Thank you. Just bought my first fitness watch ever and it's because of guys like you that let me see what I'm getting that I was able to pull the trigger. Keep it up. Subscribed.
17:20 The Garmin 245, just like any other Garmin HRM, does not check one's blood pressure. Although, if the watch detects a pulse and reads one's oxygen saturation, one may as well assume that blood is pumped from one's heart with sufficient pressure. Good review.
The best review I've seen about this watch. Planning to switch to this from Apple watch S4, had a Fenix 5 a year ago, missing Garmin ever since. Subscribed. :-)
Really great video! I’m sold because of this video. Going to order mine for sure. I just want to to the one with music for those long runs since I have the biggest iPhone and after 10-12 miles, I don’t want to carry anything. Thank you!
Excellent review! Best so far! Loved it because I felt that I had the watch in my hands! First video I see from you, just subscribed with notification. Hope to get me this watch this year as a 21K PR gift.

I've been watching a lot of your videos before I get myself a Garmin, I do a lot of running just never had a watch! 8:18 when it says you are behind or ahead, is this based on the average pace for the entire run time or is it how far behind or ahead you are on your km/mile pacing? Thanks
This is an awesome review. I have a 230 right now and am most likely upgrading to the 245 music. Now I just have to decide if I want it in black or white! Thanks for the great video.
Hey Emily Anne, thanks for the comments!! You will love the upgrade from the 230. Good luck on the colour choice there - I'm definitely not getting involved in that 😀😎
Amazing review! Quick question... after your 245 vs. 45 video knocked the 45 out of the water, I’m now considering the 245 or the 645 (which has now dropped to a similar price point). I like the more premium build of the 645, but I’m worried about it being an ‘older’ watch with the technology. Also, do you know if the 645 is able to download that amazing race tracker screen... and the ‘running friend’ one? That really is a clincher for me for my 2020 running goal! Garmin Coach is a bonus... but they both have that. Thanks in advance - loving your channel!
Fantastic review...subscribed right away. Can you tell me how it performed on night run? How bright is display, is backlight good enough? And how it works wrist to wake, cause I've heard that some people complained because they had to push the button to activate the backlight. I run mostly in the evening, when it's dark, so these are very important to me...thanx!
@@shanebow Tnx a lot man...many things are great on this watch but this is not so good... I'd expect better functionality on night from 350$ watch... or 300 for non music...

Excellent review. I just ordered mine today, your video definitely helped a lot ! I was just wondering do you get any extra running data once it updates your run on the Garmin Connect app? Thanks in advance !
When you select run it will then turn GPS on. When finished it goes off. It's really great. When you first use GPS it takes a while longer to find the satellites but every time after it's pretty quick. 😎
Hello, great video! I had a question. I thought the watch only allowed up to four metric readings per screen but you have 5 metric areas displayed at minute 7:16. How did you do that?? Thank you!
Thanks Jonathan. On the Garmin app on your phone. Go to Connect iq store, then click the menu and select data fields. There are some real good ones. Choose a few to install and delete the ones you don't like. Let me know how you get on as I may make a video about it. Thanks
Just started following your reviews. Love them. New runner here and just getting the 245. Wanted to know if I would be able to control my podcasts which I listen to from my phone? Like you can control music on your phone?
Great review, thanks so much! Just a quick question, with the race pacer screen (7:45) can you only select preset distances (5k, 10k, etc) or can you select a random distance say 90km?
@@shanebow Thanks so much. I think I'll be saving up to get the 245 instead of the 45. The extra battery and race pacer would be really useful during the Comrades Ultra marathon.
Hey man great videos. Would you recommend this watch for trail running or just road running? And also how accurate would you say the heart rate monitor is? Cheers
Cheers Arron!😎 Yeah GPS works well under tree cover... Good for trails as long as you don't need it to track where you've been or load maps as it's just not got the software for that. I was trying to put together a video a few weeks ago comparing a heart strap to the 245. It came out really well, it is slightly behind on sudden changes like if you stop or suddenly go fast but it balances out really well.
