Doctor Sleep is the continuation of the story of Danny Torrance from The Shining. It follows up the events of Stephen King's 1977 novel while being inspired by Stanley Kubrick's legendary 1980 horror film, which is my all time favorite movie.
That being said, there were a lot of things I noticed in Doctor Sleep that you may not have picked up on, like the location from The Shining book that made a little cameo appearance, the reintroduction of Danny Lloyd, who played Danny in The Shining, a connection to another novel in the universe of Stephen King and more.
In this video I'll be discussing all of these potential Things You Missed and more, so if you dare to go back to the Overlook Hotel, then stick around for my full analysis.

    About Things You Missed
These videos point out some of the little details you may have missed in your favorite horror franchises, analyse their meaning and why they are noteworthy. Typically, I'll cover Things You Missed in horror movies, and Things You Missed in horror film trailers.
    About Doctor Sleep
“Doctor Sleep” continues the story of Danny Torrance, 40 years after his terrifying stay at the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson and newcomer Kyliegh Curran star in the supernatural thriller, directed by Mike Flanagan, from his own screenplay based upon the novel by Stephen King.
Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra, a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the “shine.” Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality.
Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra’s innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before-at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past.

Also, fun fact that the movie only slightly brings up; Danny actually is Abra's uncle because her mother is his half sister which is why she said it wasn't a total lie for her to call him her uncle (Jack had an affair prior to the Shining, which actually does add another layer to the relationship he had with his family.)
It also adds to the point that the Shining may be genetic.

      @Thewhitequeen0 4 роки тому +32

@@CZsWorld It's probably because Jack was never in the mom's life, so she and Danny would be strangers to each other besides blood relation. I think Stephen King might've only introduced it to establish why Danny and Abra had such a strong connection even as a little girl.
I do wish it had been brought up more in the story though, since it factors into Jack's relationship with Wendy and Danny.

@@Thewhitequeen0 also, the only reason Danny finds out is that Abra's great-grandmother (Momo) psychically reveals it to him as she is dying. Another reason why Abra's mother didn't know about Danny is because her mother died in a car crash when she was little and was raised by her grandmother. Her grandmother refused to tell her about her father most likely because she wanted Abra's mother to believe her own mother was perfect, not that she was the result of a one-night-stand

    **spoilers contained in this comment**
Jack was wearing a red jacket, but Dan was wearing a blue-ish gray jacket, and their plaid shirts look almost inverse of each other. I think it has a hidden meaning where, although their fates were similar, the way in which they went out were totally opposite. In the movies, Jack had frozen outside and never snapped out of his murderous rampage, whereas Dan died when the Overlook boiler exploded and he had snapped out of his phase I think twice (once to tell Abra to run, and again when he settled down on the floor and saw Wendy in his final moments). I think it's also interesting about the jacket Dan wore in Doctor Sleep; it is blue to some degree, which is typically associated with the cold, as opposed to Jack's red jacket, associated with heat. Now I don't necessarily like the movie as an adaptation to King's sequel (there were characters and scenes they made less relevant in the transition from book to movie), but I think it's interesting how the Doctor Sleep movie managed to reference both versions of The Shining (Kubrick vs King) and be able to create a film that encompasses both universes that were created.

    1. When Dan first comes to Frazier there's a sign that says "Elm Street"
    2. In the bar fight flashback Dan says to the guy he's beating up "You're going to take your medicine!"
    3. The scene where the Overlook is talking to Abra through Dan, the fact that he stops the axe mid-swing and has his brief moment of sanity telling her to gtfo, the whole "The boiler is going to explode and set the place on fire", and Abra talking about the fire purifying the hotel and knowing that Dan would be okay are all from the Shining book's climax
    4. Abra saying that technically Dan is her uncle is a reference to a larger subplot where it's revealed that Dan is, in fact, Abra's uncle due to her mom being his sister
    5. In the last conversation with Dick, Dick says "Ka is a wheel", which is a phrase that pops up a lot in the Dark Tower series. In the Doctor Sleep book, Dan offhandedly says "There are other worlds than these" in a conversation with Abra
    6. Snakebite Andi isn't just called that because of her marking people with snakebite tattoos. In the book she has a tattoo of a rattlesnake on her forearm (she's also in her thirties)
    7. When Dan is walking around the Overlook to wake it up, she goes down the hallway that the ghost twins appeared during the Shining movie, except the hallway is empty. They appear when Abra is running around, but I thought that was a cool little detail.
    8. When Dan's talking with Jack, he brings up the fact that he and Wendy moved to Florida because they never wanted to see snow again. In the book he's really hesitant about staying in Frazier because he's always avoided mountains due to what he went through at the Overlook. And there are a couple of times in the rest of the book where he can't sleep well due to winter storms reminding him of the storm that hit the Overlook, which snowed his family in.
    9. I personally thought that the scene where Danny was messing with the boiler pressure was shot very similarly to the scene in the movie where Jack takes out pieces of the radio

This isn’t really related to The Shining but in the book Firestarter the dads name is Andy and he can ‘push’ people, like snakebite Andi (making them sleep with telepathy) I just thought that was cool and I think Rose says “We haven’t seen a pusher in years” something like that.

