- Ambrose Akinmusire plays together with the WDR BIG BAND the title "This Little Light of Mine" (composer: Harry Dixon Loes). The arrangement is by Orrin Evans, who also leads the WDR BIG BAND. Solos are played by Ruud Breuls (trumpet), Johan Hörlén (alto saxophone), Orrin Evans (piano) and Ambrose Akinmusire on trumpet. Recorded in October 2016 at WDR Studio 4 / Cologne.

This is what I'm talkin' 'bout!! Fantastic playing all around. Ambrose sounding fatter than a flugelhorn, and beautiful! The arrangement is exciting and interesting. Not at all cliched. And with this tune, coming up with something new definitely showcases superb skills by Orrin Evans. Glad you shared this!!

What a band! What a beautiful use of dynamics in tandem. Special congrats to Messers. Evans and Akinmusire. It is always a bonus to hear the WDR, even at 5 in the morning after a sleepless evening!

Ambrose= world's darkest trumpet sound and not on heavy equipment. There's your proof that's it's all in the approach and mental conception.
I agree with you for the most part, but he does play a medium bore committee and a Monette B2, which is one of the darkest sounding horn+mouthpiece combos out there, and one that has a feel, especially in how it slots, which I think has influenced his approach. He'd sound like himself on any horn, but his equipment does play a significant role in his sound and approach.

A brilliant version which is the perfect combination of the virtuoso composer, arranger and performer, Orrin Evans, the incomparable WDR big band and the outstanding Ambrose Akiinmusire. Hopefully they will record an album one day

Would have been nice to hear Ambrose more off the top in the arrangement. Beautiful sounds, just seems a little pointless having him sit there for five and a half minutes.
