Firstbeat is a oxygen saturation algorithm designed by firstbeat for professional athletes to determine state of physical health according to heart rate. This will tell you how hard you have worked out for your paticalular health, and how much rest, stress you body is going through.
Really good comment. But do you know that some people don't like carrying there heavy clunky phone while they run and it would be more convenient to do it from a watch?
Still completely torn what to go for next. Was intending to swap my Vivoactive 3 for the Fenix 5 Plus then I saw the FR245. It does everything I need but I just wish it looked a little meatier like the Fenix. Another plus for the FR245 is no Altimeter. I'm on my 2nd VA3 having the first replaced due to faulty elevation and now my replacement is doing the same a few months later. I'm sick fed up correcting the elevation after every run. The FR245 will never have that issue
The Apple Watch is clearly the more capable watch, and in some cases has a lot of functional capabilities that you/I would never need or use, and honestly the Apple Watch is an excellent fitness tracker. The Apple Watch is definitely the better “smartwatch.” That being said, the Apple Watch has to be charged every other day, and sometimes daily if you use it for long runs. The Garmin is a lot more runner/fitness focused, and has metrics that you won’t get from the Apple Watch. Also, the Garmin is much better for a more serious runner doing regular speed work, because the physical buttons make keeping track of intervals much easier to do.
I am in the run for a 245 or the Vivoactive3 I would like to see a comparison about that. Is the 245 worth the extra 100,- I will use it for running. And some indoor rowing.
Definitely will be posting that comparison very soon. As for my quick answer I would say it depends on how often you are doing interval type workouts. If intervals are a regular part of your running (a couple times a week), then I’d say yes, the 245 is worth it. If you are just going out to run and enjoy the outdoors and just to stay in shape, then don’t bother paying the extra. The key is the physical buttons on the 245 makes it much easier to keep track of your intervals.
I had the vivoactive 3 since last year, then the VA3 Music as replacement for a week before Garmin announced the FR245. I returned it and now, i own the FR245. I am very happy with it. Before, it thought touch is better than buttons but i was wrong. I don´t missed touch a second! Also very nice: You can rename activities (not possible on VA3). As hiking is missing on the whatch, i just copied walking and renamed it to hiking and after sync, the activity is shown as hiking without renaming it (if you have connected garmin to other platforms like strava or endomondo you don´t have to rename it there again). You also can rename sensors (chest strap, headphones), it is good if you have a bunch of external sensors (VA3 -> just numbers). I also like BodyBattery very much and the new PulseOX for sleeping. I also hope to get more GPS time while hiking (24hrs? maybe only with ultratrac, no infos found). I also don´t miss the altimeter because the VA3 altimeter was often wrong. I am not the big runner (more hiking, walking, bike in sparetime and a Nerd who likes the metrics) but i am very happy with the Forerunner 245 and never want back my VA3 (maybe the VA4 could be interesting because it could have the new GPS sensor + Body Battery + PulseOX). What i have to test is the external Display (show activity data on my Edge 130 Bike Computer), VA3 "only" can send heart data (which was very nice!!) and navigation features (just for a test, i use it sometimes on my edge 130 which is nice).
I wouldn’t say the 245 looks much better. Honestly they both have relatively low resolution screens. The good thing is that they are easily visible on the brightest days.
Pretty much any workout you can think of can be tracked on the watch. The other activities that I didn’t show in the video include the option to track strength training.
It pairs just fine with either Android or iOS, but with Android you have the ability to have quick responses on the watch. With iOS you just can’t utilize the quick response option, but all of the other functions work well with either platform.
I am a frequent skier. Does the 245 have a skiing mode or does the VA3 have one? And how accurate do you think the 245 would be (obviously without its barometric altimeter).
To be honest,I'll just wait until the none-music 245's price is lowered and buy it.Or the vivoactive 4 when it comes out

What a good review. Thanks Donavon!
Great video !! What chest strap would you recommend for running and specifically for treadmill running?
Does the normal stopwatch show milliseconds, so that when I do sprint workouts I can see for example 22.37??
Donavon thanks for the video.. could you tell me about it's other activities specially about capabilities for swimming and life of the watch..
How does forerunner 645 look compared to vivoactive 3 on your hand? Ehich one is more stylish and good looking?
Really gut comparison. But du you know that can I control my music from without music version watch, while i listen to music from my phone?
Really good comment. But do you know that some people don't like carrying there heavy clunky phone while they run and it would be more convenient to do it from a watch?
Yes, you can control the music on your phone from the watch. For this you don't even need the Music version

Fr945 ? :)
So where does this fall for you versus the Apple Watch?

Donavon Hornbeck Great answer! Thanks for the reply!
Eric Sisk garmin sacrifices a good screen for battery life. garmin is more running centered with running metrics instead of more smartwatch centered.
How much available storage for mp3s on the 245 music?
there is up to 500 songs so more then enough and you can attach spotify, amazon music if you have premium for downloads :)

I agree, after having the physical buttons on my Fenix 5 Plus and now the Forerunner 245, going back to touchscreen would be tough.
The screen looks better than the VA3? Correct me if im wrong. Looks less of a shitty LCD in this
I wouldn’t say the 245 looks much better. Honestly they both have relatively low resolution screens. The good thing is that they are easily visible on the brightest days.
Does the huawei gt 2 stand against this ?
Would the 245 be good for strength training or just running?

Thanks again I really appreciate the info! Great video too!
Donavon Hornbeck can you please show the strength stuff
What's the duration of the battery in gps mode?
If you use it with GPS and Bluetooth (for music) it is 7 hours. If you are on GPS only mode you get 24 hrs.
@@donavonhornbeck u test it?
Thanks
I am a frequent skier. Does the 245 have a skiing mode or does the VA3 have one? And how accurate do you think the 245 would be (obviously without its barometric altimeter).
There are 3rd party ski tracking apps, but not one from Garmin. I can’t speak to their accuracy because I’m not a skier myself.
No, it's not possible since it lacks the barometric altimeter
Does it work with airpods?
Definitely
Yes. But you can not use double-tap function for skip a track.
thu cuoi thanks
i have cheap bluetooth buds, works with anything bluetooth
