. The more they muddied the waters, the more they grew bored with the Chief as a character.
You see, 343 clearly want to tell heartfelt and deep stories about their Spartans. We don't really want that. We've never wanted that.
It's kinda like Halo being purchased by your Mother. All these cool characters and she just wanna writes a love story.
And the result is, this. You got people saying the Master Chief needs to die.

    • @SkyNinja759
      @SkyNinja759 2 роки тому +5

That's a great way of putting how the communtiy feels.
There was a perfect storyarc and wrap up after Halo 3.
Now if feels like Chief is being dug up and taking down a peg. Spartans are everywhere and Chief no longer gets the respect of a lone saviour of humanity ("I order you to surrender thay AI", "I thought you'd be taller", etc.)
The awe is gone, the mythical essence of being _the_ supersoldier is gone. Now he's back to being a pawn and ruining his entire original arc.
It's like if Goku from DBZ went back to being a whimsical kid, and on par with Yamcha/Tien/other Z-fighters. You can't do that after the series blows a huge load. There either needs to be a raising of stakes (good luck with that, as Halo 3 had galatic scale extinction consequences) or he needs to become a mentor/non-main character.
343i had the limelight for small scale intermediate games like ODST and parrallel stories like Reach, but chose the cowards way and dug Chief up for cheap iconography sake.

Halo reach is my favorite halo game because it didn't have chief, but also because it explained what happened before ce and how humanity was in a desperate struggle to survive. Reach made the halo games feel more significant and emotional because it showed how the odds were heavily against humanity and that master chief saved the human race and even the entire universe from total annihilation. Without reach we wouldn't have truly grasped how desperate the war was for humanity and how much weight was being placed on chiefs shoulders. I think they should make an arc for chief in which the fighting is finally over and he can take the suit off. It is referenced several times throughout the novels and graphic novels that chief wants to eventually take off the armor and become a higher rank within the UNSC that doesn't involve him fighting to save humanity. I think it is an excellent idea to delve into the diplomatic side of chief that doesn't want to fight all the time, and instead take off the armor. Maybe they could make a game about the stories of Spartans such as the members of blue team or how a lot of spartan 4's transitioned from being odsts to becoming Spartans. There is so much more in the halo universe than just chief, but I still want his face to be a secret to the players because if they showed his face then everything would be ruined.

    • @SkyNinja759
      @SkyNinja759 2 роки тому

While I can support Cheif turning into a mentor figure. It can't work because he needs the armour, he needs to be faceless.
If anything he could be a live fire drill instructor of a new batch of Spartans, when something goes wrong and he then needs to guide his recruits through their situation, popping in and out either other comms or in background scenery (through "glass windows").
Gears of War took this aproach with Marcus, and to my knowledge it worked fairly well. That's because Marcus was already done with fighting at the end of GoW3 and we put to rest only to be pulled back as a supporting character by his son. Cheif doesn't have those options, so having pseudo-children through recruits would have been a safe play.

I like how all of the reasonings to get rid of Master Chief are all the reasons why I like the Master Chief. Bungie knew what they were doing, they made Chief silent with no growth because it wasn’t about the master chief, it was about the player. The point was to let the player feel how they wanted to feel about what was going on. This is why I don’t like 343’s master chief and the way they write their stories, they always try to make you feel a certain emotion rather than letting the emotion happen naturally. I personally didn’t care that much that Cortana was going rampant, or perhaps I would have if the writers weren’t trying to force that emotion out of me. It just made me cringe, as does pretty much everything involving halo nowadays. I miss Bungie.

I would say it's more about the players relationship with the setting than the actual player. Halo focuses more of the setting than any one character. Halo CE was Alpha Halo, Halo 2 was about Arbiter's relationship with his faith as well as his relationship with Halo, Halo 3 was more about Earth and the Ark, Halo Wars was about the war itself, ODST was about New Mombasa/the Portal, and Halo Reach was about Reach. There are characters in those games, but none of them except Arbiter were ever a main focus, and Arbiter was just used as a proxy for the Elites to justify them joining the UNSC.

    • @sleepshouter5017
      @sleepshouter5017 2 роки тому +2

@@gabethebabe3337 well the setting is a whole other thing to analyze, I was just talking about the master chief specifically because that’s what the video was about lol. But you bring up a good point, about the player’s relationship with the setting. To go along with what I was saying, that relationship is much more natural when the player is given a silent “husk” to experience the setting with, how they themselves would experience it. Versus playing a character that speaks about how they feel about the setting. This is one of the reasons why I kind of don’t like ODST. I really don’t like the characters I’m playing as speaking their mind, because sometimes it contradicts with how I think about the situation and breaks immersion with the setting. I no longer feel like I’m experiencing it for myself and rather I’m just stuck in someone else’s head and have no control over how they think.
Just imagine Halo 1, 2, 3, ODST, or Reach with master chief/arbiter/rookie/noble 6 commentating about what was going on and how they felt about what was happening. I don’t think Halo would be looked at as fondly if that were the case, even if the commentary was well written. That’s basically my whole point, and the fact that anyone thinks that master chief should be replaced because he doesn’t speak enough shows how blind they are to what makes a video game’s setting like Halo’s immersive to play. It’s because the character you play as shuts the fuck up and let’s you think for yourself.

