Yeah whoops, sorry guys in Far Cry it's only a 7% increase. I'm obviously getting too tired and I highlighted the wrong numbers. So 10% is the best gain seen here.

2018: Why doesn't amd use gddr6?
2019: Why doesn't amd use hbm?
People are never happy
Mongocom right Radeon 7 comes out if they used gddr6 and less Ram it would be $500 AMD makes the card list it at $450 then drops it to $400 and people wonder why it doesn’t have hbm 🤦🏻♂️💁🏻♂️
AMD's bread and butter in the GPU market is that their cards have a good value proposition. Adding HBM or, to a lesser extent, GDDR6 won't raise the cards' performance enough to justify the higher prices of faster memory. AMD is a large corporation. I'm certain they had accountants run the numbers on different memory setups before they committed to the 5700XT that we have today.
because HBM is super expensive.AMD profits barerly anything from all HBM cards. That is why Nvidia went for gddr5x and gddr6 and only went for hbm on titan V (that is super expensive anyway).
Samething with raytracing,
When Nvidia introduced it, people hated them for it
But when AMD announced that navi 12 will support raytracing, people applaud them for it
Having seen this, the major benefit of having AIB card will be much cooler and quieter card. The performance gain may not be as significant as people was hoping for.
I guess it makes sense. Otherwise AMD would have done it. They have engineers developing this product!
I mean it was never the case in the past so why would it be different this time, but honestly the performance is solid already so quieter and cooler AIB models will be nice.
@@BombaJead Except starting with Turing, nvidia started binning separate dies for their *more expensive* stock versions rather than the traditional of stock cards being just baseline with meh performance. Pascal was pretty similar in someways too, but definitely saw a bigger help from better cooling than we might see from Navi.
After watching this video I chose the 2070 super.
The 4 years of warranty alone made the choice easy, I'm glad they're performing pretty equally.
I'm sad I didn't get the 5700 XT because I wanted to support AMD this time... But it wasn't worth the potential wait until mid September.
So not even with all of that WaterBlock mounting (and investment) + extreme overclock it can surprass a RTX 2070 Super. There you go, AIB won´t do mircales, RTX 2070 Super it is. You just made my life simpler, ordered it now! Thanks!
This really points to a bandwidth bottleneck (as usual with all AMD GPU's). Oh, and those 1% low drops with memory overclocking are likely from the timings auto-loosening when memory is overclocked (Vega and Polaris did this too). Additionally, it seems abundantly clear to me that Navi needs more mature drivers... Not trying to trigger those ridiculous "fine wine" BS memes though :).
Give it a few months for a new driver and Navi optimisations, then it’ll easily beat the RTX Titan no doubt :)
/s
got my 5700 xt to 2080 core and saw similar crappy gains so went oc to memory and oh, wonderful 5% extra perf (at 100% stable 24/7 oc) so overall, 2080 like result
I thought that fire looked familiar.
We got power play tables so hopefully we get memory tables next.
I would like to know if there is any possibility to tweak memory timing settings on this card, or any other graphics card for that matter. Is there some bios that can be tweaked or something like that? Perhaps the timings are pretty perfect already, in case of GDDR6 or HMB there isn't that much silicon lottery and no reason to not allow all the possible bandwidth and lowest latency possible. Though still it would be nice topic for a video to try to tweak those settings.

