Schools are good for discipline.. for people with weak will power... the reality is the internet has all the tools and information you need to learn how to draw. What you need is to find your will power. Get out of comfort zone, think about thinking, learn how to aim at your desire and focus on it, make sure your actions are such that they aim at your desire to become a great artist
Feng, you are probably the most ambitious guy I've ever seen, I do know for sure why you made it this far in this business... never seen a guy who was that honest and straight about the things it takes to be a successful concept artist, that allways motivates me. Thanks for all the helpful videos...
Feng, I have been in the Game industry for about 7 years. I am shocked how much I still learn from simply listening to all your tips and information. Thank you for keeping this going, it is greatly appreciated.
I love your ability to be straight forward and honest, you'd seem like a great mentor/ teacher....Also, I really appreciate how his opinions are really statements that are for the betterment of being nothing less than a designer. I have the utmost respect for you FZ..
I'm an aspiring 3D artist and I just wanted to say I really appreciate you giving your time to making these videos. Lots of great information that is helping a lot of people around the world. Many thanks from England, UK
At this current time I am completing my final year at Plymouth college of art Interactive Media and Game arts and I am continuing on to the BA of Interactive Media and Game Art for three years. I have watched you episode as often as I can to build up my skills.
Thank you for the interest in FZD School of Design. Here is the information about the qualification as stated on our FAQ page: A: Students graduating from our 1 year program will receive a WSQ Diploma Certificate in Industrial Design. All our programs are registered with Council of Private Education (CPE). Nevertheless, do keep in mind that the most important qualification in our industry is your portfolio. Without it, no resumes, diplomas, degrees, etc. would even matter. Thank you!
Feng Zhu you are a hug role model to me and i'm so inspired by you. Thank you so much for all your insight and your amazing contribution to the entertainment industry. I hope to go to your school in two or three years. You can bet that i'll ask for your autograph when i'm there!

I hope feng you put all of this into your description. so that others will have easy time jumping from one question to another.. or will know the contents without having to watch the whole video.
Thank you very much Feng sir. I am 16 years old and I study Game Design. I kinda like it but I hope once I've built up my portfolio a bit, I can apply for a real Art-Academy and go from there on. I have a friend who went to your school, he came back to Holland and I could see how much he learned. I want a school like this soo much. I know risks reward but if I fail I'll have a financial problem for the rest of my life. It is something hard to decide :/ Anyway Sir, you are my inspiration! thanks!
Super excited about the FZD Art book! You and FZD have been such an inspiration, and have worked so hard with your students and fans. Congratulations on your success! I look forward to your next video!

