Mike Hanlon was the resident historian of the Losers Club; a watchdog that stayed in Derry after It's initial defeat in 1958 to keep an eye out for any possible return. In this video I'll go through the entire chronological life of Michael Hanlon and do a complete breakdown an analysis of his character.
including the difficult tensions that he encountered with the people of Derry
This will cover the entire known history of Mike from his birth to his death. Please note that this will only analyse Mike as he is written in the book. I will show clips from the movies as a visual aid, but for the purposes of Horror History, the books are canon!
I'll be explaining how Mike became interested in history which led to his role as the librarian, pointing out some of the stories of old Derry's past told to him by his father, Will Hanlon, and researched by Mike as an adult, analysing why he never could have participated in the final fight, breaking down his story, what scares him most, what motivates him and how he ties into the narrative.

About IT Chapter Two
Evil resurfaces in Derry as director Andy Muschietti reunites the Losers Club-young and adult-in a return to where it all began with “It Chapter Two.”
The film is Muschietti’s follow-up to 2017’s critically acclaimed and massive worldwide box office hit “IT,” which grossed over $700 million globally. Both redefining and transcending the genre, “IT” became part of the cultural zeitgeist as well as the highest-grossing horror film of all time.
Because every 27 years evil revisits the town of Derry, Maine, “It Chapter Two” brings the characters-who’ve long since gone their separate ways-back together as adults, nearly three decades after the events of the first film.

I’m a bit upset that most of Mikes history research abilities was given to Ben in the first movie. I love Ben but Mike would’ve been the better historian considering he stayed in Derry for the 27 years. Also Mike is the real Losers Club leader Fight me 🥰
tbh i don’t think that there really is a leader sometimes a character will be more in charge than another, although ben and eddie typically don’t take charge
I wanna touch on this real fast. I think they were trying to balance things out from the previous mini series. Not just with those two either. I feel like most of the balance was given to ben, bev, and mike. For ben and mike specifically, ben didn’t really have a purpose in the 1990 version. He was just ‘the fat kid’. In the 2017 one, they change the story to say that both mikes parents died and that he is homeschooled and lives with his grandpa. Mikes background is that he is a homeschooled orphan raised on a farm and the only time he mentions his future is when he says he wants to go to Florida someday. As sad as it is, he probably didn’t have the right education, enough money or people skills to have a life outside of derry. That would make him perfect to be the one who brings them home. He also tries to justify leaving the group after the fight because hes an outsider and should stay that way but of course at the end of the movie he knows hes loved and valued by his friends. If i were a homeschooled orphan on a farm who lived in the dark aftermath of my parents death and was finally given validation by a group of peers, I’d do the same thing Mike did. And mike gets his happy ending, or it’s heavily implied he did. With ben, his happy ending was with bev. He doesnt have much else going for him in the movie except his interest in history. Again, if i moved to a new place and did some digging around and found some super suspicious shit then id keep on digging and digging more. Anyway im sick in bed and bingeing IT stuff so sorry for my useless rambling lol.
@@malkyyy3418 I think what they're trying to say is everyone had their own role. As far as the 90s version, they at least stayed true to what everyone's specific skill/talent was. Ben was the architect and Mike was the historian (Bill-writer and Richie=comedian). The only outliers are Bev, Stan, and Eddie, as their chosen professions weren't things we got to see them exhibit as kids.Once you take away being a historian from Mike and give it to Ben, only for Ben to grow up and still be the architect, they literally HAD to create a whole new story for Mike to make it make sense that he's even there. As the story is written, there has to be the 7 of them to play their parts, otherwise, with all the rewrites, I'm sure they would've just written Mike out because I have no idea why they did what they did in the revamp.
He is the mother of the friend group 🥰
No need, if you read the book, Bill is always the leader of the losers club, Mike was last to join so no way could he become the leader. The story is driven by revenge for Georgie, its Bill that makes them promise to come back if pennywise is not dead, neither film does justice to the story itself, like so many SK books.
