The first film adaptation of Stephen King's novel Pet Sematary came out in 1989 and included a lot of references more obscure points in the novel and other Stephen King works and teased at one big thing left out from the book.
In this video I'll breakdown some things you missed in Pet Sematary. This analysis will include easter eggs, explain how the most shocking scenes were foreshadowed (including the ending), discuss how the mythological Wendigo was teased at but not shown, talk about some of the differences between novel and movie and why they are important, break down some of the symbolism and color motifs established by director Mary Lambert and show how this fits into Stephen King's universe as a whole.

About Pet Sematary

Based on the seminal horror novel by Stephen King, Pet Sematary follows Dr. Louis Creed (Jason Clarke), who, after relocating with his wife Rachel (Amy Seimetz) and their two young children from Boston to rural Maine, discovers a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near the family’s new home. When tragedy strikes, Louis turns to his unusual neighbor, Jud Crandall, setting off a perilous chain reaction that unleashes an unfathomable evil with horrific consequences.

Just watched it very nice also f for gage
F
CZsWorld I’m going to call this out right now. Not sure if you have heard this already and if so my apologies. I bet in the upcoming IT sequel/part2 that Audrey will get stuck in the same traffic jam that Rachel and Gage did on her way to Derry to go find Bill.
Woooooof
The sister Zelda was the scariest parts of this movie to me.
Still fucks me up.
She was actually a dude which made her look a lot scarier , they couldn't make a woman look that scary so they did it with a dude
Same. Nightmare fuel for life
OMG yes! Freaks me out every time.
Tanya Washington agreed. That was the only part that actually scared me
"See gage this is why they didnt save you when you went out in the road" lmfao I CAN NOT
Its so he wouldn’t be Aaron in Full House.
Then he said he was to hell for saying it lmfao 😌
@@ashhlelovesyoufletcher9438 ... yes, that is what he said lol it was a joke, calm down
@@lovelybones8179 yah, I know, I was going along with not against, I'm very calm, be calm
Sounds like something *I'd* say. 😆
I feel terrible for Gage, he’s so little and so innocent. Every time I watch his death scene(s) it brings tears to my eyes. Just like how a storm brings just a small bit of water to an ocean of sadness.
I don't want to provoke a shitstorm, but... to be honest, I never really liked Gage. Doesn't mean I want to have him run over by a truck, of course, but for some reason, I did not like him. I liked his older sister more (maybe because she's older, I don't like babies or toddlers in general).
But the kid who played Gage back then for sure did a good job.
@@thalia7104 same
A foolish as those who open the Necronomicon
Dumbass doctor shouldn't have messed with powers beyond his comphrension, just
He is also so adorable.
The original Pet Sematary is seriously one of my favorite movies ever. I'm surprised he didn't mention anything about that weird claymation face that materializes out of a pile of rocks when Louis is carrying Gage to the burial ground.
I think that's the Wendigo.
it looked like rachel’s dad
next up on "things cz missed"
@@tedbundy4201 It does look like Rachel's dad but I think it's supposed to be Jud. I heard a theory that it was Pascow trying to scare Louis into backing out by showing him what was going to happen to Jud. But I dunno if that's true.
There u go Church, play dead, BE DEAD.....then Gage, no fair no fair. The two best lines lol
Shayne Ritter Miko Hughes was so cute!
Yes
You forgot the most iconic “sometimes dead is betta”
@@SneezyReptar yep
I agree!
The reason Ellie is seeing and hearing ghosts is because she has "the shine" from the shining, think about it, people only gain the shine by traumatic events, and that event being gage dying in front of her eyes. That's why she can see and hear pascow, and she can see into the distant future.
But she knew about the cat being hit in the road.
I thought the Shine Is something you Are born with... Danny Torrance and abra had it before they experienced anything traumatizing... Don't know about the others with the shine...
That’s a good point. I never thought of that
@@terezacervenakova3512 Danny's arm was broken by his father Jack, so his was triggered when he was younger which made his shine stronger. Abra on the other hand was born with it yes, but it was strong because she's a half relative to Danny in doctor sleep. There's plot holes in some stuff I know
@Nikki M 🖤 definitely got heightened after his death tho, she could hear Pascow and see her father digging up gage. Dick Halloran in the shining says every kid has a bit of shine when they're born, sometimes they lose the connection as adults unless something traumatic happens. Look at IT with the losers club
I always took the "soil of a man's heart" quote to mean men are not always taught to show emotion properly and sometimes the love a man has can grow twisted and stunted, misshapen, but to him it is still precious because it is all he has.....
A wise man once told me you don’t want to be buried in a pet semetary
💀🎸
You don't want to live your life again?
Delta *ptsd entensifies*
@@austinhenshaw2140 nah
Douglas Colvin was a wise man indeed
So many things terrified me in this movie! Those trucks, Zelda, Tommy, that fight at Gages funeral, the maids hanging, the Micmac cemetery and lots more. I love this movie! I watch it today and it's like I'm watching it for the first time, it never gets old and it never will. Classic. They don't make movies like this anymore.
Something else that's worth a mention. There's symbology to the part when Gage slices Jud's mouth. When I was younger and watched the movie, I thought it was weird that he didn't slice his throat and went for the mouth. Of course later I realize it was because of the fact that Jud opened his mouth and told Louis about the evil at the burial grounds. Gage was basically shutting his mouth for him.
*I don't wanna be buried, In a pet cemetery.*
I don't wanna live my life again!
I don't wanna be
Buried, in a pet.cemerty.
I do, however, want to sniff some glue.
(*Ramones.!?**).!? 🎸 🎹 🌟.!???.!??.!?
