This is the video that roasted ASUS so hard, they pulled a full redemption arc on their Big Navi and Ampere cards, especially on the TUF Gaming series. Now, they are literally the best in thermal performance. Thanks for roasting them to their senses! Bought RX 6800 XT and it *can't* get hot at all.
woaw :D I laughed so much on this video. Thanks Steve :D Btw how are we going to be "informed" about the strix? will there be a new video about it or just something on patreon?
Mind blown here! Too bad, it has fairly good asthetic but in 2019 using disconnected thin cooling plate just to cool the memory or VRM these day should be considered red flag. EVGA used this approach with their ACX 3.0 in the past and it was disaster, and this? Thanks for bringing this up Steve!
Thank you for the review of this product. Unfortunately I did purchase this card and was seeing the same issues you highlighted. I did rma the tuf card and went with the red devil instead. Thank you for bringing light on to this card to warn potential buyers.
I completely agree could this be the effect of the GPP I could be wrong though. I'd go the Sapphire route but I'm not into the way AMD launches GPUs 2 GPUs this year 2 GPUs next year no more complete line up like we are used to this crappy.
It's also worth pointing that the light blue/pink led strip on the shroud of the card is not controllable (no aura, no on/off switch nothing). It will esthetically ruin every build it's in.
OC? Nah, it's not even hitting the reference speeds! 🙄 Is there an inside joke on who can make the worst RX5700/ XT? I brought an XFX Thicc XT (non-ultra), it was cheap for some reason... Cheers Steve!😅 I agree that it is WAY thicker than needed, but it does work. It's boosting to 2085mhz when the advertised boost is 1905mhz (ultra's is 1980), by only changing the power limit. It will spend a lot of time over 2ghz, which is 250mhz above the 'game clock'. It doesn't make sense that a factory-overclocked card is running so slowly (thermal throttling?). It is quite astounding how so many GPU makers, are making so many mistakes, even well-established companies. It's not like GPU's or a new thing! I've noticed that all rx5700 heatsinks seem to have the same split fin-stack design, with tweaks to the dimensions here and there. Is the same OEM making the heatsinks?🤔
Please consider doing another small re-review or at least mention in another video when the Asus ROG Strix card fixes its power consumption problem. It would be really nice to know how it stacks up to the other models in terms of temps and noise once its power consumption inst so unnecessarily high.
In about 1-2 years a lot of these 5700s will be triggering the warranty due to memory module failures. This will bite asus in the ass and lead to a lot of reviews saying they will never buy another asus product again.

Just got the non-EVO card yesterday, new stock from amazon UK (expected EVO but..) tested v2 default and efficiency bios - efficiency just limit power to 180W which isn’t actually working in our favour. Why is that? So.. card actually works just fine with 86-90C on memory if you adjust curve to around 50% 2.5k rpm to stay there. 30% used by default is just not enough to put some airflow. I contacted ASUS and will seek for some help, regardless it was cheap at £260 and I’ll keep it.

