I saw Miles live a couple of times but Chaka got him to do something that I never saw him do, smile. This is a beautiful performance.
daddyorama yes-a rare thing-a smile from Miles.
If Chaka can't make you smile then noone can.
He and his bass player also smile at each other at around 01:33. They obviously had a very close relationship.
Good cocaïne un the early 90's
Wonderful ❣️ watching here now March 2020. 🎵🎶👌💜🎤🎺🙂
Miles plays his horn with the precision of a surgeon.
The trumpet master, alone in his style, and often playing back to the audience (not a lack of respect, just his way to play)
Wears beautiful jacket for us despite sweating hard
Miles always lets everyone else shine when he plays
Miles Davis and Chaka Khan jamming? Improv masterclass.
Imagine Rachelle Farelle...but I love Chaka too
FACTS! Sounds better then most rehearsed music
What; was she holding those papers for?
The Only Person that could make Mile Davis smile...Empress Chaka Khan
Amazing Music History
Exactly 👍
Miles was not one to share his stage with a vocalist, so this is a rare and very special occasion. Go Chaka!
Yes, for Miles to insist that she come out and be with him shows the genius of the man and the stupidity of the youtube computer warriors sitting behind keyboards talking out their asses, LOL
A terrible vocalist that sings completely out of tune...
@@Ingrid_Abrams haha abrams i'm the best person here

that's REAL jazz. A spontaneous creation happening before your eyes/ears. Awesome.
it's real gay
Would love to give this 100 thumbs up.
Miles Davis, one of the coolest musician ever 😎
By the end he ruined his reputation, he was too high and such a junkie what he played made no sense. People are like “it was amazing and orthodox” but actual musicians say it was wrong and he had no idea what he was playing.
Yeah... he hardly broke a sweat.
That heroïne kicked his ass. Marcus Miller tried to get him on the straight path, bud indeed he was lost. I traveled along with him across the world mostly in Japan, I lived there at this time, but he was broken (Sorry to say that, but it's True) I still miss this emperor of Jazz! Just like John Coltrane and Chet Baker!
@@ronniebijleveld6265 What!? What a crazy experience/life!!
@@xtrvoltz3921 Did you mean "unorthodox?"
This song was written by Steve Porcaro of Toto. The Toto guys were basically the studio band for the Thriller album, and co-wrote and arranged this song.
KingdomofLuke1
Yes, I know....
I learned this from researching KORG TRITONS, before purchase one for my 8 yr old daughter, 2016.....
Music = Air = Life...
I know Pam Porcaro is my best friend and Steve is a genius

