That's the problem with an, effectively, perfect movie/story, given the genre it was made for. You literally can go nowhere but down. It is the pinnacle. So far, the siren song has been resisted. The other unavoidable reality, which also seems to have been recognized thus far, is that the louder fans clamor for, and demand, a follow-up movie/tv-series/book/whatever, the more loudly and viscerally they will turn on whatever is provided in response to said demand. It's almost like, for these "fans" it's not really about getting the demand satisfied as it is demanding, itself. And when the demand is met, they get angry/irrational, because they have nothing more to reasonably demand. But they have to "demand" so it becomes irrational. My head hurts. Gonna go watch some silly, pointless pet videos to recoup...
@@Agg1E91 I get your point, but for me this movie was not perfect and it has a lot more it can do with the lore. But I am not demanding a franchise, it just suprises me the wasted potential compared to other conveyor-belt garbage that comes out.
If I get a nickel for every time when Sigourney Weaver portrayed as a director of a secret organization and dies by the most random way in a 2011’s movie, I would have 2. Which is not a lot bit still weird.
The thing that no one talks about is how all these types of roles that is needing to be sacrificed, have already died somewhere around the world. Either from accidents or other reasons, this happens everyday. So logically sacrifices are not really needed anymore.
True but the ancient ones are there for the show they are the audience watching the sacrifice/show, in real life many horror happen everywhere at everytime yet we still watch horror movies even though you could argue there's enough horror in the world to entertain them it doesn't seem to be what they're looking for

This is Your Best Bit yet CZDub, and I have loved what you do for quite a few years. Your analysis of Coraline helped me and my granddaughter form a bond. Thank you, and I appreciate what you do. This video touches on something that always bothered me in "Cabin in the Woods". By their actions, the main protagonists virtually offered sacrifices to the Ancient Ones, by killing off the Office Workers, so why did the ritual failed? Especially if, as CZ said, if some of them can be seen as fulfilling the same five archetypes as the main protagonists. They even threw in bonus kills since all of the Office Workers end up dead at the end of the movie., and I dare say that those deaths were entertaining enough to please the Ancient Ones.
@@APackOfHungryGhosts I like to think of Tom the intern as the virgin. And if I remember correctly we don’t see him killed, he’s last seen in a monitor holding up a sign asking for help.
The Ritual requires the following: 1. 5 young people who fit within the established archetypes. 2. They must be warned by the harbinger and must choose to ignore it. 3. They must enter the basement and activate one of the artifacts. 4. They must be killed by the corresponding monster. 5. The Whore - Defined as a female who has sex with one of the males after the artifact is activated has to die first. 6. The virgin must be the last one alive. So the problem is, the staff were not warned by the Harbinger, they didn't play with the artifacts, and they presumably are not having sex to fit the archetypes.
@@xmoore5659 1. There are a lot of young employee's. Tom the intern for example or Lin the chemical department girl. 2. Everyone who works there is briefed on the nature of the ritual. Continuing to willingly work there after being told of the dangers of the job could easily meet the requirement of "Ignoring a/the harbing's warning." 3. Someone, obviously the staff, put all those artifacts down there to begin with. Also the whole cabin scene must be reset and cleaned up periodically. Which implies a cleaning staff whose job would put them IN that basement returning moved artifacts to the basement (IE their hands on them). 4. It is NEVER stated that they must be killed by the monster that they've summoned; only that they must die and in a certain order. Thus why the director tells Dana to shoot Marty at the end or the world ends. If the monster they summoned was required then killing him herself with a gun would not do. 5. The whore is defined simply as someone sexually active or promiscuous, it is never stated that she must have sex after activating an artifact. And she never did activate an artifact either btw, Dana did. Also your closing argument that the staff doesn't meet the criteria because they aren't having sex is ridiculous. A lot of the employee's wear wedding rings, Hadley says in the opening sequence his wife just babyproofed the house. Any of the sexually active employee's could be "the whore", just as any of the young one's we see without wedding rings could be "the virgin". Tom the intern or Lin the chemical department girl for example.
Because the Ancient Ones want a Sequel. And they aren't getting it. Because the director and crew are gone. "The Ancient Ones" (Horror fans and their Money) are just destroying the Stage. The Entertainment can't come back if we destroy the flow of Money and stop the film crews.
I, for one, want a sequel. To be clear, yes, I am aware that it would most likely be terrible. But I really want to see at least a few more of those monsters interacting with the main characters.
I love this movie, one of my favorites, I already lost count on how many times I’ve watched it. A second one would be great were the organization did managed to kill the sacrifices. This franchise has so much potential and the possibilities are almost endless.
8:17 is not a giant monkey. It's the Hunter from Left 4 Dead.... The other special infected from the game (Boomer, Smoker and the Witch) are also there ;)
@@Wolfbane382 also it’s the reason he was picked for Thor. His speech before his ill fated motocross jump was the hero moment that Joss Whedon used to cast him.
All of the dumb decisions made by the victims can be written off as being manipulated by the organization. The thing I could never get behind was why the creators of the facility would ever have put in a "PURGE" button! What reason would ever justify creating that option???
From IMDB: Going by the name of the button itself, it is a popular theory that the button was created to eradicate all the monsters by having them kill each other. The button was intended to be used when the building is clear of any human beings (maybe after they have hidden in a room accessible from the room with the button). While it is questionable why they made the button so easy to be pushed, the button is an obvious satire of the eleventh-hour deus ex machina in horror movies. On the DVD commentary, even co-writer Joss Whedon mentioned in a tongue-in-cheek manner that "[there] would totally [be a] system purge technology if you had a bunch of monsters". In other words, there is no explanation as to why and how easily Dana and Marty are able to find and push the button, but as the movie satirizes the clichés and tropes of the horror genre, this plot point was introduced so as to mock those horror movies in which the protagonist find an object or device at the last possible minute that is able to best the villain. It also is a poke at the Big Red Button trope-the activation control of choice for any truly powerful effect.
The parallels between the victims and the staff was something I'd never considered or seen explained before. It adds yet another level. Along those lines, I want to point out that the staff also had a scene where they picked a monster. So many parallels and I never noticed.
You forgot the best parts lol. Like when they did the lottery the one girl argues that she chose zombies and they remark back with canibalistic zombie family. And that Sanderson wabted the mermaid and ended getting merced by the sane creature he wanted!