Hey, great review! I really like it! From your experience, how long does it take the watch to "know" you? I mean when can you say the VO2/training status/recovery etc are accurate?
Hey Madalina. It looks like it's Calculated over the last few days constantly. I find the recovery times very very cautious, so much so I turned them off. Thanks for your awesome comments 😎
Awesome review. I got a question for you that I haven't had any answer for. Can I still get audio prompts through my bluetooth headset even if the headset is already connected to the phone for music?
Never own a Garmin watch before. So all this while been using Strava/Runkeeper to track my run on my iPhone connected to my Bluetooth earpiece. Every 1KM Mark it will tell me the time, average pace, distance etc.... Was wondering if I’m getting the 245 non music. And I’m listening music through my phone. I start a running activity on the watch. Will I get audio cue? And if yes, what Audio cue I get or is it customisable? Just to make it clearer Will the watch push the audio cue to my phone while I’m listening to music? Watch -> Phone -> Earpiece
Thanks for your question... The watch won't push any audio queues but the phone will. So as long as your watch is connected to your phone and you take it with you just follow the instructions below and you will get the queues you want even heart rate ones. From the settings in the Garmin Connect Mobile app, select Garmin Devices. Select your device. Select Activity Options > Audio Prompts. It's a great step up and having the data on your wrist is going to really help you out. You will be able to get the Garmin to sync with Strava too so you can carry on with the stats that you've built. I hope this helps you out... 😎
Hi Chin Yong. Great news! Really glad I was able to help. You're going to really appreciate the watch on your arm now. Make sure you connect the Garmin app to Strava so you can keep building up that Strava history.
@@shanebow Hi! One question. I have not own any Garmin Forerunner up till now. So i have been using Runkeeper/Strava to record my run. I have exported all my run and import into Garmin Connect. I am able to see my past activities on my phone Garmin app. But on my watch it shows 0 activities done.
I export all my runs to Strava and have never imported into Garmin so I'm not sure if it's even possible sorry. :( My thoughts are like this.... Setup your runs to automatically export to Strava as you can keep all your run history in the same place, Strava is one of the best apps for this. Awesome video! I really want to have a running layout that has (Distance / Timer / Current pace + Average pace) but i only seem to have (Distance / Timer / Current pace). Do you know how I can change this?
Hi. I am not sure if this is the correct place to ask this question. Looks like this is mainly towards Garmin. I am torn between gettin the Garmin 245 or Polar Vantage M. Any thoughts between the two? Or is the Garmin 245 the better option? Thx in advance...
Hey, thanks for the question. The Garmin focus will change by the end of the month. I may get one this month as I'm really keen to see what it's like. If I do will review it and do the obvious comparison with the 245. Apart from that I'm not going to be able to give a great opinion apart from what I've read sorry.
How much battery consumption will you get out of a 90 minutes workout, without the use of the heart monitor, music, and any other options? I only intend to have the regular GPS ON! is it fair to guess a 4% or 5% battery consumption per hour, using the regulat GPS only!?
@@shanebow 20%ish per workout or after a week!? the garmin forum website, the average runner's claims a 4 to 5% per hour battery drain!? is that your experience!? do you have the regular GPS on, listen to music, and the heart rate moniter while you run!? because having those features on while running are the main battery consumption culprits! I am all about effiency, and could do without the extra bells and wistles of a gps watch!!
Hi! I wuold like an advice, i run 3-4 times at week (30-40 km in total), now i own a Fitbit Versa but i want a more sport-oriented watch, i'm undecied about the 245M or the 645M, which one is better? P.S i've heard the 645 has some issues, is it true? Thanks!!
Hey Oldboy! 100% the 245m. I did start reviewing the 645m after my unboxing video (You Can see it on my video list) but stopped as there were some serious issues on my unit.
Hey, it's 51. It's a measurement of how the oxygen gets into your bloodflow and then oxygenates your muscles so they can then work effectively. Thanks for the questions
If I shut off this GPS watch when not in use, will I say battery consumption, or will shutting it down completely have a negative affect on the battery?