7% increase in fps is actually not bad, but unjustified hype spoils everything
its basically the difference of the 2080 vs 2080 s difference but for a 148$ +premium for new waterblock. That would be a killer deal when that waterblock gets a lower price.
People letting people spoil everything spoils everything. Smart people should raise above anything bad that comes from internet or other non personal communication. It takes mental energy, but it's worth it.
Unjustified hype didn't make that 7% any lower or higher. It only changed the perception in the minds of people. So nothing really got spoiled.
Well 2,2 Ghz vs 2,1 Ghz should lead to a more noticeable difference, i guess it's silicon lottery. (the guy that made the 2080 performance post had a 2,2 Ghz one)
@@gabrielst527 Based on this review, if 20% higher clocks give average 7% increase, then it's clearly have bottleneck somewhere and that GDDR6 memory is the only thing I could think of.
So going from 20% to 30% increase in clocks really would have only minor improvements, most likely going from 7% to 9% increase. Though it's possible that silicon lottery might apply to GDDR6 memory and with better clocks and timings it could really have significant impact. However I don't have enough knowledge on that.
@@starkistuna And you have to take into account not everyone ocs their cards either.
After seeing this I just went out and bought a 2070 super.
I simply can't justify waiting until mid September for the equivalent of a 2070 super in games.
The 1 year extra warranty (4 years total) gigabyte gives you makes it completely worth the $100 premium alone imo.... And adding Ray Tracing, better drivers, 2 free games just makes it hard to pass on the 2080 super compared to the 5700 XT.
I was hoping you would post this video, but was dumb enough to have never thought to check your channel. You guys rock..👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
You're probably also seeing memory straps, in addition to memory errors. The timings are probably at a lower strap once overclocked.
Does this kind of show that games can run well on pretty much all modern hardware and that poor drivers, non-optimized games and just generally bad coding is really a problem in this industry?
It's a huge problem, but it's actully mostly down to the customers who pre ordered games, and dind't refund them, when the pc port was found to be shit.
Due to the sunken cost fallacy/stockholm syndrome, which is exactly why the publisher's want you to preorder their games, so they can make as much money of ya, for the least amount of effort. And no, it's not EA that started this trend, it was actully Ubisoft.
Yep, it could be fixed if most gamers asked for obligatory Vulkan support in new games, that way the industry could push better optimization and all cards could shine.
Kane absolutely. Most new gen GPUs easily get above a certain frame rate in modern games, whether you’re using a 2060 or a 2080 Ti. You can expect great performance on anything newer than a 2060 tbh. You’re winning regardless.
The main thing holding the 5700XT back is drivers.
So not even with all of that WaterBlock mounting (and investment) + extreme overclock it can surprass a RTX 2070 Super. There you go, AIB won´t do mircales, RTX 2070 Super it is. You just made my life simpler, ordered it now! Thanks!
If you start a new game today, it absolutely makes the most sense to start with Vulkan and/or Dx12. However games launching this year started at least 3-5 years ago when it was a lot more sketchy. This is worse when you look at games that are already a few years old and launched before Vulkan 1.0 was even released.

Undervolting and slight overclocks might be a way to keep power in check and axial fans can keep the temperature in check.
Nah... just undervolt it and allow the max. boost clocks to be sustained for as long as they are needed.
You will probably get a performance uplift like this (around 5%), while removing the thermal limits and dropping power consumption at the same time.

The 5700 XT has surprisingly lived up to the hype. It offers about the same value per dollar (arguably better value per dollar) than the 5700, and runs roughly as fast as a 1080 ti for 400 US. This actually exceeded my expectations. AMD scared us with those initial price announcements, and the 5700 was a little bit disappointing imo, but the 5700 XT has turned out to be a quite pleasant surprise, performing better than expected, and at a very competitive price which is making most other cards out there look pretty stupid at current pricing.

Unless you're a beginner, anyone who's into serious watercooling will already have the rest of the loop which can be re-used until the fans and pumps die, and knows that you add £140 for the waterblock when getting a new gpu, it's not all about OC'ing, for me it's about lower temps and almost zero noise.
It looks like that 5700 XT has a memory-bandwidth bottleneck given the limited gain with higher clock frequencies. I was a bit worried about that: 256 bit and only 8 GB. That is not much for a $400-500 graphics card.
Exactly. This is why AMD didn’t feel the need to give it a beefier cooler to push the clocks higher, because it doesn’t have that big of an impact on performance.
It was originally planned to be a RX580 replacement at $250. But now AMD is overpricing it due to the unhealthy market set by Nvidia. Remember this is not the so called Big Navi chip this is still the low end to mid range stuff. Cards with wider bus will come next year.

Outstanding 7nm process. If you apply diffrences between transistor density of technology used by Nvidia and AMD, you would see Nvidia having similar size dies including Tensor cores.

So to summarize your saying an overclock on the 5700xt yielded a 7% increase which was better than the 5% increase from the new 2080 super from the 2080....🤣
Test with gpu cooler:
Morpheus 2 core
Pls its the best air cooler for gpus
It definitely destroys Navis efficiency, but anything that improves fps is a win for me.
I guess you have Intel
Nope. 2080 pulls 450 under worst case, 5700 xt pulls 280 worst case 100 more watts puts it under the 2080 still.

