  • In this episode Dan and I take a listen to the new-for-2019 Echo Fix EF-X2.
It’s a modern take on Roland’s seminal RE-201 Space Echo, that uses real tape for the echo/delay effects. We also include some common modern delay pedals, both tape simulation and analog delays, to get an idea of how things compare. What do we think?

It shouldn't shock ANYONE how much fidelity a tape delay can have, as, for years, the music we grew up loving was recorded, mixed and mastered on tape. If the fundamental characteristics of tape were wow, flutter and loss of frequency response, all our favourite songs up until the 90's would sound like they were being run through a flanger, vibrato, and an old Supro tube amp!

Shane at Echo Fix is a top bloke. He is the only source I have found for Roland parts and tapes that actually work. He really helped me out with parts and advice when I was fixing a couple of Roland Space Echo's for a client. Great to see that now he even has his own tape delay unit.

Great show, as always! Nothing beats the magic of real tape for me. 5 years ago I bought a 70s tape machine: Vorg (by Pearl) Echo Orbit 1. I have been gigging with it every week since then. Never had any issue. The maintenance is minimal: every year I cut a new made-to-measure tape, clean the heads and put a new drive belt in the engine. No digital emulation ever brought the same smile to my face as this thing. It is not only the EQ or the modulation that make the difference. It’s an indefinable physical experience.

One of the great features of the Strymon Volante is the “tape wear” knob. All the way to the left you get the full fidelity of the tape, and the more you turn to the right the less fidelity and darker the repeats become. Then you can add modulation with the “mechanics” knob. Its doesn’t have the exact character of a good analog delay, but it gets that sound pretty darn well.

I love what you guys do, and I adore delay/echo myself as well. Over forty years ago, I was given (yes given!!!) a WEM Copicat Custom dated about 1965- '66ish, it is all valve, and has the most amazing sound. It is still working to this day. It is rather fragile, the case is falling apart, but it's hanging in there. I know it is not on the level of your units, but it has a unique sound all of it's own. I have learned a lot from you two about all kinds of effects and set ups over the years. I know you will, but please keep doing what you do, because we really love what you do...

Yet again, some lovely chordage from Dan.A Fab episode. I used a Space Echo extensively in a studio years ago and loved it. Also, as others have commented, that tone with Mick using the Rattler with the D &M drive-oh my word,. Even after a late night gigging this .Inspired me to set up my live rig in the living room and mess around all afternoon-much to the disgust of the cat.. I have a different array of pedals and went off on my own tangent but ended up changing the order of a couple of drive pedals whilst playing with my delay. As you have said before, it is all about being inspired by your gear. Cheers yet again guys.

(VCQ-ish) For all those times someone says, "But this stuff is so expensive! Please feature cheaper stuff!" (Came up on the visit to Jam Pedals video lately...). I just watched Josh Scott's "$50 Pedals That Don't Suck" and he got a complaint in the comments to the effect of, "Not everyone wants cheap stuff - could you please feature some more aspirational gear." (I paraphrase.) To which someone replied: "There's a channel for that: it's called That Pedal Show." So there you go: there's just no pleasing everyone, all the time. One would be a fool to try. So, thanks again for what YOU do! 👍

Just wanted to mention how great the core tone was for this episode. I can't think of a more quintessentially Dan & Mick amp combo than the Two Rock and Dan's new Matchless. It's like a "boutique upgrade" version of the Super Reverb and AC30 setup you guys used to use all the time back in the old Pedal Shed.
Bonus: Let me make my regular plea for more Hiwatt. 😁

I had lost track of time and didn't realize until I saw this on front page that it's friday! People might be tired with the old delay units at this point... But whenever I see words like Echoplex, Echorec or similar mentioned, I can't keep my pants on. That's how excited I get before even seeing the episode. To think I used to only have reverb from amp and now I have Carbon Copy always on and get excited by just seeing the word echo.

I remember the 1980s and how much better the Space Echos (My favorite) and the Echoplexes sounded versus my Boss DM-2. Yes there is magic in the tape, but I am very happy with my standard version Belle Epoch. It gets me 90% there, and it always works.

Dan, you’re so at home with a delay.
Seeing you play, eyes closed and enjoying the sound is magical. Keep it up mate.
On another note, I’m aware there is no better or right/wrong. But I have to say my El Capistran is inspiring to play. It turns my guitar noise into guitar music (well... to me at least). And I’ll admit I haven’t played the Belle Epoch nor an actual tape echo.

Finally a old school That Pedal Show in the room with gear and no guest appearances. :)
I like what you said about expectation of Tap Echo. I recently got a Giga Delay from Boss, which has a Space Echo (No Reverb) emulation. I was super disappointed because it sounded so clean. I was fully wanting the aged tape effect from the emulation. I had to come to terms with that fact that a "perfect" emulation of tape delay from a Space Echo would be "perfect" with new tape and without the sounds caused by poor maintenance. I also realized that the digital delay sound is actually what they were going for when Tape delay was designed. Perfect repeats. It just wasn't possible at the time and we came to love the "imperfect" sound. Seems to happen a lot with musicians and gear.
Fortunately that pedal has a modulated delay, which accomplishes closer to the same thing, so I was still happy. That's a fantastic delay btw. I'm surprised it's never made it onto the show.
Also, would people stop complaining about how the Carbon Copy is dark? That's it's sound, and it's a great sound. If this had been made in the 80's by some company in Japan, people would be drooling over it.

I had the chance to use an Echo Fix in a studio here in Aus a few months back and it was the first time I ‘got’ tape delays. I’d always just assumed it was like an analog delay, but the interactivity between myself, the amp, the guitar and the whole circuit made it feel like the tape delay was it’s own instrument. Maybe it’s just my brain tricking me because these units are physically big, but I’m finding the more I get the chance to use old school style gear like these and Leslies and all the rest of it, how the irreplaceable imperfections and chaos of them inspires the playing!