Love your channel, I think what could make you really stand out more professionally is investing in some better audio equipment such as a Sennheiser G3 Lavalier! I find the audio quality a little hard to hear
Great review! To others who might be going through the comments- does anyone here have a 245 Music and play music from the watch while running, to their bluetooth earphones? How is the experience? Any drops?
No drops so far with the Airpods. App crashed a couple of times, no used to that coming from the fr235, GPS takes a little bit more to catch, butwatch is faster overall.
You can't. Neither with 645 or 935. You have to pay more :) (FR 945, Fenix 5X). You are able navigate Back to Start position. That map in video is just your gps trajectory after run
Thanks for your kind words. Tomás is right with his response. But just added to the Garmin connect store is a 3rd party maps app that is compatible with the 245. Here is a link so you can look at it dynamicwatch.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360007147952-dwMap-Background-Maps
Really like your videos, great to see what it's actually like to use the watch unlike so many other reviews out there, next best thing to "try before you buy"! Anyway you've made my mind up and I'll pick up a 245, but thinking about protecting my investment have you got any experience with screen protectors and if so are there any you'd recommend for it?
Hey Barry. If you have the strava account connected to your Garmin account it will auto transfer. You will see it in your Strava account within a few seconds of it hitting Garmin in most cases. Let me know if you don't get it working and I will make a video on it.
Hey Kevin, thanks for your question. Basically it will bring up an overview of your excercise and you just select save on the watch. If the Bluetooth in on on your phone and watch it just syncs straight away automatically. The data is then available to see on the Garmin app and on the Garmin website. It's great to see all the data on your phone after a run. It can also automatically sync from Garmin to a running app like Strava or Endomondo too. I have an upcoming video planned for syncing Garmin app to Strava and other running apps. Does that answer your question?
@@shanebow thanks for replying. Was just wondering if the data does not automatically save, i.e. if you don't press save on the watch after a run, is it lost? I'm using a Fitbit currently and am used to how it works.
Now you mention the Fitbit I understand what you mean. Fitbits have the function to auto record activity. So you will need to change your running process slightly as it will be worth it... So you will need to tell your watch you are going for a run. Just click the top right start/stop button and then run will be shown on the screen, press it again and it will say waiting for GPS. When the GPS has locked on after a few seconds press it again to say you are starting. So it's 3 button presses with the same button to start with. After the run has finished press start/stop on the top right of the watch to say you've stopped. Then select save. The benefit is huge, you will have really accurate run data that records straight away from when you want it to to the second you stop, not when the Fitbit thinks you have. A good example is when you may not want to include your warm up on your run data. You will still get good step and sleep data with your Garmin but you will notice the phone app doesn't initially look as visually well laid out. It's definitely going to be a good upgrade if you want to look at your running data more closely. 😎
Is it possible to switch off that backlight light? I don't really like it. As user of Apple Watch I am used to see black as black on display. I can imagine many benefits of always on display also great readable on sunlight. But I really cant appreciate that old looking style backlight
Hey thanks for the question. I think you are referring to the screen in general... It's always on, but is not lit so you can't see it in the dark. There is a backlight you can turn on that will automatically turn off after 10 seconds.
Yes you can. I some times do some hitt workouts in front of the TV. Works well, tracks BPM too. You can select cardio for that. You also have other options for gym workouts too like treadmill. Thanks for your question 😎
So I was making a comparison video on them both last year but scrapped it as the 645 was too buggy. I was really wanting it to be great as the features are good and it looks smart. From my experience last year the 245. But saying that Garmin may have put an update in to fix these bits. 245 is solid for running.
Thank you, i think, i will buy 245 as my first running watches. I like, that it's has more watch faces than 45 and also i can add widgets from Connect IQ store. I don't wear watches at all, i need only for running and cycle with good GPS, i think this model is my choice.
