Hi Kyle. Were you in Children of Eden with David? I just learned he won the award for Best Local Actor for his part in that musical. There is no end to his talent. I bet you were fantastic in that musical as well!
I went to a special Christmas concert for a homeless charity and he was a performer. Sweet Jesus. For the final number, he hit a note and held for longer than a human should be able to without their vocal cords combusting. People were concerned and looking around, wondering if he was going to need an ambulance when he was done. But, he just ended the note and started singing the next part. Easily the best vocal performance I've ever seen live.
Whether it's true or not, I heard he broke a sound system at a concert once. He just continued on without missing a note and was easily heard. He is one of the best vocalist I have ever heard.
In the part of the video where you explain that people's brains manage to assign the correct vowel to a word that's sung differently than usual; there's a name for that! It's called Top Down Processing. Top Down Processing is a way of processing information by with we take the information within it's given context and then interpreting it based around that. That one note without the context of the lyrics around it probably wouldn't have been interpreted correctly, but since there were other words around it, we're able to properly understand what they're saying
Is that the same idea as those posts that used to go around Facebook and Tumblr with all the misspelled words, but as long as the first and last letter of the word are in the correct place your brain has no problem deciphering it?
@@SixtyDoesStuff Yup, I think it is... Our brain tends to get a gist of a familiar situation rather than work out every single detail every time it encounters a task...
Honestly, I don't see how anyone can get through his songs without tearing up! It never fails to bring tears flowing for me! I love David's voice and those notes just do me in! :) He's by far my favorite male singer!
Sam, of all the voice-teacher-reacts voice teachers, you're by far my favorite. You're always encouraging, even when the singer is BORING (x8). And I think David Phelps is by far my favorite tenor. I thoroughly enjoyed this reaction/analysis. Thank you for the time and effort you put into your videos.
wes and david.... they are my favorite, but actually the whole Bill Gaither Band past and present. Will continue to support them for God's glory :) from: philippines
D5 @ 11:01 I literally said, "Mmph, I like that!" at the same time you did, so JINX! 🙃 That is definitely one of his best notes. I've listened to him for 2 decades and I've yet to hear a vocalist comparable. And for those who know, he's not just the effortless, Mr. BIG note, one-trick-pony guy as he's so often labeled. Everything else just comes so easy to him that what most people train forever to be able to execute even once, he routinely uses as throw-away material ( e.g. the perfectly executed riffs, the transitions in and out of the big notes, using the riffs as the transitions, etc. ). So good.
I am a listener, not a singer and I love watching you appreciate great voices. David Phelps is amazing, thanks for appreciating his awesome talent with me!
As someone who has been singing for a while in different settings, I love how you explain things! You explain things well and make it easy for everyone to understand.
I love seeing your jaw drop and a grin turning into a smile. Says alot about the vocal you are watching. He is so talented! I appreciate that you will analyze every genre. Your feedback is always respectful and informative. Thank you! PS- I was able to see the Gaither Family when I went to my Moms church. Wow they are all amazing!
I love your reactions haha, the way your jaw drops or you just start laughing at how good he is! Please could you carry on with your singing 101/vocal terminology series? I trust your views more than any other vocal coach on youtube!
Yesss that'd be really helpful, I still don't get what you mean when you say things like "narrow down a vowel" or "when it gets heavy/dark" or "light", etc :) I also trust you more than other vocal teachers!
I have always struggled to understand why it is that I can belt certain words better than others- and I thought it was always because of the vowel- but it never struck me that it could ALSO be because of the consonant with which the word begins! The consonant at the beginning of the word sets the tongue in a specific position that’s not easily moved 🤯🤯🤯🤯. I’m probably just dumb, but you moved a HUGE hurdle for me Sam!
Loved the video. You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned the opera style he went to in certain clips. If I remember right he was trained in opera singing prior to traveling with GVB
I am SO glad you did this one! I've shown David Phelps to a lot of friends. I really believe hes the greatest singer that the majority of the world will never know about because of his genre. I can tell you I've seen him love twice and somehow his voice had a purity to it that recordings dont do justice to. And I actually cant stand southern gospel, except for him specifically.
I dont know anything about singing, and I cant carry a tune in a bucket. Yet I am a subscriber because I just love the way that you break things down and I genuinely enjoy your videos.
Some of David’s C5s sound different because the performances are from quite some time ago when he was still an opera singer. His tone has changed a bit to fit more of his soulful gospel music, as opposed to the fuller, ‘beefier’ quality he had when he first joined the Gaither Vocal Band.
Thank you so much for this! David Phelps is probably my favorite singer ever and aspire to be like him vocally. What you said about the way he opens his mouth more as he gets higher to maintain consistency in the note was hugely useful to me! I can make sustained high notes not waver as much now!
Wow, yet another amazing analysis of an amazing singer. If it’s not too much to ask, could you make a video on a capella groups, like Home Free and/or Pentatonix? I think it would be interesting to critique and comment on multiple voices of various ranges, techniques, etc. Thanks for making great videos!
your commentary on vowels (along with everything else) is always so fascinating. human brains are wack for hearing sounds that aren't actually being made. if you're taking requests, i'd love it if you watched/analyzed literally anything jessica vosk has sung. her vowels consistently sound so interesting/pure to me (and my untrained ears), and i'm interested to know what it is about her technique that *makes* them sound that way. (p.s. i humbly recommend her 54 below performance of 'the wizard and i'. it's, uh, how you say... stunning?)
Wow, his voice is fantastic. I don't listen to Christian music so I've never heard of him. I, too, really liked when he went into vibrato. It just seemed to complete the note. I don't know if you would be willing to do a reaction of Jani Lane, the past lead singer of Warrant. He wrote all of their music, if I'm not mistaken and I love his music. Even though he is no longer with us his music is still great today, imo. Thank you for a very educational reaction as usual. You are great and I truly love this channel.
DAAAAAMN that zoom in on your face when you said "and analyzing" was the greatest diss towards all those "voice teachers" that "analyze" singers (when they actually dont know what they're talking about and juste fucking react like a fangirl to the video), thats why your channel is so great, you actually give insight about what we're seeing and you know your craft

