The best thing about this pedal is how upset it makes these Dad rockers. Don't worry, boys. I'm sure there will be 10 more Tubescreamer and Klon clones coming out at the next NAMM for you to enjoy!
So I’m an amateur electric audio circuit designer, and I have a theory as to why this doesn’t sound nearly as good as it could. That (what I’m assuming to be Xenon filled) tube is just a high voltage diode, and it’s probably working alongside a standard silicon diode as well, likely in a common “noise gate” configuration. It would appear that the converted high voltage audio signal is being sent directly through the diodes, with our Xenon tube putting on a show as it is filled with signal, and the entire circuit generating a harsh crossover distortion/fuzz. This functions because when the upper voltage threshold of the diodes are met, the signal hard clips, but as a result, it also acts as a shut off valve when the signal diminishes, because the diodes stop conducting and cut the output. This style of circuit is normally used with standard rectifier diodes in the later stages of higher gain tube amplifiers, to act as a proper noise gate. It’s normally placed later in the amp, so the signal is always large enough to pass (but too small to clip and distort), and when the input diminishes to close to nothing, the diodes shut off and don’t pass anything. My recommendation for improvement on the concept would be to use the gas tube in a soft clipping feedback configuration with a high voltage OPamp, almost TubeScreamer style. Another option would be to have a variable DC bias of the diodes, to control the threshold of the noise gate. Just my 2¢ though.
My suggestion would be pass a low frequency through tube to avoid the gating, if there's always a signal it won't be so harsh. However I lack the intricate knowledge surrounding voltages, low frequencies and xenon to confirm any of this.
Samuel Mumby That’s an idea that would work, if the frequency is below human hearing; but that would require a low frequency oscillator circuit, which would need more parts than a basic DC bias feed. Plus the gate would always be “off” then, without the variability. It’s not out of the reach of feasibility though, and is a really interesting concept!
Hmm...if it works like a rectifier, and rectifiers exist the later stages of high gain tube amps, then why not put it in the FX Loop of a cranked tube amplifier. Since the pre-amp signal will be much larger than any guitar signal, the noise-gate effect may roll off more naturally. Also without the pedal running thru the pre-amp the treble wouldn't sound like sandpaper grinding away my eardrums; however, I imagine the knobs would still take endless tweeking to get it working JUST right.
I think if you combined this with a standard boss distortion or fuzz, and we’re subtle with the mix, dialing in less plasma than d/f, and keeping the plasma behind the d/f in the chain, this could sound incredible.
This Pedal sounds like a spoon in a microwave. Completely awesome! This sound isn’t for everyone but almost perfect for some psychedelic stoner metal like Boris!
I’d like to hear this pedal in a stoner or a death metal song, or something djent-ish. With such a noise gate... would be nice if you could control the gate too Edit : it might be inherent of the design.
Glad to see it’s finally being adapted to Eurorack. That seems more like a natural place for an experimental effect like this: messing up drums, making strange feedback loops, adding dirty glitches to complex patches etc. it certainly doesn’t seem to please tone-obsessed blues-rock guitarists!
I have a Les Paul 59 RI Collectors Choice Edition and this pedals stays ON. It works real good with the tone woods especially the lighter ones but if you can get your hands on a Braz board and a Korina body!!!!!!!!! Oh man it is heaven.
The sound of the plasma pedal reminds a bit of an octave fuzz thats not coping with chords being played through it. And this very much is a fuzz, not sure why they called it a distortion.
To be frank, I'm surprised nobody thought of this sooner. I mean, everybody loves those static arc speakers that they play at live events! Also, you're right. That sounds fuzzy as FUCK!
It's a cool pedal for sure. It would be pretty useless without the blend knob, IMHO. The distortion sounded kinda the same to me, no matter the settings. The crunch is all out, all the time, like a rough fuzz with a Lo and Hi EQ section. That said, I think it would sound killer on bass.
Ps maybe pump a Tubescreamer through it to give it a more compressed and stronger signal and then do LIGHT clipping with the plasma? Plenty of useful applications and things to try (which I bet old mate here did try in his free time).
Definitely a fun pedal to have in the collection. The "blend" feature makes me think they had bass in mind. 90% of the drive pedals with "BASS" in the title have a blend knob. Great video!!
Hey Ryan I just got mine yesterday as they have only just come out here in the UK as they are only made in small batches. Expensive as hell but I just had to have one before they sold out! Treated myself for my birthday on Sunday. Awesome piece of kit! Nice one man.
I need about 1kg of weed to start appreciating this pedal, believe me I tried, I thought it was pretty cool the plasma thing and was hoping the pedal was decent, but looks like it is more looks than sound, it's just crushing bits for the fun of it. Awesome review man, thank you so much, really made my decision.
So it turns out that this thing is amazing for bass guitar in heavy rock choruses with a lot of overdriven guitars, used almost as you would use a SANS-AMP drive on a bass amp, but cooler. Thank god it has a blend knob, it might “almost” be unusable then.
I CANT BELIEVE SOME PEOPLE - you have one of the greatest inventions for guitar in years, and simple minds try to compare plasma to a distortion pedal....ok, the gain is not a volume knob carl "dan TPS" ...... I get the feeling the plasma is mostly for show and doesn't really contribute to the signal too much. Back when singing arcs/plasma speakers were a bit of a trend on UA-cam, there were a ton of videos that had a more subdued version of this sound. They recreated the audio perfectly but had a soft crackling underneath them. This pedal sounds like what would happen if you put the audio from those videos through a cheap distortion pedal so that the crackling was much louder.
Honestly, you gotta play this thing yourself to get the hype. I put this in front of my 1968 Alamo Fury, and it straight up rips. This guy didn't set up the EQ the way I like it, and I'm pretty bummed about that. It's a superb pedal for the fuzz obsessed.

Hmm... So this would be fun after a delay and/or reverb to "cut off" both of those things or gate them in fun ways. I want to hear this through a phaser, I think that'll be neat. Right! Did you see Chappers/Captain's video on this pedal a while back. They played some kinda ambient prog-metal stuff and it sounded *divine* (to my ears).
that latest TOOL-update video is what got me looking to hear this pedal. I think its a rad pedal for the right moment. Similar to how Jack Whites stuff sometimes goes raw and blows out. Moderation is the key.
