  • In this episode, we cover 3 fundamental rules for achieving professional level environmental compositions. First is choosing a good camera position. Second, selecting the correct FOV or lens. Finally, staging the scene with the foreground, mid-ground and background elements.

    I don't mind at all the longer format. If it takes 2-3 hours to explain what you need to explain, then take all the time you need dude. When Design Cinema hits the UA-cam notifications, it always takes the top priority. Best art content definitely on the internet. Thank you!

    I bought several drawing tutorials etc and found that most of them are just drawing demos.. ultimately I will come back to FZD channel to learn fundamentals. I really appreciate that you are taking precious time to share your knowledge (and very useful, detailed knowledge indeed in my view) without any expectation. I only wish I were younger and more talented enough to sign up for your school.. but maybe in another life.. :) For now, I whet my interest in devouring whatever you are putting out on this channel. Thank you very much, Mr Feng Zhu!

      Right!?!?!? I did the same, bought a bunch of gumroad tutorials from famous concept artists and the majority of them only show fancy techniques and not the fundamentals or design core.

    Thank you for sharing free professional knowledge! I spent tens of thousands of dollars for a multimedia degree that did not even teach me 1/4 of what was said here. Wish I had these videos to learn from two decades ago... To the younger generation of artists, listen to what he's preaching here; because it's exactly what you will look back on 10 years from now and realize every word he's saying about the formula is the truth!!!

    Hi Feng. I saw you the first time 14 years ago in Attack of the Show. Your artwork changed my life. I always come back to your lessons and work to keep me grounded because it's so engaging. After 12 years and some random luck, I got a job as an Art teacher abroad. I always tell people about you. As a teacher, I know feedback is important, so I'm just one more person letting you know that your work is greatly appreciated.

    I'm having a hard time seeing your horizon line that high at 1:12:33 . It looks like it would be lower. More at the character's hips. Maybe it's the compression of the lines on the ground, but it just looks like we're looking more up. Or maybe it's my eye, and I need to work on it more.

    • @dyetaa
      @dyetaa 4 роки тому +3

      It is actually lower, you re right, it's pretty easy to see, in the middle ground at the towerish thing on the right, it has some kind of rectangular thin platform, you can see that the bottom lines of that platoformy rectangular thing are actually a straight line and having the top lines converging a bit down so it means they the horizon line is there

    • @hrishi4149
      @hrishi4149 4 роки тому +2

      I kept thinking the same thing, that it should be around the hips or slightly lower even. Was hoping someone else in the comments would bring it up.

    • @autoremix4798
      @autoremix4798 4 роки тому +2

      Same with the top image, right? The horizon should be at the female character's hips (at the environmental horizon). And in both cases the scale feels a little confusing as a result, unless the camera is crouched down looking up slightly

    awesome episode thanks! do these rules still apply when you are doing concept art for a top down game? I'm having a hard time depicting environments from top donw perspective and still have them conveying compositional depth and layering / making them somewhat illustrative / visual appealing. Especially when doing moodpieces for a region.

    I actually used to work in Disney Star Wars land 😅 (galaxy’s edge)
    The horizon line in the image is actually human eye level because the entire falcon sits on a pedestal. I think R2-D2 was just really close to the difference between the viewer’s high and the pedestal!
