    Great chat. Peter de Sève is a good example of an Illustrator that crossed over to "soft" design. He does items like New Yorker covers, but also character design for the Ice Age movies. Thanks for your videos. They've really smoothed my switch to digital from traditional mediums.

    About DPI. Unless you are printing, it doesn't make a difference in digital production. A DPI of 1 or 1000 will not alter your image one bit. The important factor is with the PPI. Like BartzConcept said, anything between 3000-5000 is a good starting point. I usually end up in the 10,000 range (wide). DPI always at 1. If you do need to print, that res is good enough as well. DPI is pretty useless these days...for what we do.

  • @Alkaliho
    @Alkaliho 13 років тому

    @pbryant23 The DPI setting only applies when you set your canvas size to inches or centimeters. A higher DPI then puts more pixel in each aquare inch or centimeter. This setting is ignored if you use pixels as the size.

    The best way to keep jobs coming is by building up great working relationships with huge clients such as Microsoft, EA, Activision, etc. Once these studios like you, they'll stick with you for years (why risk hiring new people when they found a dependable one right?). Meeting deadlines and giving clients cool ideas is the best way to build that relationship.
    There are downtimes as well - usually before E3. I love downtimes, gives me the chance to travel and relax.

    Thank you so much for that comment about not doing traditional.
    I don`t think there`s anything wrong with people who want to do digital, but I get a bit annoyed at all the talk about you not being a "real" artist if you don`t do traditional, as fi there`s something magical about medium that makes it of a higher value than digital media.

    you can't see DPI anywhere if you want to make a new file? if you set it on 1 or 1000 it's just the same but the size of your file usually depends on it alot. So if you don't really need to print your work, you really don't have to worry about the dpi settings and can even use 1 there.. some people set it on 72 or 300 even but 1 is already good enough apparently xD

  • @BartzConcept
    @BartzConcept 13 років тому +1

    Guys dpi isnt the same as ppi (pixels per inch) like he says if you got a 3000-5000 pixel wide image and use a reasonable PPI(!) your image will look decent printed. Dpi doesnt do anything....

    @Fengdesigns I'm not having a go or anything, I was just being inquisitive. I study Games Art at University in the UK, where we learn everything from 2D concepting to 3D modelling, animating and Sculpting in programs like Maya, Zbrush and Mudbox. That works out around £10,000 for 3 years. I was just curious as to why this particular course is expensive, in such a competitive market with fewer and fewer jobs available. I think your concepts are fantastic and I appreciate all the vids by the way.

  • @XBLGR
    @XBLGR 10 років тому

    you know, i was looking at your course and I saw the price and thought "woah screw that" but after a while i realised something....can you imagine how much it would boost your chances of landing a job knowing you studied under a guy who worked on star wars, is a professional concept artist and has his own school and that's only scratching the surface of what he has accomplished. also the techniques and education you'd pick up will stick with you for life, its something to consider.

      Also, a standard 4 year Art education (at least in Canada) is something like 40k here and they don't necessarily focus students heavily on fundamentals either (some might).
      You get the work that you put into though so even Feng's school is not a magic bullet

    • @XBLGR
      @XBLGR 10 років тому

      GenkiKai true, with most things its a case of you get what you put in i suppose.
      seriously 40k in canada? I live in the UK and It only cost me £300 to do 3 courses...wtf?!?!

  • @2ndarc

    Hey Feng, art has always been a getwaway for me, forget about stress etc and just draw whatever, if I go into the industrial design industry, will i lose" that feeling " in a way. The worst thing for me would be looking at a blank slate and feeling sick.. I don't want that to happen. I'm starting architecture next year at uni but i've heard that it can suck the creativity out of you :O how do you keep yourself motivated?

    I love the answer to the PC vs. Mac question: "If you're going for image, get a Mac"
    Why don't people realize this? Macs aren't expensive because they're "better", they're expensive because they're Macs. It's a preference thing, not a performance thing.