This film is quite emotional for me. I've seen it so many times, I can probably recite the script by heart.
I've also read the book several times, but the film is what really gets me. I think it's because the casting of Luis, Gabe, Pascow, Jud and Zelda are so spot on. All of them have this way with their delivery that just brings out the emotion in the scene.
And four words have never laid heavier on anyone's heart: "No fair, no fair"
Zelda freaked me the hell out when I first saw it.
she fucking scares me more then the whole movie
Hell it still does today it's terrifying.
She was a boy a male actor, lol, If u didnt know 😂I watched the making of it called the path to petsematary it was actually a dude, 🤨 lol I was actualy interested I was wanting to know what was wrong with her, when I watched when I was a kid I'm weird
She's the freakiest thing in the movie.
But she's freakier in the new version.
I was genuinely sad when I first read the book and Gage died. Then I wanted him dead again by the end of the novel.
That part with Gage getting hit fucks with me so bad. I personally cannot watch this movie anymore after having a little boy myself. I guess it's sort of an irrational fear. Now the second one I can watch though.
"Sometimes, dead is better" great video, one of my favorites :)
I want Pet Semitary by The Ramones played at my funeral.
I know he's a good ghost, but Pascow scared the holy hell out of me. The part where he was in the door and then at the side of the bed, shudders.
More to the point why am I watching this and typing this comment while lying in bed😂
Same lol
I agree that part scared the shit out of me. I watched that movie for the 1st time when I was 11 and it gave me nightmares for years.
@@roberttipton10 Same here. Sometimes when I close my eyes at night I'm scared that Pascow will be there when I open them. He is the scariest figure I ever seen in a movie, and I KNOW that's hes one of the good guys but it doesn't matter.
@@newdeer same here he always scared me the most. That and her crazy sister
Clare O'Brien same. Not alone!! 😝
You, deadmeat and foundflix are collaborating sometime right?
Collaborating is a word
@coke man Yeah sure, buddy. Whatever helps you sleep at night.
@coke man u have idiot
Ah you watch them too
Collaborating is most definitely a word
IMHO the actor who played Gage was to adorable too be a convincingly evil zombie.
I met him last year at a horror convention! He’s still adorable, lol!
@@frodisgirl1882 yeah he’s pretty attractive as an adult lol, and Pet Sem and New Nightmare guarantees him a spot at horror conventions for the rest of his life
@@CarloisBuriedAlive Totally. I watched New Nightmare for 1st time 3mths ago. I was Amazed
That's precisely why he was as scary as he was. If you look at someone like Jason Vorhees (with or without the mask or hood) you get those spine tingling senses saying this guy is gonna slaughter me. You look at little Gage, and you're kind of disarmed. It's those types that are more scary IMO. Same thing with Damien from the first The Omen.
This is why I can never hear the "Hey ho, let's go" lyrics anymore without getting horrible flashbacks to the novel
I remember the final destination 3 roller coaster scene when someone says "hey ho, let's go"
“See Gage this is why no one saves your hen you go on the road, (laughs) oh god I’m going to hell” - one of the best lines ever said
Lol then im going to hell to fir laughing
I literally lol’d when he said this 😂
Zelda is going to scar my subconscious again
I just want to see The Wendigo in the new Pet Semetary Remake
I think you'll be happy.
Same bro same
Yeah I saw the Wendi go on one of the books that Louis is reading in the trailer so I think it is
Same. I really want to see it so mutch!!!
Oh i thought you said you wanted to see the remake
Solid Review! This is one of my favorite horror films from my childhood, and it was my first Stephen King book as well. The actor who plays Judd is amazing! Stephen King once mentioned that the only novel he wrote that really scared him was "Pet Sematary."
This is one of my favorite Stephen King movies I was watching it on AMC sometime back in Halloween and they were posting facts throughout the movie. One of the facts mentioned was that the painting at Rachel’s parents house was actually a portrait of Zelda as a child. Super creepy that Gage was wearing her outfit, since she tells Rachel that she and Gage were gonna get her! 😳
Even creepier is that there is a cat in the painting with the young Zelda that looks just like Church.
I wanna see a Dead Meat crossover
Same
Oh i watch dead meat
That would be great
Yes hat would be amazing content
OMG YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES
We don't really need to see the Wendigo, just feeling its presence alone is much better. Just like the Shining, we know there are ghosts in every scene watching them but we don't need to see most of them or all the time, the camera does the trick.
That's pretty much how the wendigo is in the novel, it appears 3 times in the flesh but is consistently present, and its only fully present once, the other two are a flashback were jud says "I saw something I will nevers forget, I'm not going to tell you what" and when jud and Louis are going to Bury church the wendigo is described as being in the edge of darkness so Louis couldn't make it out, infact the ghosts in the shining appear in flesh more than the wendigo in pet sematary
We do see them in the Shining though.
True, but just what to say I want to go because I think I went to go does look pretty cool and evil-looking and that's just what to say I want to go because I think I went to go does look pretty cool and evil-looking and that's just enough
I mean the ghost following Danny from behind. The camera does the trick of them being watched. Besides some people believe that maybe they are no ghosts, every scene with them especially Jack involves mirrors.
@@jwnj9716 If there are no ghosts, who let Jack out of the pantry then??
Holy shit I lost it at the anime style cuts with Louis killing Church and Gage. That made a sad moment so hilarious. Thank you for that.
Yellow is something I usually associate with old, rotting things. Something that has spoiled or as Jud would say, soured.
Everyone gage was a CUBS FAN we must pay our solemn respects 😔😔😔