If you like David Phelps, you should listen/react/analyze one (or more if you want) of his songs. Some of my suggestions to you would be The Dream, O Holy Night (one with the green sweater), or You Will Never Walk Alone. They are all live by the way.
I love these videos and hearing your break things down in a technical sense! I’ve been dying to hear you react to literally any of Shawn James songs! I think he has some of the best control over his voice I have ever heard!

I really appreciate your knowledge and reaction. Thank you for your honest opinion. I love hearing David Phelps. I would love to see you listen to his albums. Maybe you have. I just found you. If not, I encourage you to.
I love watching your videos and learning about vocal skills - I've always loved singing and had lessons when I was younger but learning about all the technical skills is so interesting! I would love to see you analyse Sigrid, especially when singing "Raw" - I wonder what you make of her Norwegian accent and singing technique - I find her really unusal.
David Phelps is one of the greatest singer ever. He never fails to amaze me.
The gaither vocal band too
@Adam Clark It's kind of subjective thing to say. There are too many great singers to choose just one as the best ever.
@@MultiKamil97 I agree but thats why he said right up front "in his opinion" lol

@@MultiKamil97 Yeh but we can choose between Justin Timberlake, neyo, Tyrese and say they're great but David Phelps is okay....
Oh hey I was in a musical with David last year. He's an insanely talented vocalist and so versatile. Also a super nice guy.

His rendition of “Oh Holy Night” is amazing.

His lungs are super human!

I'm convinced he has a third lung and that's why he can hold such long notes. LOL 😂
He's held notes out for like 17.something seconds. Crazzzyyyyy!!