It has been a disappointing purchase. It has a lot of extras, but it doesn't supplies the basics for me. The optic HR is even less accurate than my previous Polar M240 when running on a medium demanding workout and it has only the option to record automatic km laps, but then you can't record in parallel your own laps. Then when I'm using the HR band the battery runs out quite quickly. I can't do much more than 2 or 3 of 1 hour workouts
Hey Shane, I know this is a super old video but I was wondering what app you are using to display behind time at ua-cam.com/video/xNHZUS2rRLQ/v-deo.html. Thanks!
That's disappointing especially as the gear S3 is almost nearly a year old. Will you stick with the Garmin or go back to the S3? I had a gear fit for a while and really liked the smart features like notifications.
Hi Sergey, thanka for your question. Under the watch is a light which shines through your skin and tracks your blood flow. The pulse is not 100% accurate but they are very close.
Hey Antoine, yes you can into Garmin connect. Depending on what you want to do with it depends on watch model. What did you want to do with the GPX file?
This extra software you can download may help dynamicwatch.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360007147752-Using-routeCourse-on-your-Fenix-5-6-Marq-or-Forerunner-245-645-935-945
helow. i am new to garmin and i just owned my own FR245. my questions is how to know if my GPS is ready for running? i already wait around 3 mins in running mode but nothing happened. Is there any notification or such? (because when i use polar m400, there is a notification when the gps signal is ready)
I feel your pain....If it's the first time it may take a while. When I took my 235 to NYC last year it took about 15 mins to find the satellites there. But every other time after it was within about 10 seconds then. Try leaving it in the garden for a little bit then go back. Hope it's not a dud one for you mate

@@shanebow Thank you! I'll go with the 245 then!
Thanks for your review video. I wonder your VO2 max if you dont mind to share. I dont really understand or take advantage of that number.
Hey, it's 51. It's a measurement of how the oxygen gets into your bloodflow and then oxygenates your muscles so they can then work effectively. Thanks for the questions
@@shanebow thanks for your info. New thing on the cheap series is the Pulse OX, do you think it is useful? How do you apply in your reality?
If I shut off this GPS watch when not in use, will I say battery consumption, or will shutting it down completely have a negative affect on the battery?
The GPS is only turned on during a run anyways
Love your channel, I think what could make you really stand out more professionally is investing in some better audio equipment such as a Sennheiser G3 Lavalier! I find the audio quality a little hard to hear
Thanks Christian 😊
Great review! To others who might be going through the comments- does anyone here have a 245 Music and play music from the watch while running, to their bluetooth earphones? How is the experience? Any drops?
No drops so far with the Airpods. App crashed a couple of times, no used to that coming from the fr235, GPS takes a little bit more to catch, butwatch is faster overall.
Great review :3 Subbed.
Cheers for that! You are obviously awesome! 😎🥇
Nice review, can you explain how to put maps on the forerunner 245?. im waiting for mine to arrive soon.
@@shanebow , wow thank you, im very new to garmin apps, i have a lot to study, nice that we have a n alternative, is good enough? or just too slow?
You're welcome! 😎 I must be honest, I've never used it. But it's given me an idea for an upcoming video
Cheers Luke. I can't say on the protectors, I never use them sorry.
What watch are you using for your daily runs right now?
Forerunner 245. 😀👍
Hi there, Thanks for the great review.
Can I put 5k goal and when i finish my 5k it will automatic stop ?? Thanks
You can get it to beep at 5k. Thanks for your kind comments. Good luck
@@shanebow Thanks for your reply . But I want it to stop my run session after 5k . Can I ?
Thanks
You can indeed input time and or distance goals
@@Rene_Christensen How?
@@8AboAnas8 unfortunately it won't stop on completion of 5k, you'll have to stop it yourself
When using Strava do you have to physically start strava on your phone or does the data transfer once the phone is paired to your strava account?
Hey Barry. If you have the strava account connected to your Garmin account it will auto transfer. You will see it in your Strava account within a few seconds of it hitting Garmin in most cases. Let me know if you don't get it working and I will make a video on it.
I like how positive you are :)
Cheers mate, thanks for that. Take care! 😎
So, after each exercise you have to manually save the recorded data?
What is the name of widget for battery indicator?