I am going to hear that video again while i am drawing. My biggest wish is to visit your school in the next 2 to 3 years. I think about that most of the time and I never was so passionate about an idea.
totally agree. I ordered my rig piece by piece and I put together almost a year ago. It was much better than any Alienware out back then, and now although it isnt better than the new pc's (it has been a year afterall) it is still top range. I should be able to run everything I want superfast for another year at least. And all this like you said, for a fraction of the price.
Thanks Feng for having the time to put up Q&A senssions for us even with your very busy schedule. Really appreciate it. Forgive me though, I just can't shake off noticing you putting up a bit of weight.
also I dearly, dearly appreciate you of answering those questions.... I am so afraid and I don't own a college degree, I've been literally discouraged enough to give up (everything...).. Every time I get fed up with the world around me saying "You are going to fail, fail FAIL" I come back to your words and teachings. I just wanted to let you know what you mean to someone like me.... Thank you teacher~ (like I have a right to call you teehee)
There's no hot key for it. But if you can set your own for almost any action. Go to Edit -> Keyboard Shortcuts -> then browse to your desired action and assign its hot key.
That statement that you made on procrastination is so true, just today i was doing the same, gaming for hours so I had to tell myself go ahead and get back to studying via these vids and vids like it. Thanks man.
My dream would be to attend your school. I've been struggling to develop my skills over the last decade while juggling work and family responsibilities. I desperately want to get out of the rut and have the time and training to get to a professional level. I just could never afford this school. I'm surprised more people haven't brought that up. I would pay in a heartbeat if I did though. Absolutely seems worth it.
The "Look" Feng has on this video, should be the BIGGEST clue as to what kind of lifestyle the industry requires you to have. Some will say, "oh well, that's just until you get your for in the door. After that it's smooth sailing". Nope! Once you get your first in-house job, that is WHEN the real stress and pressure begin! It's amazing how many kids are avoiding a traditional college career for this "Dream job" without realizing that it is just as challenging as ANY engineering field.
Good Day Feng! First off thank you so much for taking time off of your busy schedule to make these videos for free which is awesome. I've a question: I keep getting told my work is "generic". May I know what does this mean from someone who is experienced? And have you any advice for me to start developing better work? Thanks!
How many videos like this one do you watch a day? Unless you spend all day doing it instead of drawing, it's just studying and will definitely help you get better at your craft. Art requires a lot of practice but when it comes down to it, that practice is necessary to acquire certain knowledge.
The FZD Design Cinema Contest deadline is approaching soon. Be sure to submit your entry by September 30, 2013 to win a trip to Singapore. Good luck to you all~~
This video is the final proof that what i always thought about America, Japan and other socially evoluted country was right. Free workspaces,no raccomandation , no help by "someone you know" to find a job, only experience and ability .Passion and exercise are the only ways to be recognised as a professionist.Amazing how meritocratic is the place and the background where you work. Happy for you and wishing for my future to get a place like your. Here in Italy you can't count only on you skill ):
Its really helpful sir, I've always watched your videos, and updates in Facebook, but never communicated back, blame my laziness for that, Any ways this kind of QnA videos are very helpful for student like us. great work sir, Hope to meet you in person some day.
If you work in-house, game development means working with an entire creative team, not just artists. You need to understand the work of designers, programmers, sound, etc. If you're only paying attention to the art, you lose the connection. The game is designed to have a "feel" as an interactive medium, not like a movie. Especially if you're a UI artist like myself, part of your job is playing games to research usability, conventions, etc. I believe you should always be playing games!
This question is answered I believe in a later video. Basically since you get paid for getting those concepts done it doesn't matter if they are accepted or rejected they will always be owned by the client.
its actually more like $65000 unless you live there, you cant have a job with a student visa, so all the money for rent food and transportation has to be saved beforehand
He not telling Feng to sell his Alienware. He is telling people with a low budget to bulld their own custom computer that is just as powerful as ailenware and cheaper. UA-cam is a good place to find a tutorial on where to buy the parts and how to set it up.
very cool episode feng. you should give away 2 or 3 of your new art of books. you have a pretty huge following im sure you could come up with a cool contest idea.
Hi Feng. I really would like to see some of the next episodes captured from your back to see how exactly you drawing at your setup. Maybe you should alternate the views from your back and fullscreen. I think this would be very interesting and helpfull to know how a proffesional conceptual artist like you working. Sorry for my english hope you understand and thank you for very interesting episodes.
you mentioned before that you should be able to draw/paint everything at the beginning and specialise later. But in my case I have things I`m more comftable with and things I`m not...what im wondering now is if I should focus on things im not so good or which im not comfortable with but getting frustrated fast or drawing what I like to draw until I get good general drawing confidents and practice the other stuff later?
Really good Q&A. I have a question about drawing speed and time limited studies. Is it good to define "In 1 hour i have to make 3 vehicles studies in perspective" for example or just working on quality? Eaht i mean by that is should we have to force the speed? I know the industry is all about very high quality in very short amount of time.
I find it difficult to truly listen and paint at the same time, didn't even think of that though :) Painting definitly burns the braincells, which is probably why i procrastinate it so bad... its a vicious cycle lol
Would you consider webinar style classes through Skype or a similar desktop application/program? There can still be one-on one communication and screen sharing. Also, thank you for posting the tutorial videos! Even without an online class, these are really helpful.
Ugh I wish I could go to FZD more than any other school. I've looked at the website and even all of the students' work is just incredible. I feel like I could improve drastically by going there. But the price tag is way too much for me, and I can't move to an entire different continent just to go to school for a year. Oh well :/