The Frankenstein quote is also a nod to Fred Gwynne for playing Frankenstein (Herman Munster) in the Munsters.
What is the munsters?
RaeTheGaeTM It was a television show similar to The Addams Family in the 1960s. Fred Gwynne played Herman, a humorous clumsy version of Frankenstein’s monster. His wife Lilly, played by Yvonne DeCarlo, was a Vampire. She was a bit more grounded and serious. Lilly’s Father, or Grandpa Munster, was a vampire similar to Dracula. He made potions and was similar to Grandmama from the Addams family in that regard. Eddie Munster was Herman and Lily’s son. He was a werewolf. They also had a character called Marilyn, I believe she was a cousin. She was very pretty, and looked normal. The joke was that she lived with The Munsters, but she looked normal. They were similar to the Addams family in that they were very kind people, and very outgoing, but people were immediately turned off by their appearance/home, etc. They have strange pets, and hobbies like the Addams family, and they live in a creepy house. In the pilot episode the actress playing Lily Munster (she was Phoebe Munster in the pilot) actually looked like a knockoff Morticia Addams.
did you say youtes?
@@stevenbacon-cheddar9914 🤣
Another fun fact: Fred makes fun of his fake Maine accent from this film in "My Cousin Vinny." By misunderstanding a N.Y./New Jersey accent. Also starred in "Car 54 Where Are You?" filmed in Bronx, New York.
That laugh in the woods sounds like Bellatrix Lestrange