The movie was filmed in 2009 but wouldn't be released until 2012. That's why Chris Hemsworth doesn't have abs like he did in Thor. The film had trouble finding a distributor and Hemsworth's worth fame helped the film find a release
It's been a minute since I've watched this movie, but its a big fave! If I remember correctly, it's not just his drug use, its the fact that the organization missed one of his stashes, so it couldn't be laced. That plus his constant high blocked his receptors, making it harder for chemical coercion to work on him lol.
I saw this movie when I was 11 and I was so intrigued by the lore and loved how there was literally every “horror movie monster”. its so underrated imo and wish there was more content related to it
I thought of a theory the other day about this film and the belko experiment being in the same universe. Cabin in the woods represents old school horror, and the belko experiment represents the new school horrors like Hereditary and such. Perhaps the third instalment might be a prediction of where horror might go....?
Im not sure why i felt the inclination to look up cabin in the woods again, but im glad I did this is a great video and a great dissection of the tropes and subverted tropes of the movie.
I remember loving this movie when it first came out and i was a teen, but i didn't know enough about critical analysis to perfectly articulate why outside of just "isn't this interesting that underneath the obvious tropes in horror, there could be a hidden intention?" That prospect really fascinated me And it took me watching your video to notice that the organization was perfectly set up to play the roles of the ritual, like holy hell were there a ton of layers to this movie ❤️
I was so happy to see this in my feed, its one of my absolute favorites. All because my dad had me watch this blind. I had no clue what it was about going in. And its how i reccomend it to EVERYONE. at 8:17, that is not a monkey, that is actually a hunter from Left 4 dead 2. If you're a fan of the game, if you look closer at that scene, you'll find the tank and boomer there too!!
16:21 They subtly and rather quickly explained that it was not what they had given him that he was using. Apparently he had traded it for a favor and got an untainted score later. They even mention something about really screwing up.
I like the fan theory that Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly/Serenity and The Cabin In the Woods all take place within the same universe and that their events match up with one another. Like the Ancient Ones are just Old Ones, the first demons to walk the earth like Illyria and that after Angel pissed off the Sr. Partners these demons were released onto the world. However, since the end of Angel, the Initiative from Buffy Season 4 have been sacrificing people to these demons to keep them from waking entirely, thus we get Cabin In The Woods. However, when that all fails and the Ancient Ones are released, humanity is forced to flee the planet for a new star system. This leading into Firefly. Also, the Alliance is actually secretly controlled by Wolframe & Hart, as well as River Tam actually being a potential Slayer whom they are trying to brainwash. River Tam does sport many Slayer-like abilities, such as her strength, fighting ability and psychic powers(Slayers have prophetic dreams and can communicate through dreams, not the same as mind reading but still). And during her battle with the Reavers, whom are assumed to be demonic in nature due to the influence of the Wolframe & Hart controlled Alliance, River Tam is "called". Her powers are fully awakened and she becomes the first Slayer to be called in over 500 years since the fall of Earth... just an interesting theory.
No exaggeration I find something new every time I see this movie. I've spent so much time trying to take in all the monsters in the facility. And we love Sigourney!