Lol I love how Mike is such an important character but then the films treat him like a background character. He hardly has any lines😹
He has a bigger role in the 2nd movie
jashard wallington yeah but in general for a while he’s hardly even recognized. He has like no lines for the first movie
As opposed to the miniseries where when they’re kids he literally doesn’t show up till the rock fight and then right after they all decide to go into the sewers after he shows them his picture book, and in part 2 when they’re adults were supposed to believe Mike and bill were the best of friends
Exactly
Facts like he was the center of the novel. He brought the losers back together & he totally became a nothing character in the films smh
Mike in the first movie: *gets picked on by bullies*
Mike in the second movie: imma about to ruin this clowns whole career
XD yup
right💀
p
IT: IM THE EATER OF WORLDS😈🤬🔪
Mike: *lol* no your not😐
IT: 👁️👄👁️
Mike: your just a clown💀😂
IT: 😢
Mike was one of the most loveable of the Losers he was so innocent as a child, but the world was so bad to him.
He loved his family and working.
It's a shame the films didn't have time to capture his character.
He was definitely an innocent kid. I remember there was an anecdote where he asked Richie what a whore was, and Richie told him a whore was a woman who got paid for having sex. Then Mike asks him what having sex meant, and Richie could just shake his head and walk away in disbelief.
Do the history of belch
He was such an innocent and pure kid, only knew to be scared of people. He’s so kind and GOD-
Sid Vicious I agree, I love mike, he’s a cute character. I love his character so much better in the book!!!!
Terry Cullen I remember that part!!!
I always felt like mike was more of a leader than bill tbh. He’s the one who stayed behind, he did all of the research, he’s the one who got everybody back together and etc. One of my favorite characters from the book!
Julia correct, bill was just obsessed with kids the whole movie. (exhibit a: that little boy with curly hair)
xxjordanxx baddiexx Right yeah, making sure Pennywise didn’t kill any more kids like Georgie was just him being obsessed right SURE
Totally agree with you he was the most important character
Higher Further faster more bro, I wasn’t trying to start anything. I was just saying...
He was de facto leader when Bill and the others couldn’t remember anything
Mike is a really interesting character but the movie doesn’t think so
Yeah at least they gave him something
MuMu124 At least in the sequel he actually did something
Henry’s a interesting character but nobody else thinks so.
Stryker okay
He was handled much better in the 1990 miniseries.
I always wish they'd put the scene of Mike passing Pennywise twice in the parade in a movie it's legitimately creepy in a way that would translate to film really well
Yeah! The way it’s written in the book is sooo creepily good😁👍
Poor Mike. He didn't get to have his final moments with Eddie like the others and he was prbably the most scarred out of all of them because he retained the memories and was well aware of the killing of children and could do nothing about it.
Mike Hanlon was the historian of the group not Ben .What Bothers me about the movie how they changed his character. If you read the book Mike was one of the important characters of book you wouldn't know that if you when by the movie.
They completely watered down Mikes character
In the novel he’s like a cool detective who had a interest in hearing people and objects stories from a early age. And that developed him as a adult into the Batman of Derry.
yeah and his parents were decent people
Ben was the builder.
Which movie?
Thank you thank you thank you so much for this!!!! As a black person you don’t understand how much it mean to me that a black character with so much importance in this story finally getting his recognition. They did his character such a disservice in the new movie by giving his storyline to Ben that it diminished my enjoyment of the film. I actually almost cried in sorrow when I finished watching it and had to explain to my friends (who are not black) why I was so upset. Once again thank you!!!
Aisha Lee - I feel the same as you do. Mike’s my favorite character in the books. I’m glad they upped his importance in the second movie, but it felt so weird for the one important trait of his was given to Ben in the first movie. It missed the symbolism of both Mike and Ben of their roles in the ritual and the group.
For me, Mike will forever be the one Loser that posed a bigger threat to Pennywise than any of them.
What also felt so upsetting was how much they took away from Mike's confrontations of IT (the pre-historic bird attack moment in the book for example) as well as the fact that they changed the times from the 50s to the 80s.. The book had so many more statements of the height of racism in the 50s, and it was so much more predominant than in the movie. They simplified Mike so much...they muddled him and for no valid reason. It irrevocably broke the movie - and it just took even more away from Black history. I can't imagine how hard that must feel as a Black person. I just hope further movies do more justice.
