Is a Daniel Defense AR-15 Worth the Money? The DDM4 V7 Review

  • In this episode of TFBTV, James Reeves reviews the Daniel Defense DDM4 V7, including a mini torture-test of this premium AR-15. With an MSRP of $1,800 to $2,000, this review raises the question: Is this Daniel Defense AR-15 actually worth this amount of money? Really, is any super-premium $1,500 to $2,000 AR-15 such as options from Bravo Company, Noveske, LMT, and other top-tier manufacturers justified for the price they command? Are you just paying for a brand name, or are you getting something else? Those questions answered, plus a good old fashioned Office Space style beatdown, plus James in the shower. Yes, James in the shower. It’s business as usual on TFBTV.

Hey James, great review. The steel QD sling swivel insert is designed to not tear out. Typical aluminum QD point can tear out after extended use. I particularly like Daniels defense QD sling swivel insert because it solves this problem in the most low profile/light way, without having steel permanently installed into the rail at varies points, going with the DD motto of lighter, better, stronger.

Daniel Defense is the only company that has refused warranty on a part that was lifetime warranty. They simply stated the part was no longer made and they could do nothing. However they could have replaced the part with a newer part that would have done the same thing. The part in question is a quad rail that bends left and right with the slightest bump leaving my sights to not being zeroed constantly. I advise not buying ANYTHING from Daniel Defense as they are a rip off, literally...!

I just bought this very rifle tonight at 1700 clams. I was a bit disappointed that it didn't even come with iron sights, and I had the store move the forward grip from the far forward position a little further back, and he stripped out the screws trying to remount it. Yeah, you were spot on when you said they can be difficult to mount anything. Anyway, I put an Eotech 512 on it and they changed out the stock forward grip for a Magpul, which was a little disappointing as well, but this thing feels great in the hands. I honestly never thought I'd actually buy something this nice, but she's a beat Clark! Your review of it firing after trying to beat it up gives me hope that I made the right decision.

If I planned to do precision shooting, I'd pay the extra money and get something better. Same if I had to go fight a war...I'd gladly pay the extra money. And if I had that kind of cash flow, it wouldn't be anywhere near the top of my wish list. So the question really comes down to personal preference.

Haha I love my 3 Bear Creek Arsenal ARs. My coworker, who seriously lives exactly the way I imagine a serial killer would live, can afford that DD. I was envious for the five seconds it took me to realize that living with his values but having expensive stuff would probably push me to suicide.
I’d love to have a DD but buying my cheapo uppers, assembling my four lowers myself (1 ultralight for my wife w an Odinworks UL .223 wylde bbl, 1 SI PDW lwr, 1 H2 pistol and one carbine lower) and tuning the gas and buffers to work with each use-specifically has fast tracked me to know 10x more about the platform in a very short time AND I now have the ability to mix/match SEVEN different configurations for different use cases for virtually the same price as that one DD.
I’d just like to encourage people new to ARs to build them if they have any mechanical inclination at all. My own process was like taking an accelerated course in understanding and troubleshooting the AR platform. Now, when I get the money saved up to buy a DD, tri-arc, BCM, Noveske, I will appreciate it so much more and I’m building handling skills so that I will actually truly benefit from a beautifully designed and manufactured carbine.

If you build your own ARs you can put together a kit which easily exceeds the DD for the same $1850 for sure. DD is easily adding $400 just for "professional assembly and testing", whole gun warranty, and to cover their marketing dept. And if your going over 2k for the build, forget about any factory built AR-15 as being the best value.
DD makes a good rifle, no mistake but just like it pays to be your own mechanic, you can build a better rifle then theirs for the same money if you have know how.

@@5jjt If you got a gun that is overgassed their are 3 solutions.
      1. Adjustable Gas block
      2. Adjustable BCG
      3. Heavier Buffer (H2, H3)
Buffer weight change is the cheapest. Being overgassed is easier to remedy then being undergassed which would require drilling bigger holes in the gas port, assuming their isnt an issue with the gas port coming loose (most liekly cause). An overgassed gun usually still runs but does so with increased felt recoil, and harsher wear and tear in the components. Easiest way to check if your gun is over or undergassed if to check the ejection pattern.