Actually, in the Kubrick film the character of Horace Derwent is the ghost in the tuxedo that Wendy sees in one of the rooms with the other ghost that is wearing that creepy bear suit. He was played by an actor named Brian V. Towns. That was one little detail that the film adaptation of Doctor Sleep got wrong. I honestly have no idea who the "injured guest" ghost in the Kubrick film is supposed to be even though he does say " Great party, isn't it? " which is what the ghost of Horace Derwent says in the novel of The Shining.

That can be an omage for the movie Frankenstein (1931) because it refers the scene in which Frankenstein throw a little girl in wather. Just got back from a screening, and I really like how they essentially got to do two things from the book that didn't make the original movie: When Danny is overwhelmed and about to kill Abra and she brings him back for a moment saying "You're not Dan, you're the hotel" it's the redemption moment from the book where Danny tells Jack (I think pretty much the same thing) "You're not my Dad, you're the hotel," and he comes back a moment to say I love you and tell him to run. Also the boiler blowing up torches the entire place as King intended.

Hey, I do have a point that connects to your point about the Stair blocking scene. However, this deals a lot with acting in general - in college, I took an acting class. One thing we had to do in this acting class was create a scene simply using blocking per-provided.
This ended up making a lot of different types of scenes, some were pretty normal (husband and wife arguing over an affair) to messed-up and creative (a female mafia enforcer going after a client that didn't have the money, going as far as to threaten his family if he doesn't get her the money). The thing is that basing a scene off blocking only can have all sorts of crazy results despite the environment.
So, I have to assume that the writers didn't just make the blocking the same but mirrored the scene almost completely with the exception of characters and exact wording from "The Shining" and translated it to the situation in "Doctor Sleep".

Let's not forget that that the shine ran in Halloran's family, so he could have had a strong defense against detection ( otherwise the knot would have nabbed him when he was a child).
This is probably why the knot missed Danny, as Halloran kept teaching him defenses.

Ironically, the ending of the movie Doctor Sleep takes more from the ending of the Shining book, since in the book, Jack resists the hotel to such a degree that he ends up essentially killing himself, only for the hotel to take over his body and still send him rampaging after Danny and Wendy until the boiler explodes and destroys both Jack and the Overlook. This is almost copied beat for beat with Danny in Jack's shoes in the Doctor Sleep movie, only Abra and Danny are strong enough that she's able to bring him back and he's able to prevent the Overlook from correcting the boiler.

I honestly think we’re gonna be finding little tidbits here and there for a long time. That being said, I saw the movie last night and can say it was a GOOD movie. The casting for Wendy was SPOT ON although Halloran could’ve been a bit better. I think it’s a testament to the acting prowess of the original movie’s cast being exceptional. The little nods to the past in this movie were almost like seeing an old friend again which will make it re-watchable for sure. But honestly, it was just missing something IMO. There was not the sense of foreboding and dread that was present in the original movie, that almost Hitchcockian vibe that something terrible is coming and I think that’s a nod to the genius that was Stanley Kubrick. I truly don’t know why King didn’t like his adaptation, I honestly think it is one of the greatest movies ever made. Did anyone else wish they had spent more time at the Overlook in the new film? I think they missed an opportunity to really dive into some of those characters or the period vibe that the gold room gives off for instance. So much potential, but doesn’t quite reach it.

I was so pleasantly surprised by this movie! I expected it to be cringy Kubrik fan service, but they actually pulled it off.* And, history repeated itself. I liked this movie better than the book, too. Note: I think the casting of Wendy, young Danny and Jack was perfect. Bringing in Nicholson or someone doing a broad impression of him would have turned the whole thing into a stupid pun. The performance in DS was perfect, focused on the threat and the menace of Jack, not some childish, sniggering fan joke.
*With one exception. The Grady daughters are not and have never been "twins." They're obviously different ages visually and in dialog in The Shining movie and they're not twins in any book. Arggh!!!! Just because sisters -- who are obviously different heights and ages -- have matching dresses does not mean they're twins!