Is it possible to switch off that backlight light? I don't really like it. As user of Apple Watch I am used to see black as black on display.
I can imagine many benefits of always on display also great readable on sunlight.
But I really cant appreciate that old looking style backlight
Hey thanks for the question. I think you are referring to the screen in general... It's always on, but is not lit so you can't see it in the dark. There is a backlight you can turn on that will automatically turn off after 10 seconds.
A great review!
Thanks for the comments. 😎
can you use this for regular workouts?
Yes you can. I some times do some hitt workouts in front of the TV. Works well, tracks BPM too. You can select cardio for that. You also have other options for gym workouts too like treadmill. Thanks for your question 😎
Doing Good, Go Ahead.
Cheers! All the best on your running 😎👍😎
When using the all in one screen, can the virtual runner be on there too?
On a separate screen yes 👍
You are an awesome man.
Cheers mate!
Does it measure ascent and descent during running ?
Hi, It measures elevation
@@shanebow Thank!
Hi! Congrats for the vídeos! At same price 245 or 645??? Thanks !
So I was making a comparison video on them both last year but scrapped it as the 645 was too buggy. I was really wanting it to be great as the features are good and it looks smart. From my experience last year the 245. But saying that Garmin may have put an update in to fix these bits. 245 is solid for running.
@@shanebow so i will go for 245!
Thanks!
You can't go wrong with it
So you will choose 245 over 645 ?
Yeah. The 645 looked really promising but from what I saw it wasn't stable enough
Thank you, i think, i will buy 245 as my first running watches. I like, that it's has more watch faces than 45 and also i can add widgets from Connect IQ store. I don't wear watches at all, i need only for running and cycle with good GPS, i think this model is my choice.
Good reasons. You're going to really love it as a first watch. Thanks for the comments
Thanks!
Hey, is it the virtual runner you mean?
@@shanebow Specifically the screen that shows "Behind" in red. That looks very useful
Great review
Do you know anyone who had problems with the display? Something like a white blot? I´ve seem some cases e I got a little bit concerned
Could be the display losing pixels. I'd definitely send back
The audio music quality on 245M is not as good as my Samsung Gear S3. Paired with Airpods.
That's disappointing especially as the gear S3 is almost nearly a year old. Will you stick with the Garmin or go back to the S3? I had a gear fit for a while and really liked the smart features like notifications.
@@shanebow245M is really good but I decided to keep my Gear S3 and return Garmin 245M.
what part of the music quality is bad? the mp3 or the music services? spotify deezer?
@@aznhandles bass, treble and bluetooth stability. The mp3 from internal storage.
hi, how does the optical sensor work? accurately measures the pulse?
Hi Sergey, thanka for your question. Under the watch is a light which shines through your skin and tracks your blood flow. The pulse is not 100% accurate but they are very close.
Why does it say you ran .5 miles when you were standing still? I don't understand that. It's not 100% accurate in distance is it?
Can I upload GPX file?
Hey Antoine, yes you can into Garmin connect. Depending on what you want to do with it depends on watch model. What did you want to do with the GPX file?
Hi Shane, thanks for your reply. I was wondering if the Garmin 245 will help me in navigation like give me turn by turn instructions on the screen?

Shanebow - Running & Tech - Thank you
helow. i am new to garmin and i just owned my own FR245. my questions is how to know if my GPS is ready for running? i already wait around 3 mins in running mode but nothing happened. Is there any notification or such? (because when i use polar m400, there is a notification when the gps signal is ready)
When you've selected run you can press up for options. The GPS will be red initially then will change to green 😎
@@shanebow when i push the up button in run mode, it goes to 'run settings' menu. am i wrong?
From the main screen with the clock. Try pressing start twice then up. Does it say gps at the top?
@@shanebow aah yes. It says GPS and had a red color. I already waited for several minutes and it still didnt change to green.
I feel your pain....If it's the first time it may take a while. When I took my 235 to NYC last year it took about 15 mins to find the satellites there. But every other time after it was within about 10 seconds then. Try leaving it in the garden for a little bit then go back. Hope it's not a dud one for you mate
