  • In this Star Wars special episode of Design Cinema, we share our approach for adopting design languages to existing IPs.
We use the 1977 Star Wars and the 1998 Japanese anime series, Cowboy Bebop, as product examples. We raise the questions: “What if you were hired to design for these projects? What would you do?”
Follow along as we break down the design processes and explain the importance of each step.

I've been going to art school for about 5 years now, and it has done very little to help my drawing. I've always wanted to become better at realism and conveying my ideas trough drawings, but art school has knocked the wish to draw right out of me. We dont't have concept art schools where I'm from, so I went to study painting. We did figure drawing right from the start and by the end of our 2nd year, you were told that you were now an expert and cold do essentially anything. Most students chose to go abstract before learning the basics of realism. I did some skeleton, animal and figre studies and was ridiculed for it, so I switched to doing some meaningless abstract paintings for my bachelor thesis. Later I changed from painting to illustration, where the climate was slightly better and more supportive, but they still wanted 'expression'. Only now that I'm done with my studies am I really starting to learn. I watch a lot of lectures online, draw from photo reference every day & am slowly figuring out realistic painting. I'm already 25 and I see a lot of younger artists with superior skills, which makes me angry at myself for all the time I've wasted. Well, no good dwelling on the past, I'll just have to work hard and make up for lost years. :) What I wanted to say is thank you for sharing your knowledge, and just so you know - you're a better teacher than all of the staff of my academy combined. May the force be with you.

Ever heard of the Watts Atelier? It's one of the best schools in the US, if not the world. I'm not even kidding. I'm not a student because I'm not fond of the kind of art they focus on (with the exception of concept art. Yeah they teach that there) and I'm also not a marketer or whatever for them. It's a school in San Diego, California I think but there's also an online program that's really good that mimics the on-site teaching available in the Watts classroom. If the kind of art you'd like to focus on is Portraiture, Figurative (Nude and clothed), Still Life, landscape, storyboarding, Illustration (for book covers and magic the gathering cards and other jobs) and concept art then that place I hear is incredible. Some artists like Wojtek Fus was a student there and worked on the recent Star Wars movies. I personally don't know how their training works, specifically how a fine art school can also teach concept design for films/ games, but they've found a way that's either hidden/gatekept on purpose or just really difficult to find in the fine art/illustration/ concept art trades. I suggest you start with the video " how to train to become a successful working artist." I think training doesn't mean they're trying to root you out of your expressive abilities but refine it so that it can be communicated and refined. Good luck on your art path and I hope your artistic spirit conquers the hardship of life. Easier said than done, I know :)

Been watching for ~8-10 years, and really loving these new episodes, very on-point and fresh since around Episode 94. I used your sketching w photos (episode 99) technique in a CGMA Environment Design class w Aaron Limonick and he found it really cool & hadn't seen it before.
I'm planning to apply for FZD School in early February for the June 2020 intake!

I found Design Cinema around Christmas time my freshman year of college, and now I'm a senior! First I want to thank you for inspiring me to start drawing and painting again, since I always liked art but I hadn't done much art in high school, and never touched a tablet before. I had the mindset that cool art was just something that other people did. But 3 years later I'm much happier with my work, both digital and traditional! I really enjoy Design Cinema since you explain the reasons why fundamentals are important, which is why 3 years later these types of videos explaining "basics" are still helpful. I would definitely like to see more of these! Thanks again and happy holidays :)

I'm no designer and I don't draw much anymore, but I always follow your design cinema. To me the last few videos have been very inspiring because I can see the potential behind it that go well beyond just drawing and concept art. The "design reduction" to keyword for example could easily be used for character creation in written media, defining what the character would act like or present itself to others. Although I dabble in digital art, having never been schooled in arts, these videos are incredibly mind opening. Here's to a 2020 filled with Design Cinema :D

I like this talk about researching what influenced an old IP. The recent Resident Evil remakes are choosing redesigns that belong in the late 2010s, but the game still uses 90s computers and other details appropriate for the years the stories took place. It's a design mashup with no thought behind it

Always nice to spend one hour or more listening to you!
For your Starwar design, l came out with two solutions:
    1) The ship lock his engine into a Cruiser ship slot, So the gun stay out able to shoot.
    2) The canon rotate 90° and gears can came out from the large plate.
But i prefer the first idea, because it keep it fonctionnal, this kind of ship dont need to land on planet. And the design dont say that it can fly easily in atmosphere. ;)

i was really confused but at the end with the demo i understood what you wanted to explain, because you chose imo a really subtle difference, those two IP are really similar, both making a salad with western cowboy, samurai, world war, the ships in cowboy bebop are really sturdy too and with a purpose. But the difference is there, but it is really subtle, i think the video was great but i just would say that they are not a contrast but more like a subtle difference