Good choice, the Gigabyte Gaming and Sapphire Pulse seem to be the best 5700XT's. The Red Devil and Nitro+ are nice, but too expensive. The whole point of the 5700XT is performance/$ and at $440-450+ it doesn't make as much sense anymore. At that point you might as well pay the extra $50 for an entry level 2070 Super.
I'm looking forward for the RAW II results. Running that card since a while now, had no problems yet, except being not able to overclock the GPU without Wattman crashing the system frequently, so I've to run the card stock and to hope that AMD fixes it's issues one day cause there is quite some headroom for overclocking. The only thing I don't like about the RAW II is actually it's weight - it's really light, especielly compared to my Sapphire 270x Toxic, feels like half the weight, but didn't bother to find out the exact weight. But the temps were all good while the card was overclocked and stock even cooler of course.
If you already have a GPU bracket and cooler, this seems like a good card to get as you can just move it over (if it fits of course, not sure if the NZXT Kraken brackets fits these cards, or even the RTX cards)
Nice video Steve. I liked your little intro story. You also didn't hold back in what you wanted to review after the manufacturer didn't want to send the Tuff GPU out to you. Hopefully the videos you present to consumers will force manufacturers to take a second look at their products or come forward quicker with the fixes. I had actually bought an Asus RX 5700 XT before you reviewed it and it turned out to be faulty. I could be getting the Sapphire Nitro+ instead, although I would be interested in seeing the Asus fix. Good content as always.
Not a subscriber, but one of mine watched this and told me...send it back. I laughed. So then I had to check this out...and see if there was anything in the video I agree with. I have had zero issues with this card. I have it in a really well ventilated case and it has run cool. I don't find it that loud and after putting the dB reader up against the fans...still don't find it that loud. Very high FPS for a card that cost me $368. I have about 12 other GPU's including some RTX 2070 Super and 2060 Super. I find this to be the best deal on graphics card. I have paired it with an I9-9900kf as well as a Ryzen with x570 motherboard. It has not failed to impress me. Hate to see this card get a bad name since one person with lots of subs doesn't like it.
I wold like to show my appreciation of your efforts by writing this comment. Thank you for your dedication towards trying showing us as much as you possibly can.
I’ve learned not to trust the TUF line of products. Yes, they’ve had a couple of good ones but the bulk of it is not good for the money. Even more sad is that I’ve heard the TUF brand used to mean something.
Thanks for the video! I helped my friend to choose parts for his PC and the only RX5700XT available was the one in the video so i thought it can't be worse than the reference card... Well i'm glad he didn't buy parts for his PC yet and i told him to buy another RX5700XT card.
Reminds me of an ASUS AMD card that came out several years ago that only had most of the memory connected to any cooling solutions at all. Temps were taken from the ones with a cooling solution, so you wouldn't know unless you did a tear down of the card. The ASUS Matrix HD 7970 GHz. Blows me away that they failed to properly cool the memory of cards again. You'd think they would have learned.
This was very enlightening to see. I bought this card on a whim partly based on its appearance, and because up until this point I had no reason to believe there would be any major issues with the 5700XT cards in general. Unfortunately this card was a bit of a mess for me. It would constantly crash my system to a green screen and force a reboot when I'd tried to play a game or run a benchmark. I couldn't even monitor temperatures, due to it spazzing out once it was under any load that would get the fans seriously spinning. I can also confirm that this thing does get loud Wow! But it makes sense if this was all related to poor thermal performance. I didn't get throttling though, it just would crash or even make the display go blank. I ended up replacing it with an entirely different card. At least it looks nice!😬
It is unfortunate that when reviewers and users call out what some consider a serious design or manufacturing flaw, the mfg no longer wants their products reviewed. This hurts consumers and the companies bottom line long term by betraying trust. They just need to be honest about it. I'm more likely to order a product that I know has an issue if the price and needs justify it, than one that i later discover to have an issue.
I have the tuf 5700 XT OC, I haven't seen temps over 83°c @2060mhz for the junction and 63°c @1900mhz for the memory. 1100mah(-100) I did change up my fan curve though...
Unfortunately I'm experiencing pretty much the same, to make it worse our currency is weak compared to AUD. Buying a 5700 XT would be very cost prohibitive.
I've been waiting for this review for a while so thanks for doing it. I have this card and i also have my memory clocked at 975. With that clock the hottest i've seen is 100c. While that is hot i only get that hot while stress testing this card and only when i have this extreme OC on the memory. Otherwise on MY card i only see mid to high 70's on memory. IDK why your card is so different than mine and i've also not seen another card be able to be stable at such a high OC on the memory. Maybe i received a nice pull on the silicon lottery or you received a bad card. With that said the card is very loud for having a triple fan design and i do run mine undervolted to keep temps low so my card is running a setting of 2160/975 with 1174 mV with a plus 10% power draw.
I am grateful that guys like you exist who helps so many people from getting screwed off their hard earned money. I don't know if you feel it but this is the most rewarding part of what you do. Many thanks for looking out for us :)

Well, that's a TUF card to recommend...
I own an MSI RX 5700 MECH. I don't have the capability to test like you but in my every day use in a well ventilated case it has done very well. I don't know about torture test thermals but with stock fan curve in games I can't hear the fans over system fans. Don't recall exact temps to be honest but think it was around 70C give or take some after a long gaming session. Not scientific...just some experience from a novice.