Currently our school does not offer any online courses as practical and in-class assignments are required. We believe that one-on-one communication and guidance is the huge part of succeeding in our program. Please refer to the FAQ page on our website. Thanks!
In regards to your queries, we are not familiar with the GI Bill. It would be great if you could check the terms and conditions with the respective agency. Please be sure to ask if the GI Bill is applicable for international schools. Feel free to email us for further enquiries. Thank you!
FZD School is located in Singapore. For more information on how to apply to the School please visit our website and choose the Admissions - Application Procedures menu. Alternatively, feel free to email us at contact(at)fzdschool(dot)com for further assistance. Thank you!
Thaks a lot for this comment, sometimes i forget the power of the web! Your advice is very important for me.I'm studying Computer Engineering and improving my skill in drawing and learning to use many programs as 3dsmax by myself in order to be in the future a 360° game developer.I hope for the best!Maybe one day we'll be colleagues! ;) Thanks again
I'm pretty sure once the book is released to the public it will be available on a site like Amazon. In which case, if you can buy from Amazon you can own the book lol.
Hey Feng, I have a quesion that i hope you can answer on the next Q&A episode. The question is I have a love and passion for storyboarding and i am currently a freelance artist drawing comic books but i would love to get into doing storyboards for video games, movies and television, so my question is how can i go about doing storyboards for a video game company or studio? thank you for yor time.
Hey Feng i have watched a learned a lot from a lot of your videos but I was just curious if you could make or if you have an episode where you explain what brushes you use. Thanks! -Thad
Feng, work with some people to develop a textbook of art fundamentals in the context of industrial design. Make it a nice, shiny large book that one could put in their living room. Sell it for like 45 bucks. I would buy it in a heartbeat, especially since your art and your students' art is so stunning. You don't call it art. I beg to differ. It's purpose-driven art and it's great. And since the student artwork is stunning, it would likewise be good advertisement for your school.
I've got a question: many studios request experince in the field, something like 3 to 5 years. How can a good artist enter the field without that kind of experience? The problem is: the artist have the skills but no experince, a good portfolio but never actually worked. How does the artist fill that obstacle?
I know you probably get this question a lot, but I am going to ask anyway. I was not born with raw talent. I can hardly draw a stick figure. However, I am truly inspired, motivated, and am wanting to learn the proper way. I have already started reading a book ("Drawing on the right side of the brain"). Question: Is it even possible for me to become a successful artist? And should I take college art courses (starting in august)? Thanks!
How about you give us subject what to paint in your video, then you can do short video where u have chosen some of our paintings and give tips how to make them more professional? That would be very helpful for many of us!
i'd love to see your first portfollio, and early works, at the moment i compare my work to the work i see you produce on here. and of course i feel very inferior by comparison.
Hey Feng great Video ..My What are the things i shuld consider while giving line wieght i mean shuld i look for light source ,the planes that are turning etc ...... thx for takin ur takin ur time :)
Hello I am about to exit high school and want to work in the video game industry. I am thinking of attending the Academy of Art University here in San Francisco, Calisornia in the U.S. and I was wondering if this would actually be a better route to take (and if it is even possible being international). I would deeply appreciate to obtain this information and perhaps an email address to contact you or someone else for further information if necessary. Thank you for your time.
Hi Feng, I have a question. I'm from Ireland and have finished a diploma in 2D and 3d animation, where I've learned a lot of the fundamentals you mention. I am working on growing my digital painting skills and I feel like i'm stuck. I would love to do the course you are providing in FZD school, but I'm not sure how I can make this happen financially. have any of your students made this move and if so how did they finance living and the course over there?
Awesome Q&A Feng, Just on the topic of Degree's - I wanted to add something, I 100% completely agree with you that its not important - *BUT* if you are an artist looking for an inhouse job overseas - for example you want to work in blizzard, or valve, they will need to get a visa for you from the Immigration department ( government ) - and MOST visas require you to have a degree. If you do not have a degree, your chance of working in-house at those places is GREATLY reduced.
Dear Feng, what happened to the shorter courses at your school, where they not as popular as the 1 year course? And if someone where to enroll, what kind of 1 on 1 time would a student get with their instructors?
Feng - I am a huge fan, I know this is an older video but I have a question and it seemed appropriate to post it here. Do you ever take smaller commision work for fans? To cut straight to the chase, I am wanting to get a tattoo of a Koi fish (Original, I know) but I would very much like it to be incorporated as being my favorite artists work as well (Thats where you come in!)
I may be repeating a question posted here already, but since workshops are so expensive, is there any chance of an online course in the near future? Even if it doesn't result in a degree, I think an online 7-10 week course online would really benefit people that can't afford to move to Singapore, or already have a degree but want to learn more.
This video has been quite motivating but at the same time quite depressing. It makes the industry seem like there's a tight circle of people working in it. Almost "crony" in a way, and quite a slave driver.
Hi Feng! How competitive is admission into FZD. I have decided I want to go in about a year and a half and I want to make sure my portfolio is good enough to get in. Please feel free to inbox me. Thanks!
Hi Filip, More information about the book and how to purchase can be found on our website here: w3(.)fzdschool(.)com/gallery_fzd_book_01(.)html. Hope this helps. Thank you!
@bionikslipper In regards to your queries, we are not familiar with the UCAS. It would be great if you could check the terms and conditions with the respective agency. Please be sure to ask if the UCAS is applicable for international schools. Thanks!

