thank you gentlemen great job!!! so basically its similar to reversing the old twin sideplate VW gearbox in that ya flip the ring an carrier assy .... my favorite part is the adjustment for backlash.... how simple great job SUBARU!!!!
I've been seeing a lot of VW Bus / Subaru engine swaps but I keep forgetting that Subaru engines are in the front, so of course the transaxle's gearing needs to be reversed. Duh! ;-) Btw - On the original Crown conversions you could flip the Corvair transaxle, pivoting around the axles, add an adapter, do a couple easy mods and there you are. Except, you can't use first gear... unless you spend the money for a "hardened" transaxle with additional material, gussets and custom set of gears.
Hang on a minute, so all you're doing (yeah, that easy!) is essentially putting the differential on the other side for reversed drive? Looks much more efficient than any kind of external adapter, and let's you mount engine/gearbox dead center...
Yes correct. BUT, we install a reversed ring and pinion in order to be able to put the differential on the other side. It can't be done with the factory ring and pinion because it is an offset hypoid (above center).
I am using the Subaru engine with the 5 speed manual transmission in a Porsche replica but the engine is centered so the g box is at the rear of the car. I am puzzled about how to connect the shifter. Have you done this before ? Could you give me an idea on how to solve this ?. Thank you in advance.
We don't do mid engined setups. Probably your easiest way it to convert it to cable shift - there are several companies that offer a cable shift conversion for the 5MT.
Hi there, not too sure what I'm watching here. I've seen a forward facing VW aircooled engine on a trike. I'm wanting to know how the gearbox/transaxle would work?? Is this the right place? Cheers.
i've always thought awd beetle would be awesome, but only every developed in wartime for north africa theater. given there is clearance in the main tunnel and front suspension mods, what are the notable roadblocks to full AWD in a type 1?
Would you be willing to share the results from your failure testing of your pinion? Any coolers / pumps available in case this might be used in a track or heavy off-road with big paddle tires? Thx!
What failure testing of our pinion? We have raced the Mexican Baja 1000 3 x times with two cars each time and no failures. This is on 33" tyres which certainly stress the smaller 4.86:1 pinion. They won't last forever but are good for a couple of years of racing and street duties before needing replacement. How big are the big paddle tyres?
@@subarugears Thx for the quick response! I have a manx buggy project that I'm planning along with a possible shop bus in the future. I've built a few cars around transmission choices available and its always a significant chunk of change to get a good box that will handle big power. I've been watching your products for a few years and I'm happy that you guys are stimulating the rear/mid mount trans market with more options...it is still pretty damn expensive using your setup, but if it's durable it's clearly worth the investment. I'll be in contact to discuss clutch, shifter, starter and cv options 👍
subarugears actually I'm not a mechanic and I have a t3 and u know how rare original gearbox is so on my search for flipped gearbox I found this but I can't understand what u really done and what I'm seeking for is how to flip a gearbox rotation any ideas???
Backlash is the amount of forward and backward rocking movement between the ring gear and pinion gear when one of them is held stationary. It's the 'freeplay'. Too little backlash and the gears wear each other out. Too much backlash and the gearset becomes noisy and clunks on engagement and disengagement.

This one upgrade has made me REALLY an old-school air cooled. Great job on creating a non-Porsche 5-speed!!
Good overview if how it's done for someone who is not familiar with a Subaru Trans. I plan on doing one or two with your brilliant conversion kit
Never though I would say this to another guy.. but "nice tool". Beyond clever. Cheers!
This is so good. Thinking with a d15b would be great In a bus
No. the automatic is under eevelopment
subarugears have we come to a conclusion because I'm ready to start an automatic project
Any further development for the automatic? I have a project idea would benefit from this set up but with an automatic with the rear block off plate.
Yep thats a Subarugears cut down housing. We show how to do that in our other video.

Do you sell a ready off the shelf subaru 5spd manual transaxle?
HOW MUCH TO DO THIS TO A FORESTER TRANSMISSION? I'M DOING A VANAGON SUBARU CONVERSION. THANK YOU

Where can i buy than mesure plate !?

Yes, just send us an email, from our website.
just install the center differential as usual.
can you guys make the same with the Subaru automatic transmission? I wanna put the whole combo on my vanagon engine and transmission from Subaru.
hello my friend did you had luck with your project i want to do the same ?
Life In Color , no I haven’t; so far no one has come up with a reverse automatic transmission , up to this day subarugears only have it for a manual .
i've always thought awd beetle would be awesome, but only every developed in wartime for north africa theater. given there is clearance in the main tunnel and front suspension mods, what are the notable roadblocks to full AWD in a type 1?
CSLFiero There aren't any blocks to building an AWD beetle. Just do it, all the parts are there.

But how do you get the AWD hooked up?
You sale the gear box ? The parts of subaru transmisión only i need change to your gear box in my garage? Whats is the trans model?
Yes we do. Please take a minute to read our web site. It answers all your questions.
Do you guys also provide the shims?
+Colin Thorne No, they are available from Subaru.
can I use these parts to .make a reversed all wheel drive gearbox?
Greg Elliott yes you can
amazing job can I do that with Passat b5 gearbox or golf4 gearbox and install it in t3 vanagon?????
Aboubaker Benbaha of course not
subarugears actually I'm not a mechanic and I have a t3 and u know how rare original gearbox is so on my search for flipped gearbox I found this but I can't understand what u really done and what I'm seeking for is how to flip a gearbox rotation any ideas???
Yes...this is a Subaru gearbox. Go to our website and you will understand
No good for off road stuff. They work better as a grenade
Subarugears rear drive conversion kit cost?
Check out their website PRICING page 👍
What do you mean when you say back lash?

Too little backlash and the gears wear each other out. Too much backlash and the gearset becomes noisy and clunks on engagement and disengagement.
those arent scary at all. i wanna build a mid engine buick trike with a 5 speed transaxle. these look nice.
Wait you guys are just doing the 4 speeds ok I'm not so mad now... so these will fit a Chevy 350?
Cliff Wilson We've never done 4 speeds. Subaru transmissions are 5 speed and 6 speed. Yes these fit a Chevy 350 with an adaptor plate and flywheel.
Noticed that after I shot my mouth off ... didn't know my tyranny was so versatile.
Cliff Wilson haha LOL
So you're the kind of guys jacking up the prices on my word tyranny eh?😈 no but really 3rd is out and I'm having a hard time getting it a shop.
How?
Greg Elliott simply fit our reversed ring and pinion into the AWD transmission and flip the front differential.