Hello. You can change the timings of the gddr6 with the amd memory tweak or overdriveN tool. Go to guro3d forums on the amd sub forum you have those tools there. Hope it helps. Great work as always
Ideally I want to underclock it.
@@Hardwareunboxed if you loose the timings a bit it won't get unstable at higher clocks . I don't know if these tools have been patched for navi so it's just a thing you have to check, trial and error Steve :). That AMD user style
I recently bought a vega 56 rx for a fair price. I am very pleased with her performance at ultrawide before I had a rx 580 8GB, I plan to stay with the vega 56 for at least 1 year until the 5700 xt mature more drivers and release new cards with better cooling system and higher clock. Whenever I see your tests I see the vega 56 next to gtx 1080 and rtx 2060 and saw that I made a good purchase. I love your tests because they compare in different scenarios with many different hardware. Thanks
Othon Paiva Good shout. I may do likewise.
Nvidia's RTX cards are really amazing in terms of efficiency, imagine the architecture on the 7nm node. I am waiting for the next gen for sure
lol
watch toms hardware review
Navi and rdna have better effiency like turing
And wait 7nm ... im waiting a 3080ti at 2000€ msrp
I trust that you'll not forget to mention in your next news video the untimely retirement of Jim of AdoredTV
As I understand it Jim's still going well, he's just changing focus.
Hardware Unboxed it seems changing focus means locking your videoes behind a 2$/month Paywall
it looks like he removed his AMDone video
he lost like 2k subs in one day
Air cooled 5700XT will be right there with the water cooled you tested here. I am personally water cooling but I was going to do that with whatever card I got. There is a big Nemesis 420GTS currently shoehorned into the front of my case (seriously, fitting required a Dremel and a hammer). It's more of a silent build so I'll tweak the GPU and CPU very little if at all.
Mine came out the box at 2119 mhz LOL good job little guy youre killing it
I think the card is starving at Memory bandwidth, maybe you can do better with the GDDR6 clocked at 16gbps, a shame that the memory OC is not working
VRAM test at the end of the video were showing the opposite, at least with the limited overclock/underclock options currently available
@@_Agosto_ Its because of the memory timings not higher frequency.
@@_Agosto_ the vram test at the end of the video only showed that mem OC was bugged...
@@AjrAlves "at least with the limited overclock/underclock options currently available"
I wouldn't expect any significant improvement with memory oc though, unless they screwed up something with rdna
*Performance Summary*
Average of average FPS from 13 games - Higher is better:
- 5700 XT = 106
- 5700 XT 2.1 GHz OC = 113
- 2070 S = 107
- 2080 = 116
Estimated TBP in Watts - Lower is better:
- 5700 XT = 260
- 5700 XT 2.1 GHz OC = 340
- 2070 S = 270
- 2080 = 300
SlavjanA 2070 super is much better normally though, the values are screwed up by forza
Clean and objective test, excellent. 5700 xt rocks
Waiting with antisipation on the custom boards. Just about to upgrade my pc from an Intel i5-7600k to the Ryzen 5 3600 with a Wraith Prism fan, on a B450 M/B. A mate is going to flash the bios tomorrow for me.
Looking to upgrade my GPU. I was looking at an RTX2070, but this new RX5700 XT really has me rethinking my choice. I'm going to hold out until the custom boards come out to see if they're worth it.
1800-1900Mhz with an undervolt of 995mV and around 17-1800rpm sitting at 73 degrees with the blower fan during a benchmark with an ambient temp of 25-30C.
Might want to try undervolting, just saying :)
So stock then :S
@@Hardwareunboxed if more games was like Forza or world war z
@@Hardwareunboxed It's just nice to let people know you can make the card run cooler and quieter instead of 84C at higher/louder fan speeds.
@@Tekagi502 Too much work for most people :D. You are right though. Looking at this there is no reason for AIB. UV and you will get higher core clock and quieter/cooler card. Wait for AIB for 3-4% more performance and maybe pay more.
I bet a asus strix 5700xt with it's cooling solution and factory overclocked would be great
I would really like to see a video on the 980 Ti from you guys! Right now I'm looking at building a new machine on a lower budget with a 980 Ti as I can get one with two years warranty at a much lower price than the 2060 super as the only refurbished part. It would be really great to see how well it holds up against the newer RTX cards especially with an overclock since those cards were known to be great overclockers.
Thanks for the video Steve. Could you let us know what voltage and power+ settings were? With the ek block.
How forza is so optimised for amd hardware
May be bcoz of xbox
But why don't other companies do that right
They always favour Nvidia cards imo
Most game devs optimise for most common hardware which is still NVidia.
NVidia drivers optimize by cutting corners, lowering quality and faking it into the end. I'm really amazed how little this subject is discussed and how silent the community is. Stockholm syndrome by Nvidia? Many people say "whatever man, its more FPS", then just lower your settings from ultra to medium when you play with AMD and voi'la.
Why there is so little image quality testing? When clearly people are paying literally tons of money to get the ultra settings run in enough FPS? Nvidia seems to be the most advanced and successful marketing company in existence.
I like many technologies that Nvidia has developed, but I hate the company and it's policies and greed.
