I love how perfectly balanced that C# is! I've seen David perform live over 50 times...and it is so impressive to see him sing like this every night for 3 hours. So consistent! I love the comments about "feeling" being more important than what you hear as you sing. That has made such a big difference in my own vocal journey! Thanks for these awesome videos!

Thank you for posting this video. David himself has said that he has so much resonance because he has a “large head“ and he would joke about it.
In my opinion, David Phelps is physically engineered to be a Tenor.
Thank you for hosting these videos of him as the subject matter, because I so relate to what he is saying in this video.
I also have classical vocal training and I do understand what he says about the “sounds in your head“ and how they don’t sound normal… I have had vocal exercises with my vocal coach in college and I felt like I was going to pass out and I would have severe sinus pressure and buzzing under my eyes in the nasal cavities and I have a feeling that that is what he was talking about.
When he did that slide I immediately knew what he was doing… It was the placement of moving the sound on the phrase “here I am“ from the lower part of his torso and moving it into the head voice and once again that glorious Vibrato that resonates bulls-eye on the tone and does not fly to the sharp or go to the flat.

I' d only echo what's said at Your comment but also we must understand, that not only ''large, broad forehead'' mentioned before, helps to produce these kind of high, resonant and broadly sounding notes. It's also each vocalist's technical ability to connect Your body, also to slide easily to head-voice. That's more or less physical ''understanding'', that's the way how to describe it.

Yes! Physically destined to be a legendary tenor. His neck alone is thick which made his quality of tenor not thin compared to other tenors.

Just love watching David behind the scenes and how he produces his voice especially on the high notes.
He has such an amazing voice that even when he showed us how he eases his way up to Just as I Am he makes it look like a walk in the park.
His talent is God sent, world class, second to none.

As a teacher - I have found that students brand new to singing are highly intimidated at the idea of recording their singing voice. I'll work with a new individual for a few lessons before I approach doing it. And it's during my modeling that they start to gain a sense of what their listening for! Thanks guys!

Justin, I’ve heard about “thinning the chords” quite a bit. But HOW does one accomplish this?

    • @NewYorkVocalCoaching
      @NewYorkVocalCoaching  2 роки тому +5

Hi Kevin! Thinning the Vocal Cords means using less compression and using vocal registration that is more in the Mix Voice territory. The thicker the vocal folds, the "chestier" the sound. And the thinner the vocal folds the "lighter" the sound. Finding the inbetweens of this is the challenge and the goal.
There are many elements that go into the process of developing these inbetweens, or your Mix Voice. We recommend checking out Find Your Mix Voice Part 1 & 2.
      We hope this helps! -NYVC

I think that allows him to get that dark, thick Sound.
Most singers will brighten up the higher the note is, but David is able to "manipulate" that.

You can lift the Soft Palate or lower the Soft Palate, both are options! However, there are many benefits to Nasal Resonance (a.k.a lowering the Soft Palate) especially for high notes. These two episodes can provide more information:
Ep. 101 “The Greatest Vocal Exercise of All Time” - Voice Lessons To The World
Ep. 60 "The Soft Palate - The Return of The Ring" - Voice Lessons To The World
      Hope this helps! -NYVC

Betcha the larynx will always rise at pitches that are sky high at the top of your range like flageolet. Pitches that high like with Pikachu it’s almost impossible to lower that larynx back down

What you are saying is acoustically true and necessary! However, you want the larynx to come up comfortably, not jam or force it up. I train this with very quiet, high larynx sounds (flageolet, below the range that it would normally go).