The comment section did not disappoint 👏🏽 The cabin in the woods is by far my favorite horror film.
If I get a nickel for every time when Sigourney Weaver portrayed as a director of a secret organization and dies by the most random way in a 2011’s movie, I would have 2. Which is not a lot bit still weird.
This and Paul, both great movies

@@chrismsmalley2626 I forgot about that one.
Not a movie, but literally in Marvel’s The Defenders lol
The thing that no one talks about is how all these types of roles that is needing to be sacrificed, have already died somewhere around the world.
Either from accidents or other reasons, this happens everyday.
So logically sacrifices are not really needed anymore.
True but the ancient ones are there for the show they are the audience watching the sacrifice/show, in real life many horror happen everywhere at everytime yet we still watch horror movies even though you could argue there's enough horror in the world to entertain them it doesn't seem to be what they're looking for
Millions of UA-cam comments are made every day. So, logically, your comments are not really needed anymore.
The harbinger is such an iconic trope that all I can think of is "You don't wanna go down that road! Lotta history down that road!" From Southpark.
"Or was it that road?"

This is Your Best Bit yet CZDub, and I have loved what you do for quite a few years. Your analysis of Coraline helped me and my granddaughter form a bond. Thank you, and I appreciate what you do. With regards to "CITW",...perhaps it was "Marty" who was "The Scholar" and "Hayden" was "The Fool?. Check Marty's insights while they're en route. He was spittin' philosophical stuff while rolling blunts. It may have been a coinkidink, but his "thinking-outside-the-conformity-box" saved him. Sort of. Let's just say that it kept him alive longer. As for the brainiac Hayden, HE DIDN'T CHECK THE BACK SEAT!!! Big Woop that he can

16:00 It is explained in the movie why Marty's weed makes him not susceptible to the chemicals that the organization pumps in. The natural cannabis counteracts the chemicals. That's why they have to try harder to get Marty, and that's why he makes it to the end with Dana.
I love how in this movie Amy Acker is there describing the old ancient ones, and in Angel the tv show her body became possessed by an ancient one called Illyria

I was about to comment that. It's the l4d2 version, you can also spot the witch, boomer and tank at one point too.
One of two possibilities: 1. There was no virgin among the staff to fit that role. 2. There was a virgin, but they were not the last alive.
@@APackOfHungryGhosts I like to think of Tom the intern as the virgin. And if I remember correctly we don’t see him killed, he’s last seen in a monitor holding up a sign asking for help.
The Ritual requires the following:
1. 5 young people who fit within the established archetypes.
Continuing to willingly work there after being told of the dangers of the job could easily meet the requirement of "Ignoring a/the harbing's warning."
Bro had me at “Emo Boy Summer” 😂
I, for one, want a sequel.
To be clear, yes, I am aware that it would most likely be terrible. But I really want to see at least a few more of those monsters interacting with the main characters.
But the world ends at the end of the film. Or at least, it's about to
You can go ahead and be in the small pool of people licking windows and eating paint chips, then.
@@CuidightheachODuinn What does that even mean XD
@@marcusblackwell2372you say that like a horror can't take place during the end of the world
Spinoff would be better, such as a sacrifice in a different part of the world.
The other special infected from the game (Boomer, Smoker and the Witch) are also there ;)
The ending never disturbed me, if we can defeat the individual evils we can get together and defeat them all.

All of the dumb decisions made by the victims can be written off as being manipulated by the organization. The thing I could never get behind was why the creators of the facility would ever have put in a "PURGE" button! What reason would ever justify creating that option???
why do we even have that button?!
@@waynemetheny5279Yes, that is exactly what the OP asked.🙄
@@joelspaulding5964 It's a reference.
From IMDB:
Going by the name of the button itself, it is a popular theory that the button was created to eradicate all the monsters by having them kill each other.

As a Kevin, I can confirm that we should be feared as ancient and vengeful gods.
I think it would be cool if we got a prequel of sorts like themed in the 60's or something.
That would be cool. A movie about how the organization got created!
With a lot of backstory about how they're the only ones who know, down through the ages.
The parallels between the victims and the staff was something I'd never considered or seen explained before. It adds yet another level. Along those lines, I want to point out that the staff also had a scene where they picked a monster. So many parallels and I never noticed.

The movie was filmed in 2009 but wouldn't be released until 2012.
That's why Chris Hemsworth doesn't have abs like he did in Thor.
The film had trouble finding a distributor and Hemsworth's worth fame helped the film find a release
Actually It was this movie that got Chris Hemsworth the role as Thor.
It's been a minute since I've watched this movie, but its a big fave! If I remember correctly, it's not just his drug use, its the fact that the organization missed one of his stashes, so it couldn't be laced. That plus his constant high blocked his receptors, making it harder for chemical coercion to work on him lol.

I thought of a theory the other day about this film and the belko experiment being in the same universe.
Cabin in the woods represents old school horror, and the belko experiment represents the new school horrors like Hereditary and such. Perhaps the third instalment might be a prediction of where horror might go....?
I would give every dollar to have 15 of these movies. We could just have the same movie 15 times but with different monsters

How many people would like there to be The Cabin in the Woods 2?
Calling the hunter from left 4 dead a "giant monkey" is pretty funny
