At 4:32 he actually holds the G the whole way through to the end of the song, that's Wes Hampton up on the B, but it's more visible when they repeat it the second and third time in the full video. Plus, you can tell it's Wes because he has a tendency to spread to a slightly more nasally sound towards the end of his upper chest/mixed sustained notes and the depth/rate of the vibrato is a little different. Great video!
4:38 you can hear Wes Hamopton and David Phelps sing B4, and at the end od the note, Hampton sing a tired B4 and at the same time there are a clean David's B4
By far the greatest tenor I've ever heard. Not even a contest. But he doesn't get the recognition he deserves cause he's a Christian singing gospel music
He gets plenty of recognition. Gospel music is a huge industry that makes billions every year. Don't be deceived into thinking that these are people who do this for free while working regular jobs the same as anyone else. They are performers who make millions.
@@nevergiveupnevergivein7655 I'd like to add that singers such as David Phelps were basically in the employ of Bill Gaither who probably made the most money from these wonderful singers. Neither you or I know what their contracts with Gaithers contained so your assumption that the singers with the Gaither Vocal Band made "millions" is purely conjecture on your part. LOL Man the last G5 was incredible and to have this kind of a person is an inspiration to be free and sing every range of your voice!! Great video :) Can you as well try bass singers and their low ranges?
Awesome compilation! Thank you!! Would you mind making a compilation like this for another Gaither tenor - Larnelle Harris? He has a more solid upper belting technique than Phelps (like D5+) and is a trained leggiero tenor. If you look at the Range Planet, there should be a thread I made on his range. He has some belted notes up to G5. Sadly some of his records are missing so there's probably some notes that we don't know of.
@@TheBassFreak Steve green is another one of the old Gaither tenors that has incredible range. I think he made it to G5 on one of the first two Gaither Vocal Band records. Another one to have fun with! Subscribed to see your future ones like this video! Looking forward to it
I'm fairly certain David can go higher than F/G5 in falsetto, but knows the limits of musicality within his own instrument and doesn't prefer to just shout the highest note he can. Eb5/E5 seems to be his highest "supported" mixed voice note("I'll Fly Away" has a great one). Such an amazing voice and a true master.
Actually he loses support around C#5/D5, but the Eb5/E5 still sound really good because although they're unsupported they have minimal strain/tension so they end up projecting quite well.
@@MissMartianDCAU His Eb5 and E5 are free. Support is a breath management skill so it doesn't have a sound. Being "unsupported" would mean he lost breath control and that's not the case. He doesn't lose support above C5/C#5. His highest free note is the E5, but he's consistent up to D5.
I looked through this whole thing and I was wrong. 12:16 I see now that he’s being sung over by someone else in the group. I thought that someone else was him. So it’s hard to hear the E5, C#5 and B4 that he did. My bad. 13:10 until the end of the video I thought was wrong too. But then I realized those notes you were talking about were him doing background harmonies. Because on 13:10 the lead note in the forefront was G#4 and I was like no way he mistook this for an F5. Then I heard the background harmony and I’m like ok now I know what you’re referring to. I think it’s just because it wasn’t labeled as a background harmony, so I wasn’t looking for it there. Same with the ones that came later. And the last G5 I was like “that wasn’t him. That was some lady in the audience and that was much higher.” but then I peeped that he did do it, but I couldn’t hear him at first over the lady in the audience lol. My apologies for my unbeknownst ignorance lmao. I applaud you. I find soooo many videos with soooo many mistakes usually. Thank you for being very accurate.

Its really interesting how similiar wes and david sounds when they blend in
I noticed that too
Thanks for someone mentioning this. I've noticed on a few videos they credit David with that note.
