This was SO MUCH FUN!!! I have been singing for about 35 years, but was always kind of intimidated by the "Riffy People" for lack of a better word. I just thought they were "better singers." I didn't realize I could actually be able to do it too. Justin is an absolutely fantastic coach! Now I am pumped...
Woohoo! Love this! You totally can riff! -NYVC
Thank you for explaining riffs and runs. It's making me really listen to singers who inspire me. I hope my riffs get better and make my singing interesting.
I love how encouraging Justin is! Sometimes I get so in my head about my voice but I can always pop on a video, go back to the basics or learn something new and get spurred on. These videos are the best.
We’re so glad to hear this Jenn! Keep up the amazing work and be encouraged! 💙 -NYVC
What I did in the past is to half-time those videos on UA-cam, listen and find out every note and practice by myself.
This is much more systematic. You are fucking awesome. Justin I love you
I do the same thing! Lol It's a good strategy too, but this video sure is a great hack!
That is a great way to do it! -NYVC
That’s how I learned to bring style to my guitar playing. But it took A LOT of time to nail those nuances.
On vocals, I still have to fix timing issues in my runs. I need to get to the point where landing em spot on is second nature so that playing with timing becomes both fun and fluid.
Thank u Justin I've watched all 120 episodes and I've grown alot thanks to you 💕 God bless you
We’re so glad to hear this Mari! We hope you’ll be joining the VLTTW 10 Year Contest! More info at VoiceLessonsToTheWorld.com/10years with an extended deadline of May 1st! :) -NYVC
Justin, I wanna say thank you for this video. As a R&B singer, I am grateful for this video 🙏🏻
Thank you Annysha! We're so glad to hear it! :) 🙏🏼💙 -NYVC

We're so glad! Thank you Andrea! -NYVC
Thank you Justin! I always believed I would never hold a tune, then I learnt, I believed I would never be able to harmonise, then I learnt and I can spontaneously harmonise! Keen to be able to riff and run!! Making dreams come true!
Wow! Go Bethany! You've totally got this! :D -NYVC
This Is the First video of yours that I see, I loved every instant, BUT the vocale benediction at the end is true magic! So nice, so friendly, so brilliant!
The way you split this genius video up into sections is brilliant Much Love To You Justin👍.. and bonus points to you for putting me onto that Lady Gaga song!
We're so glad you enjoyed it, John! Thanks for watching! -NYVC
Thanks for your patience in teaching us how to do Riffs & Runs ❤ your videos
Keep up the great work, Shirley! 💙 -NYVC
This was so excellent Justin. Been a vocal coach for years & you described riffs so beautifully. I subscribed & will share your channel with my students. Thank you for your very generous content & incredible vocal exercises. I also want to thank you for your positive, & supportive demeanour. There can be so much ego out in the world of singing, & so much criticism that leads to people's inner critics being so strong that they don't even dare to try singing. I often have to call upon my psychology major to help my students (especially adults) to overcome damage done by overly critical coaches. You are the creme de la creme. Thank you for your great attitude & incredible talent as both a vocalist & pianist, but also as a very clear, concise teacher.
You have inspired so many people!!!!
Honestly couldn't agree more!!
Thank you for this incredibly kind comment, Dax! We know Justin will appreciate these kind words! 💙 -NYVC

Awesome video brotha 🔥🙏🏻
Glad you enjoyed it Angelo! 😄 -NYVC
It is so interesting because the three-note riffs you can even hear in native music, in Asian folk music and in Gregorian chants that are hundreds of years old!
Yes indeed! Great point Robaerto! -NYVC

I don’t sing and I have no intention of learning, but I definitely sat through this entire video. The “good for you”’s were awesome hahaha
Lol! We're so glad you're here and we hope you do start singing! :) -NYVC
One me favorite songs uses three note one. "diamonds" - Rihanna
OH WO-O-OH
OH WO-O-OH
And Beyonce does a lot of direction change riffs in "before I let go". One of the best turn up songs ever, super catchy riffs
Great points Eos!! -NYVC
Thanks Justin! I thought you were not going to upload videos anymore on VLTW. I'm so happy to see I was wrong! I started my singing journey around 3 months ago with zero knowledge, and I've been learning a lot with your videos. It's been a wonderful help and have clarified many confusing singing concepts to me. I love the way you explain. Keep making videos please. They teach and inspire. Thank you very much!
Hi Poly! Welcome! We're excited that you've started your singing journey and that we can be a part of it! We're definitely going to keep doing VLTTW. We also have other shows that we do that we hope will be helpful to you! Definitely check out our last two releases this month - David Phelps episode and our Linda Ronstadt episode! -NYVC

I’m watching this while getting ready for bed and I don’t think I’ll be able to fall asleep, because I am so excited to discover that I do possess the skills to do elaborate things like riffs, which I thought were beyond my ability as a choir singer. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
WOOHOO! So amazing! Yes you DO possess the skills to riff Marcia! Keep at it! -NYVC
Yay! As a vocal teacher this made me so happy to read. I feel the same way! Great exercises here!

