- An incredible line-up of jazz stars pays tribute to Dave Brubeck, playing some of his most famous compositions. Performers include Bill Charlap, Christian McBride, Jazz All-Stars: Jon Faddis and Bill Stewart, Miguel Zenon, The U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors, as well as Brubeck's four sons Chris, Matt, Dan and Darius Brubeck.
The Kennedy Center Honors is an annual honor given to those in the performing arts for their lifetime of contributions to American culture.

The look on Dave’s face and when he said “son of a bitch” when his boys came out. Dang. Got me in the feels.
The look of absolute love, pride, and joy on Dave's face when his sons are performing is priceless.
Agreed; the old man was pleased with everything, but when his children came out, he simply beamed.
You can read his lips saying”son of a bitch” when his sons are announced. Pure amazement and joy.
This brought tears to my eyes. His innovative jazz style, consistent life with family friends and associates were inspirational. There’s hardly a piece he wrote I don’t love. My youth echos with that off beat beat and sway. A good man. A great musician. A gift rarely seen. My his rest be sweet.
My favorite moment comes at 3:30, when Brubeck's four sons are introduced to the stage at the Kennedy Center, and Dave can be seen clearly muttering "son of a bitch!"
Wayne: It wasn't hard to read those lips, was it ??
I am fairly sure that he is using the plural form
This brought smiles and tears. Wish I had seen it in 2009; glad it's online. God bless The Brubecks.
Brubeck’s face! So sweet! And what a doll Mel Brooks is
First time I ever heard Take Five, I thought for sure I died and was in heaven.
If anyone wonders what a jazz cello sounds like, here's Exhibit A. The "Happy Birthday" bit at the end was for Dave Brubeck---The actual date of the performance was Dec. 6, 2009, Brubeck's 89th birthday. Brubeck would pass away three years later on Dec 5, 2012---one day before his 92nd birthday.
Damn he passed on my birthday
A father’s pride! ❤️
Dave comes across as being a real nice guy! - Awesome arrangement on "Blue Rondo à la Turk".
Long ago my brother raved about seeing Brubeck when he was touring college campuses. My brother talked about one piece where drummer Joe Morello played about a 20 minute solo and the other three simply walked off and took a break. Dave Brubeck was the person who brought jazz into mainstream American music. I hope people remember that. While my brother saw him earlier in his career, I was fortunate to see him near the end of his career. He seemed a bit feeble coming onto the stage at his older age - until he started playing. Always first rate. He said only one song was sort of hard for him to play and that was "London Flat, London Sharp" because one hand was playing in a key with many flats and the other hand in a key with many sharps. He said it made his brain hurt (which is doubtful).
I love Dave's reactions!!!!
What a fantastic standing ovation!!
This is arguably the best video out of The Kennedy Center Honors
Don't know about that... Heart's tribute to Led Zeppelin, brought Robert Plant to tears.
You know what's crazy? A young inexperienced adam neely is somewhere in the audience.
HAPPY DAVE BRUBECK DAY!!! 5/4
He also gets 7/4
This is without a doubt my favorite year (2009) of all the Kennedy Center Honors broadcasts I have seen! Between this segment and the utterly brilliant introduction of Bruce Springsteen delivered by Jon Stewart that same evening.... I have no further words that could do it justice! In the hopes that someone high up at the Kennedy Center sees my comment, I would like to plead again for the release of a complete DVD Box Set of the Kennedy Center Honors broadcasts! I know that a very substantial market exists for just such an item!
You can go on ebay and buy various dvd releases the kennedy center made as For Your Consideration Emmy Releases and this is one of them.
@@jamesmoyner7499 Thanks! I will definitely check that out! I appreciate the detailed info.... it will make it easier to hunt down!
@@1953jazzman i so far have the releases for the years:

How did I not see this the first time around? LOVED this - especially the look on his face when his 4 sons come on. Priceless.
Take Five was the first jazz song I could remember the title to. I've added a few more to that list since then, but Brubeck's jazz is a rainy day in late October/ early November and that's what I always look forward to.
Absolument magnifique !
A yotube of the greates😂t child entertainer DANCING using STILL photos. Brilliant ! You really get a sense of his real rhythm looking at frozen images. Great work Sparkola! You’ve turned a true masterpiece into a boring google photos slideshow. Can’t wait to see what you ruin next.
Hommage en Remenicances aan een geweldige tijd in de jazz geschiedenis.
1:56 when you just can't emotionally internalize their improvisation skills
Goosebumps...
Trumpet hitting some high notes
American classic!
Terrific!
The trombone phrase at 2:32 is just splendid , But what's also splendid is Miguel Zenon's solo at 1:35. On Green Dolphin Street , sax quote from John Coltrane .
Sometimes America gets it right!
Bellos recuerdos ,es un honor escuchar en vida a Dave Brubeck y una felicitación por su reconocimiento oficial en vida por parte del Presidente de Estados Unidos, y sus Hijos.

Epic!
Awesome!
Proud moment
The moment at 3:30 becomes sweeter and funnier if you know the backstory. In a piece one of Dave's sons wrote after his father's death, he explained that he and his three brothers had told their dad they would not be able to attend Dave's receiving the Kennedy Center Honors. Dave was obviously very upset and sad at the news, but as it turns out, it was a planned setup and surprise by the sons. They were not only attending but performing for the tribute. That explains Dave's "son of a bitch" moment when his sons were introduced.
The double bass behind this improvisation is phenomenal 2:03
🎶👏👏👏👏🔥
Nos Estados Unidos, costuma-se homenagear artistas. Tom Jobim, por exemplo, recebeu algumas homenagens antes de falecer. Mas, aqui no Brasil não existe esse reconhecimento.
3:53 - His son Chris playing as filthy as anyone reasonable person would want.

Watching Mr. Brubeck mouthing "SON OF A BITCH!" is one of the best parts. Read somewhere that he was kind of crossed none of his sons were going to be with him on the tribute, on the seats, because the plan was that they would be performers that night, lol