SERIOUSLY!!! in the book mike gets so much story and focus that just didnt transfer in the movie. its unfair that the sexual abuse from the book is covered in the movies (beverly’s arc) but not racism. i dont think his story should be glossed over. i cant imagine how frustrating this may be for someone who is black (i’m white). it strikes me as disrespectful. in this way, it’s a disservice to the original source material and, evidently, a disappointment for black watchers as the only major black character was watered down, suppressed, and changed to accommodate for a majority white audience.
You all know there was a 1990 miniseries that correctly showed Mike as the historian. they show those scenes in the video. But yes I didn't like the switch either
They’ll get it right on the next remake rest assured
It's worth noting that Mike does continue to stay in Derry after the events of "IT". He has a minor role in "Insomnia", which takes place almost 10 years later, in Derry, where he is still a librarian. He'll likely spend the rest of his days there.
"Insomnia" is an interesting read. Lots of Dark Tower connections.
Honestly the aftermath of the fight is wishy-washy.
@@thewanderinggamer1369 What do you mean?
It's a shame that the first movie left out the fact that Mike has always been the historian
So when I watched the second movie, when Mike started presenting us the lore and history of It, it seemed out of left field.
Thanks for filling me in!
It gets even worse if you never saw the miniseries (I did, my family had IT on video cassete) and/or read the book (something I plan to do).
It's very random and comes off like a patch job after what the writers did in chapter 1. Another reason why, in a multitude of them, that was a bad call for the screenplay.
Sam Eulde Ikr
I hate how the incident with the bird or the death of Eddie Corcoran wasn't shown in the first movie.
That's why this new version should have been a 10-part miniseries instead of 2 movies. They really missed an opportunity to do the novel justice.
Also wish that they had Beverly’s mother in the film, or at least some references to her
Eddie Corcorans death was the most disturbing one to me.
@@dreamlandnightmare Absolutely! I've thought that for years.
Also Eddie Corcoran was black and in the old movie they ignored that…
You kind of downplayed his football career, in which he was a star player who was breaking school records before having to quit due to an injury.
Tim Reid who played the older Mike Hanlon in 1990 came up with the reason Mike stayed. on the commentary track he said someone had to keep that town integrated.
He was joking, but it makes sense, because I don't recall seeing any other black characters in Derry.
In the tommyknockers, another one of steven kings work, one of the characters goes to derry and sees the plaque mike put up, but it had spray paint on it reading *pennywise lives* so.........
I didn't know that ,I'll watch it again,it's been years I haven't watched it .
@@markmolino6091 i believe it might be in the movie but I read it in the book so it might only be in the book. you should check tho
I know this is late, but the book was Dreamcatcher, not Tommyknockers. I don't know if that made it in the movie, though. I've never watched the whole movie.
@@GoodMoviesForLater It's not in the movie, which is a pretty good adaptation until you get to the ending, which is as bad as the rest is good.
I'm glad Mike got a bigger role in Chapter 2
Slightly bigger. He was still under used imo
@@onyx081 True
There is a deleted scene that would placed more importance on his character
F!2020 the one in the trailer
Well he basically was the leader he led them to defeat penny wise
I'm surprised no one's mentioned that one of the people that Mike's dad served with and helped open The Black Spot, was the cook from The Shining. Dick Halloran was the cook for the Overlook and also was the cook at the Black Spot. Pretty sure he worked in the mess hall in the military also.
I’ve honestly been patiently waiting for the history of Mike
Did no one notice that his tie is the same pattern as the floor from the shining and the pattern on the kids skateboard in IT CHAPTER TWO
George Dajavs 😣
I'll do you one better, How *did* you notice that?
@@bellakneer3539 im too smart
@@georgedajavs7608 ah another of my kind I see
For 2 reasons, Mike was always my MVP. 1) he understood the history and malign nature of It and Derry. 2) He stayed and back in Derry to watch for It’s return. Plus either by circumstance or fate the other Losers were able to do something more than become the town Librarian.
I really do appreciate the new It films but I have disdain with Mike’s role and story was presented in the film. Chapter 1 filmmakers reduced Mike’s historian- thinker role in the Loser Club and his connection to Derry’s malign nature. Chapter 2 Mike didn’t have his calm thinking nature and seemed too desperate and erratic at times.