Thanks for watching, King! :) -NYVC
Well damn! After watching this Justin made me feel I was Beyoncé! 😂😂 Nah but seriously, I've never known the science behind a riff, and now all I wanna do is practice these... Absolutely impeccable teaching method honestly!
Amazing! Keep doing it Ayesha! -NYVC
@@NewYorkVocalCoaching It's 1.56am here in the UK. I'm going to sleep, and the last thing I've done is gone over that last riff exercise so I can riff in my dreams! 😂😂😂😂🙈🙈🙈🙈
Love your lessons, thanks for making them so fun and easy to follow! These warm ups will help me nail Handel's All We Like Sheep's runs for choir next year.
You're welcome Diana! Keep up the amazing work! :D -NYVC
😍😍😍😍😍Love it
So glad you enjoyed it Duminda! :D -NYVC
Grace notes, shakes and other musical ornamentation started in the Renaissance era (c. 1500), and by the Baroque period a hundred years later became typical of the idiom - Handel, Bach, Purcell for example. The male countertenor voice was also a feature of those periods - and also the male soprano castrati of the Baroque, but that's another matter entirely!
Wow! Super cool info AntPDC! Thanks for sharing! -NYVC
Whoa yeah ^^
:D Go Lien! -NYVC
Instant improvement.
Woohoo! Great work Admirable! -NYVC
Watching this, and then rewatching SUMMERTIME SADNESS- SHAWN MENDES (one of his oldest covers), I notice how much he implemented these exercises into his cover. It's like he learned it from this video somehow lol
That would have been cool! :D -NYVC
Thank you so much for your videos. Can you do one about Alex Brightman voice on Beetlejuice the Musical?
We’ll pass this along! :) Thanks Jess! -NYVC
You are a cool dude
Thanks for your lessons. I need a help. "opinion and suggestions"
In my situation, im aware of breathy and nasal voice. Also the "vibration". Placing larynx. Twang. Fry. That's because of your videos. But i still have concern for my (1)sounding like nasally robot when recording. (Audio recording and video).
(2)when i speak or sing regular singing, my upper neck only vibrates, its hard to do chest voice but falsetto c4 to a4 and falsetto mask b4 to c5.
Hi Joselito! If you're hearing a "nasally robot" then you're likely just too bright, and not necessarily using too much Nasal Resonance. Try some darker sounds to find a resonance that you prefer. You might take a look at episode 17 to get you started. As for your Vocal Registers, it's tough to say what's going wrong for you. Maybe check out our Vocal Register Series, our Mix Voice Episodes, our Strain episode, or consider a Vocal Evaluation which we, offer as a service. We hope this helps! :) -NYVC
I naturally use grace notes. It either stems from singing too much 90s rock or just tightening up an old habit of sliding into notes lol.
As a guitarist I forget that there are also ‘standard licks’ vocalists use.
Grace notes are fun!! :D -NYVC
Great work Justin, fundamental riffs, wow! What is the maker of that piano you are using, it has a great sound to be so small?
We're pretty sure that's a Roland! -NYVC
This is super awesome and helpful, Justin. Thank you!
So glad you found it helpful, Greg! :) Keep up the incredible work! -NYVC
Great lesson,. I`m new at this and wonder how to squeeze this stuff in without getting out of rythem .. ?????
Hi Guy! Do you mean moving from pitch to pitch fast enough within a riff? This takes time to build up to. First, you'll want to sing the riff slowly, and then speed it up over time. Check out Ep. 3, Ep. 27, and Ep. 56 for more on Riffing! -NYVC
@@NewYorkVocalCoaching Doing a riff toward the word takes time. Doesn`t that throw off the musicians ??
I think my shower singing is going to get less boos and hisses from my family. Great vid!
Oh man! Keep up the great work Ahub! -NYVC