It's not optimized for AMD hardware, it's optimized for ALL hardware, check that numbers, 130+ fps on 1440p with everything maxed is very good for a modern game.
Same as World war Z and all Vulkan games that have a good implementation (oddly enough, even bad Vulkan implementations still give a good 6-12 fps boost)
Consumers need to wake up and start asking for it in game forums.
Bigger market? Most people have Nvidia cards. Especially in laptops which is a huge part of the market today (we all know that students use their laptops for gaming more than actual work).
Juzu Juzu that’s a fucken lie lmao holy shit
So you spent
140 for a block
At least 200/250 bucks for Fittings, Tubing, Rads, Fans, Reservoir and Pump.
So it's a 700 vs 700 cards to be honest.
Well yeah, that was the experiment.
@@Hardwareunboxed it's interesting though.
Could you bring it under other cooling conditions?
Dry ice or liquid nitrogen, to extend it to the max possible?
Kind of, but I don't think that's exactly true either. For someone that's already invested in a custom loop, they already have everything but the card and the block. Or for someone buying all that stuff for the first time, they can re-use everything but the card and the block moving forward.
Either way I agree that it isn't really the most cost effective solution, but it does give an idea of the peak performance this card can achieve when not thermally limited.
@@Hardwareunboxed Could you slap on the Artic Accelero 3 or 4 on the 5700 XT? Some Reddit users are claiming that they are having trouble fitting the RAM heatsinks on, and need to find slimmer ones. Temps at 100*C under stress loads. I'd be interested to see your take on this more cost-effective solution and if, in your mind, it's better than simply using the board partner coolers when they come available.
I have watched a lot of videos about this particular graphics card. I have the reference design and all I had to do was there just the fan curve a small amount in order to keep temperatures down in a micro ATX case. I don't understand why people aren't waiting for new drivers to come out first because they could change everything. People seem to be forgetting that these is current drivers are only in beta
Please do 5700xt anniversary review. Nobody or few have done one yet that I can find. But good video. Thanks :)
Was going to go full Red this summer, but they lack the eye candy of them rays.... The 3600 is great just wish there was a Ray gpu in the line up. :/
Eye candy gamers are a thing.
Skyrim 45fps, 4k spoons, ENB, Rays to no end, 8k Dragons it's glorious! Toot! toot!! mfs!
Ray tracing is not ready even on Nvidia cards. The performance goes to shit and DLSS destroys the image. It's not worth it yet.
So 10 fps gain for the price of a water block and time setting up the OC......pass.
And still you can find many people talking about how it will be easy to get 2080 like performance from this :)
@@kiklop8362 lol also people keep widening the gap of "Like" performance to justify their statements
Kiklop even Steve said, for the price of the water block on top of the card, you might as well just get a 2070 super or 2080 and get more headroom out of the box.
Having to strap on a $140 block to match the nvidia competitor is not a good argument.
There is a 4th option, getting a $60 USD Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme IV VGA heatsink and a few small copper, or aluminum if you're cheap, heatsinks for the VRMs and vram modules.
Interesting thoughts on the memory holding it back. I’ve had extremely good luck on overclocking the vram on my card. I got it up to 950MHz rock solid and saw significant performance gains. I might even be able to go higher but that’s as far as wattman allows. I haven’t gotten around to doing any significant overclock on the core clock though. Using a Strix 5700XT on with EK block. Core is 1985MHz, vram is 1900 (950MHz), with a +50% power limit and a undervolt to 1.149v
Have a gaming X and used the RBE and PPT to allow me to go up to 2100 on the memory. From 1800 - 1900 on the default MSI slider, its never really stable and will eventually crash in games. It would crash at various points from 1900 - 2000 then after that hits looser timings and is stable through benches. Just playing about in timespy I had it completing with no artefacts with the memory at 2010. Was getting into the mid 70's on memory temps though. Maybe on water you'll have better luck.
Legend has it, Steve likes early comments.
1080ti performance for 399$, impressive AMD. Very good value.
Factor in the pump, the water block and everything else you need for water cooling and that 260W power draw and you have to ask yourself is it worth it
This requires pump, tubes, etc... this a $700 card for $700.. still cool though
You think the watercooler kit is free? Dream on fanboy.
@@SuperJosteen the watercooled rx5700xt here, where running at 45 degress at load with this oc.. so any aftermarketcooler will be 100% enough with achieving the same OC with only 20 to 30 higher temps depends on which aftermarket cooler.. like the 0815 red dragon or the HUGE 3 Fan DEVIL, you choose.
I didn't comment about no water pump or additional accessories. I said the 5700xt on it's own is still good value for the money.
Looks like the silicon lottery is a bigger factor than the insane cooling overkill.
Really curious to see how AIB coolers (or even the arctic extreme IV aircooler) can make Navi stretch it's legs.
I only just realised you have a stealth beard atm, it kind of blends into your shirt. Didn't notice it was so long :P