Mike: side character in the first movie.
Mike: side character in the second movie.
Mike: The main hero and somewhat most likable character in the movie. Also the anchor of the entire movie by starting the reunion of the losers club.

One of my favorite parts of the book was Mike Hanlon interviewing people and researching the history of Derry. Cool stuff. The smoke visions in the clubhouse too😁👍
Agreed it really made you feel for him going up against the cops trying to sweep all the murders and disappearances under the rug and dealing with the traumatized people that Pennywise has hurt in his wake. And worst of all how Mike is being drove insane and Pennywise holding this immense feeling of dread and power over Mike continuously tormenting and mocking Mike. Literally stalking him like a predatory carnivorous animal stalks its prey.

Man, I love your character breakdowns! I've read the book IT many times and have seen all movies (most more than once), yet you still put new perspective to me...f'ing great job man!!
It's really interesting: I watched the first mini-series as a teenager and thought the new movies was super different when really I just forgot a ton about the first one.
Love the Shining tie, bro!
It annoys me to no end that the 90s miniseries includes everyone’s initial encounter with IT, except for Mike’s.

Before I watch and heard what you said I'll answer.
Mike said quote in book he stayed back to make sure it was dead.
He was 100% plus his family never moved so he had reason to stay after 2 summers and everyone else left with Ben/Eddie bring last to leave
Damn I had the book and just lost it on chapter 14 and I had to move
the thing that annoyed me about mike is that he didnt discuss it with his dad a person questioning a simular experience his dad woudlve probably tried to help especially when he sees IT because when mikes dad saw the giant bird it had red balloons attached just like IT was holding the same red balloons seen on the bird
Oh, this was such a good episode. Probably my favorite so far!
As a fellow librarian, Mike is definitely a favorite character in the IT narrative for me. Historian (both for the town they work in and for a myriad of other topics), and local events calendar keeper, are two of the many hats librarians must juggle to keep their libraries running, thereby ensuring the spread of information. "What we do in the present will be read about as the history of tomorrow." is an adage that we keep in mind when preserving texts, objects of interest, digital media, etc.
As the only one who stayed in Derry, closest to the source of pure evil, Mike's post battle success may not be as widely known as the rest of the Losers Club. But becoming a librarian takes a certain kind of devotion to taking in, and preservation of, information, covering as wide a range of genres and potential audiences as possible. I spent three and a half years of graduate school for my dual Masters for my grad school program, which is prerequisite to getting even basic library jobs if you don't do page work as a teenager. Short version: don't diss Mike Hanlon, the boy who knows the value of physical labor and understanding the contents of a repository of Derry's worst disasters.
Yay! I was hoping you would continue making these!!!!!!!
I was super excited about this one! He is my favorite member of the loser club. Thanks!!!!
Always looking forward to these videos :)
Everything makes way more sense watching these. The old 90s version had a lot of gaps to the actions they did
I love all of your IT history videos, so informative and entertaining! Can't wait for Ben and Beverly :D
There is another Stephen King story called "Insomnia" which takes place 8 years after the events of IT. In that, it's revealed that Mike is still a librarian at the library. So he never left Derry.
I'm so happy I found this channel. Awesome stuff. My name is Mike, I also have a strange fear of birds. My family also comes from Derry... (Ireland). Its like my life story!
Could you please do a video on the relationship of Eddie and Richie? Perhaps after most have seen the movie.
ABOUT TIME!!!! THANK YOU!!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!
I absolutely love the plaque, anyone else!? I thought it was so meaningful and deserved a lot more recognition in the new movies. The plaque just kinda ties everything to an end and I think it was a perfect addition
What saddens me is that the plaque is the only thing the losers have that stays. They lose their memories of each other and reading Mike's last lines in the story when he says he loved all his friends while all his memories of his friends were being erased from his mind was really sad to me. They loved each other so much but their bond is forgotten.
I think Mike is probably my favorite character from the Loser's Club. Everyone battled their own demons; especially Beverly...my goodness...but I also feel for Mike. Loved the character growth as well. Makes me want to rewatch the series.