No its 100% a good point.
The master chief is not and never was the main character or the driving force behind the franchise, he was a faceless husk for the player to embody as a vehicle for the gameplay.
You do not need to have the master chief in order to have a good halo game and the mast chief does not embody Halo.
Halo Is the Universe and the factions and characters that inhabit it, not the individual story of any one character or event.
Its perhaps the biggest flaw of the 343 era games in thinking that the game needs to revolve around the chief personally and be a "spartan" story.
There are many potential alternatives to the master chief that could be used as vehicles for the story, weather that be another faceless protagonist solely existing to act as a means of conveying the player, or a unique character in thir own right who has there own backstory and motivations.
Imagine a game centered on the insurrection where you get to play as a Rebel or a UNSC Marine, or perhaps a game set during the height of the human covenant war from the perspective of the covenant.
Maybe a Zombie/Survival horror game where you play as a Marine or civilian trapped on a flood infested ship trying to escape?
All of these ideas would work and none of them require the master chief.
So yes, it is time to move on from the master chief.
Because until we do the franchise will never evolve past being a subpar sequel franchise.

No one would have care if 'it made you feel like Chief' because no one knew who the hell he was yet. No, the REAL reason for why CE was so good was because the combat was fantastic, the level design phenomenal, the music memorable, the Sci-Fi concepts unique, and the world had a subtle humor to it that blended surprisingly well with the action and horror elements.

I personally think they need to explore other mediums of telling stories within the universe. The Chief doesn't need to be replaced, but there is so much stuff that can be made from pre-existing lore that can be so good. I don't want him gone, because I like where the story progresses, but I would love another one shot like ODST, or Reach or even a game about the Marines. Delving into Johnsons origins during his career against the Insurrectionists and his first contact with the covenant on Harvest. What I am disappointed about with the current story is so much ass-pulling of plot details to make up for "mistakes" they made from Halo 5. It just feels like they keep making a bigger and bigger enemy that only a single person can tackle, or completely trivializing all aspects of the world that they had a hand in building.
Infinites story was alright, but like with most AAA games these past years, its polished mechanics could not hide the lack of content still present within the game and the rushed story that if done like any other halo game would have amounted to maybe 1 - 2/3rds of a normal title in the franchise. I enjoyed the open world during my time with the game, but I don't feel it did anything for the game other then create a lot of needless busy work that really did not add anything to the game itself.

I can see a few good directions for halo to go in.
    Some settings for games:
-A final Master Chief game. Where the ending is Chief finally settling down after saving humanity for the -nth time again.
-A halo game either focusing on black team or the early spartan II years, which can play into that “team” stuff they were going for in Halo 5. Could make for excellent change of gameplay in addition to basically ensuring a co-op experience.
-A covenant based game. Where we see the brutality against humans with maybe Spartan IIs and IIIs making a cameo as harder opponents. Will allow for excellent exploring of the covenant religion, culture and brutality against humanity.
-Another ODST game? People have been talking about flood horror? I think this can be implemented such as a high charity survival game where you play as an ODST prisoner.
    - A halo spin-off like Halo Wars where you command fleets in naval battles in key moments during the human covenant war.
    -Another Spartan III game 🤷‍♂️
These are just concepts and they can make MANY many games. I personally have been playing Halo my whole life, twenty years. I think Halo does need to explore more than master Chief. We’ve only had a few games that few people have played that aren’t master Chief in comparison to the mainline Halo games.

The Veteran perspective - Someone who is aware of Chief's past, his lore, his history, and knows that this is more than enough character development than most games could muster.
The Bungie perspective - In an old Vidoc, Bungie described the Chief as nothing more than a vessel for the player. As such, there is little need for excessive dialogue. Chief was created with players in mind instead of trying to force relatability, which in the end made him more iconic.

Or maybe more ODST stuff. Again, an unmeasurable amount of potential with having the books adapted to gameplay albeit with some adjustments.
Or (particularly what I would’ve done) tell the Forerunner story set way in the past detailing how they DIED (yes, *died* . At the very least, it’d be to gauge player reaction to fighting Forerunner enemies and the Flood to potentially put them in Halo 4.) I would’ve left them dead. Better off that way

The difference between Master Chief and Mario, is Chief is apart of a genuine story where as Mario’s universe doesn’t take itself seriously, and doesn’t have a actual story. It’s just a repeat of the same story.
Please don’t think I don’t take super Mario bros seriously. I know there is an actual timeline ( according to matpat )

I wouldn't say he was apart of a genuine story until about Halo 4. In Halo 1-3, he was largely just a vehicle for players to experience beating down aliens religiously. He had about as character impact as Doom Guy.