Steve: Why you sweating so much?
Thank you for this video! I really appreciate the honesty. It's pathetic they wouldn't send you the card, but obvious why....
I canceled my Asus TUF just in time! Thanks so much! Steve
Thanks a lot Steve, saved me a ton of money.. 😅 I patiently waited out for reviews on this gpu & thank god I did..!!
The market is pretty pathetic in India & the difference between this & the entry level galax 2070s is mere 30$..
Thanks for your content, definitely happy to see this arrive in my notification :D
welcome to my reality, on my country shappire and powercolor top models (nitro+ and red devil) are among the CHEAPEST cards... and the "normal brands" all are over it, the msi evoke is way more same as gigabyte basic models
get the sapphire....its good
Same here, I was gonna buy as a good price on Amazon ..think I'll pass..
Sapphire is always a win in my book and my safest bet. Got an ITX rx570 and almost every one of my still-alive gfx cards are theirs with only 1 RMA (a 7750) :) my Palit geforce, XFX, Powercolor, Asus ones are all dead save for one lowly asus 5450 and one PC 3450 lol. Not to mention I've had my best RMA experience with them too compared to MSI but I heard Asus RMA in my country is way better now not requiring a receipt even.
@@arencorparencorp2189 Nitro+ is awesome. Before I had Gaming X and Nitro+ is superior in everything. It's insanely good. 5700 XT's have just drivers problems, be aware of that. If you don't want deal with troubleshooting, 2070S can be way to go. Unfortunately.

Ok, let myself out now.

YES!! Thankyou Steve for suggesting that other Steve has a look. I love a good Tech Jesus roasting and when GN said no more 5700XTs I was NOOOOO! But holy crap, that is a horrific result, freaking hell ASUS, I asked for a GPU not a BBQ. 😳🤦

Nice Video Steve! Is it possible to "fix" the card?
1-Add more heatsink
2-Waste money
3-Not Stonks

TUF : *hold my heat circulation*
woaw :D I laughed so much on this video. Thanks Steve :D Btw how are we going to be "informed" about the strix? will there be a new video about it or just something on patreon?
A video once Asus roll it out.
Thank you for being honest we need more reviews like this Again Thank you!
Thank you for the review of this product. Unfortunately I did purchase this card and was seeing the same issues you highlighted. I did rma the tuf card and went with the red devil instead. Thank you for bringing light on to this card to warn potential buyers.
Asus recently has been just having bad relationships with amd as of this year im suspecting theyre doing this on purpose lol.
Why would they sabotage profits and r&d costs and marketing. Maybe it's just a bad batch as in GPP bad.
@@spinkick9270 im obviously being facetious im not oblivious to that. But they really have rode off anchoring themselves with AMDs 7nm line.
I completely agree could this be the effect of the GPP I could be wrong though. I'd go the Sapphire route but I'm not into the way AMD launches GPUs 2 GPUs this year 2 GPUs next year no more complete line up like we are used to this crappy.
That would be so moronic, not even Asus would do that on purpose.
It's also worth pointing that the light blue/pink led strip on the shroud of the card is not controllable (no aura, no on/off switch nothing). It will esthetically ruin every build it's in.
"you'll be in for a 20 minute rant video from GN." I can't wait LMAO.
OC? Nah, it's not even hitting the reference speeds! 🙄
Is there an inside joke on who can make the worst RX5700/ XT?
-AMD Reference 5700xt: my temps are and will be the highest , period .
-ASUS TUF: HOLD MY GDDR6
Please consider doing another small re-review or at least mention in another video when the Asus ROG Strix card fixes its power consumption problem. It would be really nice to know how it stacks up to the other models in terms of temps and noise once its power consumption inst so unnecessarily high.
In reply to another comment, Steve did indicate that he would make that video.
What's interesting is that you are the first notable reviewer to do a video on the TUF 5700XT
You know you're a legit reviewer when manufacturers avoid you and not because of inappropriate misconducts.
And I am just sitting here and waiting for the Aorus premium edition
In about 1-2 years a lot of these 5700s will be triggering the warranty due to memory module failures. This will bite asus in the ass and lead to a lot of reviews saying they will never buy another asus product again.
They really let the TUF branding to shit eh. I love their Sabertooth stuff.
Sabertooth was something else. TUF is budget trash.
Not asking for a full review about a quick summary about XFX's new 3 fan THICCIII card, does it improve cooling and sound?
How many 5700xt cards do you have? Maybe 5700 :)
Always go with Saphire or PowerColor, can't go wrong with either!
i can already hear nvidia fanboys saying look how bad this card is and i can already hear amd fanboys saying its not a fair comparison and i can already hear asus fanboys saying its flawless and that asus priced it too low for what is undoubtedly pure perfection.
I'd say you've just about covered all bases there :)

I've waited long enough to decide which model card to get. Once again, it appears Sapphire will be the ones getting my money. Now I don't know if I should go straight for the Nitro+ or save a few bucks and get the Pulse...