There's nothing that a session man or more could ever do.
The brothers Porcaro are Bkns!!!! Toto legend...Thankssssss for all
Rip to Miles and Michael. Pure genius.
and chaka
@@OS-yg9fr Chaka isn't dead. Or did you she's a pure genius like Miles and Mike?
@@mimikinmiracle83 Indeed.
To Miles Davis for another great performance. This song was written by Steve Porcaro and John Bettis.
@@mimikinmiracle83 both
Safe to say Miles was the best dressed most fashionable trumpet player ever!!!
Many, many, many years ago my brother (who loves & collects records of every genre) got tickets for a tiny little venue in Denver called Ebbett's Field - it seated under 100. I had just graduated high school & was visiting him for a couple weeks. He took me to a concert at Ebbett's... it was Mr Miles Davis. Little did I know at the time that I was witnessing a legend. He was truly amazing. 🎺💐💞
I've always admired Miles for giving his horn a human voice.
What's you say
@@tamaragrant120 he said miles davis's penis speaks like us
O S hahahaha
Yes!!!
He speaks with his horn, literally.
He loves her❤💋 She is a force to be reckoned with ....
Yes she is❤.
You can really see each musician communicating in this it’s amazing
I was there. I'm feeling old. Thanks Miles
God bless you.
Chaka was initially not supposed to come to the stage for this song... But due to Miles' "strong request", she was forced to come suddenly from her dressing room. That's why, she brought lyrics written paper to the stage. It's funny story behind.
Sanjoo Ichijoo-ji Chaka should have stayed in the dressing room as she ruined Human Nature
@@skygazer6898 i've read a plethora of asinine comments on yt but...nvm
@@nevergiveup9321 erm, ????
well, it sounds like shit.....
@Jpkrao Her singing would have made a deaf man's ears, bleed
you people dumping on this obviously know nothing about jamming or improvised music. It is not your over-produced CD pop music perfection. 2 artists trying stuff and seeing where it goes. That's what can happen in jazz. It's not about perfection. It's about taking chances. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
shut up lel
Don't get no better than this real heavyweights.Improvised music love respect.Someome pls.tell me who's that on the saxophone.
Mando Fisher We know its not about perfection but this was so damn bad, she should have stayed at home.
@@OS-yg9fr Huh? Explain!
@UndergroundGrower UK Stupid remark from your side. What tells you Mando Fisher is old? And to call him/her a fool is absurd. Furthermore, your statement about the 80's is utterly wrong: cheesy? Please, explain.
I love the fun they're having!!! Chaka Khan got Miles Davis to smile!!!
DAMN!! its been 30 years since this performance was recorded. And still sooo freeesh!!!...
To see these two Great Legends on stage together performing in unison is an absolute joy. Miles Davis is arguably The Greatest Horn Player of All Time. And Chaka Khan arguably has the purest, most natural singing voice of the female genre.
I love her but she was off key here to the point where it sounds like it might have been deliberate. I know some people said Miles would rather a wrong note than be unoriginal, so she might have meant to be hitting wrong notes. You have to love her either way.
Chaka seems free in her improv. She’s like intentionally a bit pitchy but still brilliant. I love her- 💙
No one is ever intentionally pitchy
@@francismonroe969 Yes, I must say that I'm a bit surprised by her intonation. This sounds embarrassingly out of tune to me, to be honest.
@@pascaldeshayes5459Listen again …
@@pascaldeshayes5459 I'm guessing her stage monitor probably wasn't up high enough
No there was a period she was heavy on drugs, well she is always on and off. But, she has always been pitchy starting in the late 80’s.
I actually played a show with her. This show she was a mess!! Low register was great. High register was awful!
That Sax solo was freaking Killer!!! (Loved chaka and miles too no doubt)
That’s me…thx
Miles has a tone that no other trumpet player can duplicate, especially in the lower registers.
You can hear this in Sketches of Spain, a haunting melancholy sound.
Una
You should have seen Chaka when she was in her teens. This was before the Rufus days. She worked with another wonderful trumpet player named Turk in a band led by multi instrumentalist, Dave Cook. Back then you only had to hear her sing a few notes, and you knew she was destined for stardom.
This is a a crowned King of Jazz in my book.He opened many doors for artists who worked under and with him.Black music in general owes him a great debt of gratitude. An extremely talented individual on talent perhaps only Micheal Jackson and James Brown are better than him.A sharp dresser and never under anyone's instructions on what was style and good fashion taste.Salute to the king.
This is why they call it Playing your Instrument. They are playing an awesome game. Miles is so gracious to play with her like this... Although he lets her know early on that he is still the master. This is essence of conversations that musicians have with each other. This is amazing.
I remember being a 10 year old boy and listening to I’m Every Woman for the first time, while looking transfixed at a photo of Chaka Khan’s gorgeous smile. I fell in love right there and then and I’m still in love 43 years later.
All the other Chaka's fans will understand what you mean, me first

I don't if people realize it but there's no band like that today. Miles was a genius. Every performance he did with his band was amazing ! What a sax tenor chorus by Rick Margitza ! Just sublime !
let me correct you: you don't know any bands like this. there are some but they aren't on tv or the radio or whatever. check out snarky puppy for example.
I fell in Love with Rick! Oh my gosh, Such Beauty..🌹
Sorry I never saw him. Here in Canada back then the US musicians were always more publicised. He was right in my back yard in Ontario.
@@Mustis91 I know Snarky Puppy. I saw them few times. I've seen Miles on stage many times in thé 80's. Believe me, it's not comparable. Snarky sound good but they use a lot of technology to sound like that. Even, compare to Miles's band, they sound like students.
Yes! 😁

Miles Davis is a one of a kind musician Chaka Khan has always been a GEM vocalist 💎 RIP M.D. 🎺
Love this! Miles isn’t quite hitting everything he wants though and Chaka starts off a little rocky and you can tell she’s nervous but that’s what live music is all about!

