I used gouache in college, but didn't think I liked them. After watching your videos (and a thousand others) not only did I get out my gouache, but I ordered Turner Acrylic Gouache.... I'm love, obsessed. Thank you for your videos.

Had a watercolor teacher bad mouth Canson at the beginning of class. That's what I had. Felt embarrassed as it was all I could afford but didn't say anything. Later in class she was assisting me by painting on my cheap paper and commented, "What kind of paper is this? It's lovely." I told her and she just said, "Hmmm". Go figure.

That saddens me to read that🙁 I’m glad you showed her in the end and I hope that she was embarrassed and greatly humbled.
It also shows complete ignorance and lack of understanding as well as compassion on the part of that teacher.
Cellulose papers have qualities that can be good and bad but the sign of a good teacher is one that can explain how to work through those challenges and how to take advantage of certain properties that are beneficial.

I love you! Thank you so much!!! I’m a complete beginner and I’m not good at drawing yet. I am impatient and easily discouraged and bored and overwhelmed.
I discovered the joy of using gouache on one of my adult coloring books. I’m starting to use gouache in my gratitude/bullet journal. I won’t make masterpieces to frame and hang. But in little creative joys, I am building mental health.

    Good and Helpful Video!
Re tip 6: Recently while doing Plein Air I was short on time and my rinse water was getting too polluted (I didn’t want to use precious time to get fresh water) so I wiped my brush off on the clean damp portion of my paper towel and there was enough moisture to both clean and reactivate the paint without getting too wet.

What a great video Sandy. I have been working in gauche on and off for many many years, my Dad introduced me to it when I was about 10 years old. He was a graphic designer and worked in gouache a lot of the time for his design work. I love the control you can get with it as well as the more watercolour like washes. That said you have packed a lot of great information into this short video, some of which I didn’t know, so thank you for that. I am particularly intrigued by that sealant you use, how cool is that! I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had to rescue a piece because it’s got wet again! I really wish there were more hours in the day as I just don’t have time to spend painting that I would like. Ho hum… maybe when I retire. Thank you for sharing. ❤😘

I love, love gouache 😊 I have the same pallet you have there. I put a couple of drops of Winsor and Newton blending medium into each well and mix it into the gouache. This helps the gouache to not dry up and crack too much or not at all, in the pallet. I use Winsor and Newton gouache. 😃

If you are referring to JoSonja paints, they are a creamier acrylic and they cover nicely and blend well. But they are still acrylic. Once they dry, you cannot rewet them. The Sta Wet palette helps the paint stay wet longer while it is on the palette (hence the name!). But it will eventually dry. And it will ruin your brushes if you don't rinse them regularly. Been an acrylic painter for many years and have used many paint brands. The main difference is the amount of pigment they contain, and how many coats you need for coverage.

I think you’ll find it pretty good! It’s slick enough that you don’t get caught on too much texture, but it’s heavy enough and it won’t warp like mad. Good luck!

For white, I just picked up a 75ml tube of Lukas white for like 8 bucks. I was expecting it to be trash, but so far it's been a pleasant mixing white! Might be worth a try, since you go through so much white in gouache.

I’m a professional acrylic painter but I’ve never really worked with watercolour. I’m keen on gouche as a sort of inbetween medium but I wondered should I investigate your watercolour class before the qouche one so I don’t just have acrylic techniques in my head?

It's been a minute since I bought gouache for my comparison of the different companies, but Royal Talens was cheaper, and still pro quality. If you're getting student gouache, Arteza is the best I think. It's definitely still student quality.
