  • In this video, I will answer some of the questions I have had about gouache such as:
    How do you layer gouache?
What's the difference between Gouache and watercolor?
What's the difference between pro-grade and student grade gouache?
What does "fat over Lean" mean?

The painting and the story were great. "Amber Gambler" 🤣 I finally got a set of your signature brushes. I watched you use them for a year to be as sure as possible. I received them and wanted to tell you they are wonderful. I love them. What a game changer! You can definitely put a red feather in your cap about your brush designing skills!!! You are such a Sweetie. Thank You Lindsay.

Love this painting and how you create all the mixes with a handful of colours. I like the blurred background with the sharp foreground motif. Very effective!. You inspired me to give Gouache another chance through your videos. I am using Schmincke Akademie Gouache (€4 for 60ml 😉😳) which has pigment info and excellent light-fast ratings. They mix well, are matt and very pigmented, but they still can be watered down for a watercolor effect. I have avoided buying jelly cups, especially after seeing YT Cecile Yadro side by side comparison with Holbein. I would rather buy less quantity, good quality and learn to mix. You inspired me to paint a traffic light. Here in 🇩🇪 they are painted grey or green rather than yellow. And in parts of Berlin, the traffic light man wears a hat. He is called "Ampelmann" (Ampel is traffic light 🚦) and is very cute!

I’m really enjoying your recent gouache focus. I love watercolor best of all, but I’m working through your 30 days to better painting, and this is so timely!

I love this! I am new to gouache and your mention of fat over lean is easy to remember! I think that when Dan Smith was no longer the head of the company, lots of things weren't the same. I have a cousin who worked at the store before the family sold it. It was such a fabulous resource once upon a time! The catalogs and other information was so valuable! I'm not sure when the things about that line of paint started. I think it is great that it is available at other art supplies now. I used to have to send to Seattle or stop by the main store when I was in town... my reward for the long drive! I bought my first little Cotman palette there in 1995, determined to finally learn watercolors!

Yes! 🎉 It's here and I can't wait to start painting it. Not able to start painting yet, but still had to watch the video to get my fix in. 😂
We shall see how many times I watch it before getting the painting done.😂
As always love how you teach us and appreciate you sharing your talent with us. ❤

Hullo Lindsay, Yep squeezing the Lemon is what we say a lot around here! Amber Gambler is a little more high tone, eh? Still a grand commentary on driving through the yellow light! This is a wonderful addition to your month long challenge and your obvious success with it! So well done and we thank you for your opinions as always! I am even more antagonistic towards the DS company. I have had personal customer service troubles. I kinda hate them. I did give them several try's to correct their problems that I had with their paints, then with their lack of transparency with the whole Permatek paints fiasco and subsequent legal troubles (Still unresolved):::sigh::: Your a much kinder person, it is no wonder people like you! I do too! Please take care and have a lovely day!

Amber gambler...the story of life with my spouse, ha. The pinks and purples tend to not use lightfast pigments across the lines, with Daniel Smith and M Graham the main exceptions. So, get a quin rose or quin magenta gouache and otherwise, the student grade 18-color sets are fine, lightfastness wise. I'm surprised that you haven't reviewed the Himi tube gouache. But I'll say I tried the Himi tube gouache, loved it at first, but it separates pretty badly so I see why the use the jelly containers most of the time. Still, it's convenient sometimes to squeeze a little student grade gouache out of a tube. Daniel Smith lies. Holbein also lies -- they say pigments are lightfast when not and don't consistently use the same pigments for the same colors. I don't think any of the paint manufacturers would survive the scrutiny DS has endured with their reputations intact. It's all a ruse. So find the paints you like, use them and have fun!.

This is very timely! I just painted a gouache painting for the #sketchbookfloozy challenge that I am going to post. I love this medium and want to learn more about it. I will be posting my painting soon.

Fabulous painting. Thanks for the tips. Have you thought of doing a teachable course on gouache? Maybe dumbing it down, like loads, just a thought, I know there are a few in teachable so maybe I should just go and redo or do these, I think my mind has said nah you just can’t do paintings with these after failing rather spectacularly, ah my blown up Kermit painting, yep think the gouache got to thick. Still it’s fun trying.