I guess its having a TUF time getting cooled during gaming. 😅 was looking forward to an AMD - TUF Gaming themed pc build. 😞
Asus: Hit or miss, I guess we always miss, huh?
they did hit. themselves in the foot yes. :p
That's why hardware unboxed is so important , they don't give a damn about manufacturers and just tell consumers the truth , i love you guys!

I got Rx 5700 xt nitro+ and I have sometimes black screen when I am in game do anyone have same problems?
Well I was just arguing with someone why Asus is a rip-off. Thank you Steve!
You really can't make generalizations about brands. When it comes to X570 board for example Asus have the most bang for buck board whereas here its an absolute rip-off. MSI have amazing B450 boards and god awful X570 boards.
@@rdmz135 the thing is none of the budget x570 are worth it and easily gets outshined by b450 and x470

@@turkepic3637 Well I can agree that their "ROG" branded stuff is almost always a rip-off. The rest of their products are fine. This card is an anomaly. It just flat-out sucks.
The TUF line used to be almost top of the line.

Hi..What did u buy next??
You guys really do fulfill an absolutely essential role for people who are trying to buy products with money they worked for. Im grateful there are channels like yours and frankly people like you to make sure the sheeple dont get hoodwinked. Keep up the great work, i love you guys! This is a great counterpunch and a great way to get these large companies attention and let them know they cant pull fast ones on consumers. You know the worst part about all of this is that pc enthusiasts are some of the smarter people out there in the world and these companies still try garbage like this. Just imagine what the rest of the items you buy and use are really like and how much unbelievable greed is responsible for fueling such dishonesty and shoddy workmanship and corner cutting. Thanks for representing us HardwareUnboxed!
wanted to buy the TUF but waited for your review. Thanks for finally reviewing it. Wont buy it now. I will get the Gigabyte 5700xt. Love your work and keep doing your thing :D
Get the Red Devil or Sapphire instead. I'd go with the Sapphire because of that Trixx Boost app, but the Red Devil one is good too.
FenixROFL same, glad HWU made this video, I was between gigabyte and the red devil but really liked the TUF look, especially since I was going to get the TUF x570 which is one of HWU recommendations in the $200 range, to match GPU with the MB but oh well, gigabyte it is
@@4m470 Well the RedDevil cost around 30€ more. Wont spend that much more for it
Good choice, the Gigabyte Gaming and Sapphire Pulse seem to be the best 5700XT's. The Red Devil and Nitro+ are nice, but too expensive. The whole point of the 5700XT is performance/$ and at $440-450+ it doesn't make as much sense anymore. At that point you might as well pay the extra $50 for an entry level 2070 Super.
I have already bought an Asus Tuf ips monitor now i am slightly worried. Hope Tim review it someday..😐
Only asus or msi can make worse than reference cards.
Holy Molly, is this even legal? You're selling a component out of spec :s
If you already have a GPU bracket and cooler, this seems like a good card to get as you can just move it over (if it fits of course, not sure if the NZXT Kraken brackets fits these cards, or even the RTX cards)
It has to be tuf, when it's so hot......
It's probably TUF in name only.
Who's doing thumbs down on this? What can you possibly have agenst this video? It's basically a public service. Shame on you.
MSI: "My EVOKE is the works 5700 XT card!"
XFX: "No my THICC II is the worst card!"
Asus: "Pheh...amateurs..."
Tuff luck Asus. ^_^
Thank you for your dedication towards trying showing us as much as you possibly can.
this gpu is 324 right now in the netherlands. quite a bit cheaper compared to the other ones
Awsome, review. Very glad you did it. Big wave to your patrons :)
Thank you so much for just putting it in the title instead of click-baiting folk.
As more and more info comes out about different 5700XT's, I believe I struck gold with my Sapire Pulse. Great price/value IMHO.
Hey... what overlay are you using to see temps/clock speed?
Could it be a faulty one? Man, tnks for the review. Almost bought this one because of its abundant availability in my area.
1100mah(-100)
I did change up my fan curve though...
Unfortunately I'm experiencing pretty much the same, to make it worse our currency is weak compared to AUD. Buying a 5700 XT would be very cost prohibitive.
I would say if they refuse to send a sample it should just be automatic that its shit and you should not even bother wasting the time or money on it.
My thoughts exactly.