Cheers chaps lovely sounding stuff all round. There does seem to be more going on with the RE-201, but then apart from the tape the preamp, compander, reverb circuitry and output are all electronics 'of a certain age' doing their thing which adds up I guess, that red light seemed to be on quite a bit as well. Nice reminder of how good the carbon copy sounds with some bright/mid heavy drive too. Hit that long blue note......and let it float. :)

After watching TPS and chatting to Mick I brought the Belle Epoch Deluxe and it is good, but man does it dampen down the high end sparkle.
The merch is all good, but TPS pedals seem to get snapped up pretty quick! Let's have a TPS Fuzz (TFP)!!!

The EF-X2 is now (2020) built with a true spring reverb so it's similar to the RE501. It also has a digital chorus which you can blend with the reverb.

I was watching the video with headphones no and my other half walks past at 46:52 and goes “oh, cocky’s happy about something”. As an Aussie I’m sure you appreciate that one, Dan - I bloody cracked up! Cool episode, I love me some El Capistan.

Dan and Mick… Another great show! Love spending my Saturday mornings with you guys. Sign me up for the “Twidge Authentic” T-Shirt and coffee mug! Future vlog subject for Dan is just locking him in a room with tape delays and recording his guitar face when he’s in the zone… Priceless!

Hey guys, love your show and I appreciate the time, experience and knowledge which goes into each episode.
I would love to hear you have the Roland RE-201 up against a Roland RE-301 which distinguished itself by adding two new features.
The first was a lush, analog chorus effect that was able to be used concurrently or independently from the delay effect to give a pseudo-stereo output option A and B where:
    A=Direct+Reverb+Chorus
    B=Echo+Chorus+Sound On Sound.
Running the RE-301 with 2 amps is something you need to hear.
Additionally, the RE-301 added a new “Sound on Sound” mode, allowing users to loop phrases and then record additional layers on top. This radical concept at the time contributed to the development of “looping”, a phenomenon that would become huge years later

But the RE-201 looks soo much sexier! (I got one too, with a DC-50 sitting on top) I met Mick, Dan and Rabea along with that Yoshi guy, randomly at a guitar store in Tokyo (Ishibashi, Ochanomizu) last year! It just so happened to be Dan's birthday but I didn't know at that time. (Happy belated b-day Dan.) I used to be more of a Mick fan, but after meeting them Dan was just such a down to earth effects nerd that I'm more of a fan of him now (super genuine nice guy, actually Rabea too, Mick was being like a crazy kid running around the store picking up a metal zone and saying "this is what you've been looking for"). They were looking for a Boss DSD2, which they eventually found at a Hard Off Shop (Crazy name, but the online store is called Hard On...line). Anyways I hope I meet them again someday. (I was surprised to be soo starstruck meeting them. I asked the Japanese people working at the store if they knew them. They said "of course" I couldn't tell cos they weren't freaking out like me.)

This was like a flashback episode to the original shows just with better audio and video. It was nice to get back to the roots for an episode. The 201 sure does have its own mojo and I'd have to say I'm with Dan, I'd use one live if I could and take the risk, it's worth it. Don't get me wrong I'd have a suitable back up but if it's there to be used, I say use it.

Humiliating (for me) compliment for you guys... been playing for 30+ years but because I was never a delay user (except in post... recording), I truly never grasped the differences in types until this video... it was like Simon's explaining harmonics. So, please, never refrain from the simple things. I consider myself fairly adept at these things, but because this was a specific area not in my orbit, I was in need of this video because I wanted to get better at this. Most info out there is either childish or you need a degree in aerospace engineering to grasp. I wish the know-it-alls could remember when they didn't know-it-all and appreciate that some of us like learning. Inspiring playing too... thanks gents.

I really enjoyed this episode as I feel I much better understand the fundamental characteristics and differences between tape/analog/digital delay now. Mick - it looked like you were really in the zone in the intro, particularly when Dan dialled in the dub echo. It was nice to see you lost in the sound rather than going through the motions with the familiar licks (of which we all do of course). Plus I agree with Dan, you do have impeccable timing. You're sometimes too humble regarding your playing too! Cheers TPS for yet another great, informed, and educational episode!

Thanks Davey. I wish I could put into words how different it is actually playing music than chumming on, on UA-cam. I’m actually a half decent guitar player when I’m not sat on that stool trying to explain shit to people. My brain can’t make music and be on UA-cam. They’re fundamentally opposed. But thank you!

If you don’t want to use an expression pedal for the belle epoch deluxe but still want to always run through the preamp, you can. Flip the switch inside the pedal for trails mode. The pedal is no longer true bypass and instead cuts the signal off at the record head. So you get spill over, no new repeats, and your dry signal still runs through the preamp.

Incredible sounds as always. Tape is certainly amazing in a studio, but for me the combination of my Flashback 2 for digital and Strymon volante for tape and drum echo sounds , makes it way more practical to cart around to play with.
There can never be enough episodes on Delay!

Yet again another great show guys! Coming back to playing after many years off, i have learned more watching your channel than i ever thought possible. I have a question that doesn't relate to this episode though. You all have talked about how different amps and guitars and pedals interact, but what about the speaker cabs. i know amp makers really try to pair amps with speakers and sounds, etc. And i know it will be unique to each set up. But in general, how would a celestion green back (ceramic) effect the sound of a tube screamer into your plexi compared to an alnico blue? what about a higher wattage creamback? Or celestion vs jensen? Matched or mixed cabs? Thanks guys and party on Dan, party on Mick!