In 1989 I discovered this was not a good movie to watch before a long midnight walk home..
Same
I can watch it alone in a pet sematary close to a indian micmac burial ground.
(The micmac history is strange they probably meet the early europeans vikings).
@@Sam-Lawry it's cemetery
@@warfare1101 In the book and movie it was spelled semetary.
You missed when the wendigo kicks a tree down infront of Louis! You can hear it walking then it pushes the tree down in front of him!
That's true
When the wendigo.kicks a then it pushes the tree down in front of him!
The fight scene at the funeral is one of the most heart rendering sequences ever put to both paper and film.
The anime style of the last bit did it for me. Loved it.
Louis didn't try to give up on Pascow. the nurse was saying 'oh it won't do any good' while Louis was barking orders.
The part where gage cuts Jud Achilles tendon is the only thing from Stephen King that actually scares me
The little girl's terrible acting, scared me the most.
except that stephen king never said in the book about Gage cutting Jud tendon just the movie
Now that I now more about the wendigo's role in the story, I do understand more behind King's reason for why he originally didn't want to publish the story.
"It just spirals into darkness and despair, it just seems to say nothing works,
and I don't agree with that."
Though I'll stand by the idea that this comment is kind of hilarious,
because contrary to most horror in general, especially modern horror,
the wendigo in Pet Sematary isn't an omniscient god who just sadistically torture to death the characters who are powerless
to stop it and might as well just roll over and die.
The wendigo does force his hand a couple of times in indirect manners, but in the same vain of Ares from Wonder Woman (2017)
"I give them ideas, inspirations, but I don't make them use them....
...they do that themselves."
Pet Semetary is literally the reason why I want to build a tall fence with a gate in my driveway lol
You missed the fact that the painting in Rachel's parent's house depicts Gage and Church....
The 1989 movie is much better than the new one. The new one lacks the deeper meanings of grief and a lack of character development.
No Stephen King Cameo.
it felt rushed. Church and the backwoods behind pet semetary are the only improvements. Everything else blew.
Yeh & Steven King also remade The Shining 'cuz he thought the 1st one with Jack Nicholson didn't capture it correctly. He was right. The 2nd one was much better!
THEY KILLED THE WRONG CHILD IN THE NEW ONE!!! HOW DARE THEY!!
Church is so cute like look at him what a fuzzy little baby
The Rabies reference didn't make it into the original , but it did in the remake. John Lithgow said it at Ellie's birthday party. You can hear him talking about a St. Bernard that got Rabies.
When Rachel dreams of Zelda, there is a ladder that leads up to an attic, and when Louis is in Jud's house, Gage throws her off from the attic.
Fun Fact: According to the the shooting script and King’s original story, the shot where Louis gets out of bed; and is in an undershirt was originally not scripted that way. Dale Midkif was supposed to be shirtless, but it was apparently thought that because Midkif was in quite good shape at the time, his physique would be distracting.
One of my favorites horror movies
Not gonna lie. The “scene” made me cry. It was so heartbreaking.
someone once told me yellow was a colour of mourning and death in some native american cultures, might be why they use yellow so much here
Scribblesea, what do these tribes think of black? Our culture sees it as a mourning color. I worked with a lady who hated yellow and finding her an Easter card isn't easy. Yellow is like the main color. Gage's t-shirt in the first scene has thin yellow stripes on it.