I believe we should have a new character. I really enjoyed how Reach placed us into a new squad with a time period of tragedy.
I love Chief though, sometimes I think there’s a lot of stories to dive into rather than our man in green. Killing him off though? No, he shouldn’t die even on his last story.. John deserves better than that.

Sonic isn't silent on the 3d games unlike Mario, also, Master Chief grew more as a character in Halo 4 than Halo 5

Guy who created the TV series adaptation: we need to move on from Master Chief. He’s a dull character who never removes his helmet.
Also guy who created the TV series adaptation: we didn’t play any of the games, just borrowed elements about the game’s story.

The funny thing is that after Halo MCC dropped on PC, tons of people from different cultures, both men and women, uploaded their first playthroughs of the series and ended up loving the Chief specifically because he's a blank slate character in the first 3 games. The same goes for Noble 6, who I personally feel more attached to than Chief thanks to the armor customization.
Chief is the perfect vehicle for the player to view the Halo universe from, however. He's blank enough for the player to feel immersed, never even showing his face, yet still such a badass that you believe he's the right guy for the job (which also helps play into the power fantasy gameplay of being a Spartan).

I would like to see more spin-offs though, imagine a halo wars type of game but it’s first person, call it something like Halo: Legacies. It could have a full narrative story with a set cast or take the BattleField 1 route and do war stories, then it would really open up possibilities, you could play as Jerome from Red team one mission, you could even switch it up completely and play as the first arbiter to be disgraced from “The Duel” in Halo legends, or even play as a forerunner fighting the flood from way back when Forerunners were fighting ancient humans and that’s when the flood first came about (to my knowledge), or you could play the outskirts mission from H2 except you play as that marine sniper on the rooftop in the cutscene, you fight in a complete different area and since your so much more vulnerable your mission is to mainly scout targets headed towards the crash site and let Johnson know and that’s when he would call out the positions that you heard as the chief in the original mission. Or imagine playing as a flood combat form taking part in invading a covenant cruiser. Idk just a thought

Its so stupid because master chief doesnt HAVE to show emotion or change. Its the environment around him that does, he just seeks to control/protect it.

I’d love another title with out chief as a MC, but I would NEVER want him to be killed or written out. I’d just like another view of the universe like ODST

It was a topic of much debate when we were waiting for Halo: Infinite to come out. Some people were saying 343 should just take another character like Jerome-092 and use him as the main flag character because Chief was 'old' and had 'run his course'. We've seen titles without the Chief; ODST, Reach, Halo Wars 1 and 2, Strike and Assault, etc etc and sure, they do fine, but that's because events happening still indicate that the Chief is off on his own adventure and we're just seeing someone else's adventure for a moment. But you can not have Halo without the Chief, it just doesn't work that way.
It's why Gears 4 and 5 still include Delta Squad, the devs knew that without them, it's just not the same (though 5 focused more on Marcus, JD, and his crew more than Delta.) Long standing games that have a beloved face to the franchise will usually live on until they can no longer. So Link, Mario, Samus, Spyro, Crash, Chief, Marcus, they'll all be a part of their respective titles, even if the game isn't directly about them.

Halo CE, Halo 3, Halo 4, and Halo Infinite were Cheif exclusive games. Halo 2 and Halo 5 had Cheif buy cycled through other characters too. Halo 3: ODST, Halo Reach, Halo Wars 1, Halo Wars 2, and Spartan Assault all excluded Cheif. Having him in a game or not seems to be less important to its success than who is developing the game.

The whole point of the chief is to let us step on HIS shoes. Not be a whiny armored baby or "relatable". Tf do i wanna relate to? No, we like being the badass cyborg man that kicks alien ass in outer space and blows up ringworlds for fun.

I started in the days of Halo 2 but i really do like the development 343 did on Chief.
It speaks to the gaming landscape of the times too. Back in the og 3 (2001-2007) the silent protagonist dropping quips was the culture, but since about 2011 we see a lot more development in the people we play as.
And amazingly OG Chief and Reclaimer Chief still feel consistent.
In CE to 3 Chief had been at this a while. Covenant were a known threat and so Chief didn't need to do much more than grab a weapon and kick ass.
But since 4 the universe is in new and uncharted waters. The Didact and his Promethians, Covie Remnants that fight and act similar but still different enough to be worth a reassessment. The Created? The Banished? These are new and unknown threats, so people have to talk and coordinate more again as the fight has changed.

We've had games and modes not focused on Chief but getting rid of him entirely doesn't seem like a smart move unless they enforce a fate worse than death on him where he basically just exists for publicitiy's sake like Wolverine or Batman.