    Hello Mr Feng,
    You said a the end of this video "Don't worry about speed" but to grow faster we need to draw a lot of things and put more time as we can on this. For truly beginner like me, don't you think we need to force ourselves to keep a maximum time for drawing like if i have 4 hours a day to draw i choose animals for a day and give me 1 hour ou 30 min to draw with maximum details or focus to one subject and do it more precise i can and improve day after day? What do you think about this?

    Here's a question. Can you make a comfortable living with this, meaning is the industry as polar as either being in the top crew, making half a mil a year for the mega companies, or that you're collecting cans for recycling to supplement your income in order to feed yourself.. is there a middle road? I would love to do this stuff for a steady 30k/year without becoming a "big name" with all that crap that comes with it.

    I have been curious about this for a very long time, and I don't recall you ever clarifying the answer to it (maybe it's in a video of yours I haven't seen yet). I am confused about what happens when you make the image grayscale to check the values.
    It looks like you add a new layer with black and set it to saturation, but then you paint on it in the black and white stage, and somehow the changes you painted translate back to the colored version of the painting. How does this happen?
    Thanks

    Hey Feng when you get the time could you clarify your answer to the "what dpi do you work at?" Your answer was "1 dpi" and my response was WHAT?! When creating a new image the dialog box asks for width,height, and resolution. Everything I do is done at 300 dpi and when I save out to post on my site I reduce the resolution to a 72 dpi jpeg. Forgive my ignorance but, how can you do anything at 1 dpi? Thanks for all the great videos btw.

    Hello Feng Zhu, you mentioned people are good at one or a couple things. characters, environments, vehicles, etc. i recently started art school, and i wanted to be good at characters and enrivonments (buildings, landscapes etc), designing in 3d and digital paintings to get my ideas across as well as 3d modeling for games. would it be wise to focus on one thing only since i am a beginner, and then move on? or would practicing characters and environments at the same time be beneficial?

    @m1k3911 I'd fix yourself a Wacom tablet and Photoshop in the first place. Photoshop really helps you experiment with color and values. As Feng Zu says, try to draw things from real life. Always drawing things from your mind will block your creativity at some point. To do this you just need pictures from google and you try to redraw those pictures from scratch :)

    Hi Feng. I'm stuck in a bit of a rut. I am 17 and hoping to become a concept artist. I have always wondered where I should be in terms of my visual understanding of things like anatomy, lighting, color composition, etc. at my age. I plan on getting official education in game art/concept art as soon as I'm out of high school. I just don't know where I'm at compared to others my age.How much should I know before getting professional training?

    • @zlovredniyTip
      @zlovredniyTip 8 років тому +1

      hopefully I am not late for a response. I am not an artist but for the last year or 2 I really got into art. My research towards art schools shows that it is often not very helpful, especially if you are the person who needs to be pushed to do something. Art is a difficult skills and requires mileage. If you want to be that guy from your imagination then you need to practice. The more is better. Feng talks about it in another video (independent learning or something along those lines). I have a friend who is learning in a local uni on faculty of arts (its pretty well respected in Canada but not the best). According to him not everything what they learn is really helpful in the field (thats why it would be a great idea to check out reviews of programs before going into it).
      Another problem is finances. If you are ok with spending quite a bit of money then its ok, just try to avoid loans. Just imagine having a 90k loan and have a 30k annual income. It might not happen to you (I sincerely hope that it will not happen to anyone), but having to pay a large chunk of your income each month to cover the loan can be very difficult. Before committing to a program try to understand if it is worth the money or not.
      Skills:
      If you can learn fundamentals by yourself learn as much as you can, then you will be able to build on your current skill set once you are in school. Knowing too much never hurt anyone (unless you are me in grade 3 when I used multiplication instead of addition and made my teacher mad as we were not supposed to know that stuff yet).
      Hope this helps.

    @LEDCircus If you can give me a few million dollars every year to cover the rent, utilities, staff salaries, equipment upgrades, then we'll lower the tuition to only 10$.
    All jokes aside, it takes a lot of money to run a private school. Industries such as ours don't have 1000+ students every term. Even big schools such as Art Center (where I studied) only have 20 or so students per term - and their tuition is something like $20,000 a single term! We all have bills to pay.