@@TeensierPython You’re missing the point. There is no law banning braces. DD is being proactive in the anticipation of the brace being regulated under the NFA and have chosen to side with the ATF instead of filing comments under the law stating why they should not be. That’s where the disappointment comes in. They value their government relationship and defense contracts more than they value the civilian who may be injured and needs that brace in order to have a firearm to protect their life. It has nothing to do with the law and everything to do with their choice to not stand behind a product they make and it’s intended use. It would’ve been extremely helpful if Daniel Defense would’ve filed comments with 150,000 other civilians who did so during the 90 day process.

Hi James! A friend of mine sent me a link to this video a few days ago. I enjoyed the video and I like your review. I'm a relative newbie when it comes to AR's, but not to firearms, shooting, or hunting (been around that all of my life). Earlier this year, I got my first AR, a DD V7 M4 Pro, and I absolutely love it! I had to go with the Pro version because I live in the communist state of Maryland, which has an HBAR requirement for AR type rifles. The DD M4 V7 Pro fits that requirement and is also called out as acceptable on Maryland's restriction list. The two differences between my V7 Pro and the V7 that you reviewed is that the V7 Pro has and 18" HBAR barrel, which adds to the weight some, but it also come with a Geissele Super Dynamic 3-Gun flat trigger direct from the factory. While I would have preferred the lighter 16" mil standard barrel, I have few complaints with the 18" HBAR on my V7 Pro. It is heavier, but there is very little recoil (not that there is a lot to begin with). I love the Geissele trigger system, which is WAY better than the mil std trigger on the rifle that you reviewed. While I agree that DD AR's are on the high end as far as cost, I am firm believer in the you get what you pay for when it comes to a most firearms, especially ones that I plan on entrusting my life and the lives of my family with. As you have proven, DD makes a very well built rifle that can withstand abuse and still fire reliably and accurately. That's the type of firearm I'm looking for when it comes to self defense.

I have a local armory made AR but I've swapped the furniture for DD for the more vertical pistol-grip and stock with their rubber because having the rubber on there just makes sense to me. I'd like to get a DD eventually, but in my state the defining piece that makes an AR legal or illegal is the barrel. We can only own HBAR barrels here sadly. Any future rifles I buy will be about longevity, not that I've had a moments issue with mine but still.

The average sofa patriot doesn’t shoot a 1,000 rounds per lifetime but being tacticool for IG photos is a much higher selection criteria and yes DD is better than PSA in absolute terms. And even likely a value for its intended purpose, over time. But can ya skills extract that difference?
    That’s a different question.

    • @thegreenman2030
      @thegreenman2030 2 роки тому +7

Agreed. I used to soot a lot but some health issues out of my control have slowed me down the last 4 years. When I started buying and assembling AR's I knew that I wanted more in the areas that counted but don't have the need for $1800.00 rifles. I decided on the premium PSA uppers with FN CHF barrels, and tool craft milspec bolts and carriers. I used parts kits from CMMG and polished nickle triggers. Is it the best out there? Well no but they are reliable, accurate and will most likely last my lifetime and well into my sons. I am defiantly not an operator.

I just think that a lot of people get lost on what they're actually looking for and looking to achieve. If I was a single man without a kid and the demands on my finances weren't so numerous, I'd probably get something like a DD. I especially wouldn't drop money on a high end rifle for one of my first. Getting to know the AR system on a more affordable platform makes sense. You learn to drive 5 speed in a Honda, not a lambo. Also, just because you have a lambo doesn't mean that you're extracting every bit of performance out of it with your skillset. Get to be a monster on an affordable rifle and you'll actually be able to utilize everything that makes the DDs so pricey.
