Love the work, products, and videos that you guys do. I've put together a 2004 5MT WRX trans onto a 1992 SVX six and installed it midship into a 1977 Lancia Montecarlo/Scorpion. I will definitely order from you as I go through the trans to make sure it's ok. Thanks guys
subarugears crew: This is a great video presentation, but could you please address the questions posted below? Many of them ask for clarification on this build.
Excellent video. I was wondering if the gl-5 oil damage the syncros I now Subaru recommend gl-5 on the transmission and other brand use gl-4 on manual transmission because the synchros are soft metal
Very interesting. I assume you reverse the gears to suite a rear engined configuration, but could this be easily left "as-is" for a mid-engined application as well? What about using a FWD TM752 transaxle as a starting point instead?
@subarugear how much power will these hold up to? Looking at building a JDM EJ25 to make 700ish Hp in a mid engine sand rail. If I can use a Subaru transaxle it’ll help keep cost down VS a mendeola
Can you build one that will adapt to a small block Ford? I want to build a rear engine mustang fastback and need a trans axle solution. I have a ZF transaxle in my pantera but those are impossible to find and crazy expensive
Hello Todd, I’m at the final stages of my build ready to close the case. I have a question, at 31:05 on the video you talk about tightening the backlash half a notch on the pinion side, left side of the case. I’m wondering if I have to do the same thing on mine, the video transition as you was explaining the details and could not understand. Thanks for your support! 👍
How did you clean the aluminum case? I have bought one 5MT with the issue on the 5th and the case is too dirty to be happy, so I was wondering how to clean it. Thank a lot
Mate, your kits have come a loooong way from the phase 1 gearbox conversion that I recall watching a video about about a decade or more ago. No welding required! Noice! Those push in stub axles, got me stumped as to why I didn’t think about it as I’ve swapped my phase 2 box to the old stub axle setup with the matching old sundial where the seal is mounted from the inner side of the sundial. I’m yet to have the groove for the retainer clip machined into the stub axle, but it’s happening. Many of the things you do for the VW world with these gearboxes could easily be transferred to EJ conversions that want the AWD box with it too - those stub axles being one item I can see being used if you can adapt the smaller 23 spline stub axle to this item. Do you use the old style stub axle as the donor for the spline or have your own made and pressed on? Many awesome bits to this kit and it’s great to see how it’s evolved over time with the newer gearboxes. Keep up the good work! If Dave drops in, tell him Bennie says g’day 😉
hello! so i have been trying to find all of the items i need to rebuild my 5 speed. and i CAN NOT find anything aside one bearing. is there any way i could possibly pay you guys or know of any one i could to just source my parts?? im at a loss. my tranny howls on decel only in gear. thanks for the videos. been loving them.
Hey Todd, do you make the stub axles the same size and measurements as a 091 bus transmission, reason why I'm asking is because I have custom axles that I would like to use since I have a old chassis and it's NOT IRS suspension and so custom axles have been made.. the only thing stopping me from getting your reverse transmission is that I do not want to to go IRS because I really like the setup I already have.. but if you supply stub axles that are that of the 091 with the same width measurements I would greatly appreciate it!!
I recently replaced the input shaft on my 08 wrx with another complete shaft from a 2014. My first gear stripped. I kept my output shaft as is. It had no damage and I wanted to keep the same shims so it fit the pinion gear. Day one everything was fine. Next day I have a deceleration whine coasting in first gear. The slightest touch of the pedal and it goes away. Any idea what gremlins snuck in overnight to cause the whine? has about 200 miles on it now. I used 80w-90 but should be fine for now in the 90 weather we've been having.
I believe the cost of the ring & pinion plus other bits needed to convert the trans is around $2k USD. However, for some unknown reason, they aren't able to ship to Russia right now.

I just am still trying to wrap my head around why anybody would want to make their subaru a rear wheel drive???! that is just plain crazy. you have the best all wheel drive consumer vehicle in the world and you want to disable it so it only uses the rears..... it doesnt make any sense.
Nobody wants to make their Subaru rear wheel drive. These reversed Subaru gearboxes are installed into the back of VW's that have their engines and gearboxes in the rear of the car. Installing a modern Subaru engine and reversed transaxle in the rear of a vw gives it a modern driveline.
It makes great sense to replace your 80 hp VW engine and 4 spd transmission with a 165 hp and 5 spd Subaru drivetrain in your VW camper. Better performance and improved gas mileage!
Outstanding workmanship. I wish I knew of a shop like this near me.

Would really like to see full build of 6 speed splitcase subaru transaxle
Why? It's exactly the same except the shifter.
I’d like to see a 6MT all wheel drive as well, not the 5MT conversion to 2WD

Excellent tutorial!
Really (really) GR8T description and tutorial. Hollywood is holding on line 3. p.s. Who needs a girlfriend with such xlint gear-head video content? :)

I need to change my main shaft rear plate. Do i need to take the rear housing off the trans in order to take the center differential housing off?

I doubt you would want a subaru 5 speed behind that v8. Even with upgraded gears, the cases are known to flex under power and cause internal damage.
Voila back in it goes! Bam!
This is so cool, do you make mounting kits for swing axle beetle pan?

da de trocar a caixa da Subaru 4 marchas por uma de 5 marcha automática
How much does it weight after the conversion
?
How does the shifting work? It's the gate just the opposite of what the Subaru would be?

Do you guys make a subanose for 6 speeds?
0:48 What is your method of degreasing? It seems to have done an excellent job.
Step 1: buy degreaser
Step 2: finish

So when this is installed in the rear engine configuration, how does the gear pattern change?
It doesn't. It's the same as the VW H pattern.
Was this a conversion from an R160 to and R180?
Can you recommend someone in the states that knows how to rebuild the 5speed manual, mines out of a 97 Impreza outback.

Subarugears can supply stub axles and drive flanges that allow you to bolt a stock 091 CV joint onto it.
By 5 min the reverse lockout Ball bearing has vanished.
Very nice 👍

South Australia going by the accent...
these dont hold up. built 091 is stronger
Very poor video. I don't know South Australia language. Shorts and cuts each procedure.