Miles always loved Chaka voice so this performance is no surprise to fans of both...🥰🥰🥰🍷🍷🍷🔥🔥🔥
At this point in his career Miles was a complete Rock-Star who athletes and celebs fawned over and everyone wanted to be near the legend's presence. RIP GOAT🎺
I have always love Chaka Khan! I named my best cat after her! She has the most beautiful face and I love her voice!! Back in her Rufus days whoa! Tell me something GOOD!
Cute lead and follow with Miles and Chaka. Loved his face like "Got her!" Anyone thinking that Chaka was out of her league here is sadly mistaken. She is one of the most prolific Jazz singers, and the lift that she has in her upper register is incredible. She easily scales up to a B5 without even using her head voice, and her total range is ridiculous. She clearly didn't know the song, as she came out with written lyrics, and was enjoying the improv. I will say had she known the song better, it probably would have been a different performance. But they had fun, and it was a nice set. #mastersinsession
you're right on point she sing jazz scars and voice can soar
Chaka did a beautiful impromptu job. She grew up to Miles Davis's music and her dad was in a jazz band. That's likely why her voice sounds so jazzy. Another thing that helps Chaka is her superb enunciation while singing out the lyrics, confidence and willingness to patiently sing off the band's performance. She has a great ear for playing off the band. Anyways, Chaka is a pro on stage, make no mistake. Started her stage singing at age 17, and still current on tour... she's no rookie.
I see you know music and performance!
I love the way Miles and Chaka Khan get down...it was a good set...thanks for your comment. it really made sense...
she destroyed this song for me. How could she be so unprepared??
Obviously she was just in the area and was invited on the stage that same day. A lot of Jazz is improve and a lot of people, me in particular enjoy that aspect of Jazz which makes it very interesting to me
We are honoured to be alive in a world that Miles once shared with us.

Miles said that what you get on an issued album/collection is simply an ad for the live version(s). this is proof. what a stellar performance.
This too, is an ad for an experience no longer for sale.
Awesome Day for JAZZ and Miles in 2021
Miles, a great music maker, showed respect to chaka. Some times there is no time for practice. Bring what you got when called upon.
XXXXXOOOOO
Agree 100 %
Miles, in all his majestic greatness is still in awe of Chaka Khan; and respect, with that rare "Smile" of his, seen at 4:30!! This is where his 'humility' lies. He honors and respects musical 'greatness' when he hears it, no matter its source, genre, or expression. If it's "Good Music"; and I quote Duke Ellington, he bows down to it!!!
Aaaaaa
She s a role model for what you can achieve as an artist... followed her career for decades!
They are both as high as hell, awesome performance
史上最高のセッションです。もっと聞いていたいです。
can you imagine anyone else acting like that with miles? Chaka continues to be legendary.
Cant tell if he’s sweating or in tears while scatting with Chaka. Both some of the most truly inspirational people in music
It's the first time I see Miles smile ! I had the immense privilege of seeing him at the Nice Jazz Festival in 1987 (there were also Stan Getz, Wynton Marsalis and Dexter Gordon in this festival, imagine the atmosphere). Here in Montreux this Chaka's improv which would have been requested by Miles, and we can see how he appreciates her, not too often we see Miles smile.
Great! I had the same privilege, Nice Jazz Festival 1987. Ciao 👍
WOW.......wish I could have been there.......will never see that caliber of musicians together ever again......
Famous story when prince wrote miles and chaka a song ..just before this ..Miles tried and tried to get chaka in bed ..
This might be the dirtiest performance I've ever seen. I love it.