I know what you mean. And it so exciting to hear him talk its like 49mins of his time he loves helping us out for free.
"You don't need something super fancy" --goddamn two computers and a fucking TV sized cintique LMFAO
He meant for students.. you definitely need good equipment if you're a professional. :D
Ah I didn't mean the exact same equipment as Feng. Just good equipment. :)
hehe :D
I love your ability to be straight forward and honest, you'd seem like a great mentor/ teacher....Also, I really appreciate how his opinions are really statements that are for the betterment of being nothing less than a designer.

Oh well :/
40:40 I wonder if he's talking about Jan Urschel. He told that story in his podcast.

Thanks! -Thad

Way to tackle that question, Feng. Respect.
Love the poster Feng
Feng, work with some people to develop a textbook of art fundamentals in the context of industrial design.
Make it a nice, shiny large book that one could put in their living room. Sell it for like 45 bucks.
I would buy it in a heartbeat, especially since your art and your students' art is so stunning.
You don't call it art. I beg to differ. It's purpose-driven art and it's great.
And since the student artwork is stunning, it would likewise be good advertisement for your school.
no time now, will watch it tomorrow :)
6:40 My motivation for me is watching you and saying, i could be as good as this guy.
That would be very helpful for many of us!
the answer is a definite. HALF YES. LOL!!!
- can she make it?
- of course not xDDD
I didn't misunderstand it but the annotation made me realize how bad can it be taken
thanks!
i'd love to see your first portfollio, and early works, at the moment i compare my work to the work i see you produce on here. and of course i feel very inferior by comparison.
Build your own computer, alienware is over priced

Hello I am about to exit high school and want to work in the video game industry. I am thinking of attending the Academy of Art University here in San Francisco, Calisornia in the U.S. and I was wondering if this would actually be a better route to take (and if it is even possible being international). I would deeply appreciate to obtain this information and perhaps an email address to contact you or someone else for further information if necessary. Thank you for your time.
Hi Feng,
I have a question.
Hi Feng, thanks for the videos. I have a question for you: do you use pressure sensitive styluses? Thanks. Mike
Thanks!
I hope I join your school at 1 point of my life. :) Since my life is kinda full of being "short on money" due to the economy of my country...
thx feng for the tutoriels