the way gage fell after he got the needle in his neck SENT ME
When gage and Church died, i cried alot alot
Gage and church are the cutest villains I have ever seen.
Finally a video on the details of this story!
One question:
In the book Jud admits he does not remember the correct number of steps in the final section of the path up to the Mic-mac burial ground.
The steps are cut into the rock (Louis even wonders How and if the tribe were tool-bearing) with gravel on
the steps, presumably from the reanimated corpses coming down the path. But twice in the book Jud misremembers the correct number of steps and is off by one step.
What does this detail mean??
Does it mean Jud is not the reliable storyteller he seems to be? He does, however, manage to remember every other detail of his long life correctly.
My other guess at an explanation is maybe each step represents a resurrected corpse? If so, How would the step be carved out (referring back to Louis' own question about the steps)?
I don't think the Wendigo is a stone cutter on the weekend and I don't see these shambling reanimated bodies taking the time to chisel out a step on the way over to cut some Achilles tendons.
Thoughts?
That wendigo in the background freaked me out a bit
I remember watching this with my friends as a kid. When it was at the part when Judd and Louis went to bury Church and Louis asked what that and Judd said it was just a Loon, my friend asked "What's a Loon?" and I said it was a crazy person. My parents cracked up and told us a Loon was a bird but I legit thought it was a lunatic. 😄
Seems like the youngsters today didn't find the 89 Pet sematary too scary . I'm 33yrs and first watched it on vhs back in 1991 at age 4. and it traumatized me. I was too afraid to rewatch it and avoided it till 2006. Honestly, I still get the chills watching it and can't unless the light is on.
I've watched this movie when i was 12. First time And also last time. It was even hard for me to watch this video, tbh... I'm 30 And i haven't seen scarier movie to this day...
Anybody else notice that on Martha the Rabbit's headstone it says that she "Dyed?" I'm wondering if they did that on purpose as the rabbit died at Easter time!
@Abigail Blake same here
2:53, I’m totally going to be that guy by saying it is the first time he brings his son up to the pet cemetery, but it wouldn’t be the last.
Great video. Pet Sematary is my favorite King novel, and I love the film so much. I'm 37 now, and I grew up watching it from a very early age, and holy shit did it scare me. Yes it has its flaws, but I still absolutely love this film. Zelda will ALWAYS creep me the fuck out. Can't wait for your next video!
Does Zelda show up in remake?

I love how for that final sequence you used anime songs

Don't know if this is the metaphor they're going for with the yellow, but yellow roses usually symbolise loss or lost love.
Steven King does a cameo in every movie
FYI the wendigo appears 3 times in the flesh but is consistently present, and its only fully present once, the other two are a flashback were jud says "I saw something I will nevers forget, I'm not going to tell you what" and when jud and Louis are going to Bury church the wendigo is described as being in the edge of darkness so Louis couldn't make it out, so don't expect every scene in the remake to have the wendigo, although it'd be pretty cool if when Lois has just arrived the wendigo is hidden in the trees as an Easter egg

For Full House where Gage was annoying. 😏
But i liked Miko Hughs in New Nightmare & Mercury Rising.
Even Kindergarten Cop
I forgot he was in Spawn too. 🙄
I always thought, why didn't the Creed's erect a small front garden fence to prevent a similar occurrence after the first time?..... To be fair, the scene where Gage is killed is a little ways down the road, and I am unsure if it was actually on the Creed residence.
I’m reading the book now and it happens where he goes down a slight hill on the lawn towards the road but the last amazing day they had was where he taught gage how to fly a kite in a field
Just another amazing video, thanks for making the video, i didn’t noticed the Cujo reference

Bruh, that anime cut tho 😂 here's hoping we get another one. Ever seen The Gate?
I was born in 87 and absolutely loved this movie growing up, i havent watched it in probably 15 yrs. I rly need to watch it again.
I was born 2004, watched it at 5 (trauma ensued) just watched it and wow it's got me excited for the new one
I was born in 1988 the year before it came out
It came out when I was 9 and my best friend and I watched it during a slumber party. Scared the LIVING HELL outta me. I didn’t sleep right for like 3 years. And my best friend’s dad made it his CAREER to scare the shit out of us every chance he got. He’d crawl out of a dark hallway as if his back were twisted and shout our names. Omg, that asshole! 😫😂 Needless to say, this is my all-time favorite horror film. Spines down. 💀
I was really sad Gage died. ;-;
rockerin' haha that’s awesome! I was NOT a fan of the remake unfortunately. The original is still “spines down” my favorite horror
Dark humor is the best humor. 3:16 is amazing.
I’m I the only one who remembers Louis see what I thought was the Wendigo when he was taking gage to the burial ground. I remember a see a ghost face with horns that tried to scare Louis. Anyone else remember that?
Yeah I remember that, I read th script of the movie and there was sussposed to be a scary, eyeless face floating in front of Louis and towards the screen.
Respects for Gage, but I'm a born and raised White Sox fan.
I was high last night and I thought pascow himself was telling me about the things I missed in this video ...thanks for this video man
Ok, hear me out. Ellie's psychic abilities is actually her Shining and the Wendigo is actually just a form of Pennywise as it has the same effect on the town.
Please do this for more classic horror movies!!!!
