    I ❤ how this came together and the colours you picked. I just got the Miya set of 56 (I think Miya is the parent company for HIMI as well) and am enjoying the consistency -and the fact they don't feel precious. I also have the R&L Zen brushes and they are amazing! Such a good buy. Highly recommend. Love this snowy landscape and will give it a try. Glad to hear power came back! Have a great holiday weekend with the family.

    FYI I have the 24 himi in the mint green case and I bought it about a year ago and it came with a nice white mixing palette so they solved that issue a while ago. I also bought the Anniegoni set of 56 as well and I LOVE both. Had to have the bigger set after I saw Lindsay trying it out....LOL My "want monster" escaped again!!

      I wanted that one, too, but Amazon was changing their prices so quickly that I missed getting the discount and went for the 24 set of HIMI instead. I just tried it out last night. It seems like it will be a bear trying to keep clean. I’ve already gotten some colors wandering into their neighbors🥴

    I did four identical paintings using the same pigments (actually copied your work with small size sun rising over a lake you did on vacation) and watched them while pinned beside each other on a board in a sunlit room but not in direct sunlight. The paint on each were Sennelier WC, M. Graham WC, M. Graham gouache and HIMI gouache. At years one, two and three, HIMI was fading and getting chalkier by the year with no changes in S nor MG. At year three HIMI was so faded and chalky it was a totally wasted effort as far as the painting went but a good education with, yes, no change in S nor MG. At five years the HIMI painting is barely visible and chalky as in thinly applied opaque pastel underpainting... barely recognizable as the same painting as the other three. No changes in S nor MG except, and I took pictures each year as a reminder of what I saw, oddly, the typical "glow" of the S did seem to increase while vibrancy was unchanged and both MGs remained the same... very vibrant. Note: I was experimenting for not only the light fastness but the application used. I painted all four opaquely and, yes, I did use a lot of WC to do that by not using white in the WCs but thick application to mimic gouache. One thing I learned from the test was that I can save a little money by only using MG gouache for "WC" paintings, if they make the color I need. I have, since this test, started using my MG gouache in WC style application and see no difference in the gouache and WC. I already knew they advertised as the same paint with the only difference in MG WC and gouache is the gouache has more pigment to make it opague (no opacifiers are used) and the gouache costs a bit less. This test proved that to me. No chalkiness has shown up on the MG gouache at five years. Also, while absolutely beautiful and, seemingly even more so over time, its too expensive to use S with a gouache type application. Could I have saved some money layering on S to get the opaque affect... maybe. In the end, S is still my personal preference in WC as I just love that "glow" I've not seen in any other paint attributable to the S grind be finer. Just beautiful to my eye. I do, however, wonder if the S is fading and paper is showing through which would account for more "glow" with that particular paint. I guess time will tell as I'm not taking them down. MG held its own in vibrancy. I like the more delicate, glowing, in WCs and opt for S or MG depending on the subject because they definitely match up in quality to my eye at least. And I've l finally found a use for my less expensive WCs other than doing trial runs of larger paintings.... paints such as Turner that just lay around collecting dust . I'll us them as gouache and hope they don't get chalky as the law says paint companies don't need to state the use of opacifiers on the ingredients. I guess once experiencing artist grade WC there's just no going back but YES! no waste now. Thanks so much for your super helpful videos. Sorry this is so long but I'm hoping it will help some curious artists. I've been following you since the beginning and you've brought me so much joy... strong word but true. I have always loved your complete honesty in reviews... you're my got to. PS: I don't know why spell check in utube is telling me I've spelled opaque and opacifier wrong... but utube is understandable. lol I'm sure there are other boo boos in this just because its sooooo long. I can see why its referred to as a "wall" to do a post like this but I hope those who take the time will find it useful.

    Hullo Lindsay, thanks for sharing this jelly gouache option. I have never seen a reason to ever buy jelly gouache, I believe that it is just a gimmick to lure the unsuspecting beginner or older users back to gouache who have abandoned the medium for greener pastures or better paints! I have painted with gouache several years and I have that love/hate relationship with it! Professional gouache is not necessarily a lightfastness product as it is supposed to be photographed and then thrown away! WHAT? Yep very confusing, but that is just another reason why I am not a fan of gouache. I love watching you create and you make working with gouache seem like a dream! I hope that I can overcome my bias and give gouache a chance down the road. I have purchased a tube of white DaVinci gouache for use in a watercolor painting I have been asked to paint. I will use it in a watercolor painting! You are slowly convincing me that I can use white without going straight to hell, but my early training is deeply engrained, thanks for sharing your amazing techniques and open attitudes towards painting with joy! Good luck with your backlog of mail and questions from your paying customers! Have a lovely day.

    Thanks for the great demonstration. Glad your power is back on.
    I love my Himi gouache. Student grade is fine for me and I still have a ton to use up! But the price was right for trying out a new type of paint back when I bought it. Since then, I've seen so many tempting brands of gouache in your marvelous demos.
    Btw, Art Whale has sets of jelly gouache and each individual color has its own lid!
    Idk if you've ever reviewed their gouache, but you praised their tubes of watercolor, if I remember correctly. Not that you need to buy another large set of gouache, but individual cups with lids (!!) would have been so useful (listen up Himi) especially for those of us who are painting from palettes, so not needing to open the whole set each time we paint.
    If I were going to try gouache now, I'd probably buy this set or just a few tubes of a different brand.
    Thanks again and happy holidays to you and your family!!

    What is gouache compared to opaque watercolor? Doesnt it dry out? Do you have a vid explaining its properties? I mistakenly got Paul Rubens opaque watercolors, 75.oo oops. and it dries out and cannot be put into pans as it shrinks bad when it dries out. Interested in the medium.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  6 місяців тому

      It must be your countries tax. I charge $5 USD, but some countries add a tax on which I have no control over. I'm America tax is added on the price after because ever state charges a different amount and some have no sales tax. Teachable collects tax for the locations that require it and remit it to those governments. I have no control over it. Where are you located?

They aren't air-tight, so the paint dries really fast. And it smells like hell. I used Himi once and didn't find anything good about it. I prefer to buy paint in tubes and put them in my own, air-tight palettes/cups.
